Creating threads in init for servlet (advanced)

Hello
we have a servlet ..in servlets init method we are creating new threads by calling the Timer class like this
BGMSchedul = new Timer(true);
BGM = new BackManager();
BGMSchedul.scheduleAtFixedRate(BGM, 10000, 30000); //every 30 secondsProblem is that during our stress testing on IBM WSAD we've noticed errors like J2CA0075W: An active transaction should be present
Upon researching this issue further i found this link http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=180&uid=swg21231761
which i think suggests that the servlet shouldnt be creating threads which make J2C connections. Our thread is making the DB connection.
does nay one have experince with this sort of problem? is it a bad programming construct to create threds in a servlet? if so..where should we be creating our threads? we want this thread to run every 30 seconds and this is a web appliction.
I'd appreciate any help

I've created a POJO class that implements servletcontextlistener and took out the time thread from servlet and placed it in pojo's contextInitialized method. however, i still get the same warning.

  • Thread pool for Servlets

              Hi all,
              I am facing a big problem while doing a concurrent testing of my web application.
              I am testing with 60 concurrent users.
              I have set the database connection pool minimum capacity to 50, capacity increment
              to 10 and maximum capacity to 100.
              While there is no problem in getting database connection, the session variables
              are getting mixed up (i.e. the session variable for one user is coming up as that

              Does it have something to do with configuring some pool for servlets threads or

              Please help.

  • Thread ID for servlets implementing SingleThreadModel

    Container creates different instances for every request to a Servlet implementing SingleThreadModel. So I tried to print thread IDs for such a Servlet by calling Thread.currentThread().getId(). I expected different thread IDs for every request to this Servlet. But what I noticed is - the same thread ID is logged several times (I got thread id 98 and 99 more than once). Can someone please explain why this is behaving like that?

    If container creates a thread pool and if it assigns different requests to same thread (fetched from the pool), then what's the point in creating multiple instances of one servlet?

  • Listeners, load a class on startup and creating threads in infinite loop

    This is an identical post to the one I made in the jsp forum. I do this as I know, being a regular here, that there are equally good people(in j2ee web application development) in both these forum, but many of them stick to their particular forums of choice - jsp / servlets.
    I was wondering if there is any means by which I could launch my own class when tomcat starts (in the same jvm).
    1. I need one or more Thread/TimerTask because the requirement is such that the application would have continous data drops (in the form of logs) which has to be picked up, parsed and pushed into a db. Another part of the application reads the data from the db on requests (http) and displays it over the web. The thread has to poll for arrival of new logs and then hand it over to a framework for parsing and inserting the parsed data to a db.
    2. I know that I can possibly use a servlet with a load-on-startup value greater than 1 and code my requirement into the init method. However, using a servlet for a functionality different from servicing http requests has me worried. (valid ?), not to mention the fact that Iam very uneasy about creating threads from within Servlets.
    3. I googled hard and found that I could probably use a tomcat specific context lifecycle listener.
    4. I could also possibly use the servlet api - the ServletContextListener.
    5. I have rejected #2 and settled on either #3 or #4 - the ServletContextListener or Tomcat specific Lifecycle Listener, though the later, as I said binds me to Tomcat (which is ok for me). Are there any other specific (dis)advantages of using either especially when I have to create threads from within them (on context startup)? Other than memory leaks, killing the thread objects & associated resources on context shutdown, is there anything else that I need to watch out for while using threads.
    6. I wonder is there is there a plain startup hook available in tomcat (rather than listeners) - from where I can launch a class that starts a thread in the same jvm as tomcat's ?
    Thanks In Advance,
    Ram.

    Anybody ? Sorry for bumping up.
    Thanks,
    Ram.

