Cs4 garbled images with opengl

hi everyone
for some reason, if "enable opengl drawing" is enabled, whenever i open up an image(it opens up at less than 100%; i.e. 25%) the image is garbled.
If i zoom in at 100%, everything looks just fine.
What I use:
Intel P4 HT @ 3GHz
Win Vista Ultimate 32bit
2GB RAM
Ati Radeon 2600 XT with 512 MB RAM
Photoshop CS3 Retail & CS4 upgrade.
Windows, Photoshop and video drivers are updated(manually checked).
Other things i tried: changing resolutions on my CRT monitor(usually i use 1600x1200; tried 2048x1578 to no avail).
I also tried disabling the opengl drawing and everything runs normally aka the images display correctly.
In other words, i believe there's a problem with that option and display drivers.
In one topic I found something similar with the resolution to let the application decide the settings to use. I've checked for something similar in ATI's control panel, tried i think all 3d settings(enabling/disabling them and of course restarting photoshop to re-read the settings)...unfortunately i couldn't get a better result.
On the other hand, my windows installation *might* be too old at this point and a reinstallation should be in order.
Anyway, if anyone has a suggestion I might as well try it out - got nothing to lose.
Here is a sample of what's happening:

Thanks for reading this.

ok, here is an update:
first of all, i didn't mention where i got the latest graphics drivers: from ATI's driver download page. In other words, even though the card's model was the same as the downloaded driver, for some reason *some* features weren't enabled(i guess).
today i tried downloading the latest drivers from the card manufacturer(namely sapphiretech.com) and surprise !!! it works like a charm !

  • Illustrator CS4 exporting images with subtle grid overlaye

I've run in to a rather troubling issue where Illustrator seems to be exporting images with a very subtle white grid overlay.
The raw images do not have this grid, neither do the images as viewed in Illustrator.
The grid appears when exporting as .png and .jpg in a variety of resolutions.
Any ideas what's going on or how to remedy?

The images were part of a web mockup that was created in AI.
"Save for Web" did not change the outcome.
I defaulted to Photoshop, which fixed my immediate problem.. but still does not answer my question as to why this is now happening when I have completed this process trouble-free numerous times before.

  • Garbled image with Hamamatsu Orca HR?

I've been using an Orca C4742-95 as part of a machine vision experiment.  I have two rigs set up, each of which have the same camera model hooked up.  Both computers are also using the same firewire card, a "Texas Instruments TSB82AA2 1394b OHCI-Lynx IEEE 1394 Host Controller" as Device Manager tells me.  Both devices are using drivers provided by Hamamatsu with the August 2011 revision of the DCAM-API.
When either camera is hooked up to the newer of the computers we are using, the image is garbled if it is set to 16-bit mode.  This is true with HCImage, any of the software that comes with DCAM-API, as well as captured through OpenCV.  Here's an example:
    http://imgur.com/PsLKy
The thing is, the problem isn't with the camera - both cameras, camera controllers, and cables work fine on the other computer.  Both computers are running Windows XP, however one was recently ordered and built (we downgraded from Windows 7 to XP in case that was the issue, with no luck).
In HCImage, if I set it to 16 bit, it will only work at 2/3-ish resolution or below - however it captures fine at full resolution when set to 8 bit.  It seems to me that it might be some sort of bandwidth issue at some point, but this computer is brand new and has much higher specs than the other one, which is 6 or 7 years old at this point (and can handle 16 bit at full resolution with no trouble.)
I've been trying for days to reach Hamamatsu support, so I was wondering if anyone here had any suggestions or past experience with this sort of issue.  If anyone knows a way to set the bit depth to 8 bit by default (or if there's a call I can make via the API to do this; I was unable to find any documentation), that would also help, as I'm using OpenCV to capture the stream and we need a video stream to move forward.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

