CS4 InDesign Server hangs

I've ran into a problem where the my CS4 InDesign Server hangs.
I'm adding pages dynamically using the JAVA API.  Basically I go through all the content, check to see if I've reached the ParagraphStyle that indicates the "end" of the document.  If not, I add a page, flow the content into a text frame on that page & check if I've reached the end.  If not I add another page.  And so on until I finally reach the end. But it ends up hanging while attempting to do this.  What's odd, it works the first 5-10 times, but it takes longer and longer each time it adds a page until around the 10th page or so, it completely stops.  I'm using the "duplicate(OptLocationOptionsEnum arg0, OptVariableType arg1)" method on the com.adobe.ids.layout.Page object.
Any ideas?  I can provide sample code if it would help.

Hi Chandi,
      If Microsoft fix is not working or it is too old to apply then go for manual process i.e.;
      In the Microsoft KB article follow this :-
     Services that use the local system account to log on to a Windows Server 2003-based computer start if the Allow service to interact with desktop
     option is turned on. To turn this option on, follow these steps:
In the Services tool, click the service that you want to start, and then click Properties.
Right-click the Log On tab, and then click to select the Allow service to interact with desktop check box.
Click OK to exit the Properties dialog box.
   This will solve your problem.

  • [VB] Opening PageMaker layouts with InDesign Server

    I have numerous PageMaker 7.0 layouts that I need to open with a script running on InDesign CS4 Server.  These layouts open correctly using InDesign CS4 Desktop.  InDesign does a conversion on the layout but they do open correctly.  Does anyone know how to open these layouts from a script?
    When I attempt to open these layouts, using the Application.Open method, I get the following error:
              Cannot open the file "test.pmd".  Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing.
    Any assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Hi Sheldon,
    With CS4, InDesign Server no longer supports opening PageMaker files. This info is included in the Release Notes. InDesign CS4 will still open them so you could pursue a solution there.

    Hi folks,
    I'm trying to connect my Extends Script Toolkit installed with the InDesign Server CS4 on a XServe Mac with a running InDesign Server thread. This won't work, see screenshots. Any hints on this topic? Are their any log files written by the Extends Script to solve the problem?

  • Indesign Server CS4 service is not starting on Windows Server 2003 64bit

    Hello guys,
    I am not able to start Indesign Server CS4 service on windows Server 2003 SP2 64bit .
    I have successfuly configured the service with InDesignServerService.msc, set the port to 18555. InDesignServerWinService the Log On option is set to "This Account". Also tried using different accounts!
    When starting the indesign service from windows Service control panel I get this error:
    Could not start the InDesignServerService x64 service on Local Computer.
    Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.
    Error log from windows Event viewer:
    Error
    Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the InDesignServerService x64 service to connect.
    Indesign server application works if launching from command line with the specified port 18555.
    If trying to lauch IndesignServerService.exe from command line, there is a delay and finally nothing happens.
    I have also tried launching 32bit indesign server service and the same error comes.
    Would be grateful for your thoughts!

  • Installing Transparency Flattener Preset for Indesign Server CS4

    I'm trying to figure out how to install a transparency flattener preset for InDesign Server CS4.
    I can see how they are installed for the InDesign app.  Edit -> Transparency Flattener Presets...
    But I'm not sure which directory to install these on for the server.
    I've seen a post that mentions:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign\Version 6.0\en_US\Transparency Flattener Presets
    /Users/<UserName>/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/Version 6.0/en_US/Transparency Flattener Presets
    for the Desktop version.  But when I place files here even for the CS4 Desktop, they don't seem to show up in the UI.
    Any help would be appreciated,
    Thanks,
    Dennis

    Thanks, to get this working in a server script, I ended up just programmatically creating the flattener preset, rather than worrying about the .flst files.  (Java code below)
      //Setup Transparency Flattener (if not in application)
      FlattenerPreset flattenerPreset = app.getNamedChildFlattenerPreset("Test");
      if (flattenerPreset == null) {
          flattenerPreset = app.addFlattenerPreset();
          flattenerPreset.setName("Test");
          flattenerPreset.setRasterVectorBalance(VariableTypeUtils.createLong(100));
          flattenerPreset.setLineArtAndTextResolution(2400.0);
          flattenerPreset.setGradientAndMeshResolution(400.0);
          flattenerPreset.setConvertAllTextToOutlines(false);
          flattenerPreset.setConvertAllStrokesToOutlines(false);
          flattenerPreset.setClipComplexRegions(false);
      pdfPreset.setAppliedFlattenerPreset(flattenerPreset);

  • Adobe CS4: InDesign makes server crash.

