Cryptic language

When mac os X jumps up to ask for my name and password, for example when deleting a system prefs panel the same character jumps up instead of all the others, looks like a "A" with a box around it.
Anyone seen anything like this?

Think it is the "AG Old Face" font thats acting up. Had some issues with it when this problem started.

Hello,I have an issue that only happens to a handful users. When they view a crystal report online via the ActiveX viewer the text displays in a cryptic type language. It doesn't appear to be a specific language that I can tell. It also prints in the same cryptic language as well. I had them uninstall the viewer and reinstall it, which did not work. The one user that has the issue is running Windows XP SP2, and running IE 6, the same as my machine, but mine works. Has anyone else had this type of issue? Any ideas as to what could be causing it?Thanks,Vance

Automator Workflow Fails with Cryptic Error Message

I'm updating an Automator workflow for OS X Lion that I initally developed and used, without issue, in OS X Tiger. The workflow asks for a name, creates a folder for the name, takes a digital image with a Nikon D50 connected to the computer, and saves the image to the new folder. This aspect of the workflow works fine.
I then have a prompt asking if we should take another. If the user says "yes," the script should take another image and save it to the folder. This is where I run into an issue. When I attempt to add another "Take a Picture Action" into the workflow, I get the cryptic (at least to me) error message in the attached screenshot.
Here's the text:
"Cannot update for observer <AMWorkflow 0x400458ac0> for the key path "parameters.name" from <TakePicture 0x403e3b0a0>, most likely because the value for the key "parameters" has changed without an appropriate KVO notification being sent. Check the KVO-compliance of the TakePicture class."
The language of this error would seem to indicate a bug. Any thoughts on a fix or the means to report to Apple?

The subject of this post is a bit misleading. The workflow wasn't failing while I was running it, but rather when I was editing it and trying to include another 'Take a Picture' action in the same workflow.
The workaround I found was to use a 'Loop' action on the 'Take a Picture' action. It's a bit more elegant and doesn't require multiple 'Take a Picture' actions in the same workflow.
Nonetheless, what does this error message mean?

The cryptic error - element cannot be found in a collection ?

I have encountered this error in the script task a few times. The causes are - Variable is present in code, but not added to task list OR, you try to create a DataColumn with the wrong column name, OR the variable in the task list has been deleted.
When you make such mistakes, you get the cryptic error -
Error: System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.

How do I guess the EXACT source of the problem from this cryptic error message ?
I am sure that I am a beginner compared to the developers who made SSIS. But, what amazes me is that they could not even show which element was missing ? As a result, the developer has to look at all the variables in his code and see if they are in the list.
Is this error so cryptic in even SSIS 2012 ? This should not have been too hard for the highly paid programmers to figure out.

The thing is the variables are stored as an array or to be precise a collection so the variable name is the key and as you might have noticed in other programming languages that the values are not displayed in the error or the stack trace so according to
the base engine the variable name is just a string value and nothing more so it will throw the error
"The element cannot be found in a collection"
instead of showing which which variable.

It is getting hard to find that information that can be posted here (terms of use, etc.). I did find this link, KB17215, which describes where to find the loader.exe file. There is this thread, 228990, the first post of which contains what I think you need. Note also message 24 of that thread. It contains an important step that you will need to insert between steps 1 and 2 of the first message.

I listen to some Thai songs writen in Thai language. in iTunes the characters are shown properly. but as soon as I load it on my mini, it´s just some cryptic signs.
does anyone of u have an idea how I could install Thai language on my mini?

How can a structured frame be used for translating books to foreign languages?

I keep reading about how a structured approach can improve the translation process (from english to foreign languages), however, i can't seem to find specifics about a particular method or tutorials about how to go about it (specifically). My question is, how (specifically) can structured framemaker be used for translation from english to foreign languages? Links to tutorials on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

A well organized XML based project will definitely save translation costs. There are many advantages to the XML approach to translation management including:
Almost zero DTP rework costs - make the EDD/Template do all of the work!
Translation is application version independent - no need to wait for the Translation Memory/CMS system vendor to support the latest version of FrameMaker.

