Creating signed Java applet for Netscape 4x

I have created a signed jar with SuperUser privileges under Netscape.
public void init() {
try {
if( Class.forName("netscape.security.PrivilegeManager") != null ) {
netscape.security.PrivilegeManager.enablePrivilege("SuperUser");
} catch( ClassNotFoundException cnfe ) {
cnfe.printStackTrace();
With this I am getting following error without any dailog prompting to grant permission.
netscape.security.ForbiddenTargetException: User didn't grant the SuperUser privilege.
Please help.
Thanks
Satish

Then it's likely Netscape 4.x doesn't recognize the jar as being signed. How did you sign the jar?
Why didn't you ask this in the more appropriate Signed Applets forum?

  • Dynamic java applet for binary search tree

    dynamic java applet for deleting an element of a tree at any specified locationin the tree.

    sorry, having thought a bit more about it let me try to be more correct and concrete. say i have feature a at arbitrary chromosome position 7 and features b at positions 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10. right now i have to get the closest distance (Math.abs(7-6)) by doing brute force comparison of all values (Math.abs(7-1), Math.abs(7-2), so on). what i want to do is set up a binary tree thus (please forgive poor ASCII):
    5
    2 9
    1 3 6 10
    and get back the keys that the tree tried (since i know that 7 is not in the tree and a traditional binary search e.g. TreeMap.get(new Integer(7)) will return a null). i should get back 5, 9, 6, in an array/ArrayList and be able to find the closest feature b in three comparisons rather than 7. that doesn't seem like much but when you have a million b features the difference between 1000000 comparisons and log2(1000000) is pretty appreciable. so i am wondering if there is an extant class that will give me back the trace of attempted keys through a binary tree as described or, if not, if this would be horribly difficult to implement as an extension of TreeMap.

  • Can I create a java app for my palm zire 71 that uses floating point calc

    I am an eclipse user that is looking at studio creator 2 and was wondering if I could create a java app for my palm zire 71. I have read alot about no floating point support in midp... is that true for java on the palm? If so, how does one calculate with floats and doubles to do sqrt functions etc?
    Thanks in advance for your time
    Dean-O

    I looked at netbeans and it does not support floating points in midlets. Not good for palm app if no floating point ability. J2ME supports floating point but in netbeans... is uses midlets and there are no floating points. Now what does one do? Not that dreaded C++
    THanks in advance

    3. How can we get the tools ? do you provide it ?
    4. do you know any company that can make this type of java applet for JCOP 31 ?
    5. do you know any company that provide training to make this java applet for jcop31 ?

    4. Anyone can write you an applet. The specification is open. You could e.g. contact IBM or NXP directly.
    5. NXP offers twice a year a training in Europe and once a yeat in Asia. Contact the customer support at NXP. Also there is a workshop about the 'Art of Java Card Programming' at the smart-university.net (17th Sept., Sophia Antipolis, France). But I think this is for advanced Java Card programmers.

  • How can I sign My applet for IE and Netscape without JavaPlugIn?

    I think we can sign our applets with Javasigner.exe but this certificate is not being
    supported by IE and Netscape. If you want to use this certificate with IE and Nets.
    you must install JavaPlugIn to all users. I dont want to choose this way.
    I think we have one alternative for this purpose.
    For Netscape: Signing Tool
    For IE: The program that included SDK-Java
    But I could not find SDK-Java any where.
    I think Microsoft have gave up to support the Java certification...
    I am not sure.
    How can I prepare signed applet that can be run on IE and Netscape?
    This applet will have some permissions.

    The tool you need for signing cab files for the MS JVM is signtool.exe. I beleive that the .NET version of this tool can be used, as the signing process was not Java specific. You do need certificates in a different format than for jarsigner or the netscape signing tool. Verisign will happily sell you two different certificates, but there is probably a way to convert between formats using openssl or similar.
    You'll also need to package your files in a cab instead of a jar. cabarc.exe is what we use here. Again, it does not seem to be Java specific, so you can probably still find it despite Microsoft no longer making their Java tools available.

    Hi,
    this is exactly the same problem I am facing here. Each time I try to grant/enable a capability, it is automatically denied without any dialog. Do we forget something?
    I only signed the applet with the netscape signtool, not with a real certificate from verisign or such, does that matter?
    Please let me know if you found out how to do it.

