CS2 - A Great PR Opportunity

I've been a long-time fan of Adobe, although it wasn't always this way. As a Macromedia Studio user, I definitely had some reservations when Adobe first acquired Macromedia.
Luckily my fears proved largely unfounded, and you guys had well and truly won me over by the time CS3 came out.
I upgraded to CS3 and have never regretted it - still use it routinely to this day.
Unfortunately there are people who don't feel this way.
People who may feel Adobe software is too expensive (which even as a fan a sentiment I still share to an extent - there's a reason it's literally YEARS between upgrades for me), or 'over-hyped', or whatever the case may be.
The inadvertant 'mess up' that has occurred with CS2 today has the potential to change all that.
From reading the other threads on the topic, it seems it was never your original intention to release CS2 'free to all' (even though we're still waiting for an 'Official Announcement' from your exec team - so far there have only been individual members of staff making a few comments in this forum), contrary to the initial stories running in most of the world's tech press (some of which have been 'corrected' now, but many of which still carry the original 'error' that CS2 is now free).
However, ADOBE EXECUTIVES I URGE YOU TO RECONSIDER your ORIGINAL intention !!! This could be a great 'PR Opportunity' to change the minds of many of your naysayers who haven't been 'converted' like I was way back in 2007. CS2 is over 7 years old - you can't seriously be making any revenue worth speaking of from this anymore.
Part of the reason *I* became a convert was because of the fantastic upgrade pricing you offered with the release of CS3 (not sure if the upgrades have been quiet as generous in any subsequent release) - and the only thing better than cheap upgrades is free software.
CS2 as I said is over 7 years old, but that doesn't mean it doesn't contain useful software. By releasing it free, you have the potential to massively increase your user base for future versions. If people have the ability to use the older CS2 versions, far from 'sticking' with them and not upgrading, you'll find they will inevitably want to get the more recent versions with the added features. So by releasing it free, you could actually increase your user base for future versions as people who might otherwise never bother to download a trial of the 'current crop' decide to give CS2 a spin because it's 'free' and they're not tied into to making a purchase when the 'trial expires'.
Release CS2 free, and perversely you will drive more people to pay for CS6, CS7 and beyond !
And finally - what a great 'gesture' it would be if you turned around and officially stated, 'OK, it wasn't our intention and it was a mistake originally - but what the heck world, have our 7 year old suite for free. See what you can do with our old tools, then come back and see how much MORE you can do with the new versions. Keep the old ones as long as you like, they've got us where we are today and we're proud of them".
You just cannot 'artificially' generate the MASSIVE goodwill that would cause.
Goodwill as we all know is an 'intangible asset' - so it makes perfect sense.
I hope at least one of the Adobe exec team reads this

Dear Adobe Staff & Community Admin,
While you may have intended this for only customers who had purchased this before... removing the license check and replacing with a version using a fixed serial number in the HTML fully available - without login - I really wonder how this can legally be enforced at this point.  Sure, you could shut down the serial with a patch, but the versions are far beyond their SDLC and probably would cost far more to do that than it is now worth.
For example: After the info was passed on to me by another I downloaded it and installed it.  No notice on the link I was given or the page that this required previous purchase or license... just download links and serials.  Not even randomized - fixed in HTML.  Whoever did this must have had approval to do so - you guys are a HUGE corporation!  Now what - we now all have to uninstall or face legal action?  Logistically how could you even prove the difference of someone who has the CD in a box and wanted a digital download copy or a person thinking they just got something awesome from you guys?  What about for us "measly" folks that only need a few things for which CS2 will still go above and beyond our needs?
Respectfully I hope that you guys review what's going on and come out with a public statement... and soon.  Not a forum response, a press release - something that will be seen by more than just people lurking the forums.  What is the story with CS2?  Are you going to enforce the threat that Don said and now put thousands or more at risk of legal action?  PR wise that would be a nightmare... just letting CS2 go at this point not only looks good for you but will probably generate even more interest by users where you may end up with new sales of current products after people get familiar with this one!  Why let this be a lose-lose when it could be a great win-win for both the public and Adobe - and generate great buzz for you in 2013?

Note: I myself will remove this if it's no longer - and clearly expressed - as a violation of the EULA to run this copy without proof of previous purchase... but I really again wonder how you can enforce that even with me.  For example, if a user bought it, lost the CD and now thinks they can get it again - how can you verify that person is legit or not?

