Creating PDF Bug?

We have an application that reads in xml does an xstl
transformation on it then send it to cfdocument to create a pdf. On
certain documents this causes and internal server 500 error, with
this entry appearing in the log:
06/26 09:39:38 Error [jrpp-562] - ERROR encountered loading
http://myurl/pdf.cfm:
java.io.IOException: Parsing problem
06/26 09:40:29 Error [jrpp-557] - ERROR encountered loading
http://myurl/SUNYPP/pdf.cfm:
java.io.IOException: Parsing problem
Anyone seen this before? I can reproduce this problem at
will.

yes it does validate. I have 2 jrun servers that pull from
the same drive and one works fine but the other throws an IO error.

  • "Failed to create PDF" bug

I've wasted more than enough time chasing down this inexcusable bug (by which I mean the failure to report a reason for the PDF export failure, not necessarily the export failure itself, for which there may be a reason I could do something about, if I was told what it was). I've upgraded to the latest product version and explored all the avenues described on this forum and have found no consistent answer. I'll have to export subsets of my material and stitch them together externally to make a single PDF file. Acrobat aside, what is the best affordable utility for doing this, ie one which will preserve the Indesign output options as regards printer's marks etc when assembling a PDF from multiple parts?

It took a along time to talk my bosses into purchasing the CS6 update and the "failed to create PDF" feature is costing us a lot of money in lost productivity. We place all rasters in PS and then all PS in an Illustrator file (for process consistency and so our callouts are all the same size).  For us, the issue is related to images in the document.  I usually open the page (or the page after) where the image occurred and open the Illustrator file, open the PS file, change the image mode to 8-bits rather than 16, then go back to Illustrator and update the CS5 legacy file to a CS6 Illustrator file. A real pain when you have 600 page documents containing an almost equal number of graphics.
My bosses want to switch to an XML based information system.  This is not where I'd like to see us go because creativity can be stunted in a purely XML/DTD environment.  But the costs associated with using Adobe are rising rapidly and these type of issues make the bean-counter's case for them.

  • Save As PDF bugs

    Hi All,
In the past, I've always printed to PS via the Distiller instance, but now we have new branding with spot colors used in the FM templates, so now Save As PDF is a must.
I am finding what I think to be a bug, because it is consistently reproducible. When I Save As PDF choosing Page Range: All, I can get all of the pages printed with spot colors and working hyperlinks, BUT the leftmost cell of the first row of every single table is empty, even though the FM screen itself displays the row's contents.
Here's the PDF outcome — please note the first body cell of the table is empty:
All tables in the document have the same issue. I tried opening other documents, they all have the same behavior. I tried importing formats from other tables, creating new table formats, etc., and the same issue persists, even when I copy-special the char formatting of a cell that does print and paste it to the non-printing cell.
Here's what the same section looks like in the FM window:
However, when I Save As PDF choosing Page Range: 1 to [last number], the contents of the first cell in the first column of the first body row of the table displays perfectly fine, but of course none of the hyperlinks work. Here's that outcome:
If that cell didn't print in any table of any output, it would likely be some kind of formatting issue, but that's not what's happening. The cell prints anytime that I do NOT Save As PDF for ALL pages (which leaves the less-than-satisfactory options of either no working hyperlinks, or pgf/char/tbl format colors generating RGB while the imported graphics on the ref pages retain a different color output that's nearer the spot color).
It's annoying to have to choose pages 1 through (whatever is last) to get all of the rows of all of the tables to properly display, but I would do that as a work around if the hyperlinks worked. However, having to choose between either getting all the tables' body rows complete, or having all the hyperlinks working, or getting both of those but no spot color (which is what happens when I print to PS, yielding inconsistent color issues) is making me choose between lose, lose, or lose.
Is there a patch or work around for this issue, or am I going to need to either convince Marketing that branding guidelines for color in their tech doc suite doesn't matter, or pay USD$2000 to get a PDF processor that links everything on the backend just to get all the content and colors right, and add the links post-PDF creation...? Perilous choices. (You can choose to lose your eye, lose your ear, or lose your arm, but you cannot keep all three. Choose. 'Tis but a flesh wound. Monty Python must have written the script.)  I'm sorry, I don't mean to sound exasperated (or exaggerated, as you wish); I have never had this kind of issue with FrameMaker before, and I did a lot of talking around here to convince them to buy the new TCS5 as the best solution for their PDF and online help deliverable needs.
Maybe I'm idealistic, but it doesn't seem too much to expect a program as mature as FM to create PDF output that supports hyperlinks, retains spot color, and actually displays all the text relatively WYSIWIG to the FM interface... Surely I'm missing something, or this is a bug with a work-around, right...?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
    Rene

