Critique Please

Alrighty, I just uploaded my new site for my clients to visit.
I got it working in all the browsers I tested on (IE,FF,Opera,Chrome,Safari). But I don't have older browsers anymore (ie6) and wondered if any of you could take a look at my site and let me know if you see any problems with alignment, or other things.
Also, if you have other suggestions I would be glad to hear them.
The web address is jasonandersonwebdesign.com.
Thanks in advance!

A few minor coding errors you may want to fix.

SEO oh, ohs:
No <h1> <h2> or <h3> tags on your site. You've replaced heading tags with Div classes which is not a wise thing to do. Also, the company name  which should be prominently displayed in an <h1> tag on your home page doesn't appear until the footer.

You have no Meta Descriptions on your pages for SERPs to use.

Your coding style is flawed, and by using an XHTML doctype,
    you are being
trapped by it. For example, this error -
Error Line 89 column 23: document type does not allow element
    "li" here;
missing one of "ul", "ol", "menu", "dir" start-tag.
    <li class="page_item"><a
    href="

    to this snip of
    code -
    <li class="current_page_item"><a
    href="
    http://www.healthhokkaido.com">home</a>
    <li class="page_item"><a
    href="
    http://www.healthhokkaido.com/files/google_map.cfm">hospitals</a>
Notice that you have NOT terminated the <li> tags
    properly. XHTML is
catching this as an error, and telling you that you cannot
    have a <li>
inside a <li> tag, which is what your code appears to
    be saying.
In addition, you have a number of these errors -
Error Line 125 column 10: ID "suckertree1" already defined.
<ul id="suckertree1">which mean that you are using the
    same ID attributes
on more than one page element - that's not allowed. ID values
    MUST be
    unique on a page.
    And this line -
Error Line 172 column 86: end tag for "img" omitted, but
    OMITTAG NO was
    specified.
    ...b.jpg" alt="" width="50" height="50"><br>which
    means that you have an
XHTML doctype, but you are using HTML tag syntax -
    <img ...>
instead of the required XHTML syntax -
    <img ... />
    Also, you have this -
Error Line 177 column 18: an attribute value specification
    must be an
attribute value literal unless SHORTTAG YES is specified.
    <strong class=linkTitle>
which means that you have not properly enclosed your
    attribute values in
    quotes.
    And this -
Error Line 192 column 32: required attribute "action" not
    specified.
    <form id=wf_Testform method=post>which means that you
    have not specified the
required ACTION attribute for your form.
And, of course, the zillions of unspecified alt attributes on
    your
    images....
    See - like that....