    START OF DOC
    How To Sign a Java Applet
    The purpose of this document is to document the steps required to sign and use an
    applet using a self-signed cert or CA authorized in the JDK 1.3 plugin.
    The original 9 steps of this process were posted by user irene67 on suns message forum:
    http://forums.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=63&thread=132769
    -----begin irene67's original message -----
    These steps describe the creation of a self-signed applet. This is useful for testing purposes. For use of public reachable applets, there will be needed a "real" certificate issued by an authority like VeriSign or Thawte. (See step 10 - no user will import and trust a self-signed applet from an unkown developer).
    The applet needs to run in the plugin, as only the plugin is platform- and browser-independent. And without this indepence, it makes no sense to use java...
    1. Create your code for the applet as usual.
    It is not necessary to set any permissions or use security managers in
    the code.
    2. Install JDK 1.3
    Path for use of the following commands: [jdk 1.3 path]\bin\
    (commands are keytool, jar, jarsigner)
    Password for the keystore is any password. Only Sun knows why...
    perhaps ;-)
    3. Generate key: keytool -genkey -keyalg rsa -alias tstkey
    Enter keystore password: *******
    What is your first and last name?
    [Unknown]: Your Name
    What is the name of your organizational unit?
    [Unknown]: YourUnit
    What is the name of your organization?

    [Unknown]: US
    Is CN=Your Name, OU=YourUnit, O=YourOrg, L=YourCity, ST=YS, C=US
    correct?
    [no]: yes
    (wait...)
    Enter key password for tstkey
    (RETURN if same as keystore password):
    (press [enter])
    4. Export key: keytool -export -alias tstkey -file tstcert.crt
    Enter keystore password: *******
    Certificate stored in file tstcert.crt
    5. Create JAR: jar cvf tst.jar tst.class
    Add all classes used in your project by typing the classnames in the
    same line.
    added manifest
    adding: tst.class(in = 849) (out= 536)(deflated 36%)

    s = signature was verified
    m = entry is listed in manifest
    k = at least one certificate was found in keystore
    i = at least one certificate was found in identity scope
    jar verified.
    9. Create HTML-File for use of the Applet by the Sun Plugin 1.3
    (recommended to use HTML Converter Version 1.3)
    10. (Omitted See Below)
    -----end irene67's original message -----
    To make the plug-in work for any browser you have two options with the JDK 1.3 plugin.
    1) Is to export a cert request using the key tool and send it to a CA verification source like verisign.
    When the reponse comes back, import it into the keystore overwriting the original cert for the generated key.
    To export request:
    keytool -certreg -alias tstkey -file tstcert.req
    To import response:
    keytool -import -trustcacerts -alias tstkey -file careply.crt
    An applet signed with a cert that has been verified by a CA source will automatically be recognized by the plugin.
    2) For development or otherwise, you may want to just use your self-signed certificate.
    In that case, the JDK 1.3 plugin will recognize all certs that have a root cert located in the JDK 1.3 cacerts keystore.
    This means you can import your test certificate into this keystore and have the plugin recognize your jars when you sign them.
    To import self-signed certificate into the cacerts keystore, change directory to where the JDK plugin key store is located.
    For JDK 1.3.0_02: C:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3.0_02\lib\security
    For JDK 1.3.1: C:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3.1\lib\security
    Import your self-signed cert into the cacerts keystore:
    keytool -import -keystore cacerts -storepass changeit -file tstcert.crt
    (the password is literally 'changeit')
    Now, regardless of which method you use, the applet should be recognized as coming from a signed jar. The user can choose to activate it if he / she chooses. If your applet uses classes from multiple jars, for example Apache's Xerce's parser, you will need to sign those jars as well to allow them to execute in the client's brower. Otherwise, only the classes coming from the signed jar will work with the java.security.AllPermission setting and all other classes from unsigned jars will run in the sandbox.
    NOTE: Unless otherwise specified by the -keystore command in all keytool and jarsigner operations, the keystore file used is named '.keystore' in the user's home directory.
    The first time any keystore is accessed (including the default) it will be created and secured with the first password given by the user. There is no way to figure out the password if you forget it, but you can delete the default file and recreate it if necessary. For most operations, using the -keystore command is safer to keep from cluttering or messing up your default keystore.

  • Java Applet crashes Netscape upon Exit?