    Thanks for chiming in.
We've got Pantone 307 CVC as the spot color on H2 text and table header backgrounds, as well as several character formats (bullets, hyperlinks, etc.).
In FM, Help > About shows version as 12.0.1.331. Is there a newer patch?
The PDFs are multi-use, because some customers use them as print material, while others use the PDF directly in electronic format. (Audience is international: UK, EU, all over the Americas, as well as some in east Asia and Russia. Yes we have more issues to address than this, but that's another topic for another post at another forum.)
Marketing doesn't like how green the Pantone 307 CVC renders in the PDF when we use the PS>PDF option, so that's why we started using CMYK output = Save As PDF. ("Whether it's in the PDF or printed, it's supposed to be consistent with the blue in the logo, not a teal color.")
I wonder if the better solution might be to find an RGB visual equivalent...
Row background colors alternate 3% and 10% every other row. I have the same results whether I use the standard Dark Gray from the FM color catalog, or Pantone 444 CVC. The only font in play is Calibri. Heading row background is Pantone 307 CVC with 10pt Calibri 100% White text for headings. Cellbody text is 9pt Calibri 100% Black text (colors from FM stock color definitions).
I was going to upload a sample FM file, but I don't see a way to do so...?

  • Save as PDF or Save Book As (pdf format) Causes Frame 8 to try to quit after creating PDF

I have Framemaker 8p273 and Acrobat distiller 8.1.3.
When trying to creating PDFs from books using either Save as PDF OR Save Books As (PDF) file, the PDF creates FINE but the program then attempts to quit by throwing up weird dialog boxes.
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1.Open any book
2.Use File-->Save as PDF or File-->Save Books As and then choose type PDF
3.PDF created fine - no errors reported in Distiller window
    4. Framemaker then throws up a small dialog box that says "cannot quit." You cannot close this box, only click OKAY.
The only other issue that arises might be a "cannot print some graphics - will print as gray boxes"
    5. Clicking okay brings up sequence of 5 total of the same boxes (the book file has 7 files in it including the TOC).
    6. After last of 5 "cannot quit" boxes, a new Framemaker one appears, that says "Unsaved Changes in file (book name) Save before closing?" Options are Yes, No and Cancel. Yes saves file and quite Frame. No quits Frame. Cancel leaves file open.
I have reproduced this error multiple times with different books, using both the Save as PDF and Save Book As (PDF) commands.
File--Print Book using Acrobat printer works fine (making sure to enable the acrobat setting so bookmarks are properly generated).
Just frustrated that the first two options cause such an annoying error. Reported as a bug.

    Jaclyn,
I've seen this happen when an API client attempts to close a document that doesn't exist, which defaults to closing the FrameMaker session, but the session cannot close because it's in the middle of some operation. It's normally the result of sloppy code. Do you have any third-party API plugin software running? For that matter, does anyone know if the "Save as PDF" uses an API client? If so, might be a bug in that software, although it seems that there must be something unique going on here to invoke this behavior in your case.