  • Need Build Advice/Critique Please

This is my first post here so I'll start with a little info about myself and my video editing needs.  I'm an amateur when it comes to Adobe Premiere.  I used Vegas for a few videos.  I now have a subscription to the Creative Cloud, and have made a few videos in the past for work (taking 3D animations and splicing segments together, adding a couple logos, effects, etc. - nothing too fancy) as well as a couple for personal use.  My edits consist mostly of splicing video clips (from my Canon 60D DSLR), overlaying a music track, then sticking an intro at the beginning...  Nothing fancy.  I'd certainly like to do better and increase my skillset, create better intros, etc...
Aside from my 8-5, I run a successful home based leather holster business in my spare time.  But, making holsters is a TON of work, so...  early on, I made a few tutorial videos available via online rental (pay a few bucks, get viewing access for 24 hours).  They sold pretty well, but when I upgraded my website I couldn't get the rental system to work so I decided to make them freely avaialble on YouTube and try monetizing them with little success so far.  With my new videos, I might like to switch back to the rental system if I can make it work on my website.
My videos are generally just tutorials intended to teach people how to make leather holsters and other leather items - I guess you'd say I'm a YouTube'r, though I only have a handfull of videos out there currently (my current computer ran out of storage space and it's too old and slow to be of much use).  My family photo collection is around 100GB and growing (3 young kids).  I use Photoshop pretty heavily at work, and will use it at home, though less intensively (cleaning up pattern scans, editing photos, etc.).
To give you an idea of the type of videos I've made, and will likely continue to make (hopefully gradually better over time once I can afford better lighting, etc.), you can look here:
    http://www.adamsleatherworks.com/hows-it-made/
Anyway, I'm certainly no pro editor, and I don't have a ton of money to spend, so please take a look at this list and let me know what you think....
    Motherboard - ASRock X79 Extreme6 LGA 2011 - $220
    CPU - Intel Core i7-3820 Sandy Bridge-E 3.6GHz LGA 2011 - $230
    RAM - G.Skill Ripjaws X 16GB (4 x 4GB) 1600 - $100
    Drive C (OS & Programs) - OCZ Vertex 4 128GB SSD - $120
    Drive D (Media & Projects, Photos, Documents, etc.) - Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 2TB - $90
    Drive E (Page-file, Exports) - OCZ Vertex 4 128GB SSD - $120
    Drive F (Swap, Previews) - OCZ Vertex 4 128GB SSD - $120
Drive G (Backup of D drive) - debating on just using my WD Passport external drive for now (free, for now)
    Optical Drive - LG 14x SATA Blu-ray interal rewriter - $80
Case - Fractal Design Define R4 ATX Mid Tower - $125
    Power Supply - EVGA SuperNOVA NEX750G 750W 80 Plus Gold - $140
    CPU Cooler - Corsair Hydro H100 - $105
    Extra Fans (2) - Noctua NF-F12 PWM 120mm - $16.25 each
    Video Card - EVGA GeForce GTX 660 2GB - $220
    OS - Windows 8 Pro 64bit - $140
    Media Card Reader - Kingston FCR-HS3 15-in-1 USB 3.0 - $27
    Mouse/Keyboard - Logitech MK550 Wireless - $65
    Monitors (2) - 23" to 24" matching LCD screens @ 1920x1080 - $170 each
The total for that list is around $2,345, almost exclusively from www.newegg.com, with just a couple items from Amazon.  Please bear in mind it includes new monitors and a mouse/keyboard combo.  I want big monitors, but they don't have to be stellar performers.  Color accuracy (while desired) isn't critical.  I'm not a wedding photographer or anything like that...
I'm not sure if I need to be using RAID 1 on the D: drive - I'm pretty good about backing up my files to my WD Passport.  I don't know that I need RAID 0 for speed since I'm not doing a ton of editing, nor will my timelines have many layers to them.  I think RAID 10 is a little overkill for someone like me, but I'm open to input from others.
Lastly - I'm curious what the routine is for recovering space on your "D" drive once you've edited and ouput your videos.  I look at all these YouTube'ers that have hundreds of hour long videos and always wonder what kind of storage system they have in place - I ask, but they never answer!  I'm leaning towards archiving my current videos to blu-ray discs, then deleting them from my drives...?  Or should I store my "business" related videos on a dedicated drive, back it up via RAID 1, then migrate those to larger drives as time goes on and never actually delete/remove any of my videos?  I have little experience with RAID, so I'm not sure what the actual process is for migrating to larger drives.
Anyway, enough rambling, and I look forward to whatever help you folks can provide.
    Thanks,
    Eric Adams

I put some ideas on my web page at http://www.pacifier.com/~jtsmith/ADOBE.HTM
The "maximum" computer I list is similar to what you show... but I would suggest the full tower case I list, since it will be better for drive/cabling space and cooling
In case you want to expand in the future, consider 2x8Gig ram sticks