This is a common issue with FireWire cameras on newer systems. Basically the issue is that the OHCI FireWire chipsets (provided by only a few vendors) typically only have a few KB of buffer space on-board. This is not normally a problem for most applications that use bulk transfer-style mechanism where there is flow control of the data and buffering. However, IIDC FireWire cameras make use of an isochronous transfer mechanism where they transmit a packet every bus cycle regardless of whether the host can accept it or not.
This is further hirt because over the past few years, transfer latences over PC busses (like PCI express vs PCI) have gotten longer. This increase in latency is due to various design decisions that favor overall throughput over latency. Additionally, the push to lower power consumption of these high-speed busses means they use aggressive power saving technologies to put links to sleep when they are idle and the CPU itself does agressive power savings as well. These techniques all increase latencies for certain types of operations. This is usually not a problem for throughput of transfers that use flow control but can cause issues for isochronous transfers like FireWire uses.
One thing you can do is try to disable some of the power saving features on your system. For instance, Windows 7 lets you change the overall power management strategy of your system. You can switch it to the maximum performance profile, and this tends to disable things like CPU sleep states and ASPM on PCIe links. You could also check and see if there are some power savings features you can disable in the BIOS.
Additionally, on some systems with integrated video, the update of the display can use a lot of memory bandwidth and compete with the firewire card for bandwidth to system memory. Disabling the Windows Aero interface has been known to help in some situations.
Point Grey has a really good support article that has some great info that should apply to any vendor's cameras as well:

  • PS CS4 problems with OpenGL drawing enabled

I've just upgraded from PS CS3 to PS CS4 (default 32 and 64 versions) and I'm having problems with seeing image files above a certain size (even moderate size) with OpenGL Drawing enabled. Disabling OpenGL Drawing results in very slow image display (very easy to see the blocks being drawn one at a time), much slower than with PS CS3.
I'm running Vista 64 with latest updates. I'm trying to get PS CS4 32 running properly first, but PS CS4 64 seems to be having similar problems.
GeForce 9600 GT video card with latest driver 178.24 (updated yesterday and rebooted many times since then). That card is in Adobe's list of tested cards.
Main monitor (where I display Photoshop images) selected as primary in the driver dialog.
    I put palettes/panes on my 2nd monitor.
I use Ultramon for 2nd monitor taskbar functionality. Turning Ultramon off doesn't seem to help, although I may need to disable Ultramon from launching on reboot.
No plugins installed yet in PS CS4 (32), as per Adobe kb advice.
4GB of RAM with Memory Usage set within Photoshop's Ideal Range.
For testing, I've been opening a few different size (px and bytes) RGB image files in Photoshop by dragging them from an Explorer window into the Photoshop window, then clickin in the Photoshop window to make Photoshop active and show its palettes.
First with OpenGL Drawing enabled in Performance, default Advanced Settings.
    JPEG, 3600 x 2600 px, 4.5MB
    - opens and displays ok (short delay before palettes appear)
    - zooms and rotates smoothly
    TIFF, 2 layers, 800 x 600 px, 16 bits, 2.5MB
    - opens and displays ok (short delay before palettes appear)
    - zooms and rotates smoothly
    TIFF, 1 layer, 3600 x 2600 px, 16 bits, 54MB
    - doesn't open properly, shows checkerboard instead of image, with checkerboard in navigator and layer icon in layers pane
    - histogram is fine
    - zooming and rotation are not smooth (jumps to new position/size)
    - duplicate layer caused PS CS4 to stop working, with a close program dialog
    - open PS CS4 32 again, no OpenGL message today, and OpenGL Drawing is still enabled (although I got the OpenGL Drawing message more than once yesterday)
    TIFF, several layers, 3600 x 2600 px, 16 bits, 306 MB
    - doesn't open properly, shows checkerboard instead of main image
    - icons in layers pane look fine, same as navigator image
    - checkerboard zooms and rotates smoothly
    - duplicate layer is still checkerboard, back one history state stopped working / close program dialog
    - started PS again, opened 1 layer TIFF, closed and tried to open multi layer TIFF again, but stopped working / close program dialog again
I then tried the same images with OpenGL Drawing disabled in Performance.
    3600 x 2600 px JPEG
    - ok, but slow, blocky redraw
    2 layer 800 x 600 px TIFF
    - ok, but slight delay in redraw (smallest of all the files, both in px and bytes)
    1 layer 3600 x 2600 px TIFF
    - opened ok, but slow, blocky redraw
    multi layer 3600 x 2600 px TIFF
    - opened ok, but slow, blocky redraw
From what I've read in various Adobe kb notes, it sounds like there's some kind of conflict with my video driver, but I haven't been able to figure it out. I even tried the registry plugin from the Adobe kb to disallow OpenGL Windows, but that didn't seem to make any difference. It didn't even stop me being able to select and use OpenGL Drawing in PS CS4.
Any help would be much appreciated. I'm tearing my hair out here and I'm feeling a bit like I've blown my money on the upgrade so far.