  • Acrobat 9 Pro - Create PDF from Word doesn't start

I have Word 2007 and Acrobat 9 Pro installed on Windows 7. I can print a Word file to PDF, but using Create PDF on the Acrobat toolbar does almost nothing. A dialog opens and asks what to name the file, but when I click Save nothing happens. The PDF Maker doesn't even start.
When I go into Acrobat and try to Create PDF from File and select a Word file, I see a message about "starting" but then I get "An unexpected error occurred. PDFMaker was unable to produce the Adobe PDF."
So I essentially have no PDF and no useful error messages to help me find the source of the problem. I've tried repairing the Acrobat installation, and even uninstalling and re-installing, all to no avail. My IT department has tortured me for a few hours trying all the basic stuff, but nothing has helped. I found this problem description in the Adobe Knowledgebase and I followed the steps there, but still nothing. (Yes, I have my name and initials set in Word's personalization settings. That was a dumb bug, wasn't it?)
Anyone had any ideas? I can create basic PDF by printing, but that doesn't give me a hyperlinked table of contents and other good stuff that I need.
    Thanks for any help!
    Steve

    Hi Bill,
Can you tell me a little more about PDF Maker not working in Word? It worked fine for me on my Windows XP machine with Word 2003 and Acrobat 8 (or maybe 9). It sounds like you've had a different experience. I currently have version 9.3.1, but the updater is running right now to update that. Is there another way to install the updates besides with the built-in updater? I don't seem to have control over the order of the updates when I use it.
I will try turning off features to see what happens. It doesn't look like PDF Maker gets started, though, so I don't know if it's getting far enough to even load the list of what features are on/off.

  • White boarders around artboard when creating pdf in CS4

    Hi,
have been trying to find solution for this issue for 4 hours now and im loosing my mind:)) ... so decided to ask some help from you guys.
Problem: im trying to create pdf file with black background in Illustrator cs4 and white thin boarders keep appearing to the right and bottom of the page. I have streched the background image so that its bigger than the artboard but white lines are still there when pdf is opened?!? I guess there is extremeley easy solution for this (kind a "you forgot to tick the box from x menu") but i just cant figure out .... so all the help is most wellcome!!!
    Thank you in advance!
    Jimi

@ Jacob --- you're half correct, in that it's a small bug, or smoothing artifact in the Preview application from Apple.
White boarders go away when you uncheck "Smooth text and line art" in Preview Preferences, under the PDF tab. Since that makes everything very pixelated, I don't recommend keeping that setting on.
Instead, consider installing Adobe Reader or using Acrobat Pro, where incidentily, the very same phenomonen can occur. In Acrobat Pro, you can also toggle "Smoothing" in the Preferences, Page Display dialog.
TIP: Preview works best with RGB PDFs, whereas if you are doing print production work, I would suggest using either Acrobat Reader, or Pro which is my preference because of the soft-proofing and print production tools.

  • Acrobat 9 Quits When Create PDF from Scanner Selected

Hi. I wonder if anyone can advise please.
I have recently installed Acrobat 9 on my MacBook Pro and have plenty of RAM. However, I can "Create PDF from Scanner" just the once. After that, Acrobat quits when I select Scan or quits if I cancel the scan.
    I have tried the following:
    1. Troubleshoot System Errors & Freezes
    2. New User account
    3. Recreated Preferences
    4. Booted from separate disk
    5. Repaired disk permissions
    6. Have no third party plug-ins installed
    7. Have run Repair Acrobat
    8. Changed Universal Access
    9. Defragmented disk & repaired files
    10. Safe Boot and reinstall Acrobat
Nothing has worked except when I clean install I can scan through Acrobat once.
I can scan from the scanner software - Lexmark 4850 - with a jpeg straight to Acrobat but want to try to solve the issue of scanning straight from the app.
    Thanks for your help people.
    Regards
    Paul