  • New Workstation - System and Storage Critique Please

Hi. I'm finalizing a new workstation config and would appreciate your advice.   Since I'm not a photo/video pro, this workstation will be used for multiple purposes:
Video Editing (CS3 now; CS5 when released)
Photo Editing (CS3 now; CS5 when released)
    Sotftware Development
Stock data processing (custom app, processing daily data)
Office and Personal Apps (Email, web browsing, personal finance)
Below is my system config.   I'd appreciate any feedback that you have on the config, especially the disk config with an eye towards getting decent performance for editing AVCHD (w/Premiere) and still images (w/PhotoShop).
To limit upfront expenses, I'm thinking software RAID 0 instead of hardware RAID.   A nightly (or more often) file backup would copy files to a Backup Drive.   A weekly backup would copy files over our network to a small server.   As projects becames stale, they would be copied to a removable archive disk (currently 500Gb).
    Some specific questions:
I understand that Hardware RAID is better than software RAID.   If I start with a software RAID now, will there be any issues with upgrading to a Hardware RAID (like an Areca ARC-1210)?
As you can see below, I'm thinking of moving the Paging File to a separate disk.  I'm thinking of a 150Gb Raptor or maybe an older 80Gb disk that I have laying around.   Does this disk have to be fast?
I've seen several comments about buying WD RE4 (WE2003FYYS) disks are better for RAID that WD Caviar Black.   Are the RE4 cost effective for amateur use?
    Thanks,
    Dan.

My suggestion is use another older computer for your non-video and non-photo apps.  That way you can minimize the processes on the video/photo machine and obtain maximum performance.on it and have maximum security and safety on your Internet/business machine.  If you want a common keyboard, mouse and video display get a KVM switch like I am using.  One of the biggest problems I see in analyzing the PPBM4 results that I get regularly is way to many processes/services running on machines people are trying to use as editing machines.

  • Before I tear it up and start again....critique please

Within the last few months I have built my first iWeb site and along the way have learnt an awful lot. First up was the incompatability with IE when viewing photo's and whilst I have tried to convince myself that everyone has a Mac the reality is that most people use a pc and IE.
I have also come to the conclusion that it may just be quicker to start again and re-size / adjust my pics in PS and save as Jpegs. In addition I also feel that I have learnt some invaluable tips by looking at some of your sites so before I start from scratch could I ask you for some feedback. The idea was to build a site where I could share some of my photo's with like minded individuals. I do get asked to shoot for a fee sometimes and would ultimately like to pursue this further.
Any C&C most welcome. Thank you

The only suggestion I would have for you in terms of
streamlining your site is to make gallery index pages
for your photo pages so that you can minimize the
number of links in your navigation menu. Since each
of these links has two separate images to render,
cutting down on the number of links may make your
site load faster and look less cluttered.
Here is one approach to making photo index pages...
    http://www.mac.com/web/en/Blog/013C4180-4787-4847-BAAB
    -319222AFC652.html
    organized into albums in iPhoto.
    Give it a shot.
This will give you one page where you can group
related photo albums together. There would be a
representative thumbnail for each individual photo
album. When this thumbnail is clicked then the
respective photo album page opens. The good thing is
that this can be done for you pretty much
automatically as long as you have your photos
    Hi James
You kindly provided the above link when I enquired about improvements to my site. I did not have the opportunity to make the changes at the time but when I came back to your reply I cannot get the link to work . Has it changed. Thanks for your help

  • Traffic Light CLD Critique please

Have at it. Go ahead be harsh. There may be some extra junk in the project I didn't clean up like some subVIs I ended up not using or elements in my cluster I didn't use, so feel free to ignore those

Yes you definitly missed some documentation points (maincluster.vi), the traffic lights on the FP (look at the context help), your typedefs.
Second your timer.vi and lightcluster indicators have no customized icons.
Third, you let the user close the window, but you don't handle the close event, that's bad.

  • My latest project. Critique please.

Here's my first real project in Photoshop, I'd like to know what y'all think of it, and what I need to work more on.I'd like to say thanks to 99jon, his help was great.

Nice job. I would agree with Peru Bob that the angle of Wonder Woman's shadow needs to be adjusted (rotated to the right a few degrees.) I would also shift the shadow more to the left so that it lines up better with her feet.
Also, a basic concept to remember about cast shadows is that they are at their most intense (darkest) nearest the object that is casting the shadow and gradually get lighter and softer the further away it gets from the object. In other words, if you soften the upper part of the shadow, e.g. with a soft eraser set at a low opacity, this will give it a more natural look. For example, look at the gas pump on the right. See how the shadow is darker closest to the pump and gradates to a lighter tone the further away it gets? Your Wonder Woman shadow does just the opposite and gets darker instead of lighter.

