CS4, Data Merge, creating menu for restaurant

Hey folks.
I am making menu for a restaurant, and i am pretty familiar with Data Merge, but this one is driving me crazy.
The problem is in structure of my data table, CSV. All the tutorials and all the help files are revolving around data which is not broken down into SEGMENTS, rather each row is it's own segment.
For example, all tutorials have:
NAME; DESCRIPTION; PRICE
Food1; Nice food 1; 100
Food2; Nice food 2, 200
Food3; Nice food 3, 300
And what i have is a section name added to this as well, like this:
SECTION NAME; FOOD NAME; DESCRIPTION; PRICE
First section; Food1; Nice food 1; 100
-blank-;Food2; Nice food 2, 200
-blank-;Food3; Nice food 3, 300
Second section; Food1; Nice food 1; 100
-blank-;Food2; Nice food 2, 200
-blank-;Food3; Nice food 3, 300
As you see, some pieces of data are "missing".
So basically what i need InDesign to do is to recognize that section name is something that needs to be filled only once, until it hits another entry in SECTION NAME column.
You have all seen how restaurant menus look like, no need to further explain this i hope. Section name -> lots of data in that section -> New section.
Is that possible at all in InDesign?

Goran,
you can modify your data in InDesign without DataMerge:
- place your CSV file in InDesign as text
- convert it to Table - with ";" as field delimiter
- add new column after first column
you will have something like this:
First section|.|.Food1|.Nice.food.1|.100
-blank-......|.|.Food2|.Nice.food.2|.200
- next step - convert your Table to Text with tab as delimiter
- now replace three tabs "^t^t^t" to "#@#"
First section|.|.Food1|.Nice.food.1|.100
#@#Food2|.Nice.food.2|.200
- now replace two tabs "^t^t" to "#$#^p#@#"
First section#$#
#@#Food1|.Nice.food.1|.100
#@#Food2|.Nice.food.2|.200
- now replace "#@#" to "" (nothing) and apply Item ParagraphStyle
- now replace two tabs "#@#" to "" (nothing)
- now replace "#$#" to "" (nothing) and apply SectionTitle ParagraphStyle
- now replace "#$#" to "" (nothing)
so after all you will have:
First section (with SectionTitle ParagraphStyle)
Food1|.Nice.food.1|.100 (with Item ParagraphStyle)
Food2|.Nice.food.2|.200 (with Item ParagraphStyle)
now you can redefine TabStops in Item ParagraphStyle and play with NestedStyles :)
of course all these setps could be automated ;)

  • CS4 Data merge: Multiple records One template Multiple docs

I have 112 BCs to data merge, I'd like to import 10 records at a  time, into one business card template, and end up with 10 documents.  Then I can name them and go on my merry way to the next 10. Is this  possible? If I import them all at once I'll have 112 open docs and  that's just wrong on a myriad of levels..
    Thanks for any help!

Take a look at the Data Merge Panel menu for the Content Placement Options, and enable and set the number desired in the Record Limit per Document field.
This makes the assumption that all your BC data is in one source file for the merge.

  • CS5 - Data Merge - Create Merged Document - Multiple Record - Ignore title/other objects on page?

When I create a merged document with multiple records, the items usually come out right, but the problem is the the title or header of the page is usually also replicated into every line.
Is there anyway to seperate certain objects/images/text/etc so that when I create the merged document (multiple records), it would not duplicate those items?
This tutorial manages to do that:
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/instant-indesign/automating-a-catalog-with-data-merge/
But does not seem to explain how he keeps the title, seperation dots, etc, from duplicating with data merge.
    Thanks for any input

I thought I had tried that, but I guess I didn't do it correctly because I just got it to work.
    Now I feel silly.
    Thanks Peter for your help

  • Data Merge with photos, for a photobook, and also a DVD(?)

    I'm using CS4 on a Mac - am considering upgrading to 5.5.
I've used Data Mege to create documents for in-house printing with good success. It seems nearly fool-proof.  I viewed a David Blattner video on Lynda.com that shows how easy it is to incorporate photos into Data Mege as well.
Have any of you used InDesign to create a photobook, and if so, can you reccomend a company that can work with InDesign files rather than requiring you to learn their proprietary layout software?  I want to preserve and share several old family photo options.  I'm scanning the photos and typing their captions into a spreadsheet.
Is there some way this could also be turned into a DVD using the same set-up so that I can make the individual photo files and their captions available to other family members?