    Hello, I created an Applet that I am opening in NEtscape. When I make an attempt to exit (i.e. destroy) the APplet, it crashes the whole netscape. It even happens within Netscape 7. Is there a way around this since it makes a big problem for me to use the applet if it is going to crash my Netscape browser. I`ll appreciate any suggestions or comments, thanks Ivan

    The main class that everything is in is called GUI.java and it is a frame. In order to open this as an Applet in netscape, I created a GUI_RMIApplet.java file. And The GUI_RMIApplet.html file opens the GUI_RMIApplet.java file which in return opens GUI.java. The exit call is in GUI.java file.
    The html file code is as follows:
    <EMBED type="application/x-java-applet;version=1.3" CODE = "musr.client.gui.GUI
    _RMIApplet.class" CODEBASE = "." ARCHIVE = "jar/musr.jar" NAME = "MUSR GUI APPLE
    T" WIDTH = 400 HEIGHT = 300 ALIGN = middle VSPACE = 0 HSPACE = 0 UBBoption = "de
    velop" scriptable=false pluginspage="http://java.sun.com/products/plugin/1.3/pl
    ugin-install.html">
    <NOEMBED>
    The GUI_RMIApplet.java code is:
    package musr.client.gui;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import java.applet.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.rmi.Naming;
    import java.rmi.RemoteException;
    import musr.server.*;
    public class GUI_RMIApplet extends Applet {
    boolean isStandalone = false;
    String message = "The application will launch in a separate window";
    GUI_RMIServer obj = null;
    /**Get a parameter value*/
    public String getParameter(String key, String def) {
    return isStandalone ? System.getProperty(key, def) :
    (getParameter(key) != null ? getParameter(key) : def);
    /**Construct the applet*/
    public GUI_RMIApplet() {
    /**Initialize the applet*/
    public void init() {
    try {
    jbInit();
    } catch (Exception e) {
    System.out.println("GUI_RMI exception: " + e.getMessage());
    e.printStackTrace();
    /**Component initialization*/
    private void jbInit() {
    // Main bulk for this applet
    GUI gui = new GUI();
    gui.setVisible(true);
    public void paint(Graphics g) {
    g.drawString(message, 25, 50);
    /**Get Applet information*/
    public String getAppletInfo() {
    return "Applet Information";
    /**Get parameter info*/
    public String[][] getParameterInfo() {
    return null;
    //static initializer for setting look & feel
    static {
    try {
    //UIManager.setLookAndFeel(UIManager.getSystemLookAndFeelClassName());
    //UIManager.setLookAndFeel(UIManager.getCrossPlatformLookAndFeelClassName());
    catch(Exception e) {
    And, the GUI.java class calls these funcitons when exit menu button is selected:
    GUI.this.dispose(); // disposes the frame
              System.exit(-1); // disposes the applet (?or not?)
    I think the System.exit button is messing things up but I don't know what other function I can use to close teh applet.
    Hope this is enough information.

  • Signed Java Applet

    I have written an applet with Netbeans. When I click on Clean and Build then Netbean create a jar file "Test.jar" and also another folder called lib in the same directory. I've signed the Test.jar. Basically this applet upload files to server with FTP. So when Applet loads into browser then I am able to select files but when I click on upload then it stops. So my question is:
    1. Have I also need to sign all dependent jar files?
    2. My directory structure is as follow:
    C:\AppletPage.html C:\Test.jar C:\lib
    and code in html file is as follow
    <applet code="UploadGUI.class"
    archive="test.jar"
    width=400 height=400></applet>Please advice me where am I wrong?
    Thanks in Advance

  • Java applet for Creditcard Validation

    Can anyone recommend a site which provides an example/source code for a JAVA applet which would have the following minimum requirements:
    1) Input for creditcard type
    2) Input for cc expiry
    3) Input for cc number
    4) Luhn 10 validation
    5) Validation that cc type matches syntax for cc number
    There doesn't seem to be any examples that I could find.
    Thanx in advance...
    Warren

    i dont think any one will use this, as you will need to sign the applet first which costs you some amount and for credit card verification also you need to pay some amount so the amount is double when compared to using HTML in your site.

  • Java Applets in Netscape with EMBED   tag

    Hi,
    I tried to run the examples on the:
    http://192.9.48.9/products/plugin/1.3/demos/applets.html
    Demo paged off of the plug page and in Netscape 4.08 it
    does not know there is a plugin , in Netscape 6.0
    it knows there is a plug in but won't use the one installed on the machine (1.3.1) which is the same level as the demo.
    Any clues how to get applets to use the Java Plugin with Netscape? This works fine in IE
    Thanks!
    BTW- I'm using NT 4.0 os.