  • Site critique please

    http://web.mac.com/jimpsky/Secondtography/Home.html
Just a very quick look over and any brief improvement ideas would be appreciated muchly as always.
    love feedback.
    You guys ROOoock.
    p.s
The clientele for my site are Secondlife users.

    opinion/suggestion:
It's pretty good, could be better. The "you drink we drive" doesn't work here followed by "you dream it..." Something easy to "get" that really holds together and gets across what you're offering is what you need. Something like "you drink while we create it" would be better - just to make the point.
Once the viewer knows what you're up to (are you selling photos?) you're on your way. Everything following depends on what goes before. So get that going and then ask again even if you get good ideas between now and then.

  • Losing Image quality when saving to JPeg and posting on line! Please Help.

    Hi,
I recently got  a new computer. I use CS3 to edit.  For some reason, whenever I resize the image, save it as a Jpeg and post it to the web, it loses image quality.  Severely.  I've never had this problem before....until this new computer.
I usually resize the image to 800, then simply click on Save as Jpeg.   Once I resize, it looks fine CS3, but NOT online.
Just  a picture of my kid. No critiques please! : )

For blog software, you will have to look under Manage under your admin account. There's an option to define the maximum image size for previews (inline images) and medium image sizes. if they are set to samll, the software will resize them, yet the theme you use may scale them up again to full column width, so they look mooshy. Make sure the image size in the settings panel matches the images you upload. For Facebook it may be similar, but I won't rule out that eitehr of the two services frcibly will change your images to save bandwidth. This should be stated in their terms of use somewhere. If you're merely referring to color shifts, you may wish to check your default color settings and the Embed color profile and Preserve RGB options in the Save for web and Devices dialog.

  • Please critique my zfs-fuse setup - wiki to follow - help needed

    Hi all,
I am writing a new wiki for zfs-fuse that will hopefully find a niche and help others.
I am having a couple rough spots:
For example im trying to figure out why when i do a
    # zpool create pool /dev/sdb /dev/sdc /dev/sdd /dev/sde
with a 2TB, 750GB, 750GB, 500GB that the end file size comes out ~3.5TB instead of 4TB, and likewise when i create with a 2TB, 500GB, 500GB the drive size comes out ~2.68TB.......  Does the zpool automatically use the smallest drive as a cache drive or something? Or am i just that bad at 1024*1024*xxx
Another question i am having is what role does mdadm play if i created a linear span array,  on the zpool, would this still be considered zfs?
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Us … ementation
heres the wiki please critique it, comment on it, bash it, help it, anything.  Im sort of finished until i can have someone point out any lame mistakes in the way i created the partition tables, or used a zpool when i shouldnt be, if indeed the way i have done it with the bf00 filesystem type 'Solaris root' is indeed zfs.
Im looking for complete filesystem integrity for a backup drive array, thats all.  If its only a backup array, then without having minimum of 6 like sized hard drives i dont expect to have a nice raidZ1 setup with two separate vdevs that can take full advantage of the checksum file correction system that striped arrays offer yet, i just want to get teh zfs system up and running on one array until i get more hard drives.

So, that article you have there is like a draft you are planing to add as a regular arch wiki article?
If thats the case, then read the Help:Style article, it has the rules about how you should write wiki articles on the archwiki.
For instance, you are talking a lot on the first person, and giving personal comments. Like this:
    1) to get to step one on the ZFS-FUSE page https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ZFS_on_FUSE i had to do a few things. that was to install yaourt, which was not necessarily straight forward. I will be vague in these instructions since i have already completed these steps so they are coming from memory
That style of writing is more fitting for a blog than a wiki article. The style article mention:
Write objectively: do not include personal comments on articles, use discussion pages for this purpose. In general, do not write in first person.
    Check it here.
So, instead of saying things similar to this:
"I had to install blabla, I did it with yaourt like this: yaourt -S blabla, but you can download it manually from AUR, makepkg it, and then install it with pacman"
Is better if you say it like this:
"Install the package blabla from the AUR"
Of course, using the wiki conventions for making "Install" a link to pacman, "blabla" a link to the aur page of the package, and "AUR" a link to the aur wiki article.
Just read the article, and you will know how you should write it.