For a multiple record merge you need one set of placeholders, then set the margins and spacing in the merge options so the positioning is correct.
Warning: Using Preview in a multiple record merge will corrupt the file. If you press the preview button, Undo after looking at the preview, then merge without using preview.

  • Data merge & creating separate PDF docs

I am using the data merge functionality to create targeted registration announcements for training. For example, a letter that says dear (Name), you are confirmed for (Course Name) on (Date).
Within InDesign it works great, however when it exports to PDF it creates one big document with all of the names, albeit one per page. Is there any way to create a break so that if 5 names are added via data merge, then 5 separate PDF documents are created? It seems that otherwise the only other option is to manually create 1 page at a time which will sort of defeat the purpose.
    Thanks,
    FG

I don't know if this script works in CS4 or not:

  • Merging variable data using data merge plug-ins for In-Design

Has anyone had any experience with merging variable data (such as articles for a newsletter) with either of these plug-ins:
    DesignMerge, www.meadowsps.com/site/marketing/productinfo/designmerge.htm
    or Pageflex Studio ID, www.bitstream.com/publishing/products/studioid/index.html

Only Pageflex Persona (cut down version of Studio - doesn't require InDesign Server).
Variable stuff is extremely customisable, but design stuff is !@##%. Like Quark 3 simplicity... Customer support is poor in my experience. Program is clunky - they've only just added keyboard shortcuts to access tools... woohoo. Spot colours aren't fully supported - you have to specify them as CMYK and tell your printer to substitute later... you can't design across a spread at all - any two-page graphics have to be placed twice... I could go on!
For a newsletter, I'd just find a way with InD CS5. Maybe with the Copyfit plugin if you want more functionality, but not with standalone software. For complex variable areas in InD, I just create pdfs or separate InD files of the variable area, and list these as you would images in the csv file. The free LayoutZone addon (Thanks Martinho!) makes region exporting very simple - beware of some occasional bugs with strokes changing.
I did a job recently with 36 variables per entry, including 2 embedded InD files. The layout was a 3-fold A4 double-sided flyer, with each 3rd page being a few mm shorter to allow for the fold-in. CS5 multi-page size and 3-page spreads made this quite simple to set up.

  • CS4 Data Merge into single story

    Hi,
I layout catalogs that are very unstructured in their layout. I use data merge to quickly format hundreds of records which I then cut and paste (as text) into these facing page layouts. The layout is so inconsistent that creating a strict template for it doesn't work.
Is there a way to merge all of the data of a file that has 200-300 records with 10 or so fields for each record into one single story that automatically generates new pages as needed rather than one story per record?
    Thanks
    Chung

Data Merge creates a sepatate story for each record, but you can run a script aftwards to stitch the stories together. One possibility is http://www.rorohiko.com/wordpress/indesign-downloads/textstitch/

  • Using Indesign CS4 Data Merge on spreads in a book

I am creating a Date Book and trying to merge the dates, which are in an excel document, onto the pages of the spreads in the book using the Data Merge feature. I have a 2-page spread master page which has the dates flushed on opposite sides of the pages.
When I merge the data, I get the same date on both pages of the spread. Is there any way to get the data to change from the left to the right page so the next date appears in order?

The problem I am having is that the placement of the date (data) is in a different location from left page to the right.
As you suggest, if I make a document with 365 single pages with Master page A, apply the data merge and then Apply the Master page B to the right pages, the correct date that was merged stays where it is, but then the date on the Master "B" pages changes to the same date that is on the "A" page next to it.
The only thing I can think to do is take the date off the Master "B" page, then after I merge the data, I move the dates to the correct position on the B pages.

  • Creating "Menu" for AVCHD File

Is it possible to create a menu file, or something like it, for an AVCHD file?  I am hearing more and more that people want their video projects on flash drives, which is fine.  But the downside is, as far as I can tell, you lose the menu screen when you export to the computer, as opposed to burning a DVD.  Sometimes the menu screen contains a logo or other art that people want to display when the video is not running (i.e. before they push "play movie").
I have tried to figure out how to create a separate file with just the menu art, but so far I'm stumped.  Any help is appreciated.

