CS5 Bridge Keywords disappear

I know this has been talked about on the MAC and PC forums for Bridge and has been an issue with CS3 up to CS5.  However, it does not seem to be getting any attention from Adobe.
I have gone through the Mac  and Win forums from CS3 to CS5 and there are multiple listings of people  losing their keywords.  I just lost mine again, after rebuilding them  about two weeks ago.  On another call, 3782474, Paul graciously produced a script to build your existing keywords.  You still have to reenter  them!  Adobe, PLEASE fix this issue.  I copied the keyword file and  saved it to a backup location. When I lost my file this last time, I  restored that file.  It stll did not work!  I have not upgraded any  Adobe products, other Window products or any patches.  The only thing I  have been doing for the last couple of weeks is editing photos and going  from one storage drive to another within Bridge to locate photos.  I'm  afraid if I lose the one that I just recreated manually that I will no  longer use Bridge since this is one of the features that attracts me to  it.  I'm sure there are other products that will provide keyword search.
Adobe, I hope you are reading this thread and take control.  I am running on Windows 7 and Bridge CS5.
Thanks
Bob

Yes I am copying the file /users/bob/appdata/roaming/adobe/bridge cs5/adobebridgekeywords and saving it in a folder on my desktop.  The file is an XML document type.  A sample of a set as it appears in the file is :
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"  standalone="yes" ?>
- <keywords version="2">
>
- <set name="Animals" disclosed="true">
<item name="Antelope" />
<item name="Babies" />
<item name="Bighorn Sheep" />
<item name="Black Bear" />
<item name="Buffalo" />
<item name="Burro" />
<item name="Chipmunk" />
<item name="Colts" />
<item name="Elk" />
<item name="Fawn" />
<item name="Grizzly" />
<item name="Horses" />
<item name="Moose" />
<item name="Pronghorn Antelope" />
<item name="Wolf" />
</set>
When I replace the bad file with this one, it does not work.  If I try importing this file, it will not recognize it.

  • Currently on Production Premium CS4, trialling Photoshop CS5, Bridge CS4 disappears....

    I am waiting on the phone to Customer Services as I type this....
    I thought it'd be a neat idea to trial CS5 Photoshop (I'm currently on Production Premium CS4).
    I did that, and now Bridge CS4 has disappeared.
    I didnt' want that.  And when I go to my Adobe CS4 folder under programs, it shows as Adobe Bridge CS4 but when I click on it, I get Bridge CS5
    How can I restore this ??
    I want to be able to have both installed and the appropriate Bridge to start up depending on whether I'm in CS4 or CS5 (not too much to ask I'd have thought).
    Many thanks,
    Jez

    Thanks Curt, that's really helped and saved me time.  By disabling the feature you mention and exiting Bridge CS5, when I go to Photoshop CS4 and invoke Bridge, I do indeed get Bridge CS4 starting and not CS5.
    Where I was 'going wrong' was keeping Bridge CS5 running minimized in my system tray which is why even Photoshop CS4 would open it up when invoked from within Photoshop.
    Kind regards,
    Jez

  • Transfering from PhotoshopCS3 to CS5 Bridge keywording and rating questions?

    I have been using my daughter's photoshop CS3 on her computer and have keyworded and star rated most of my photos. She is now leaving home and I am going to purchase CS5 (as she will be taking her computer and the program). How do I transfer all these to the new version of CS5? I have spent soooo much time doing this and don't want to have to redo all the hard work.
    I read somewhere that the keywords are embedded in the metadata. If that is so, would I just create the new keywords in the newer version and it will pick them up when I import the photos? I can't seem to find anything about importing star ratings.
    Any suggestions???  I don't want to go ahead and purchase the new program until I know if this will work.

    Keywords are embedded on the image so it is portable no matter what viewer.  So there should be no problem in switching from CS3 to 5, worked for me.
    However, (there always is a however isn't there?) the keyword panel will show italacized keywords meaning they are tempary.  You can right click on the keyword and choose "make persistant".
    If you like the keyword structure on your daughters computer click on the arrow in upper right hand corner of the keyword panel and choose Export.  Save it on a flash drive and you will have it for future use.
    I think the stars will be OK also.
    Hope this helps.

  • CS5 Bridge and Elements

    Hello,
       I happen to have Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0 Plus and Adobe CS5 installed on my desktop.Both programs work fine when using one or the other.My problem is if  I have CS5 Bridge open and highlight a photo that I want to open (right click open or top file menu)the photo opens in Elements 8 Edit.I would think it should open Photoshop 5,but can't seem to find where to change it from.I keep Elements installed because its handleing the photo backups right now.Any suggestions?I'm missing something I'm sure.Thanks.

    My problem is if  I have CS5 Bridge open and highlight a photo that I want to open (right click open or top file menu)the photo opens in Elements 8 Edit.
    Go to Bridge edit/preferences/file type associations and change the defalult program for extenstion to CS5.
    And if you have keywords in Elements they can be read in Bridge, you just have to find the option to write files to metadata.