  • Critique my Setup - suggestions please!!!

Hi all. I'm new to this forum and hopefully some of you can help me. We have a photography business and recently bought a new custom built PC. It has the following specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo (Extreme Performance) Platform
    Asus P5KC Core 2 Quad/ Intel P35/ DDR3+DDR2/ CrossFire/ A&GbE/ ATX Motherboard
    Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q9300 2.5GHz 1333MHz 6MB LGA775 EM64T CPU, Retail
Antec Sonata III 500W Quiet Super Mini Tower Case (Piano Black)
    4GB (2x2GB) PC6400 DDR2 800 Dual Channel
    Samsung HD753LJ 750GB SATA2 7200rpm 32MB Hard Drive
    Lite-On LH-20A1H-185 LightScribe 20X DVD+/-RW Drive (Black), Bulk w/o Software...(2)
    1,44 3.5 Floppy INT Black
    EVGA nVidia GeForce 8600GT 512MB 2DVI/HDTV PCI-Express Video Card
    Integrated 8-Channel Audio Controller
10/100BASE-T On board Fast Ethernet LAN Controller (Build On Motheboard)
Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit, (1-Pack DVD), OEM
We also have a USB 2.0 Seagate external harddrive that we keep most of our photos stored on. We move them to the harddrive before working on them. We are using Photoshop CS3 adn would like to make the program as fast as possible. I have read that having a second hard drive dedicated as a scratch disk will help immensely. My question is this. What type of drive should I buy? Also, I have a Maxtor DiamondMax 21 200GB UDMA/100 7200RPM 8MB IDE Hard Drive I may be able to use as my scratch disk (not sure if connections will work with this motherboard though). Would I see any significant performance boost by using this IDE drive as my scratch disk or would I better better off sticking with my current internal hardrive stated above? I'm not against buying a good second hard drive but don't want to if this IDE drive will work. If a second drive is recommended, what do you guys recommend given my current setup?
I would like to setup the machine with Raid drives and all that, but I don't know enough about how to do that I don't think.
Any suggestions? Also, one last quick thing, I sometimes get the scratch disk full error and sometimes CS3 just crashes. It also is slow sometimes. Please help. Thanks everyone!!!!!!

Do you suggest anything else in addition to getting a Sata drive? How big a drive do I need?
As much as I would love to switch to vista 64, your talkign about a significant investment. I did however ask for a motherboard when my cpu was being built that can handle both vista 32 and 64...so I have that covered. However, I don't feel like shelling out a ton of $$$$ on PS 64, Lightroom 64, vista 64, and any other program that is currently 32 bit on my cpu. That seems like alot bigger investment than I'm ready to make. ALso, I doubt all the bugs are worked out of 64 bit software as of right now. I ordered a floppy disk drive just to have it as I find they don't scratch as easy as CD's...lol. Also, they are just big enough to hold important docs such as password lists and stuff.
Thanks again and I welcome any other suggestions from anyone else as I'm new to the technical/cpu aspect of photoshop. Thanks!

  • Request: Please Critique This iWeb Site

Hello all! I'm hoping you can take a few minutes and look at a site I've created in iWeb. It's about 80 percent complete, so you will see some issues such as missing text, pink text, a few missing pictures, etc. The entire "Give and Support" section is still being written.
I'd really appreciate feedback from this community because I've relied heavily upon you and this message board to build this site. Your past discussions have been awesome resources.