    The situation is like this:
    We have a client with some Windows XP and Windows 7 computers. These computers are using Adobe CS4 InDesign.
    We are encountering server issues (freezes) due to the use of InDesign.
    All clients have InDesign installed locally. The files they use are stored on a server:
    Windows Small Bussiness Server 2011 (Windows Server 2008 R2); 16 GB RAM,  RAID5 disk setup; Data drive has 60% free space.
    All hardware has been replaced recently.
    The Network is an 1 Gbps LAN environment.
    For now, we know that the server freezes as soon as someone uses InDesign.
    We presume this is because off the directory of some files may be changed on the server. Since InDesign works with a database,
    it can’t find the required file and freezes.
    Is anyone familiar with this problem? Does someone know if there is a hotfix?
    If you know more about this or have you had identical problems as well? Please let us know.
    We are looking forward to hearing from you.

    Are you saying that the server freezes or that InDesign running on the clients freezes?
    And what exactly do you mean by freezes? Stops and needs to be rebooted?
    The only operations that InDesign running on a client system does associated with a server is to issue file open, read, write, and close operations. It is not running on the server itself and in theory cannot freeze the server.
    Provide a bit more information and maybe we can be of further assistance.

  • Cannot install InDesign Server CS4: Win 2003 x64

    One of my customers has just purchased InDesign Server CS4 (Single Instance, Premium License) and I'm trying to install build 525 on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition x64. I select the default 'Easy/Recommended' installation settings and the installer runs through, but then displays the message below. I've tried installing to different directories but hit the same error every time.
    When I select 'Next' the installer lists the following products and components have been successfully installed:
    Adobe InDesign CS4 Server
    ID Server service files
    ID Server components
    ID Server service files (x64)
    However, it doesn't appear to have installed correctly, as if I start the InDesign Server service and then execute the following test script nothing happens:
    #target indesignserver;
    //HelloWorld.jsx
    //Create a new document.
        var myDocument = app.documents.add();
    //Get a reference to the first page.
        var myPage = myDocument.pages.item(0);
    //Create a text frame.
        var myTextFrame = myPage.textFrames.add();
    //Specify the size and shape of the text frame.
        myTextFrame.geometricBounds = ["6p0", "6p0", "18p0", "18p0"];
    //Enter text in the text frame.
        myTextFrame.contents = "Hello World!";
    //Save the document (fill in a valid file path).
        myDocument.save(new File("/e/HelloWorld.indd"));
    //Close the document.
    //Close the document.
        app.documents.item(0).close();
    Any ideas?

    I gave up on this and ended up installing the 32 bit version which works fine. It appears that there is a problem installing 64 bit on Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition so watch out...

  • InDesign CS5 hangs when conecting to network volume

    Not sure if this is an InDesign issue or Mavericks problem, so I’ve posted here and there.
    This problem only happens with InDesign if I have our file server connected (a share point on another mac running 10.5.8). If it is unmounted all works as it should.
    Setup: Mid 2010 Mac Mini 2.4 Core 2 Duo with 8gb ram
    I have:
    Trashed various InDesign pref files
    Reinstalled mavericks via the recovery partition and it’s on 10.9.4 with everything updated
    Uninstalled InDesign using their own uninstaller - checked the included all prefs option
    Reinstalled InDesign and updated it to 7.0.4 (CS5)
    I then Repaired Permissions and ran maintenance scripts too.
    Restarted
    ... still have the issue.
    This is what happens if the network volume is mounted and I’m connect (as Guest):
    InDesign will load
    I can create a new blank .indd and save it
    I can open that blank .indd
    I can open that blank .indd if it includes just text
    I can open that blank .indd if it includes just text and images (not located on the network volume)
    If I open that blank .indd and it includes images that a located on the network volume or any pre-existing .indd which have images from the network volume InDesign hangs once the open dialogue box closes, after a force quite an .idlk file is left behind in the finder.
    If I place/insert an image, the Place dialogue box opens and I can access the desktop & the documents folder via the sidebar and place/insert images from there into the document. But InDesign will hang if I select the Users Home folder,  the Dropbox folder or any folder from the file server.
    As I said this only happens in InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop can open files from the network volume to their hearts content without issue.
    Console log:
    When I open the open or save dialogue in InDesign I get the following looped in the console – it will only stop looping those lines once I quite InDesign.

    Clearly InDesign does not like the network volume attached or there is some sort of permissions problem going on, I have no idea why this is happening, other machines running Mavericks and InDesign 7.0.4 have no issues.

