Creation of Dimensions

Hi ..
I am creating dimension for a cube.In this scenerio I struckup because here I am having 30 characterstic each of them are not related to each other in any manner.
  How to resolve this issue..?
  please help me...!
Thanx in advance.

Hi,
you need to analyze the data carefully. Then try to assign the characteristics to the dimensions to keep them as small as possible. May be you need to do some try and error (loading, checking, deleting, modelling, loading....) After each load of representative data run report sap_infocube_designs to check the cube and if necessary change the dimensions again. Also, check if it is necessary to create line items.

  • Dimension hierarchy creation

Does exist best practices for creation of dimension hierarchy based on table like
CAT_ID,PARENT_CAT_ID,CATEGORY_NAME where hierarchy tree might have different number of levels:
    level1-level2
    root -- level1-level2-level3
    level1

Thaks for your answer, I already read those articles. Actually question was about creating in OBI of hierarchy which has different number of child levels like this:
    Organization - Division1-> Division1.2->Division1.3
    - Division2-> Division2.1->Division2.2->Division2.3
Number of parent divisions under Organization is unlimited (Siebel model) and in table on which hierarchy is based not denormalized.

  • SCD's type 2 conflict with Oracle Dimension Object

    Hi everybody.
I have a little problem understanding Oracle Dimension Objects and how to use it with SCD type 2.
Oracle's documentation says: There must be a 1:n relationship between a parent and children. A parent can have one or more children, but a child can have only one parent.
This makes me think that if i have, for example, a department 1 and zone 'A', this department ALWAYS have to map the same zone, the zone 'A' can have more than one department but one department have to map every time to the same zone.
This is a correct example: department 1 maps to zone 'A' everytime
    Employee Department Zone
    1 1 A
    2 1 A
This is an incorrect example: department 1 DOES NOT MAP to zone 'A' everytime
    Employee Department Zone
    1 1 A
    2 1 B
Oracle's documentation says: You must not create dimensions in any schema that does not fully satisfy the dimensional relationships. Incorrect results can be returned from queries otherwise.
OK, but what can we do if the department's zone actually change???
In SCD type 2 we use the following technique:
ID Employee Department Zone Start End
    1 1 1 A 2010-01-01 2010-01-02
    2 1 1 B 2010-01-03 null
Now we can see that SCD type 2 does not follow the requirements that ORACLE recommends for the creation of Dimension Objects, I mean department 1 now maps to the older zone A and the newer zone B.
    Is it correct?
Can somebody clarify this? I think is a conflict.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Is it correct? No, you are wrong. You mixed dimension attribute historization and hierarchy relationship.
Behaviour of mapping for loading SCD2 dimension depends on how did you implement Department and Zone entities in your dimension -
as a general attributes of lowest dimension level (EMPLOYEE) or as a higher levels in dimension hierarchy.
If you define Department and Zone as attributes of EMPLOYEE level than behaviour of loading algorithm will be as you described -
it is because OWB doesn't know that Department and Zone attributes compose hierarchy.
But when you define additional levels Department and Zone - OWB tries to resolve conflicts over hierarchy in very simple way -
for each child dimension value it choose single parent with minimal business key value.
In your case loaded data will be:
ID Employee Department Zone Start End
    1 1 1 A 2010-01-01 2010-01-02
    2 1 1 A 2010-01-03 null
Since 10.2.0.4 patchset there is also Hierarchy Versioning feature (so configured for versioning level also contains EFFECTIVE_DATE, EXPIRATION_DATE columns).

    Oleg

  • Prefix for Hierarchies

I cannot change prefix for hierarchies in dimension properties, when I select some Hierarchy, change prefix to some other letter(s), click update, and reselect Hierarchy to view it updated, i always get dimension prefix !
This happens also during creation of dimension, no matter what I write in prefix during hierarchies definition, in created dimension it shows dimension prefix instead...
Changing name and description of hierarchy works.
OWB is 9.2.0.3, this also happened on base 9.2.
In 9.0.4 it was working properly.
    Please help...

    Hi Piotr,
We have identified as a problem as well and are investigating this. It is logged under bug 3378279, which you should be able to track in metalink.