I had another look at PS CS4 64 and those smaller (by file size) images that I can see with OpenGL Drawing on rotate and resize in a jumpy way, not smoothly like in PS CS4 32.
The multi layer TIFF that showed the images in at least the layers pane and navigator when using PS CS4 32 only shows the checkerboard in the layers pane and navigator in PS CS4 64.
Either way, neither version is anywhere near working properly.
Oh yeah, and I made a typo on the RAM. It's 6GB and not 4GB, not that I think that would make any difference.

  • MacBook Pro to TV via VGA to Components gives garbled image

    Hello everyone,
I'm the proud owner of a new unibody MacBook Pro and so far I'm loving it. There is, however, one problem. I would really like to connect the MBP to my HD TV, which happens to be a Sony FD Trinitron WEGA. At first I bought the Apple mini-DisplayPort to DVI and DVI to Video cables. It turned out the mini-DisplayPort to DVI was DVI-D and the DVI to Video was DVI-I.
I returned it and bought the mini-DisplayPort to VGA and a VGA to Components cable. When I finally got the Mac to recognize the TV, I got the garbled image with horizontal purple lines (see links to photos below). I tried every resolution from 800x600 to 1280x1024 with various refresh rates, but nothing helped. Does anyone have any idea why that might be happening? Thank you in advance.

    Hi BSteely,
Thank you again for your response. I tried to get the the TV to work with Windows, but I couldn't get the nVidia driver to output to Components. I've considered the box option, but to be honest I'd probably just get an Apple TV instead. I do want to try one more things though, do you think a VGA to S Video cable will work?
I think I'm going to call Apple support (since I still have access) and ask them how they would solve this problem. Clearly Apple has forgotten about the people who want to connect their laptops to TVs that didn't just come off the production line. One of the reasons I got the laptop was so I could watch iTunes content on the TV....
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Bridge CS4 won't output to pdf multiple images with same filename

Hiya...my googling efforts have thus far failed!
I've got CS4, and in Bridge, I created a New Smart Collection to find all filenames in a folder containing "." or ".jpg" - which in turn searched through all the subfolders like what you used to be able to do in Photoshop CS3.  Very simple stuff, but all the images are jpg's, but in multiple folders (I don't want to move them out of the folders, as the files came from an external source, and there are heaps of folders, and I don't want to pdf each subfolder seperately as it will take forever).
The problem is that some of the files have the same filenames (again I'd prefer not to rename, as it happens a lot on this project, and they are all over the place).  So whilst Bridge will show the thumbnail images correctly in the content tabbed screen in my New Smart Collection, but once I've done the Output to PDF thing, for example, instead of showing both different images it has pdf only the first image but repeated it twice.  And this happens multiple times throughout the pdf, the more times the same filename is used, the more times the first image gets repeated.
I know that it is messy to have multiple similar filenames, but why can't bridge just place the image anyway?  It allocated a space for it on the pdf and does show it in bridge, it just doesn't seem to survive the transfer to pdf well.
The only other thing that I have done is use the below link (which was posted on another adobe forum thread) to create a custom pdf output template (nothing too fancy, just number of rows / columns, size, font etc).  But I've tried using the standard bridge templates and it does the same thing.
    http://www.proficiografik.com/2009/08/03/save-custom-pdf-output-template-in-adobe-bridge-c s4.html
Any help would be appreciated...even if to tell me that I am being unreasonable!
    UPDATE 16/11/09
Just to let you know that I seem to have resolved the bug inadvertently with one of the Adobe updates. The below is the link for the AdobeOutputModule-2.1-mul-AdobeUpdate.zip which was released on 2/19/2009 - which allows for headers & footers to be placed in the Ouput pdf. I finally installed it today, and everything seems to be working fine now (i.e. I can pdf multiple images with the same filenames and the pdf will actually show each different image rather than repeating only 1 of the images).
Must have been a fix installed in the contact sheet templates that get installed with the update - not sure why the original version was corrupted, but I've left that with the Adobe guys (I submitted a bug report - and they were able to replicate the problem but hadn't fixed it as yet).