And I have consulted/supported a lot of customers after those consultants left the stage. I always hear more or less the same from all of those clients. No question, I hear a lot of arguments for working with XML in tech doc, most of the arguments you mention included. Most of the tech writers are happy with the new structured FrameMaker and enjoy writing. And, cross your heart: Finally there's no alternative to XML in the long term if you take your tech writer job seriously. No question – working with pure XML in a professional information architecture in a structured, guiding editing environment like FrameMaker is cool, fun, faster and produces more open, more accessible, more reusable, more reliable, more consistent, in a nutshell: more valuable data.
But what I have never ever heard, and I'm talking about several hundred companies, is: We save more money on translation now. You might imagine that this is surprising me since many years. This is why I always ask: Did you save any costs in your translation projects? Surprisingly the answer is always: No. Actually some – no, wait: many – tell me, that their translation agency even charges more now, because they have a lot of new costs:
Costs, to customize their translation memory system to the clients custom xml,
costs to follow badly or not documented changes in the client's xml structure (DTD/Schema changes) in the TMS,
costs because of more engineering work like
valididating xml in advance,
fixing invalid xml exports,
fixing invalid translations due to – sometimes massively – increased amount of tag errors because of tagging differences of "old" (legacy mif) and "new" (xml) tags,
dealing with just too big XML files that need to be carefully split, so that the TMS has a chance to read it, or alternatively:
"glue" the ten-thousand xml "snippets" to more handy chunks,
project managers and translators that need to do additional checks, validations, verifyings - and often not knowing what to do with those cryptic error messages, meaning additional support costs
Of course, many if no all of these and many other problems I did not mention here can be solved. And many are not exactly system immanent problems but communication problems (like introducing or renaming elements/attributes but not documenting this and not communicating this to the translation service provider) or would apply to any system change (e.g. also when switching from Word to Frame). However, I do not know of any single translation company on this planet (and I know virtually thousands of them from countries all over the world) that reduced the price per word for just a single pence, just because the client switched over from Word/Quark/FrameMaker/InDesign/Whatever to XML.
Just ask your translation service provider: Will you charge me less per word if I send you XML instead of MIF? I would really be surprised to hear a "yes". And frankly, if you have ever compared a professional FrameMaker document with the same document in xml format in a professional system like Trados: There is actually no difference that would justify any price difference. The text is the same, the amount of words identical, the number of tags is identical, it even looks identical in the translation system (I can post screenshots if you like). From the translation perspective there is no single reason why a translator should charge a single pence less.
So, it's a modern myth, that switching to xml reduces translation costs. That might be true, if you come from a really medieval documentation szenario with MS Word or the like, with manual formatting without any styles and so on (I see tech docs every day where even the TOC is typed in manually!!!) and swith from there to a modern structured xml authoring in combination with other supporting tools like authoring memory / authoring assistance, controlled language, translation memory and terminology managent and control, snippet based content management and so on. That will increase the consistency and quality of your data, which will reduce translation costs in the long term. But the truth is: This has nothing to do with XML per se, but with professional writing and professional management.
So, what's left in the money saving story? No more DTP in the target languages? I always hear, that with XML and FrameMaker you do not have to "format" the translated document. The truth is: If you have a professionally formatted (unstructured) document, you don't have to take care of it, too. Modern tools like Trados keep 100% of the formatting 100% correct in the translated document. If the underlying template is intelligent enough to take account of text amount changes due to longer translations, and if you don't have too many local formatting overrides, the DTP is actually zero and can be reduced to a few mintes/hours for "flying" of the document to check out for unexpeted problems wich can occure in both structured and unstructured documents.
Just to give some numbers on this: We are processing every day technical documentations for a quite big company. A typical documentation from them is about 250 pages in unstructured FrameMaker 9 (source language is English). Until now they were resistent to all my XML pushing. The Documentation is based on a straight, simple template (with our help "reduced to the max") and there are no formatting overrides (a script automatically checks this). The post translation Quality Assurance effort is - depending on the target language - usually something between 1 to 4 hours – that's a few seconds per page for the languages where already a lot of past Quality Assurance Steps went back into the Translation Memories and up to a minute per page for more "problematic" languages).
So, again: XML will not save you a single pence on translations. But it might help you to produce more open, more accessible, more reusable, more reliable, more consistent, in a nutshell: more valuable data. But if you already have properly set up (ustructured) FrameMaker Documents and already work with a professional translation memory system, you will be quite disappointed to learn, that the impressive money saving promises you recently saw on that great PowerPoint slides melt down to a few bucks over a couple of years.