  • Networking with Photoshop CS2

    I recently acquired a second Mac G5 so that two people could edit raw files at the same time. I have the two Mac G5s networked together via a gigabit ethernet network. I have registered copies of Photoshop CS 2 and Bridge installed on both machines. One is my main computer and is faster and has all of my image files on its internal hard drives. I want to have an assistant use the Bridge on the second computer to view and edit raw files on the main computer.
    I can get Bridge to view and rank and adjust raw files, but when I open a file in Photoshop and try to save it over the network I get an OS X message that says the file is locked. It's odd to get a file locked message for a file I am saving for the first time. At first I thought this was an OS X disk permissions issue, but in the Finder I am able to copy and delete files without any problems.
    Researching the issue further, I discovered that for Macintosh Photoshop CS2 Adobe does not recommend opening and saving files over a network. Instead, they recommend copying the files from computer A to computer B so that all saves are to local drives. They recommend the use of Version Cue, but I understand that Version Cue does not work well with OS 10.4.

    I find this inability to have a second computer open and save over a network to be a real hindrance in having a central organized file structure for all current jobs.
    Other than copying from one computer to another and copying back, does anyone have a real world alternative?

    I can see the advantages of Bridge. And Photoshop CS2 is great.
    Since these are both Adobe products, and they're causing trouble, AND you paid good money for them...I'd toss it back at Adobe and see if they offer support for their Fine Products.
    It sounds that Bridge is somehow locking the network directory that you're trying to save your picture into. Copy/Deleting files via Finder is going to be somehow different than two Adobe products fighting for dominance and version tracking.

  • Installed Premiere Pro CS4 but video display does not work?

    I just got my copy of CS$. After installing Premiere I found two things that seem very wrong:
    1) video display does not work, not even the little playback viewer next to improted film clips located on the project / sequence window. Audio works fine.
    2) the UI is way too slow for my big beefy system.
    My pc is a dual boot Vista-32 and XP system with 4GB of memory installed and nvidia geforce 280 graphics board with plenty of GPU power. The CS4 is installed on the Vista-32 partition. My windows XP partition on the same PC with Premiere CS2 works great and real fast.
    Any ideas how to solve this CS4 install issue?

    I would like to thank Dan, Hunt, and Haram:
    The problem is now very clear to me. The problem only shows up with video footage imported into PP CS4 encoded with "MS Video 1" codec. So this seems to be a bug. The codec is very clearly called out and supported within various menues but video with this codec just will not play in any monitor or preview window. In addition the entire product looks horrible with respect to performance while PP CS4 trys its best to play the video. Audio will start playing after about 30 seconds. And once in awhile part of video shows up at the wrong magnification before blanking out again.
    My suggestion to the Adobe team: fix the bug and add some sample footage to the next release so new installations can test their systems with known footage.

  • CS4 ILLUSTRATOR TAKES FOREVER TO OPEN

    When I open even the smallest file it takes 30+ sec to open it.  When I open AI up for the first time with a file it takes even longer?  CS3 opens faster then my CS4??? This does not happen ALL the time but about 80% of the time so it is a hassle not to mention a time consumer.

  • Portal Integration with Product Orenge ?

    Hello !
    We Have a cust. who is interested in using iDS and
    iAS. They are trying to build up some Authoring-
    Software.
    For intelligent search in there data content they are
    using a third party product called "Orenge".
    I suggested to use Oracle Text option, which is available
    with the RDBMS, but cust. insists to use his product.
    (Don't ask me why )
    With this tool they are able to connect to the database
    and do searches. To make this web-enabled, they are building
    up a JSP to use this 3rd party product.
    How to integrate this ?
    1) Simply get the url of the servlet and display it in
    Portal.
    2) Include this product as an external application.
    But these are only very basic integration methods.
    Has anyone out there heard about this product called
    "Orenge" ?
    Does anyone know if there are plans for
    a further integration into Portal, for example as
    a portlet ?
    This would bring a great selling opportunity for us with a
    great institute in Germany.