After I discovered my problem of quitting after completing the scan of the first side of a 2-sided document and decided to go to Adobe for help, I should have known I was in real trouble after following their instructions for locating the Acrobat serial number. After bringing up the splash screen and clicking on it, instead of seeing the number the splash screen disappeared! So I had no option but to use the phone. Then their help person couldn't give me the serial number- he had to transfer me- and I chose to stay with him for help instead. He decided it was a conflict between the Acrobat & HP software and ended the help session.
I then did some on-line research and discovered others with the same problem, and came up with the comparison test with the Windows version. Adobe's phone system didn't recognize my Case #, but the second Help person said it worked fine. At that point, I got the feeling that I was in real trouble. After another hour going over the same ground and repeated denials that their software was at fault, the Helper refused my request that they do a Windows comparison test or send me a Windows version to test myself and promised to call me back with results of their "research". That call never came.
On the third call, again with the Case # unrecognized by the phone system, the Helper was even more unhelpful, probably after reading the record of the first two calls. He insisted on going back to the machine and over the same ground once again, and I ended the call.
I agree that the on line approach is better, and I may have to make a double call to get the serial number (neither of the two I have, each different on the case or on the CD worked) and try that if my request for a supervisor fails. Fortunately they are so incompetent that they can't track starting over.
I'm not a programmer, but have lots of varying experience with computers dating back to the first Atari-400. Since your Acrobat uses only the Twain driver component from your scanner software, the first place to look for a problem is in the Acrobat software, especially since the software doesn't run again after the first use without reinstalling, and the scanner continues to perform properly using it's installed software. The Windows comparison test such as Tim Whitfield was able to make, would clearly establish the Mac version of the Acrobat software to be at fault, but would still not resolve our problems. Unfortunately I hold out little hope for either you or I with Adobe, since neither their phone nor the online help has come up with a prior fix. This indicates a bug fix requirement, which for something like this looks to be a relatively long time in coming.

  • Creating pdf-output in Germany

    Hello,
I have created a report with Developer 6.08 on a Windows NT 4.0-Client.
    The report creates pdf-output.
The compiled report is run with rwrun60 on several PC with also NT 4.0.
On some PC the output file is correct and can be read by the Acrobat Reader. On others the numbers in the created
output file have a (german?) comma as decimal seperator.
These files cannot be read by the Acrobat Reader.
The regional settings on all PC are set to "Deutsch(Deutschland)".
The NLS_LANG is set to AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE88ISO59P1 and the "decimal"-variable in the report is a dot.
There must be some difference between the PC, but where is it?
    Thanks, Birgit

    Birgit,
There was a bug with some german printer drivers where if you printed a report to that driver, afterwards you would see this behaviour with PDF output. This was fixed in an earlier 6i patch set. I would suggest that you download the latest 6i patchset from metalink and install that.

  • Create PDF From Web Page Does Not Create Image Maps Properly

I have a website that contains image maps. When I "Create PDF From Web Page", these image maps are not rendered properly. From what I can tell, this is a BUG within Acrobat, and I'm hoping that people can confirm this for me.
I created a test page at http://www.quantumdynamix.net/clients/image-map-test/. I placed the images maps my manually coding the coordinate information, so the maps are PRECISELY placed exactly over the squares. Each image map navigates to an anchor corrisponding to the number on the red square.
When I created the PDF using the "Create PDF From Web Page" feature, the image maps are rendered improperly. This file can be viewed at http://www.quantumdynamix.net/clients/image-map-test/ImageMapTest.pdf. To view the outlines of the image maps, please select "Tools" -> "Advanced Editing" -> "Link Tool". You can see the outlines are substantially incorrect.
Please confirm that other can replicate this problem. Any solution to this issue would be very helpful!

What server language are you using? I have used a server
    component
called www.asppdf.com which is fairly expensive, but can
    create PDFs on
the fly from dynamic data. Its comlex, but worth the effort.
There are other solutions for PHP and CF, but no extensions,
    so will
    need some serious coding.

  • TPS file is not deleted after FrameMaker creates PDFs via Acrobat 8

Using FrameMaker 7.2 build 158, and Adobe Acrobat 8, when creating PDF files, the temporary PostScript file (*.tps), which is created before the final PDF, is not deleted after the creation of the PDF is complete.
This is a big deal for us because we are using a tool which hooks into the PDF-creation of FrameMaker/Distiller, and is reliant on this TPS file being deleted.
Is this a known bug? Does Adobe know about this? Do any other users have workarounds for this?