  • Invisible structure in Analytic Workspace Manager after importing from EIF

    Hello,
I got problem with migration OFA structure (6.3.4) to Oracle OLAP. My Oracle Database is 11.2 Enterprise Edition
    1. I've exported OFA database do eif file.
    2. I've created user in Oracle database, grant olap_user and created directory
    3. I installed Analytic Workspace Manager 11.2.0.3.0A
    4. After connection on Analytic Workspaces I run 'Create Analytic Workspace from EIF file ...' -> The import was succeeded
Here is the problem - there is no visible imported structure in the tree under Analytic Workspaces. I think that structures were properly imported. That Analytic Workspace is in the sql results:
    select dbal.owner||'.'||substr(dbal.table_name,4) awname, sum(dbas.bytes)/1024/1024 as mb, dbas.tablespace_name from dba_lobs dbal, dba_segments dbas where dbal.column_name = 'AWLOB' and dbal.segment_name = dbas.segment_name group by dbal.owner, dbal.table_name, dbas.tablespace_name order by dbal.owner, dbal.table_name
I've also tried using Analytic Workspace Manager Worksheet.
    AW CREATE OFA_TEST
IMPORT ALL FROM EIF FILE 'c/baza.eif' DATA DFNS
    UPDATE
    COMMIT
The results are the same :(
What else should be done ? can anyone pls help me on this??
    Grzegorz

    Grzegorz,
OFA to OLAP is not an easy thing if you are trying to do it by hand. That is why we built an OFA conversion utility into our product. Example time for Full OFA to OLAP/Escendo conversion is about three days for an OFA system of 300-400Gb, including data, processes (Solves) reports, saved selections etc.)
Part of the problem is that OFA is an application which uses a ton of back end catalogs which drive everything. It also makes very heavy use of saved selections internally which makes straight export and import tough.
The overall process is that all of the visible structures need to be created within OLAP so that they are visible. We support both 'public' (ergo visible, metadata based) objects as well as 'back end' structures which are not visible to the front end. If you need business logic translated over it can get complicated to do by hand as well, since things don't map directly into the way Oracle does things in AWM now, due to some differences between the architectures.
One of the great things about putting your OFA into OLAP is that everything becomes available to any standard SQL reporting application.
Our IDE is a full mulit-developer environment which allows multiple developers to work even within the same AW, for any operation, including creation of dimensions, measures etc. as well as the editing of code in programs & models.
Are you just trying to get the data in? or are you wanting to use the system like you would use OFA?

Below is the script which is free with CS4. Is there anybody who can modify this script in a way which provide the creation date and dimension of the images in image catalog.

  • Creation of a Date Dimension Table

Is there an algorithm (PL/SQL or otherwise) out there somewhere that can be shared that I can use to create a Date Dimension so that I do not have to re-invent the wheel.
    Thank you
    Bob Spahn

    Bob,
In the OWB 9.2, there is one sample mapping for time data creation; all you need to do is follow the instructions and use the code. This is part of your OWB client installation.
    Path is {OWBHome}/owb/misc/time.
    cheers

  • Consolidation operators during Dimension creation

    Hi everyone,
During dimension hierarchy creation, by default all Generations get default (+) addition as the consolidation operator.
How can I ignore(~) few members from consolidations at same or different generations ?
    Thank you in advance

a detailed list of member property codes can be found in the online docs:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12825_01/epm.111/esb_dbag/frameset.htm?dotrules.htm#dotrules1047244
you can not only influence the unary operator, but other attributes as well.
    Hope this helps.

  • Is there any limit in Dimensions creation

Hi Friends,<BR> Ques :1<BR><BR>Is there any limit for dimensions creations in Essbase can we create more than 11 dimensions for exampls like a banking project.i want to the limit of dimensions creations? <BR><BR>Ques: 2<BR><BR>Once we create a outline[dimesion & members] if client wants to add some more dimension then we create the additional dimension to the existing outline if yes then we add to delete all the data & freshly we had to load the data once again in the cubes.<BR><BR>Pls help me friends by solving the above queries?<BR><BR>Thanks & Regards<BR>

<p>Hi Syed,<br>Ans1: Theoritically Yes. But if you go on increasing the dimensionsthe number of blocks(if the new dimension is sparse).<br>the block size (if the new dimension is dense) may be theissues.<br>If you are in planning application. there is a limit of 20dimesions.(6-system defined(Account, Entity,Scenario,Version,Timeand Period), 14 custom defined)<br><br>Ans2: Once you create the outline and if client want to add adimension. you can do that. Whn you are adding new dimension itwill ask which member in new dimension you want to associate tehpresent data.<br><br>hope this helps.</p>