  • Creating threads in Weblogic

    For a variety of reasons I need to write my own messaging bridge between Weblogic and MQ. The reasons have been validated by BEA, so I'm not completely off my rocker :)
    I can either write this as a standalone java application that acts as a client to weblogic's JMS server, or as a deployed webapp (using the ServletContextListener method to start/stop it). Either way the app will <shudder>create one thread per queue</shudder> and listen on that queue until a message arrives.
    The pros of a deployed application (cost-free clustering, management, can use a webapp to manage the threads/queues, etc) leads me in that direction, but creating threads in a J2EE server dubious at best.
    Ideally this webapp runs in its own execute queue, and the holy grail is to have the threads run in that execute queue. However, there doesn't seem to be any supported way to create threads from an execute queue.
    Has anyone done anything like this? Any suggestions on how to spawn and manage the threads properly? Should it be deployed or stand-alone?
    cheers
    mike

    Hello,
    The webapp route sounds better to me than a standalone java app, you will get things up and running a lot more quickly and get all the goodies associated with webapps.
    You don't explicity create threads from the queue for example in the way you get connections from a connection pool. Once you have created and configuered your execute queue you just add a few init parameters to your web.xml deployment descriptor:
    <servlet>
    <servlet-name>MainServlet</servlet-name>
    <jsp-file>/myapplication/critical.jsp</jsp-file>
    <init-param>
    <param-name>wl-dispatch-policy</param-name>
    <param-value>CriticalAppQueue</param-value>
    </init-param>
    </servlet>
    see:
    http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs81/perform/AppTuning.html#1105201
    for complete instructions.

  • How to create different log files for each of web applications deployed in OC4J

    Hi All,
    I am using OC4J(from Oracle) v1.0.2.2 and Windows2000. Now I want to know
    1. how to create different log files for each of my deployed web applications ?
    2. what are the advantages in running multiple instances of oc4j and in what case we should run
    multiple instances of OC4J ?
    3. how to run OC4J as Windows2000 Service rather than Windows2000 Application ?
    Thanks and Regards,
    Kumar.

    Hi Avi,
    First of all I have given a first reading to log4j and I think there will some more easy way of logging debugging messages than log4j (If you could provide me a detailed explanation of a servlet,jsp,java bean that uses log4j and how to use log4j then it will be very helpful for me). The other easy ways (if I am not using log4j) to my problem i.e creating different log files for each of web applications deployed in oc4j are
    I have created multiple instances of OC4J that are configured to run on different ports and so on each instance I have deployed a single web application . And I started the 2 oc4j instances by transferring thier error/log messages to a file. And the other way is ..
    I have download from jakarta site a package called servhelper . This servhelper is a thread that is started in a startup servlet and stopped in the destroy method of that startup servlet. So this thread will automatically capture all the system.out.println's and will print those to a file. I believe that this thread program is synchronized. So in this method I need not run multiple instances of OC4J instead each deployed web application on single instance of oc4j uses the same thread program (ofcourse a copy of thread program is put in each of the deployed web applications directories) to log messages on to different log files.
    Can you comment on my above 2 approached to logging debugging messages and a compartive explanation to LOG4J and how to use LOG4J using a simple servlet, simple jsp is appreciated ...
    Thanks and Regards,
    Ravi.

  • How to create a new row for a VO based on values from another VO?

    Hi, experts.
    in jdev 11.1.2.3,
    How to create a new row for VO1 based on values from another VO2 in the same page?
    and in my use case it's preferable to do this from the UI rather than from business logic layer(EO).
    Also I have read Frank Nimphius' following blog,but in his example the source VO and the destination VO are the same.
    How-to declaratively create new table rows based on existing row content (20-NOV-2008)
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/adf/learnmore/13-create-with-params-169140.pdf
    I have tried:
    1.VO1(id,amount,remark1) and VO2(id,amount,remark2) are based on different EO,but render in same page,
    2.Drag and drop a Createwithparams button for VO1(id,amount,remark),
    3.add: Create insertinside Createwithparams->Nameddata(amount),
    4.set NDName:amount, NDValue:#{bindings.VO2.children.Amount}, NDtype:oracle.jbo.domain.Number.
    On running,when press button Createwithparams, cannot create a new row for VO1, and get error msg:

    Hi,CM,
    I'm really very appreciated for your quick reply! You know, today is Saturday, it's not a day for everyone at work.
    My principal requirement is as follows:
    1.select/check some rows from VO2, and for each selection create a new row with some attributes from VO2 as default values for VO1's corresponding attributes, and during this process the user may be cancel/uncheck or redo some of the selections.
    --so it's better to implement it in UI rather than in EO.
    2.it's better to implement this function with declarative way as in Frank Nimphius' blog.
    --little Jave/JS coding, the better. I only have experience in ORACLE FORMS, little experience in JAVA/JS.
    In order to get full information for the requirements of my use case, can take a check at:
    How to set default value for a VO query bind variable in a jspx page?
    (the end half of the thread: I have a more realworld requirement similar to the above requirement is:
    Manage bank transactions for clients. and give invoices to clients according to their transaction records. One invoice can contain one or many transactions records. and one transaction records can be split into many invoices.