    Thomas,
FWIW, speaking from experience with the Save As route, I've seen
random "phunnies" in the final PDFs (such as the missing fonts
issues), a bigger .tps file than the .ps file generated from directly
printing to file, slower throughput in both the intermediate
postscript file creation and actual distilling (probably tied in to
the larger .tps file) and other differences from what the joboptions
    should have been.
There should not have been any differences in the file sizes being
created if the same printer instance/configuration was actually being
used. I also see this on some automated runs with Miramo. It's not
consistent either - sometimes it works fine and then the next run, the
process is considerably slower and there are dropouts in the PDFs.
So far, manually printing to a ps file and distilling always seems to
    work without any issues.
    Your mileage may vary.

  • RoboHelp9 HTML Trial does not show images in Create PDF for Review

When I do Create PDF for Review, the pdf shows only the gray rectangular placeholders for our logo and another image at the top of each pages instead of the actual pictures.  Is this a bug or it is supposed to work like that?
Just in case this has anything to do with it:
Some of RH's PDF Creator Add-in X features did not work on my new Win7, 64-bit, Office2010 machine, and said I couldn't then install my Adobe Standard 7.0 CD because "you have a better product installed".  The techs got on my machine for 2 1/2 hrs. and couldn't get it to write pdf via Printed Documentation and were going to try to re-create it in their lab.  A week later I uninstalled RH's PDF Creator Add-in X and installed my Standard 7.0 and I can now do Printed Documentation to pdf.  Would this have caused the problem in first sentence?

I cannot be sure but I would say it is highly likely. PDF Review is designed to work with Acrobat 9 or X. I know Word 2010 has some issues with Acrobat 9 so if you are using 7, nothing would surprise me.

  • Adobe TrueType fonts missing from created PDF

When I create a PDF file everything comes through perfectly except the Adobe TrueType font text is missing (Adobe Garamond Pro). This used to work. File looks good on screen and prints fine.
If I switch to Garamond the PDF is created perfectly, now including all missing text.

Note that Adobe's Garamond Pro fonts are not TrueType fonts. They are OpenType CFF fonts.
In fact, that may be the key to why they are not embedded in your PDF files.
First, contrary to the response of Bill@VT, although the Standard joboptions for Adobe's PDF creation tools do not embed all fonts, the fonts that are not embedded are in an exception list. Using those joboptions, members of the Adobe Garamond Pro font family should properly embed in PDF files created either by (a) printing to the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance under Windows, (b) using the native PDF export from Adobe graphic arts applications (Illustrator, InDesign, etc.) as long as you don't use the Smallest Size joboptions, or (c) when using Microsoft Office applications, you use the Adobe PDFMaker option for PDF creation, Save as Adobe PDF again as long as you don't use the Smallest Size joboptions.
That having been said, the fact that the Garamond fonts (I assume that you are referring to the TrueType Garamond font family that Microsoft bundles with Windows and Office) embeds and Adobe Garamond Pro font don't embed leads me to believe that your real problem is that you are creating PDF by using the fairly defective save as PDF which is native to Microsoft Office on Windows. One of a number of bugs or limitations in Microsoft's PDF creation is that although it embeds TrueType fonts and OpenType TrueType fonts, it fails to embed OpenType CFF fonts. Not only doesn't Microsoft embed those fonts in the PDF file, but it improperly references the fonts in the generated PDF file such that when you display and/or print such PDF files, even if you have Adobe Garamond Pro installed on your system, those fonts are not used for display or print. (We have informed Microsoft of this bug, but they are apparently not interested in fixing their bug!)
If you already have Acrobat installed on your system, use the Save as Adobe PDF (from the file screen) or Create Adobe PDF from the Acrobat tab on the Office ribbon. Set the preferences to at least Standard, but preferably Hiqh Quality Print joboptions and you will end up with a proper PDF with the Adobe Garamond Pro (or any OpenType fonts) properly embedded)!