    Upgrading to osX Yosemite seems to have solved this issue

  • InDesign Server :line 13: 2753 Bus error "$installed_name" "$@"

    [InDesign Server CS4, CS5, CS5.5    line 13: 2753 Bus error "$installed_name" "$@"]
    We support a few clients on various version of InDesign Server and all have exactly the same issue upon having the application produce PDF files...   line 13: 2753 Bus error "$installed_name" "$@"   which causes InDesign Server to unexpectedly quit.
    Searching these forums we have found CS3 instances of this error message pointing to fonts not loaded on the machine running InDesign Server, but no "this is what we did to fix it" solution has been found.
    Our customers are running beefed up MacPros or Mac Minis with Mac OS 10.6 (non server) and OS 10.7 (server), 8GB - 16GB RAM, 1TB HD
    For font management we have the following being utilized:
    - Universal type server
      - if no plugin exists for InD Server, not sure how much this app will help manage fonts
    - Suitcase Server
    - if no plugin exists for InD Server, not sure how much this app will help manage fonts
    - Loading all fonts into:   /Users/*/Library/Fonts
      - seems to be the best option for font management on a system running InDesign Server
    Our company develops a plugin for InDesign Server and allows regular InDesign to produce the pdfs in a similar manner.  Running our plugin under regular InDesign we DO NOT have these issues of BUS errors, yet as soon as any of our customers utilize InDesign Server, they all immediately see BUS errors.
    We have written a shell script that quits (normally) indesign server, and relaunches it (if quit abnormally) so that we have some semblance of an "always on" InDesign Server application, but this is merely a band-aid fix for a bigger problem.
    We are pointing the finger at Adobe InDesign Server being the problem here, yet our customers do not care where the blame is placed, we are seeing a solution for them in any fashion that presents a permanent solution.

    Hi Julio,
    I am having the same exact problem. We are evaluating the InDesign server and will consider buying it only if it performs reasonably stable. This "installed_name" "$@" is baffling us.

  • InDesign Server crashing on hyperlinks - HYPERLINKS.RPLN

    When trying to access properties of a hyperlink it causes InDesign to crash. I can assign properties of the hyperlink but if I try and retrieve properties it hangs and crashes resulting in the error below. I'm using InDesign Server 64bit version 7.0.4.553. What's interesting is this works completely fine when testing using InDesign CS5 client version.
    I have used Extend script toolkit to try and debug the issue but you can't even use the databrowser to look at the hyperlink properties as it'll crash there as well. But if I debug using toolkit with client version of InDesign it works fine. It really seems like an issue with InDesign Server and I'm not sure what I can do to work around/fix this problem.
    Example script -
    var myDoc = app.open([document path]);
    for (i = 0; i < myDoc.hyperlinks.length; i++)
         var myHyperlink = myDoc.hyperlinks[i];
         var newDestination = myHyperlink.destination; // - this causes indesign to crash
         //Do some processing...

    Any help would be great! I can post more information if needed.

    I think I may have found the problem...
    It appears that the particular document I'm working with has a shared link that is contained in another document (in InDesign if you look at the hyperlink details it is a shared destination and for "document" it specifies a different document then the current one. This would probably happen when the hyperlink is copied from a different document. When trying to access that shared link it is unable to get the properties of it because there is actually no reference to it as the other document isn't open on the server.
    This is an interesting problem because I'm not sure where to go with this... I need to be able to get the hyperlink but with the given scenario I can't figure out a way to do that.

    This canon printer has worked seamlessly when we had Leopard 10.5 using CS4. It's only been since we received the new Mac Pro Tower. The Canon printer has a Fiery attached and we use the latest driver for that Fiery. All the images in this file are .tiff's. The user does have Pre-Flight on and the Print Preset: Custom, Printer: Canon Color Printer, PPD: Canon iPR Server T1 Ver.1.0. I set up the printer in the Print & Fax Dialog using the IP address, with LPD Protocol, Queue name blank (as we never had to really use one in the past). and Print Using the iPR Server T1 driver. Rebooted the Mac, ran disk utility from the CD. I have been working on this issue for a couple of days now and found many troubleshooting tips on the internet but none have worked. Is there something in the new OS X Snow Leopard that is not working with CS4 Indesign now? Any suggestions would be very helpful. Thank you!

    What fonts are you using? Are they PS Type1 by any chance? The update to 10.6.7 has introduced some problems with the older Type 1 fonts. Do a Google search for Mac 10.6.7, Type 1 font problem to see some discussions.

  • Tagging TextFrames With InDesign Server - not showign in desktop?

    Hi all,
    Ive come across a weird issue with marking up text frames with InDesign Server (CS3) whilst processing xml rules during an xml import.
    I run the following code on desktop it works fine. When run on server, it works apart from the frames will not highlight when "Show Tagged Frames" is selected.
    (code cut for brevity)..
    //..open a new doc, import the xml file, process the rule set.
    function AddTextFrame(element)
    this.name = "AddTextFrame";
    this.xpath = "//textFrame";
    this.apply = function(element, myRuleProcessor)
    with(element)
    var frame = page.textFrames.add();
    //...frame geometry code goes here...
    markup(frame);
    As Ive stated, the code is functionally fine on desktop and server, but the tagged frames will not highlight when the document is created on server?
    Ive tried numerous work arounds (placeIntoFrame etc) but to no avail.
    Any ideas, is this a known/expected behaviour?
    Cheers, Scott