  • [SOLVED]Establishing internet connection (using Virtual Box)

    Hi there,
    Recently I tried to install Arch, but I got a problem with the internet connection. During the installing process there were no problems - I had internet right away without any configuration (so I skipped that part in the "Establish internet connection"-part on the Beginners' Guide.)
    After the first reboot however I had no internet connection and
    ping -c 1 google.com
    gave me
    ping: unknown host google.com
    , so I went back to the Beginners' Guide and then tried out
    ip link
    which gave me two entrys, the second beeing:
    2: eth0: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state DOWN mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000
    link/ether 08:00:27:77:ab:fb brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
    Because this connection was down I tried
    ip link set eth0 up
    , but it didn't change anything at the output of
    ip link
    (still DOWN).
    Can someone see from this information where the problem is?

    -I have a wired connection to a wireless accespoint
    -Arch Linux is running in VirtualBox

    If that didn't do it, then it is definitely something that you can/should seek help for here on the forum.  If you simply don't have the time/energy right now to learn a bit more, then you can certainly come back to arch another time.  But if you have just a little bit of time and a little bit of energy, this seems like a *great* learning opportunity.
    The forums are here to help - don't take the abrupt points to the wiki as a sign we wouldn't help, we just want to make sure you read up on the basics first, then if that fails (which it now has with the dhcpcd command) then we can dig deeper.  But in the end it's up to you if you want to push forward now or not.  I'm confident we could solve this issue relatively quickly, as long as your on board with pushing forward.

    In CRM, we can maintain different address types for an account. But those address types don't seem to replicate into ECC in the SD customer.

    I checked the BUPA_MAIN Business Document and found that there are some structures which are used to transfer Address Related information. But, in the documentation no special mention about any customization has been referenced. And also the Address Data is part of the BAS - Business Address Services component which handles the data transfer by this was

  • "Answered" ends the discussion??

    So once the questioner tries a quickie or one-off answer and says "yeah, that worked", end of discussion? Boo! Allowing others to continue proposing alternate solutions or disccusing the original one is often a great learning opportunity for both the original poster and bystanders.
    Edit: er, nevermind...for some reason none of the "reply" links were appearing. They're back now (including on "answered" topics).

    I love the idea of being able to flag specific messages as Helped. I would go so far as to say "let's let people other than the asker do that". If the goal is to make a question/answer discussion now be useful to future users who may encounter the problem, let third-parties participate. That way as we accumulate "similar" questions that have different solutions, or several specific solutions but one more general one, solutions of varying quality, the "better" solutions could be ranked higher in a search. Um wait, isn't that the system Apple just scrapped here?
    I dislike the arbitrary limit on how many posts can be marked Helped. A complex problem may take more than two critical contributions. Or a trivial problem may also, if it's a single symptom but a newbie who needs lots of help getting it solved (or it's a symptom of a combination of actual "problems").
    Solved/Answered is fine if questioners use it and someone happens to have a common problem, but I'm not sure I see a greater good here. If a user searches and finds that his question has not been asked at all, he asks it. If a user searches and finds that his question has been asked but no Answered marks, then what? Is he to say "aw ****, nobody knew then, I'll not bother asking?" Is he supposed to ask anway and hope that maybe this time someone will know and bother answering? Or is he supposed to read the non-Answered topics and see if there's enough useful info there to solve it? Or is he supposed to watch that topic that was posted yesterday with an ongoing diagnosis discussion? Seems like Solved/Answered would be good to accumulate somewhere or consider for FAQs or other persistent topics.
    Given how many people post FAQs anyway ("What does 'we are using special permissions' mean?" "My Nano is scratched!" "How do I install X11 on Tiger?") why are we going through all this effort to set up a searchable system that people probably won't search?

  • AI CS6, ScriptUI, and images with transparency

    ESTK for AI CS6 is already known to create problems (e.g. http://forums.adobe.com/message/4711851).
    It’s possible that, in dialogs created with ScriptUI, AI CS6 also fails to display images with transparency properly. On my (Mac) system at least, such images appear with an aliased edge.
    If this is true it’s doubly unfortunate, since with CS6 Adobe chose to make AI’s background interface colour adjustable—which makes interface images with transparency something of a requirement.
    One workaround, which sadly negates the whole business of variable interface background colour, is to create dialog images with a background colour instead of transparency, and then force the dialog to display with the same background colour. For this technique we’re indebted again to Peter Kahrel’s invaluable ScriptUI for Dummies (www.kahrel.plus.com/indesign/scriptui.html). Page 69 of that publication shows how to do this—for example:
    win.graphics.backgroundColor = win.graphics.newBrush(win.graphics.BrushType.SOLID_COLOR,[0.5,0.5,0.75]);
    The process is, to say the least, quirky: and, as Peter mentions, poorly documented by Adobe. But I hope it may be helpful to others trying to use ScriptUI.
    The more I see of AI CS6 the more I like CS4! Can anyone tell me if I’m likely to miss any features or run into problems if I develop scripts for CS6 using ESTK for CS4?