FormCalc script language for calculating PV

Greetings,
I need to calculate a Present Value (PV) in a table for rent. I can not (after many, many tries) come up with the formcalc script language that mirrors the Excel formula my boss has used in a spreadsheet.
I know the 'formula' is PV(n1, n2, n3), but that is apparently NOT what needs to be written as the script. Do I use ".rawValue" in writing this out? Do I use the ctrl+applicable cell in choosing a segment?
My first example of needing to calculate this is having a total amount for a year's rent, a discount rate of [user entered, example would be 5%], and a period of the term year minus 1 (so year 1 would be 0 or not used; year 2 would be 1, year 3 would be 2). This is what the Excel formula relates to, although it uses a negative (minus) in front of the year's rent amount.
Writing PV(yramount, discountrate, yr-1) doesn't do anything to create the answer.
Do I write ... $.rawValue = PV(yramount.rawValue, discountrate.rawValue, yr-1.rawValue) or ....
I can't figure it out (and I've tried this formula every way I can imagine and I'm getting nowhere).
I am also going to be calculating the Present Value of Total Lease Obligations each year (which is another oddity of discountrate, yr-1, negative TotalLeaseobligation).
Once I get 'row 1' calculating, the following rows will be added based on the number of term years, and the calculating will include percentage increases over the prior year along the way. I can't wait :-O
If someone could please help me crack the "actually USING in a form the formula for Present Value)", I will be so very grateful. It is decidedly beyond my sub-novice attempts.

Oh, my, thank you so much! It is truly baffling to me. I’ve attached my efforts for what it’s worth. I try to explain more below.
I was basing my ‘assumption’ on this ‘formcalc information’ – but obviously I couldn’t do anything with it as it is too cryptic for a beginner.
Here is the Excel formula used in the current spreadsheet:
= PV($B$22,B$26,,-C28
Where B22 is the Discount rate (e.g. 5%)
B26 is a number representing the year number of the prior year in the Term (e.g., the first year pulls a blank cell, the 2nd year pulls “1”, the 3rd year pulls “2”)
C28 is the Base Rent amount for the year being calculated, but shown as a negative (?) [That number is calculated as a $/square foot * number of square feet]
In my LCD form, I’m calculating in a table in which there is a header row, a footer row, currently 2 body rows, and I’m trying to get all the values to calculate based on information “provided above” in the form. The first challenge is the first row and I’ve gotten everything to ‘work’ except the “Total Base Rent(PV)” and the “Total Lease Obligation(PV)” the 3rd PV value is an arithmetic calculation between these results.
Current Row 1 formulas:

AND my NEXT challenges: I am trying to make this a ?repeating row table? And will attempt to add an 'add row' button that will allow the addition of a row reflecting the number of years in the proposed term (from 1-10, usually). So I need the amount to sum in the footer as well as the couple of sums within each row. Starting with the 2nd year, the Base Rent and Operating Expenses amounts will be a factor of the prior year's amount * the applicable Escalation % (Base Rent Escalation or Estimated Annual Expenses Escalation) -- which is why I figured I had to go on and include the 2nd row to put those formulas therein. I am ASSUMING that when I enerate subsequent rows with the "Add Row" button (crossing fingers!) that the formulas will duplicate and the correct amounts will be reflected, including the right totals -- although for a 1-year term I'll need to figure out how to 'delete row' the 2nd row so the totals aren't ka-flooey.
I am extremely grateful for your help in any way you can share. This is a lot of fun -- but I just don't speak the LCD language yet. Thus I flounder.

Partner Application written in other language than PL/SQL and Java

I have an application written in another language than PL/SQL or Java. I want to integrate this application as an Partner apps where I use the same user repository as Portal.
Can I integrate the application by calling a stored PL/SQL-procedure based on the PLSQL SSO APIs examples that authenticates the user based on the username/password in portal and redirects the user to the application ?
Are there any examples / references where this has been done ?

