Crop makrs for professional printers

Hi,
I recently landed a job with someone who needs a designer. I always played around with photoshop and got quite good at it, but I never had to print what I made. I was told that I needed to make bleeds and crop makrs and deliver the design as a PDF to the printer.
I am a bit lost. The posters I designed are 8.5 by 11. I added on .25 inches to the lenght and width to allow for the bleed, then desinged the poster. I am lost however with what to do for the crop marks. Are they simply the Guide Lines? Those don't show up when I view the file as a PDF, and the image shows up as 8.75 by 11.25, and if that gets printed the image will shrink slightly to fit the page.
I know it's sort of an open-ended question, I apologize. But how do I go about makin crop marks and delivering those to the printers in PDF form.
I'm afraid that what I deliver will end up being printed with an unwanted white boarder, and there are over a thausand copies set to print. I really don't want to mess this up!
Thank you in advance for any advice.

Mr.Met
I think i have a simple way forexaple he is using photoshop lets say a Biz Card which stardard size 9x5 what i do in PS i will make the size 9.2x5.2, When the card is ready Place in Indesign draw a box of no stroke of 9x5 ofcourse the points will be the Bleed Centre that box with Align Pallete into the card then go to the windows in Cs4/Automation and In Cs 5 Utilities Script panel your can use VBS/Javascript Look up for Cropmarks Double Click when the drawn Box is Selected your Ready to Go.

  • Pages: PDFs for professional printers

I hope this may help Pages users who struggle with making PDFs for professional printshops.
Pages provide several options to produce PDFs. However, not all are suitable for professional print shops. For instance, 'Export to PDF' option under File menu will give you PDFs that look okay on screen, but will not break into four colours (CMYK) needed for professional printing.
One efficient way of preparing Pages files is by using the ColourSync utility.
    1. In your Pages document go File - Print. Print dialogue window opens.
    2. Click on the third pop-down menu bar. Go down to ColorSync.
    3. In ColorSync dialogue second pop-down menu bar is called 'Quartz Filter'. Click on it and go down to 'Add filters...' ColorSync launches and a Preview pdf of your document opens after a few seconds. In the top left corner of the Preview there is an icon with red, green and blue filters. Click on it.
    4. 'Filters' dialogue window opens. Click on the triangle next to the third option 'Create Generic PDFX-3 Document'. At the bottom of the window click on + to create a new filter which will be your configurations choice for producing PDFs for printers. 'Untitled' option appears at the bottom of the list.
    5. Double click on it to change the name of the option. Click on the little triangle to the right of the 'Untitled' and a choice of option opens. Go down to 'Add PDF retouch component' and when options open choose PDF/X-3.
    6. Click on the little triangle to the left of your 'Untitled' and you will see that a new 'Create PDF/X-3' submenu has been added.
    7. Click on the little triangle to the left and a choice of PDF settings appears. Now here, on the fourth line you have 'Destination Profile' drop-down menu. If you choose 'Generic CMYK' you can start producing PDFs already colour separated for professional printers. Next, go further down to 'Flatten Transparency'. By default it is checked and resolution is set at 72 dpi. That is good enough for the internet and for e-mailing pdfs. But for professional printing you need a much higher definition.
    8. Next step: click on your preview pdf, at the bottom left there is a choice of filters - a drop-down menu bar. Click on it and you will see your 'Untitled' at the bottom of the menu.
    9. Close Filters dialogue window, close preview, and go back to your Pages document. Click Print under File menu and in Print dialogue window go to ColorSync again. Click on the Quartz Filter menu bar and you will see that the 'Untitled' filter with your PDF settings sits there.
    10. Now, follow the Print - Save as PostScript - Create PDF route, but in a slightly modified way:
    - Open Print dialogue;
    - Choose ColorSync and set Quartz Filter to yours - e.g. 'Untitled'.
    - Under PDF menu choose 'Save as PostScript'
    - Launch Acrobat (or drag the PS file onto the Acrobat icon) and 'Create PDF from file' under Document menu or Open the PS file under File menu.
Changing PDF settings allows you to prepare ready CMYK converted files for printers. It may look cumbersome, but, mind, you only have to adjust your PDF settings once to find what best suits you, and then it's just sliding down to ColorSync and clicking on your settings.
FrankBe has described the use of ColoSync for preparing PDFs on this forum. I am adding here a recommendation to use the PostScript stage to convert Pages files to PDF. A fuller version of this method is on http://i-work-in-pages.blogspot.com.