    Susan Verner
Premiere Elements (any version) does not offer menu for export to file saved to the computer hard drive.
Disc menus are offered for burn to  end product. The exception to all this is the export choice of webDVD which is in reality a flash file with menus.
What version of Premiere Elements are you working with and on what computer operating system is it running?
As I recall, webDVD did not appear in Premiere Elements until version 9.0/9.0.1. It used to be that the user could share these webDVDs via photoshop.com. Now that photoshop.com is gone, its replacement Adobe Revel does not offer that opportunity.

  • Creating menu for authored movies

    Hi all,
I want to create a new menu for a movie. The problem is that the movie is already in a TS folder, and I don't know how to link the menu (play button) to the movie in the TS folder (iDVD won't accept vob files). Is this possible in iDVD or any dvd editor?
    Thanks in advance,
    -Greg
    eMacG4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Hi Greg,
My problem is not with authoring the movie however, it's that I don't understand how to add a menu to an already authored movie.
Since iDVD can't open an already authored movie, I know that it's impossible to finish it all within iDVD, but I like the menu editor in iDVD, and was hoping there was a way to create a dvd menu and then link it to an authored movie (by changing the scripting). As I said, iDVD cannot do what you described. Toast 7 Tatinium can. The VIDEO_TS already has the menu script and the encoded movie together. iDVD cannot take them apart and re-piece with a different menu script. Toast can take the main movie part and piece it with Toast's menu.

  • Remove prefix when creating menu for user in pfcg

Can I change the way pfcg creates a use menu? It now starts with the rolename and then the logical SAP menu path. When I have different roles with the same path the "collapse menu" option does not work as the two start with a diffent role name. Can I change this that pfcg starts with the logical path and not with the role name?

    Hi
If you are getting the role as prefix in the user menu
Go to the initial screen (when you logon onto the screen)
    Menu Tab click on Extras
    ->Settings
In the settings if  you have checked the option of show first level
-> Show first Level (if un checked you will not get the role name)
This is what my understanding of your question.
If not let me know exact problem try to help you.
    Cheers

  • CS4 Data Merge tag not replacing with data

I have a directory with multiple tags that my client updates weekly. Suddenly, one <<tag>> refuses to populate with the data.
On my clients windows machine it is the first tag (A column) that remains a tag.
On my mac it is the W column.
I have tried re-running with an older csv file and the problem persists.
I have looked at the csv file with text wrangler and see nothing of suspect.
    Anyone else seen this issue?

I's check to see if perhaps there's an extra field that's been introduced. You might need to open in a spreadsheet to make this obvious.

  • InDesign CC data merge is slow and crashes

Is there a way to create a data merge in Indesign for a large number of records, and not have it freeze?  I am on PC, using a new computer. I tried reducing the data source to just 6 columns and 5 rows as a test, but it still got hung up. I tried unchecking create overset, and I also tried creating merge to pdf, and .indd. So far any merge I have tried/tested has been unsucessful.
the client wants serial numbers on a small sticker like product to place on their inventory.
4000 serial numbers, 6 times each, and I set up a file with 300 per sheet
Is this possible, or will another program handle this?  OR Is there a script, OR am I doomed to to input the serial numbers myself, with the copy/paste and find/replace as my new best friend?
The numbers are not in numerical order, a typical number is WFC100652.

I was having the same problem while trying to do a merge of 7,000 records.  The computer would run slow and the program would crash after a hour of so. I then did the 500 records at a time, but that was taking to long and its ridiculous to have to do that in the first place.  I checked my data file as suggested on the message boards and it was fine, with no errors found.  I tried a workaround and to my amazement, it worked fine.  I realized that the program didn't crash when I did a preview of the intended merge.  What I did was, on the DATA MERGE tab, I did a PREVIEW of my merged data.  I checked through the "merged" documents and they looked fine.  I was even able to change a mistake that I found.  I then choose EXPORT TO PDF from the pull down menu (instead of CREATE MERGED DOCUMENT) and it created my PDF of 7,000 merged documents fine in less than 2 minutes.  I was then able to open up the PDF and print it out without any problems.  Since then, i've done jobs of 8, 9 and 12,000 records without any problems using the PREVIEW method.