When I click import from disc I am asked to choose a disc and then I get this message:
The following photos will not be imported because they are already present in the catalog. To see these photos in the catalog select 'Show in Library' (the import will be canceled).
This is followed by a long list of images. If I click 'Show in Library' I can see all the images with the same filename. And then they start to automatically write over those images with images from the disc. However they keep the same metadata and keywords from the previous images. If I click on Import and deselect the "don't reimport suspected duplicates" box, it imports only the images that don't share filenames and none of the images that do.
Is there a way of setting the "Don't reimport suspected duplicates" box in preferences?

  • Hi, I've just downloaded the latest release 10.1.1 and now I do not see any more correctly my clips either in the canvas and in the timeline. Playing clips, they now appears with garbled images, completely unstables: I can not editing in these conditions!

Hi Russ, Thank you for your reply!
    System Spec:
    2x2.26 Ghz QUAD-CORE
    12 GB RAM 1066 MHz DDR3
I've stored the library in HARD DISK which is installed inside my computer (1 TB capacity) and different from my hard disk in which I've installed all my applications (600 GB capacity).
I've installed FCP since 2001, bought FCP X in 2012: never had a problem. Yesterday I was editing my video of my last vacations (in California!) and I have updated FCP X, downloading FCP X 10.1.1: then the problem!
Strange is the fact that I've just tried to export a short project, I can see the final product quite well.
What is impossible is playing the clips within Final Cut: they are jumpimg, moving, presenting some frame in green or red ...
    Everything all right in iMovie.
I've just checked the RAM: 9GB out of 12 GB is busy, could this be the problem?
Motion is very slow: for 20 sec of project, it takes minutes to play. And once again, if you finalize the projet and export it in Quicktime, you can see it correctly.
I do hope you may suggest something, I'm getting crazy!
    Thank you in adavance

My favorite way is to run the python script that comes with the license repair tool.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/error-licensing-stopped-mac-os.html#main_Solutio n_2__Run_the_License_Repair_Tool
Download the License Recovery dmg file and carefully follow the instructions for Mac OS 10.7
I know it works, I have successfully recovered from a 150:30 before using this script properly.

This happens to me too, with Mountain Lion. It appears to be a bug in Preview. If the file starts out as something without transparency, a jpeg or even a png without transparency, Preview doesn't save it with transparency, even though Preview says it is - check the info for the image.
I have just found a workaround which may be useful: Take a screenshot of your image, then use instant alpha on that. It will be saved with transparency - look under info/general  in the info panel.

  • Help with displaying image using OpenGL ES sample code - image size prb

I am using some sample code that currently displays an image 256x256 pixels. The code states the image size must be a power of 2. I have tried an image 289x289 (17^2) and it displays a square the same size as the 256x256 with a white background. I want an image 320x320 displayed. Should be obvious for people familiar with OpenGL. Here is the code which displays the image and rotates:
    - (void)setupView
// Sets up an array of values to use as the sprite vertices.
    const GLfloat spriteVertices[] = {
    -0.5f, -0.5f,