  • File format for professional printing

(In case it's relevant I'm using CS2, but I think it probably doesn't matter.)
I have some logos that I'm publishing for people to use for a variety of purposes. I want to keep the number of file formats to as few as reasonably possible in order not to confuse everyone. My question is, what vector-based format should I use for professional printers?
I originally assumed that .ai would be too narrowly supported (for instance, I'm advised that Quark can't read .ai files) so I opted for .eps, thinking that this would be recognised by virtually every graphics program. However, I've since discovered that eps doesn't handle a critical graphical element as I'd thought it would:
For the sake of simplicity (rather than getting too involved in the actual logo design), imagine a white circle with a standard drop shadow outside it fading smoothly away the further you get from the circle's edge. This is supposed to sit on any coloured background, with the parts of the shadow gradient that aren't grey (if that makes sense) being transparent. The trouble is that, apparently, in Quark (and maybe other programs for all I know), this shaded area comes out with a white background. I've mocked up an approximate comparison - attached - of how it ought to look and how it actually comes out.
The upshot of all that is that, as far as I can tell, eps is not the right format. So I come back to my request: can anyone recommend a file format which Illustrator can produce that is:
    - vector-based
    - compatible with all common graphics programs
    - able to handle faded drop shadows correctly?
    Thanks,
    Giles.

CMYK is always preferred, as there's no such thing as a printer that uses RGB inks.  Switching color spaces can end badly.
Agreed for printing CMYK is preferred but, i gather that there are some digital printers that prefer RGB files... hence my caveat.
however rips with color precise elements that can hit things like PMS colors require vector art with embedded swatches.
Whatever the method, if you have a tiff file, you're safe. But, it's not flexible except for downscaling.
A pdf is generally preferred, as even if the sender forgets to convert the fonts, you can always open the file in Photoshop and have the file be read accurately.
Forget to convert fonts? In a tiff? What are you talking about?

  • HP Solution Center for 2 printers on Windows 7 64bit

I have an HP Windows7 professional 64 bit laptop with a hp photosmart c309g and a Photosmart 7520 e all in one for wireless printers on our home network. the c309g shows up in the HP Solution Center, but the 7520 does not, so we are unable to set up printer shortcuts for easier print or items as either one - sided or two-sided and for changing between regular letter printing to photos.
Is the 7520 able to be added to the HP Solution Center? How? Will we be able to have both in the Solution Center?

    Hi,
Have you installed its software and drivers yet ? If yes
Click Start > All Programs > HP > HP [your printer]
Properly installation you will have its icon on desktop.

  • Text for Professional Printing

I am preparing a newsletter that will be sent out for professional printing.  Will Adobe's "Open Face" fonts work or do I need to download post script fonts from somewhere.
    I appreciate your help.

Open Type Face fonts are cross-platform, they work on both Mac and PC. It's better to use these so that when your file changes hands to different platforms, then the font can be installed and used without hassle (in theory).
If you use File>export and choose PDF the fonts will be automatically embedded (depending if it's allowed in the EULA of the font, it usually is but some fonts don't allow it). The font embedded in the pdf is for viewing and printing purposes, unless the person on the other end has that font they can't change the text.
You should send the printers the version of the font that you used anyway, just to be sure. You can use File>Package to collect the fonts you've used. Compress this to a zip folder and send it along with the PDF or the files you're sending to the printer.
Be sure to include any fonts form EPS files too. As the font won't be embedded in EPS.
If you're sending a PDF talk to the printers about what the best settings are and how to proceed with making the pdf, including bleeds, colour profiles, etc.

  • HP, Win7, and Drivers for Older Printers Of Course

Running  Win7RC 32 Bit just for compatibility testing.  My parents have a 5650 and I have a 5850 at home in the Deskjet printer series that have been great printers.  Maybe some of HP's best compared to my 600, 700, and 800 series of years past My 5850 is using the 5600 family drivers in Vista 32 Bit and works good.  Win7RC is another story BUT it is still considered beta ware.  The vast majority of answers in this forum concerning printer drivers state that everyone should wait til October 22.  I am asking if there is any hope for us older printer owners in receiving compatiable drivers or should we start looking for new printers?  I would imagine that the HP engineers have an idea of what HP products they plan to support and which items will be obsolete.    Windows 7 has a lot of anxious people ready to move up from XP and especially Vista.  I myself would like to be ready for Win7 when my three pre-ordered copies arrive in October just as many people here would.  Would be a shame to load a new OS and not be able to print anything.

By the way, the HP 6MP Laser Jet in my office works with my Win7RC notebook.  It is being shared through a server running XP Pro SP3 and received the driver from the server.  The Win7RC notebook is also able to print to our HP P4014n Laser Jet network printer OK.  I have a 882C Desk Jet on our network running on another XP Pro SP3 PC, but I have not tried connecting to it yet.

  • How do I set the default print margins for ALL printers in mozilla.cfg

How do I set the default print margins for ALL printers in mozilla.cfg, even ones that are not yet installed / connected to the computer?
I'm trying to install firefox with MDT and apply certain print options, but the printers themselves are connected at a later stage so the print.printer_myprinterhere cannot be used.