It's run by a great group of Franciscan friars and I'm trying to help them communicate with a larger audience. Most of the people who know about this great place are graduates of a nearby university. For more objective details, read The New York Times profile in the Mountain Media section.
    A few notes:
-- I use MassReplaceIt for a variety of tasks, including changing the link colors. However, within the last three weeks, that code has stopped replacing and I've been left with Apple's default colors. Can anyone help?
-- Plan to add comments to the blog section once I receive more blog entries and as we get closer to launch in the next few weeks. It appears that Haloscan is the best option?
-- The embedded Google Calendar works only sometimes on Safari. Works fine on my PC. Any ideas?
-- I can't seem to get the RSS feed for the blog to save properly in my RSS reader. It ends up titled as "MyBlog."
    Here's the site:
    http://www.mounti.com/Mount_Irenaeus/home.html
The URL will change when it goes live; everything is in a test folder right now. Pages will move the root address when live.
In addition to the questions above, what do you think of the overall presentation? Content? What other iWeb gems can be added? As total strangers, does this site help communicate what the place is about?
    Thanks again, all.

In your website, in order to protect your content, you have this notice: "Copyright 2007, Mount Irenaeus Franciscan Mountain Retreat". But in the two "Mountain Chronicle" videos it appears that you are using a copyrighted soundtrack by Ennio Morricone from the film "The Mission". ...I say "appears" because I don't know for sure - I suggest you determine what the music is and check whether you can legally use it.
For works created in circumstances of employment or works known as “works for hire” (as is Morricone's composition) the term of copyright is 95 years from the date the work was first published. ...If the copyright owner were to discover your use of his work, you would probably receive an attorney's "cease and desist" order.

  • New HDV system - Please Critique

Hello all, I've been lurking for a few days just sucking up all the fantastic info on this site. We are just about to pull the trigger on a new editing machine and would appreciate your opinions on the matter.
We will be working will approx. 5TB of HDV from a dozen canon xh a1's. Our current editing machine uses an adaptec 5085 with an 8bay external tower. Our editor would like the new system to be more "portable" (HA!), so the raid will be smaller and internal. You may question my choice of raid controller but I "think" it is the right thing to do for management, scalability, compatibility, and backup plan in case of controller failure.
    Build:
    COOLER MASTER COSMOS 1000
    ASUS Sabertooth X58
    Intel Core i7-930
    X2 Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 6GB (3 x 2GB)
    SPARKLE GeForce GTX 460
    (used $280) Adaptec RAID 5085
(routed back into case) SFF-8088 Infiniband to 4 SATA Cable
    (X4 R5) HITACHI 2TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5"
    (OS/programs) SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4 320GB 7200 RPM
    XIGMATEK Dark Knight
    LG Black 10X Blu-ray Burner
    CORSAIR CMPSU-850TX 850W
All the data will be sync'd on the old 8 bay R5 tower nightly.
So is this the best way to spend $2400? I'm already pushing the budget and keyboard, mouse and monitors are still needed.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
what spec is the memory, if you can i would go for min 3x4gb ddr3 1600mhz so you can upgrade to 24gb in the future.. Also 1000w for the PSU (coolermaster or Corsair), a GTX 470 (difference in warranty of brands) . and also consider the Noctua NH-14D or the new corsair H70 (tested both on my system).
Also consider the cosmos S as it has better cooling. (have one my self)
    good luck
    Baz

  • Please critique this workflow

I have a pile of miniDV tapes that I want to use as source material for various video projects.
To do this I plug in the camcorder, find the right tape, capture the entire tape and then edit in iMovie.
Now I have discovered OneStep iDVD so I'm thinking of adopting this workflow:
    1) Convert all my tapes to DVDs using OneStep iDVD.
    2) When I need the source material, I use Handbrake or DVDxDV to extract the entire DVD or portions of it.
    3) Import the resulting MGEG4 movie into iMovie.
Before I go ahead with this, I wanted to ask if anyone sees any problems with this workflow. Specifically, am I going to lose any quality as I do the conversions? Will the scene breaks be preserved?
    Thanks.

Personally, I think of DVDs as a final delivery format.
In other words, once a movie is on a DVD, that's it. I don't try to bring it back into iMovie. Sure, there are workarounds to do so. But there is a loss of quality so I avoid it.
How many tapes do you have? Can you log them on paper and use that to create a "paper edit" of you movie first to work out which tapes you'll need to import from.
Ultimately, there's no way around it. Video editing requires a great deal of disk space.
    Matt