    Yes this is where things can quickly become very complex too… I for the most part script for a particular version… Im almost certain scriptUI arrived with CS3 so you will need to make checks for this… There are a couple of differences between how they look from one OS to another… Oh yes a test my script cloud… just floated past the window or was it a flying pig hard to tell… I have long thought purchasing a version of an app should qualify you access to previous versions but thats never going to happen… You may get this on some expensive developer program but not for part time scripters…
    BTW if you have an old G5 knocking about… Then you can now get CS2 FOC great thats the one I've got…

  • Webroot mis-inform​ation

    I purchased 2 laptops from the Stuart FL store (#881) back in September 2013, they both came with a free Webroot Secure Anywhere disc with 6 months subscription on each. I was advised at the time of purchase that I was able to use one disc for both laptops and then renew the subscription once the first disc ran out with the second disc. On the day the first disc expired I inserted the second one only to find out that had also expired. i have just visted the store and was told firstly by a "really interested" sales person there was nothing they could do, so did I want to talk to her Supervisor. I asked to do so, the person who came to the desk appeared to be the manager and when i explained the situation he clearly implied that I had not understood what I was told! He pointed out the label on the front that states "activated at purchase, install immediately". Well that does not state that it expires and why would I install 2 disks as soon as I purchased the item? I asked if he could identify who sold the products to me from the receipt, his response was "what so i can point her out and you go and shout at her". Really, this is a store manager?? My suggestion was that he take note of who the employee was and talk to them to provide additional training and awareness to prevent this happening again, he was not in the slightest bit interested. I am an Elite BB member so spend a reasonable amount each year, not anymore if this is how i am to be treated and talked to by a so called manager, great Customer Service !!

    I just bought a computer a few months back and as I want to keep it running in great condition, I realize anti-virus software is essential in making sure it stays protected.  I know I’d be frustrated too if I was told my computer was covered for a year only to find the opposite to be true. Anti-virus discs like yours should be activated immediately at the time of purchase as we don’t have a way to activate them remotely when needed. It sounds like we didn’t relay this information to you though, and I’m sorry for the aggravation this caused.
    We realize that there are areas in which need improvement, but without feedback like yours, we wouldn’t be able to identify those problem areas. When situations like this arise, it’s something we should want to hear about so that we may address them for the future. I appreciate you taking time out of your day to let us know about this, especially as your last store visit didn’t go as smoothly as we would’ve hoped. Please know that I’ve documented your feedback so we may use it as a great coaching opportunity for our company.
    Nevertheless, I understand why the second disk wasn’t necessary right off the bat as each disk of anti-virus you received has a 3 user capability.   • Couldn't purchase an item

    I went to a local Best Buy store last night to purchase a car stereo. I waited in the department for about 20 minutes and no one came to help me. I evnetually took the box off the shelf that I wanted and went to the customer service desk to find out how to purchase it and arrange for Geek Squad installation. I was told that there was no one working that department at the time, because no one is in that department on Tuesdays. It was Wednesday. Then they said I could come back after 11:00 am the next day, however I work. How does a store expect to stay in business if they can't sell products to their customers? I'm frustrated at wasting  my time.

    Wow! The experience you describe definitely doesn’t match up with the customer service we hope to provide. Our stores should not only be friendly and informative, but our associates should help our customers, especially if they are specifically asked for assistance. I’m sorry to hear that we failed in meeting that expectation during your recent visit.
    When customers arrive in our stores, associates should be available to answer any questions they may have. We shouldn’t be asking them to come back another day, as their time is valuable. One reason that this may have happened to you is because of the system we use to schedule appointments. Our Geek Squad Auto technicians are usually one of the few that know how to use it, and if they aren’t there to schedule something, we may be unable to access it. Regardless of the reason, I’m sorry for the frustration this experience caused.
    To make sure we take advantage of your feedback, I would like to document this experience as it’s a great coaching opportunity for us.
