CS4 crash/unstable when doing mp3 preview
Hi!
I recently have this issue. When i put my like any mp3 file into source preview window and try to find the right spot to crop it or just preview it the file starts to play smoothly but... it doesnt wont to stop! Like premiere stops responding. Sometimes when u try to hit radnom buttons or mouse it will stop. But mostly its Alt+crtl+del.
Using CS4 4.1 , win xp sp3 x32, matrox rtx2 le, geforce 8800gt, asus striker extreme mobo,
As others have said, most MP3's will actually work
However, SOME of them, during the creation process, have information entered into the file (header?) that causes problems... so converting those files to WAV outside Premiere will usually fix the problem
I can not speak from a lot of direct personal experience with MP3's, as I do not often use them, as stated above. However, from experience with others' problems here, some can have issues. A normal thread on them goes like this:
OP - I have four MP3"s and three work fine. Why won't the other one work?
Forum - Convert that one "bad" one to .WAV and try again.
OP - That's just silly. I want them ALL to work.
Forum - Some do and some do not. What happened when you converted that one to .WAV?
OP - I have not. I just want this _______'ing software to work. I paid good $ for it and it's a piece-o______!"
Forum - Please try converting that one MP3 to .WAV and report back.
OP - Hey, it worked...
And so it goes.
As to your comment (John's) on JPEG, I find that PS is very critical of poorly formed JPEG headers. Many of my other programs open them fine, and a Save_As from them usually gets them open in PS. As I do not use JPEG in PrPro any more than I can help, I see few problems with files in that format in PrPro, more often in PS. Still, basically a "conversion" outside of PS usually fixes the issue.
OK, I need to put a few $'s in the kitty in the Lounge, 'cause I went over my limit too.
Hunt
Please Note: the reference to "OP" above has no tie to anyone in this thread. It is a ficticious composite of many threads from the past and none from this discussion.

Crashing when doing ram previews or exporting 7.0.1
AE 7.0.1
Windows XP SP2, 3 gigs of ram, 2.21 Ghz AMD processor (acer aspire), All-In-Wonder 2006 PCI Express card, 256 megs video memory, ATI X1300 base
The last 2GB of ram is new, just installed. Nothing else is crashing like this, though.
NOT running Open GL (but the same thing happens when I DO run OpenGL.)
It crashes about 1/5 of the time when doing ram previews IMMEDIATELY on trying to do them, and it crashes about 1/5 of the way through my export. I mean, AE is pretty damned useless if I can't export. I could almost sorta kinda live without the ram previews, but not really even then.I found the problem... Nero... See, I didn't even realize Nero launched when I launched my computer, and I thought I had deleted it, as it was just a trial and I never bought the full version... I uninstalled Nero and put after effects through its paces, no more problems.

Been having a bit of a headache (more than usual) with the pain in the [arse/butt/fanny] we know and love as Xcelsius '08.
On a few of our XLF's, the files were opening perfectly, but when you click preview it either just simply died with a Xcelsius error (leaving a couple of excel.exes's in its wake) or Mr Watson makes an appearance and tries to do some debugging. Either way the file is all but useless.
One simple(ish) workaround is to create a new blank XLF and export import your spreadsheet and copy/paste your components across from old to new. This seems to do the trick - though itu2019s not quite as simple as youu2019d like as some components tend to forget colours on copy paste and images tend to screw up. Also your layout is off set by ten or so pixels on each axis which is all rather annoying and time consuming.
A bit of hacking the XLF file has turned up the cause of the Bug. It seems that if components are sourced from other files (again with copy paste action) they can become corrupt over time (no idea why!) and basically corrupt the XML structure of your XLF file in a really simple way - the change the components colour scheme to one that does not match the overall XLF file - this exception is handled in typical bad grace weu2019ve come to love in 2008 and it bombs out.
So if youu2019re feeling brave and want to get around the bug without recreating your work or copy/pasting as above here's the workaround...
Make a backup of your XLF. Please!
Rick click you .XLF and click Send To.
Select Winzip (browse for it if not a default).
Youu2019ll be presented with a list of files. document.xml is the one we are interested in.
Youu2019ll also see a version of you XLS file (xldoc) and images youu2019ve put in image components and selected "embed".
Right click document.xml and select Edit with NOTEPAD.EXE (you may need to be patient here depending on number of components!)
What youre after is the <colorScheme> tag at the highest level of the XML structure. Near the top for me hereu2019s the first few lines from one of my filesu2026
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<CXCanvas guid="511745753-25300-4573-188-201-412442191122451" width="1000" height="600"><component id="BOA7690C68EC7741B0956C3096FB1214E5" className="xcelsius.display.BackgroundComponent" styleName="background04Skin" displayName="Background 1"><colorScheme>BOF04E18CD488C482CA442FDFD0B286C59</colorScheme><properties>
Copy the long string between the <colorScheme> and </colorScheme> tags. These are of course hex colour codes.
Next do a find in your document for u201C</colourScheme>u201D check the string before it is the same as the first one you found. Keep doing this all the way through the document. If you find any that differ you probably have the same problem I had u2013 if not back to the drawing board u2013 sorry!
Any you find different change to the proper value.
When your done save and close notepad.
Then click in the winzip window u2013 it should say some thing like u201CFile C:\testcrap\document.xml has changed since it was last extracted. Update archive with this file?u201D
Say yes, and close the winzip.
Now open your XLF in Xcelsius and preview u2013 hopefully no more crash.
Hope thatu2019s of some useu2026 and remember, hacking XML is not at all part of the Xcelsius supported workflow u2013 but crappy parsers call for crappy hacks
Keep a backup,
Cheers,
Jez.