Best answer I could find: [https://mike.kaply.com/2012/03/16/customizing-firefox-autoconfig-files/#comment-132668]
If you can figure out how to add the printer name, this can be used to lock the margins.

  • Adobe Acrobat 10.1.3 Mac OS does not inherit the Duplex setting from PPD for HP printers

Adobe Acrobat for the Mac OS does not inherit the setting from the PPD for the printer. Our current settings for the PPD has Duplex enabled as the default for the HP LJ 9050 and it works in all the application with the exception of Acrobat 10.1.3, Acrobat does not inherit this setting from the driver.  Our previous installation with Acrobat 10.1.0 duplex worked well with our PPD configuration where Acrobat inherits the setting from the PPD and duplex is default for all our black and white printers.
We found reference to the reserve issue with 10.1.2 in the forum but that solution is global for all printers and it only works with version 10.1.2
Does anyone know how to set the default printing settings in Acrobat version 10.1.3 to allow us to have duplex printing by default on the Mac.

    >It looks like a typical case of finger pointing, Adobe blames Epson, Epson blames Apple. Apple blames the user...
No, you still don't get it...Lightroom is a Cocoa app...it uses Cocoa printing APIs...therefore, print drivers will have to be rev'ed to support those Cocoa APIs...the 3800 (6.10) DOES...the earlier 3.5x drivers won't under Leopard.
What's the driver version of your R800? Something like 3.09? The odds are REAL GOOD (since Epson hasn't released an updated driver for that printer yet) that it's not been updated.
So, you are just gonna have to wait for Epson to rev the drivers, use Tiger instead of Leopard or print out of Photoshop CS3 (which is a Carbon app and uses the Carbon APIs) or not print.
You may not _LIKE IT_ but those are your options...

  • Apple 's new drivers for Canon printers

Apple has just released new drivers for Canon printers. I have an i9900 inkjet printer which is not listed in the supported printers. Will the driver work for me or am I out of luck?
    Thanks.

The driver update is supplied to Apple from Canon, who has made the decision to end support for the i9900. They actually ended support several versions previously.
So to print from Mavericks to the i9900 you can download and install Gutenprint v5.2.9 which lists the i9900 as a supported device.

  • Best Practices for Professional video editing

    Hi
I'd like to know your thoughts on what the most proffessional / effeciant method for editing are. At the moment, I archive all the footage from a DV tape through iMovie (I just find iMovie easier for doing this) save / archive all the imported segments of clips I need, name them, then import them into FCP
When I finish an edit I export and uncompressed Quicktime movie, then back up the entire project on an external drive
Is this good practise, Should I export the final edit to tape?
I've just started out as a video-maker as a paid proffession and I'd like to know the most 'by the book' methods
    THanks
    G5 Dual   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Sounds to me that you're doing a whole lot of extra steps using i-movie as your import. You're going to lose some of FCP best media features by not digitizing with FCP. Batch Capture in FCP isn't hard to learn.
I wouldn't say there's any "rulebook" for professional editors. We all work a little differently but here are some of my "best practices"
Always clearly name and label all of the tapes that you are using in a fashion that makes sense to you. When I cut a large project I may have multiple tapes. If I lose a piece of media accidentally, it's easier to go back and re-digitize if I have organized the project early in.
Clearly label bins and use them wisely. For example, on a small project I might have a "video" bin, a "music" bin and a "graphics" bin. This saves searching through one large bin.
On larger projects, I try to think ahead to how I will edit and make bins accordingly. For example I might have bins as follows, interviews, b-roll location a, b-roll location b and so on. Then I'll have music bins, animation bins and still graphic bins. I generally try to save all to one hard drive which saves me looking through three or four drives. This isn't always possible depending upon the size of the project.
As for back-up. Lots of peope buy harddrives for each project and then store them until they need them next. Of course, keep all of your raw-footage and you can always re-digitize.
When I'm done with a project I save the completed project to tape...this is for dubs and library. I save the FCP information on a DVD and I burn the media from the drive, because I can't afford multiple hard drives. I would rather re-digitize my raw if I need to re-do the project in the future.
That's how I do it, but other editors have other methods. I would highly suggest digitizing in FCP and not i-movie, but that's entirely up to you. You're not doing anything "wrong."

I am currently using Firefox for my work at home job but I am also taking online classes and my school recommends Firefox as their supported browser. My Job recommends using a separate browsers for personal needs. My question is could I download lets say Firefox 22 and use that for professional purpose and download Firefox 21 and use that for completing my school work.

You can only open the Profile Manager if all Firefox instances are closed.
You can install multiple Firefox versions via a custom install in different installation folders and only use the older Firefox version when you really need it.<br />
Do a custom install and install each version in its own program folder to use multiple Firefox versions.