The application Acrobat provides no language translation capability.
If you localize the language for OS, MS Office applications, Acrobat, etc to the desired language try again.
Alternative: transfer a copy of content into a web based translation service (Bing or Google provides a free service).
Transfer the output into a word processing program that is localized to the appropriate language.
Do cleanup.

have recently applied japan NLS on r121.1 and later upgraded to 12.1.3 also applied 9239090(japan as well).
But customer has complained the error below.
Any ideas on it .
Forms Application is still English.

But it does somehow my English security answers do not work on a Japanese Question especialy if I did not choose that question I set up the multiple choice In English and wrote the answers in English or Roman and set them langauge preferences in English, do you really think you can correctly write english name or word in Japanese they write a police patrol car pato caa パトカア　they do not have r and l .So it is my choice to make my security easy for me and as difficult for others to hack.But they also have patororoo choo meaning ' now patrolling ' so why they have pato caa patrol car and patoro patrol and have thousands of Chinese words kanji they can find patrol.

Brand New MacB Air and i haven't been able to get passed the format which has had to be done twice because, I have a French Numeric Keyboard and Language in English. The minute I type in my password, the keyboard gives me letters that i did NOT type.

I live in Switzerland and can only buy a Mac Air with a French or German keyboard, no chance to buy an English keyboard Mac here,. When setting up I chose the French numerique keyboard, although there are two choices French or French numerique. I put in my language as English. When all was set up I came to the start page and had to put in my password, by the grace of g....I just happened to see the first letter I typed before it turned into a dot. My password which was supposed to start with the number 2 showed a french e with accent before it quikly became a dot.
Because of the dot system, this meant that I had no clue what the keyboard was typing as my password ...........and true enough my password was not accepted despite my trying all combinations. I have had to reformat twice now thanks to Apple Chat and both times my password was not accepted. I am in the process of formatting it again, this time on my own. If the Start page does not accept my password again this can only mean that the Mac left the factory with faults. I could not be more disappointed with the money spent and the time and trouble that Apple Chat and I have spent in trying to correct a brand new out of the box Mac. I have a cheap Toshiba laptop also with a french keyboard and english language which gave me no trouble at all. I am not impressed with the so called King of computers! First of all the dot system is daft. People want to be able to see and confirm their passwords before they are set for good. Second, this problem is going to give me a lot of grief. Switzerland business is not renowned for its after sales service or the time it takes to do repairs. When I had an issue with my Vaio laptop which was still under warranty, they kindly picked it up from my house, repaired and promptly returned it. How's that for good proper service.

i didn't read a lot of your 2nd paragraph, but it seems like the password is the issue, right?
do a true clean install
reboot your machine and hold down command+option+r, you should see a spinning globe - if you don't see the globe or anything that reads internet recovery, shut down and try again
at menu, chose disk utility and once there, find your HD on the left side, select the physical name and erase it as mac journaled
exit disk utlity
at menu, choose install OSX
this time, when it asks for a password just hit continue, it will let you complete without a password
you should be able to get into your laptop, now figure out what password you'll be able to use with your kb issue

BIP Report in Siebel mobile is not working in languages other than English

We have upgraded our Siebel from 7.8 to Siebel 8.1 and in that we have moved from Actuate to BIP Reports. We have created a customized report in which we have put in the Filters on '.rtf' file to show a particular set of data. This report is deployed for 3 languages : English (ENU), Portuguese (PTB) and Spanish (ESN).After deploying this report, on Web application, it is working fine for all the languages but we are facing an issue on mobile client, the report is only working fine in ENU but for other languages(PTB & ESN) it is failing (means the filter which we put on '.rtf' is not working on other languages).
Is anybody face this issue and what will be the solution for this?

I think you need to first translate the smartform into other languages. Before translation, it wont work.
Steps for translation:
1. goto Transaction SE63
2. in R3 Enterprise select form menu
Translation - ABAP Objects - Other long texts
3. select FS - SSF-Smart Form
4. Object Name: choose your smart form
5. select target language
6. press edit

this contradicts the basic principle of consistancy.