I would like to think the problem is with the machine as well, but it has ocurred on Windows XP and Windows Vista.
My Windows Vista is a brand new computer, with nothing but the OS (and whatever Toshiba has put in it), Office and Xcelsius.
Right now I am building a Virtual PC machine with only Windows 2K3 and Office 2K3 installed on it. I will download all the patches and all the updates from Microsoft for it, but nothing else. I will then install Xcelsius and see if the problem persists.
I have run Xcelsius logged as the admin and as a user and the problem happens regardles.
Do you think it could be with the free trial version of the software? What is the version of the MFC80U.DLL you use? My version is 8.0.50727.1833
I have been impressed with what the software can do, but I am not too impressed with the way the software works. -
Dreamweaver crashes/freezes when doing find in site
When I use "find" it works fine for a single document but, if I choose "find next" after setting the search to the entire site (or a folder), it performs the search and starts to bring up the correct file, then it crashes. Behavior is the rainbow wheel of death indefinitately. I have to force quit and restart.
I have reproduced this about a dozen times.
I quit DW, trashed my cache file, emptied the trash, and restarted. This has made no change. I have no add-ons of any kind.
I have quit out of other programs and run DW with plenty of RAM available. When it freezes I look in Activity Monitor and can see that RAM is still very available and CPU usage is high, but not excessive. The DW program is unavailable. I've tried waiting out the freeze but it doesn't end.
So far, I have had no problems with DW doing other things. Not even when I open 20+ files at once and available RAM is a tiny sliver. In that case, I get freezes that last a few seconds, and the program is slow, but everything still works.
I searched extensively for other reports of this bug and found nothing about the find feature but that CS5.5 seems to be unstable and crashes a lot. Some reports have linked crashes to using FTP so I tried running find without first using FTP and it makes no difference.
I need to update a website with hundreds of pages and it's really untenable to search for broken links and outdated text by hand.
Running CS5.5. I just got this a couple weeks ago but I previously ran CS3 and could use find in the entire site (the same site actually) just fine.
I have an iMac 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2.5GB RAM. Running OS 10.5.8.
I've got to have this feature working. Please help.
Thanks,