    Probably 1.3.1 conflicts with 1.3.1_01 or 1.3.1_02.
    You need the HTML Converter from the Java PlugIn download page to make your page ready for Netscape 4.x. Go to http://java.sun.com/products/plugin/1.3/converter.html (Java Plug-in HTML Converter Download) to download your copy of the HTML Converter. Watch for the current version, it is 1.3, not 1.1.1.
    Download your page, strip out the <embed/> and <object/> elements, uncomment the <applet/> element and run the HTML Converter.
    Additional Information:
    Netscape 6 does not use the <embed/> element anymore since it isn't a html element but was a proprietary netscape tag. Netscape 6 uses the <object/> element like Internet Explorer and Opera.
    Another note on <embed/>:
    Use of <embed/> is strongly discouraged, but there's no other chance. Let's hope support for Netscape 4.x won't be neccessary any more in a few months.
    A note on <applet/>:
    The <applet/> element is deprecated since HTML 4.01 or earlier (http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/struct/objects.html Objects in HTML 4). One should use the <object> element instead anyway. The semantic description of html elements found in the technical report of the html 4.01 recommendation is still valid for current html versions of today (XHTML 1.1 and XHTML Basic 1.0).
    There's also a funny page of Sun about HTML: http://java.sun.com/products/plugin/1.3/docs/tags.html. Don't take that page too serious since it states it is talking about HTML, but it isn't.
    If you use the HTML Converter, be sure to use the Extended (Standard + All Browsers/Platforms) template to tell Netscape, Opera and Internet Explorer regardless of the used version to display the applet correctly. But watch out: the generated code is not HTML and will perhaps even crash your page in Internet Explorer 6 and browsers that rely on the HTML standard! It also won't work with Netscape 6 if there is a different version of the Java Plugin installed more recently than the requested. I have SDK 1.3, 1.3.1 and 1.4 installed, and Netscape 6 wants to download the 1.3.1 Plugin.
    The best way to make your applet work in really every browser is to study what the converter is trying to do and code it by yourself in a conformant way. Be sure not to tell the browser the Plugin version to use to avoid the neccessarity of downloading outdated plugins and installing several plugins (1.2, 1.2.1, 1.2.2, 1.3, 1.3.1, 1.3.1_01, 1.3.1_02, 1.4...).

  • I can't run signed Java Applets

    HI
    I have a java applet where I need to have acces to a local file, but I can't get IE to run the applet. (IE do not come with the Secutiy Warning window.)
    From the homepage, I run the applet via:
    <applet name=read_file code="read_file.class" width="0" height="0">
    <script language="JavaScript">
    document.read_file.file_read();
    </script>
    And the java code is:
    import java.applet.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.io.*;
    public class read_file extends Applet{
         public char[][] ip;
         public int counter;
         public String te="dette er en java test";
    public void init() {
    public void file_read() {
         String str;
         counter =0;
         try {
         BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new FileReader("c:\test\config.txt"));
              while ((str = in.readLine()) != null){
                   ip[counter] = str.toCharArray();
                   counter++;
              in.close();
         } catch(IOException e) {
    public void test() {
    I have signed the cab file with:
    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft.NET\SDK\v1.1\Bin\signcode.exe" -j "C:\Program Files\Microsoft.NET\SDK\v1.1\Bin\JAVASIGN.DLL" -jp High -v hjl.pvk -spc hjl.spc -n "oil" -i "www.vedikke endnu-.dk" "C:\Documents and Settings\rbn\Desktop\UIp\hjemmeside\read_file.cab"
    and maket the cab fil with:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\rbn\Desktop\UIp\cab\BIN\MAKECAB.EXE" "C:\Documents and Settings\rbn\Desktop\UIp\java\read_file.class" "C:\Documents and Settings\rbn\Desktop\UIp\hjemmeside\read_file.cab"
    What do I need to different ?

    I see no reason why you want to make this applet for the msjvm, here is how you do it with the sun sdk:
    Signing applets:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=63&thread=524815
    second post and last post for the java class file
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=63&thread=409341
    4th post explaining how to set up your own policy with your own keystore
    (my copy and paste fingers are really getting tired now, copyd and pasted this
    for about a 100 times now)
    Notice some differences in the html code of the examples (they don't use the applet tag)
    If you're aiming for the msjvm because you don't want any support form MS in
    the near future and want to delever a legacy unsupported unmaintainable applet
    than I have to ask you how you compiled the applet. If you used the SUN sdk
    then are you aware that the msjvm cannot handle java version higher than 1.1?
    So you have to compile it like this: javac -source 1.3 -target 1.1 ....
    Your html file seems to be missng the cabbase value so how do you expect
    IE to find the cab file?