  • Data Merge Not Displaying Images

This is my first go using Data Merge and so far so good. I have my master template set up and have successfully merged data from my csv file into a multi-page data merge document.
For reference I am using ID CC and Windows 7
My problem is data merging images.
My csv is set up using '@image as a header, and I am using a relative link in the below field (/image-folder/image.jpg)
ID recognises the image header and shows 'image' in the data source, but when I assign it to my frame nothing is displayed. I have the fitting set to fit the frame.
My path seems to be correct, as if I change it, my image does not appear in the layer palette.
I am not seeing the image when I hit 'preview' in the data merge palette, or when I perform the data merge itself.
Really in need of some help!

Try creating a new blank document containing a single graphics frame. Drag the 'image' entry from the Data Merge panel on to the frame. It should now show <<image>> within the frame (see screenshot). See if data merge works now.
If not, another thing to check is the separators in the file path in your csv file. To get the correct path, place a test image then go to the flyout menu in the Links panel and select Copy Info > Copy Platform Style Path.

  • Multiple Data Merge - Problem Resolve... Sort Of

I've researched this issue all morning and found issues dating back to 2012 regarding the problems with Indesign's Multiple Record Data Merge. Many of the issues are answered with the basic set up. Create a new page as a single page and non facing page document. It appears that an earlier bug was resolved that caused data merge documents to be placed off center when produced. The issue that I was experiencing was similar to what I had seen but not covered or not answered when it appeared someone was posting a question about it.
I started with a single page document, non-facing page, no initial text box, and sized to 8.5'' x 11''. I'm layout out name badges 10-up on a page. I had a previous template that had some graphics in the background for alignment purposes. I created a blank master page and a record holder for the name badge then loaded my data source, placed my data entries, and styled accordingly. Upon creating a data merge I selected Multiple Record and then previewed the data merge and positioned the elements on the page using the data merge controls top, left and column placement commands.
The preview looked perfect. The problem came when I finished the final data merge. The resulting page was not correct and looked nothing like the preview. Records were strewn about the page and excessive amounts of pages were created. I spent 4 hours trouble shooting this, far more than this project was billed. At this point it was a mission. In a reply dated back around 2013 I found that someone had removed a layer from their document. I had no layers. The only thing that was not a part of the actual data merge was the graphics that I had on the page for positioning that were not tied to the data merge at all.
I decided to delete these graphics and try to apply the data merge again. The results were perfect. I'm deducing from this experiment that the data merge needs to be done on a blank page. Which is counter productive to the Indesign mater page template. Any elements on the page need to exist as a a part of your data entry group and no other elements on the page. You only create one data entry group in the top corner of the page then use the data merge panel to position and duplicate. Otherwise, you will get a single page for each record you have with each record set 10-up in my case.
    Recap:
Create a single non-facing page document with no intial text box. (if you have more than one page the Multiple Records option will be grayed out)
Only have 1 layer in this document
Set a single data entry set/group on the master page.
Do not include any other graphics. Put them in after the data merge.
Click the Create Merged Document button in the data merge panel
Select "Multiple Records" from the drop down list
Click the Multiple Record Layout tab at the top of the Data Merge panel
Click "Preview Multiple Record Layout" at the bottom of the Data Merge panel so you can see the Entry Sets with the data in place
Use the Margins and Layout or Records inputs to position the elements on the document (see note below)
Click OK when everything is in place the way you like it.
After the data merge is complete you will have a new document that should look like you want it to. Now you can go into this document and start adding your design elements.
NOTE: Positioning the content without the base graphics can be tough if not impossible. What I did in this situation is placed my positioning guides on the page then went through Steps 1-9 to set up the document for merge. Once my settings were set I then clicked "Cancel" and deleted my positioning guides and graphics. The problem I was having was due to these elements being on the page. Once I created the document I then pasted my template guides back into the final data merged master page for production.
Request to ADOBE: Fix this issue so we can design our layouts and position our data merge elements without having to backtrack.

If you insist in multi-record data merge, you can have static/variable graphic and text components work. But, create a 3.5 x 2 frame (3.75 x 2.25 card w/bleed) around all of these components, and make sure nothing extends beyond this bounding frame. If the composition prevents you from enclosing all components, then make a PDF of content that is imported in as one graphic.
Another suggestion: don't combine the functions of variable data merge with imposition.
Create a 1up layout of business card to data merge the variable info.
From this file, export to PDF.
Then impose the individual cards with: an imposition app, PDF plug-in, Indesign script, or even manual placement into another document.