+I am using some sample code that currently displays an image 256x256 pixels. The code states the image size must be a power of 2. I have tried an image 289x289 (17^2)+
The phrase "a power of 2" refers to 2^x so your choices above 256 are 512, 1024 etc.
The texture size has nothing to do with the displayed size - OGL will stretch or shrink your texture to fit the size of the polygon you're displaying it on. I recommend you scale your image to 256x256 and work on make the polygon the size you want and work on your image quality from there.
You can work on the size or orientation of the poly surface to make it larger but OGL doesn't support setting a model to a screen image size or anything like that. That sounds more like a Quartz or CoreGraphics kind of thing if you want to set an exact screen size to the pixel.
    HTH,
    =Tod
PS You can display your code correctly by using { code } (without the spaces) on either side of your code block.

  • Possible minor bug when selecting inverse with OpenGL enabled

When I make a selection (like a rectangle selection in the middle of the canvas) and then inverse it (Shift-Command-I), the marching ants only appear on the right and bottom of the canvas. This seems to occur only with OpenGL enabled. I haven't noticed any part of the layer missing or being affected by this when I cut/copy. Has anyone else noticed this?
Command-A or manually selecting the whole canvas results in marching ants on all sides.
    Mac OS 10.5.6
    CS4 11.0.1
    2 GB RAM
    256 MB VRAM

Thanks, hiding/revealing doesn't seem to change it, but changing the screen mode definitely does. It only seems to be a problem with a floating window (meaning that if I start with the floating window and hit F three times, it doesn't "refresh" to display the missing ants).

  • How do I import an image with an opacity mask from AI into FW

I have created a graphic in AI which contains several images with associated opacity masks. The mask use a radial gradient to achieve the desired effect. I am unable to import these images into FW with the mask effects intact even though the layers appear to be there. What am I doing wrong? I don't see away to do it in FW directly. If there's a work-around that would be appreciated too.

Fireworks' masking is pretty good. If you have your object and your mask in FW, arrange the objects so that the mask is above the object, select both, then click on
Modify > Mask > Group as Mask
Where the mask is white, your object will be fully opaque. Where the mask is black or 100% transparent, your object will be fully transparent. Where the mask is grey or partially transparent, your object will be, as well, proportionally to the grey level/transparency level in the mask.
Fireworks also has some built-in masks to fade objects radially or linearly. In CS3, these are under
Commands > Creative > Fade Image
but they got moved someplace else for CS4. I can't find the info on that in the help, though, sorry. Oh wait. It might be the Auto Vector Masks:

  • Why does Illustrator CS4 save pdfs with clipping paths and make rasters of gradient areas

I am on a IMAC and upgraded to 10.6.8 Jan 2014. I am using CS4 Illustrator to create with. When i save my work as a pdf then reopen the pdf in Ill to make changes, the whole page has:
A.) Multiple clipping paths around it
B.) Most text has now become outlined. Not editable anymore.
C.) Gradient areas have multiple clipping paths of the single gradient area
D.) The gradient areas now become rasterized.
This is very frustrating as now all of my marketing files, some 300+, are worthless. I don't know where to look anymore to find the problem.
    Please help.
    Thank you very much

    John,
I have the presets as you have shown. I had been editing the supplied items as you suggested. Then figured i should ask the questions of those who are better than I.
But still a bit confused as to why the new save places clipping paths around the document.
Thank you John and Monika for your help.

I do a save as "pdf" in the format pull down tab. I save to a folder on the hard drive. Where is the "Illustrator editability" check box? I presumed it is in Acrobat some where
but i seem to be lost.
It is in Illustrator's Save Adobe PDF dialog, which pops up before the saved file is written.

Sorry i didn't mention this, but this seems to have occurred when using images and text from provided pdfs.
That's a critical fact. If you didn't do the original save, the above is moot, and it's too late to exercise any control over the save process. Someone else failed to save for editability. The only thing you can do is clean up/repair the content, (release clipping masks, rebuild rasterized elements, expand objects, etc.), and save correctly as AI. Then, if necessary, re-save as PDF with the correct settings.