Hmmm...doing some tests limiting the search to certain subfolders or to selected files. It seems the find function is working fine until it gets to a particular file. There are several such files. It starts to open that file then I get the rainbow wheel of death without end. When I force quit and relaunch, Dreamweaver remembers this file as the last one opened. I can open any of these files no problem (either from the splashpage or directly from the site directory) and I can search within them without incident.
What is the search string you are using? Have you tried making fragments of those files to see if you can identify the block of code that causes the freeze?
Besides, I can't imagine it would be a good idea to switch back and forth between different versions of the same program. There is not just one term I need to search for. This is an ongoing project.
It woudn't make any difference at all to use CS3 for this.
Okay, so here's the question, what is causing find to hang like this? It's not something stopping the file from opening or being searched. I will gladly remove any bad code or whatever it might be, but some of these files are huge (like 100 pages if printed). I'm fixing code DW is marking as bad but that doesn't seem to be enough.
Yes, that is the question! I have no idea, but sounds like you are on the right path to finding out....
In the DW Reports panel, there is a tab called "LINK CHECKER".
Under "Site: Reports..." there is no link checker anywhere. I found nothing else called reports.
What is the search string you are using?
A variety of things: lanmind, lmi.net, lye, chemical.
Have you tried making fragments of those files to see if you can identify the block of code that causes the freeze?
I just tried it. I took one of the smaller affected files (I tested as many as I could (it only will cause a freeze if the search term appears in the file) and found 8 "bad" files) and broke it into two halves, using the same header and footer for each. The original filename is y.htm. I broke it into y-test-1 and y-test-2. 1 was fine, 2 was bad. I then broke 2 into two files, y-test-3 and y-test-4. And they're both okay!! WTH.
I noticed that the source code had some bolded text. It shouldn't be bold there, just in the display, and it was pretty random. But there were 3 parts to the file (annotated links) with some bolded source text. These appeared in y-test-4. I used save-as to create the test files, not cut and paste. Yet y-test-4 does not freeze up.
When I deleted the 3 annotated links from y-test-2, it stopped freezing when being pulled up during a search (I highlight one or more files, making sure they are not already open, and choose "Find in: Selected files in site"). I deleted them one at a time and it wasn't until I deleted the last one that it made a difference. Then I put back the first two and left the third one out. And the file is okay.
But I still can't figure out why. There is random bolded source code in most of the files (all?), including those that don't give me any trouble. There are some weird symbols in this link, but they exist in other files that are fine. Hmmm...maybe not so fine. I'm now deliberately trying files using keywords that I know are in there. As opposed to looking for the outdated domain names like before.
It would really help if someone could give me a list of "bad" symbols or something. And what does the bolded text mean? And yes this is a BUG on Dreamweaver's part. The files open just fine and they display fine in Firefox. I can use the "find all" function when doing a sitewide search, even the "bad" files will be listed correctly, and then open the files manually. If the "bad" file is open, I can search within it no problem. The only thing I can't do is a sitewide (or selected files) search on files that are not open. The "bad" ones will cause Dreamweaver to freeze as they automatically open.
So yes, I've found a workaround, but that doesn't mean there isn't a bug and that I don't want it fixed. And the website I'm updating is really old with a lot of the work done in 1999. It's for a nonprofit, it's very very important to keep the pages mostly as is, and I'm taking over from someone who recently passed away. I am revamping things considerably, but, aside from fixing outdated links, I need to work with what's there and keep a "legacy" version. I'm porting the info to a blog format but it will take months. (And yes, this particular link is not important but it's the example I have to work with.)
The bad section of code is:
<LI><B><I>UTNE Reader's Y2K Guide</I></B><BR>
<UL> <A HREF="http://www.utne.com/bY2k.tmpl$search?db=dArticle.db&eqheadlinedata=Y2K%20Citizen%27s%20Act ion%20Guide">http://www.utne.com/bY2k.tmpl$search?db=dArticle.db&eqheadlinedata=Y2K%20Citizen%27s%20Act ion%20Guide</A></UL>
I'm hoping that doesn't break anything and that it comes out okay. You can see the page on the website here: http://ehnca.org/www/ehnlinx/y.htm
There are dollar signs elsewhere that seem to be okay but I'm not sure. That seems to be the only weirdness I can find.
Any comments? Are dollar signs (in links, not in text) bad? I tried another file and found only one dollar sign in it in a link. I removed it, saved and closed the file, and did a search on it. And it froze. So if dollar signs are bad, then they aren't the only things.
Help!
Thanks. -

How to solve crash problem when doing "package" with Indesign CS 5.5?
Hello everyone,
I've been having trouble with Indesign CS 5.5 when I use the package tool.
I work with indesign for a long time, create my document files, and when everything is done, finished, i go and do the Package.
But at a certain point it crashes and the file becomes demaged... even the original one i've worked initially!!
This happens everytime...
Does anyone ever had this problem?
Need your help guys?
ThanksThis is not normal behavior. I wonder what is different for you.
If you deselect "Check Links Before Opening Document," you should not be prompted to "Do not Update Links." This suggest you have corrupt preferences. So try:
Trash, Replace, Reset, or Restore the application Preferences: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/526990 -
CS4 Locks up when building a preview/rendering
Im on Windows XP running CS4 and I get a problem with it 'locking up' whilst building a preview or rendering.
It doesnt happen everytime, but enough to be a problem.
I have tried 'purge all' thinking this would 'free up' things, but no luck. When I get the lock up I hit 'control alt delete' and see the 'not responding' warning so I 'end task' only to presented with a 2 minute wait before the app finally clears.
I never had this problem with my previous version (6.5)
Any ideas whats causing it and can I do anything about it?I never had this problem with my previous version (6.5)
Apples and Oranges. CS4 is a whole differnt beast with probably 40% or more being completely rewritten compared to 6.5. The behavior you describe doesn't sound unfamiliar, though. It mostly happens with compressed formats that are not 100% to AE's taste. It then kinda dumbly buffers as many frames as it can and when it needs to flush them to load new ones, it seems to hang for a while. Anotehr reason could be simply not enough space in the MediaCache folder, so conformed media cannot be stored persistently. This can be further compounded by using OpenGL. What footage do you use? In any case, look into disabling OpenGL and cleaning out the Media Cahce from the prefs as a first step, the nlet us know, if the issues persist.