  • Automatic creation of new dimension members

    Hello all,
Bit of a long post so please bear with me.
I am about to embark on only my third BPC project after having spent several years implementing solutions using BusinessObjects Planning (formerly SRC software), and am still struggling to come up with an elegant solution to the fact that I cannot save data to dimension elements unless they are already explicitly defined in the dimension member list (presumably due to cube architecture).
Those of you who have used BOP/SRC will remember this as unvalidated dimensions.
I find having to first go to admin and pre create members before being able to use an input schedule to save data against them is very restrictive.
I'm hoping one of you guys can help me improve on the workaround I currently use.
For example I have a 'bid submission' input schedule that is used by the user to submit bids for increased budget, capital or revenue, capturing basic costs and commentary. The user selects a bid number from a combo box which is populated by using an EVLST formula to read in pre created dimension members. I have to save a flag to the db which I then use to exclude already used numbers when feeding the combo box on future submissions.
Which works ok but if I have a hierarchy on bid number based on say, cost centre, how do I get around the fact that number ranges have to be pre-assigned to cost centre, Cost Centre A = 1 to 1000, Cost Centre B = 1001 to 2000 etc. What happens if I go over the 1000 on Cost centre A? I then get non contiguous ranges per cost centre.
Is it possible for the bid number to be dictated by the user when they start to fill in the bid submission? Or give the impression that they are?
Or if the client has a bid number format that cannot be pre created? Eg incorporating things like year or person etc. This information could be save separately but not within the bid number. Is it possible to save data to dimension property columns from an input schedule?
    Hope you guys can help
    Many thanks
    Phil

  • Creation of New Dimensions

    Dear
I want to create new dimensions as I have only ASGRUN and ASGPTO_YTD in the balance dimension form
Secondly I want to store running balances of an element value start from employee joining date to end of service.
    Thanks

    what is your legislation?
If there exists a localisation for your legislation, then you should have more then 2 balance dimensions.
If there is no localization, creating one (from ZZ) should you also give more then 2 dimensions. (see ML 261452.1)
So i'm surprised you do not have the ASGITD (Inception to date, which accumulates run results from the hire date on).
There is also a standard concurrent program to add extra dimensions, but i would first try to understand why the seeded ASGITD is not there.

  • Creation of Multi Provider, using InfoCubes | Error in assigning dimensions

    Hi All.
I am tryin to create a multi provider using five Info Cubes,  sat A, B, C, D, E. Now all of them have chars and KF's. some  of them are common.
I selected the relevant info providers, then in the Identification part, I selected "Select All" for Chars/ Time chars as well as KF's.
now when I am trying to Activate the Multi Provider, it says  " No Dimension Assigned to InfoObject x, y, z and so. on ".
its clear that there is problem in assigning dimensions fr chars/kf's.
So in the Edit Multiprovider screen, I click on Dimensions. Then it prompts me to select "One" InfoProvider.( The options being from A, B, C, D, E) and if i select any one, (say A),the chars/KF's present in A, are getting assigned the dimensions, but the chars/kf's from other Info Cubes arent geting the dimension assigned.
what to do now? can any one help me out.please
    points will be assigned..:)

    Arun Kumar,
Things to do to create a multiprovider:
    1. Select your infoproviders
    2. Select the characteristics you need
    3. Select the identification criteria
    4. Select Dimensions and assign characteristics

  • Dimensions and creation of Demension ID

I have a lot of experience with OWB and today I noticed with the new Release 2 - that when you create multiple levels and hierarchies that the Dimension ID if a negative number - is this what others are seeing?
I also notice with the Surrogate Key I create for the Dim and it is populated but I do not use the SK Operator?

This is correct. OWB creates positive dimension keys for every member of the lowest level of your dimension and negative dimension keys for every level above the lowest level. Only the record with a positive dimension key are referenced in the cubes.

  • Understanding Dimension creation in Oracle 9i

    Hi all
I created using SQL*Plus command line (CREATE DIMENSION...) this one dimension (3 levels, 1 attribute on bottom level) based on a sample fact table.
From the fact table I retrieved 4 columns for: 3 level IDs and 1 attribute for the bottom level.
    Now my questions are:
    1. How can I view the dimension data content? I am not sure if this is possible as my understanding suggests that 9i only creates the metadata for a dimension and no data is contained within this object.
    2. The fact table contains multiple rows having the same bottom level ID. How do I know that this data will not get replicated in the Dimension? or is it that Oracle will exclude any duplicate rows when filling in the Dimension? I know it's the latter but need confirmation anyways.
    3. If and when the base fact table gets altered/modified/appended how is it possible to "re-load" the Dimension with new values? Or is it done automatically?
Please note that our current infrastructure is Oracle 9iR2 on a SOLARIS 9 platform.
    Cheers.

Si, I really appreciate you taking time out and answering this query of mine.
OK, so ideally I should have an actual physical Dimension table with additional descriptive columns for each level and then subsquently map the dimension metadata definition to that table. But comparatively, from a tangible performance perspective, what am I missing out on?*
In all probability going the "physical" way I'll end up using more disk space by integrating millions of unique SCs in the dimensional table. Moreover, I'll have to "merge" most recent new-ish SCNUMBER records (daily) into the physical table first before running any query on the fact MV table, which will definitely incur some amount of time. I do agree that having more descriptive attributes for each level will only help me segment my overall analysis better but that's not important at this time.
From a solely performance perspective am I doing the right thing by just defining meta-data? What else can I do to speed up analysis on this MV?