  • Get Thread information in a Servlet

    Hi,
    I'm wondering if there is a way to get the running thread information in a Servlet, Something like an ID. For example, each time the Servlet receives a new request, the Servlet container will create a new thread to run the code, I want to know and log the information of this Thread.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance

    Not sure why you want to know what thread it is. The container multi-threads for you. If you want to store a value for use later in the thread, use ThreadLocal. If you want to spin off other threads, J2EE frowns on this, but you can do so. I'm not at all clear why the name or ID is important, since it is normally arbitrary and implementation-dependent on the J2EE container. If you are simply trying to log which thread is doing what, Log4J and the Logging API allow you to specify a pattern that will include the thread name without any coding on your part. So, I am having trouble understanding why you think you have this requirement.

    Hi,
    As far as i know , you need to insert a droptargetinfo only once in the table level not on every row.
    Try to do on design time what you are dynamically doing ? You would not get a chance to to insert a droptragetinfo on every row.

    Thanks and Regards,
    Ravi.

  • Best practice for Servlet EJB integration

              I'm wondering what the best practice is for Servlet EJB integration in terms of
              caching the home and remote objects. My understanding is that the Home object
              is threadsafe and could therefore be cached as an attribute of the Servlet. This
              would remove the need for a JNDI lookup for each request. Similarly caching the
              ProxyObject would yield further savings. However, I have noticed that most examples
              don't use either of these practices. Why not?
              Thanks in advance,
              Geordie

    This has been answered repeatedly. WL allows you to cache JNDI context
              objects, ejb homes and remotes without any problems. (EJB remote interfaces
              must only be used by one thread at a time, but that requirement is provided
              by the EJB spec itself.)

  • Creating a windows Service for Weblogic 12c Domain hosting Apex 2.2 listener

    Hi Guys,
    Does anyone have experience of Weblogic 12c under windows?
    I have some difficulties to create a windows service for a domain.
    Here is the script to create the service:
    echo off
    SETLOCAL
    set DOMAIN_NAME=PMU
    set USERDOMAIN_HOME=C:\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\domains\PMU
    set SERVER_NAME=LICORNE2012
    set WL_HOME=C:\Oracle\Middleware\wlserver_12.1
    set PRODUCTION_MODE=true
    set JAVA_OPTIONS=-Dweblogic.Name=LICORNE2012
    set WLS_USER=weblogic
    set WLS_PW=password
    set ADMIN_URL=http://LICORNE2012:7001
    set MEM_ARGS=-Xms256m –Xmx256m
    call "C:\Oracle\Middleware\wlserver_12.1\server\bin\installSvc.cmd"
    ENDLOCAL
    The service is created and when I start the service, it start then stop few second after.
    Here is the error I am getting.

    Thanks for your help
    jko

    - not sure about your script, but obviously it doesn't detect the name of your managed server LICORNE2012 since there seems to be an admin server only in that domain.
    - alternatively you might try the approach posted by the AMIS guys
    Weblogic Admin and Managed servers as a Windows service
    - btw: having your domain under user_projects is not best practice (but not the problem here).
    good luck!

  • Desperate, help please Servlet.service() for servlet jsp threw exception

    Hi,
    I have completed 99.99% of project development, when I am about to deploy JSC throws "Servlet.service() for servlet jsp threw exception javax.faces.el.EvaluationException: java.lang.NullPointerException" I can't understand why.
    My application was working absolutely fine, I can't understand why its throwing exception now.
    I tried debuging, but i can't understand where exactly its throwing exception and whats the error.
    I would really appreciate your help, I have spent almost a day trying to figure out but din't get anywhere.
    here is my server.log

    hi,
    I just found that this exception is thrown from function
    public UIViewRoot createView(FacesContext context, String viewId) {
    UIViewRoot viewRoot = handler.createView(context, viewId);
    context.getExternalContext().getRequestMap().put(CREATED_VIEW, viewId);
    setupPageBean(context, viewRoot);
    return viewRoot;
    in viewHandlerImpl.java.
    Has anyone got ideas about this???
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    cheers