CS4 Crashes Regularly when opening a previously made document
All of my recently installed SC4 software will initiate and open perfect. However, when I try to open a file it gives me the attached error. I can begin a new document a nd render just fine.
Ok, one of the fonts on your system is causing CoolType to crash.
If you're on Windows 64 bit, and haven't updated to 11.0.1 (and you haven't) - then that might be a known bug that was fixed in 11.0.1.
Please update to Photoshop 11.0.1. -
Firefox crashing, even when doing a crash report
Firefox crashes often for me, so I came on to these forums for advice. When trying to do the about:crashes command, it crashes there too, so I'm not really sure of the next step!
Hello,
Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
* [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
* [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
Thank you. -
CS4 Crash's when I use Vanishing Point
I am using the Adobe Photoshop CS4 Class room in a book. Every time I am using the Vanishing Point Filter the program crashes.
hello
Today I experience just the same :Working on Lesson 9 in Classroom in a Book resulting in a Photoshop crash.
I get this volapyk message: Application Error: The instruction at 0x33f84a2d referenced memory at 0xffffffff. the memory could not be read. Clikk OK to terminate the program.
In this threads the latest advice, which maybe solved it, was:
""Try turning off any of the Aero themes you're using. Switch to a Windows 7 Basic theme.""
Can anyone explain that to me?
Earlier today I at long last responded to Photoshop's daily invitation to install the latest graphic card acceleration driver, ( just mentioned it)

ACR crashes sometimes when doing clone touch-up
This has now happened to me 4-5 times (over the last 3 months) and I'm recently motivated to post here because I lost about 30 minutes of ACR edits last night on a crash.
Occasionally when I'm editing a lot of pictures in ACR where the images involve cloning areas of the photo (I'm often trying to eliminate a stray item from the background in my soccer photos), I get a crash in ACR (hosted in Bridge). It's always while I'm using the clone/heal tool. It's not reproducible in that it works most of the time, but just crashes sometimes.
I've seen this problem in both ACR 4.1 and 4.2.
Has anyone else seen this problem? What OS? What CPU? What ram allocation to Photoshop?
-
I have had a problem with CS4 crashing. It does not happen at the same point of operation but it does it often. I thought I had resolved this problem recently when I discovered corrupted RAM I have replaced it. Here is the latest crash report.

Photoshop CS4 crashes on Mac OS X 10.8.3
I have CS4 on my mac OS X 10.8.3. Photoshop CS4 is crashing all the time.
I update it regularly.
It used to crash using layers, so i changed the graphic settings as suggested in this forum, now this is ok.
Now PS crashes:
- everytime i do "save for web"
- often when i work on text layers
- sometimes for nothing in particular
It is really impossible to work in this conditions.
Fireworks CS4 crashes too when trying to save a file. For no special reason.
Please help me.

InDesign CS4 crashes generating a TOC
I have read about other users problems with TOC's, but none of their solutions seems to be any help. My InDesign CS4 crashes either when I try to generate the TOC or when I select a specific paragraph style setting up the TOC. Unlike the users of later versions I get no message when the program crashes - it just happens.
I am working on a book with 40 files (chapters) and inserting index codes and generating index is no problem. I have 12 GB RAM. Please help me.
LeifNow I have performed your suggestions. I split one of the three documents in half and tried to open another document in the book - and the program crashed. I continued to spilt the halves, but since either half still caused a crash, i suspected that neither the text nor the pictures were the problem. I selected one of the halves and removed all text, all pictures, all master objects, but even if I now worked with two blank pages, the program still crashed!!
Then I studied the panels and removed all unused object formats, paragraph formats, character formats etc. At last I noticed that the index panel still contained a reference - even if all text (and with that also all index references (entries)) was removed.
Trying to open this reference to see what it contained, the program crashed even if I had only the document in question open!! I removed the index reference - and the program did not crash any more!!!
When I removed this particular reference in the two other documents, the document did not crash any more!!! And of course I removed it from all documents and now I can open all my 45 documents in the book without problems.
I suppose that the reason why this index reference caused the problem was that it contained slashes. The referred text was
Badeværelse/værksted/mørkekammer
which means Bathroom/workshop/darkroom, but in fact the meaning is important.
The conclusion is: InDesign cannot handle slashes in index references which conclusion I hope you will distribute to any user with problems.
Thank you for supplying me with tools to solve my problem.