    After much local experimentation and iteration with Adobe tech support, we have a fix for Problem nr. 1: cannot define the port that works in our environment (IDS CS4 running as a service, Windows 2008 Server).
    Add this parameter to your server startup command line for each instance of InDesign Server you're running:
    -ORBendPoint giop:tcp:<serverIP>:<portNumber>
    where
    <serverIP> is the static IP of the server that is running IDS. Note: The OmniOrb docs imply that you can use the server's domain name here, but that didn't work for us. 127.0.0.1 also did not work. The IP number does work. This might help your Problem nr. 2: wrong IP address in the application IOR if you set it to the IP you want to listen on, but we have no experience with that.
    <portNumber> is the port you want IDS (via OmniOrb) to listen on. If you're running multiple instances as we are, each instance should have its own unique port number.
    I completely agree that, as an enterprise product, IDS's default behavior of boldly going where no one has gone before in your port space at each restart is not the way to play nice in a firewalled, enterprise environment. This should be documented in Adobe's Introduction to InDesign Server in the command line parameter discussions, it would have saved us a lot of time

  • VerticalScale, horizontalScale and transformReferencePoint in InDesign Server JS

    Hi,
    If you scale items using verticalScale or horizontalScale, InDesign will anchor the object to whatever is set in the layoutWindow.transformReferencePoint. InDesign Server does not have layoutWindow. So..
    1)Does InDesign Server always use middle/center as the reference point for horizontalScale/verticalScale? If not..
    2)How can I control the transformReferencePoint in InDesign Server?
    Thanks,
    -Nissan

    Hi Ole!
    This reminds me. I think your scripting documentation and sample scripts are too difficult. :-)
    Likewise, I can't tell whether you're suggesting a workaround here or not. I've just got, you know, something hanging out with the right side at 38.768, and I want it at exactly 37.1, and I don't want to move the left side, and I can't drag the handle where I want it even if I want to, because it only goes to 36.934 or 37.226 argh, and I still don't have a way to simply put it at 37.1(00).
    Failing that, maybe one of you wonderful guys will tell me how to correct this:
    set
    find what
    of
    find text preferences
    to
    set
    change to
    of
    change text preferences
    to
    thin space
    thin space
    change text
    document
    1
    O
    It says it was expecting a string or nothing and I hate to disappoint it, but I found that "thin space" in the dictionary and had the audacity to think I could use it. Which I suppose I can, somewhere, only apparently not here.
    Thanks,
    Roy
    Hi Roy, Dave,
    Actually, that's the difference between the resize and reframe methods in scripting, which mirror the difference between the scale x/scale y and width/height fields in the Control panel. But I agree that the Proxy version was better.:-)

  • Indesign Server CC Trial issues

    The installation instructions states
    You need to download Adobe Provisioning Toolkit Enterprise Edition (APTEE) for using the InDesign Server trial
    The download link only refers to CS6, CS5.5 & CS5 not CC
    Since there is no Adobe Provisioning Toolkit Enterprise Edition for CC I decided just to install and run the trial.
    However I got the Adobe InDesign Server is not properly licensed and will now quit message.
    According to the CC Release notes it says:
    InDesign CC Server needs to be activated before it can be used. If the computer is online, activation is done automatically when you install. You need to provide your Adobe ID, and serial number when prompted by the installer. Unless the software is activated, you'll see an error, "Adobe InDesign Server’ is not properly licensed and will now quit."
    My computer was online yet the it seems it didn't perfom the automatic activation as it suggests. When I entered my AdobeID credentials I did not get any errors saying it could not connect online.
    So I had to do something and decided to use the Adobe Provisioning Toolkit Enterprise Edition for CS6.
    This allowed me to get pass the licensing issue.
    The next problem was I was getting DDE Server Window:InDesignServer.exe System Error popup. Telling me The program can't start because svml_dispmd.dll is missing from your computer.

    So after browsing the net to see where I can get this missing svml_dispmd.dll I found this post http://software.intel.com/en-us/forums/topic/285859
    and decided to install what it suggested.
    I still got the missing dll error so I copied it from C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Intel\Shared Libraries\redist\intel64\compiler into C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CC Server x64
    Now it just sits there and hangs at the same spot

    What the heck is going on here?
    I have installed Indesign Server CC on another machine and although I did not get the missing dll problem it still however hangs at the same spot mentioned above.
    Could someone from Adobe please help. The already I'm losing days with this trial and I will have little days left to test this product.

    I'm having same trial activation difficulties. How have you activated it with APTEE? What leid did you use?
    Thank you.
    UPDATE: Never mind. I found it and activated server by executing:
    "adobe_prtk.exe  --tool=StartTrial --leid=InDesignServer-CS7-Win-GM"