  • How do I import Bridge keywords and metadata to CS6 from CS4 so that I don't lose them if CS4 is not

    I have hundreds of keywords and metadata including Ratings and Labels using CS4 and Bridge CS4.
    It is time to replace my PPC Mac with a new Intel Mac.
    I am going to install CS6 on the new Intel Mac without installing CS4.
    By default.... this eliminates ALL keywords and ratings and labels from my Bridge browser. The keywords will still be present on the files but Not present in Bridge keywords list and all ratings and labels will be lost.
    Making a copy of Bridge CS4 metadata to another computer is quite simple.
    Simply copy All of the Bridge CS4 application support folder to the other computer.
    The question then becomes.... can I aslo do this with CS6 without introducing an incompatibility?
    1. incompatible due to CS6 application support.
    2. incompatible due to transfer from a PPC (APM) to Intel (GUID).
    This concern results from an Bridge CS4 export problem I experienced.
    Bridge CS4 will export all of your keywords and you can import them from a text file but it has some odd troubles. (try it and you will see)
    This does Not mean that CS6 has the same troubles.
    What do I require to preserve existing metedata and keywords that exist on a PPC using CS4 and import them into CS6 using Intel?
    Sound simple?
    I doubt it.
    The points are.
    1. CS4 not installed.
    2. CS4 source is PPC not Intel.
    3. Ratings and Labels are metadata that Are Not part of the file metadata and unique to Bridge only.
    4. Keyword Search and keyword Use requires that Bridge have keyword list, otherwise Finder is the far more useful browser and the new version of Bridge will require hours of keyword listing.
    I don't want to spends hours retyping keywords lists in Bridge.

    Ratings are NOT placed into the file under CS4 Bridge and neither are
    Labels.
    That depends on your file type and settings voor Camera Raw.
    Like Curt stated usually metadata is written in to the file itself. Only Raw files can't be written to and by default they create a XMP file, also called Sidecar XMP files (and do have the same filename, only a different extension called .xmp). These files are also by default hidden in Bridge but If you use Bridge to move files they travel along with the original.
    If you move or copy them using finder you have to be sure these XMP files are also copied with the originals to the new location.
    Using the menu View / show hidden files should reveal the XMP files.
    An other option for the Camera Raw prefs is to set metadata to the Camera Raw database instead of written to sidecar XMP files ( to my knowledge using sidecar files has been the default since about CS3).
    Now here it becomes a bit tricky and I only can tell you my findings, not to be confused with true facts. (and mind you, it is at least 5 years ago I was on a PPC and not even remember which OSX 10 was able to work on it, I just present the acting of CS6 on an intel Mac Pro with OSX 10.7, but I don't believe the difference in location is that much)
    Having written the Metadata to the Camera Raw Database your image settings get written to a file in the user library preferences folder called logically "Adobe Camera Raw Database". But also some info gets added to the Camera Raw Cache folder (User library / Caches/ Adobe Camera Raw) in a file called index.dat.
    Also not having set metadata to xmp sidecars stores the ACR settings in a new .dat file with a unique number (not to be traced as a corresponding filename. And also the default maximum is set to 1 GB of space and when full the oldest files are overwritten with the new ones.
    Personally I use converted DNG files that are capable of writing metadata to so all info and settings are in the file itself and I don't need to bother about central storage that can get lost. The downside is that changes to a DNG need to save the whole file instead of a small xmp file and probably reading cache takes more time then getting info from central storage but I like to be on the safe side and speed is not really needed to be nailed down to split seconds in my workflow.
    Keywords are stored as a file in the Bridge preferences but Like Curt already stated exporting the old list first and then via the same route import again to CS6 should solve your problem and they will be back as persistent, otherwise the files in the content window show as italic and sadly enough have to be made persistent one by one with right click mouse menu, so that is not really an option for you.
    Exporting the list does create a text file that can also be altered manually with a simple text app and as said, again be imported in newer versions as Curt described earlier.
    Making a copy of Bridge CS4 metadata to another computer is quite simple.
    Simply copy All of the Bridge CS4 application support folder to the other computer.
    Well, in fact it is true to call copying this folders a simple task but replacing the existing new CS6 would not be my method. The biggest change for Bridge CS6 was the transition to 64 bit and I lack the knowledge for this but also cache format for thumbs and previews has been different for every version.
    But if you have located the CS4 folder for Bridge in your PPC user library / application support / Adobe / Bridge CS4 you should find a file called 'Adobe Bridge Keywords.xml' and it is fairly safe to replace this CS4 version with the new CS6 version.
    Also custom settings for the output module can be copied (however to my memory the option for custom settings in Output where introduced in CS5) and collections can be copied.
    So for your keywords the copy option might work, rating and labeling for Raw files they will be read in CS6 if they are stored as XMP. ACR settings idem but CS6 ACR has a new (2012) conversion mode that has different settings that do not work with previous settings (unless you first choose to use the 2010 conversion as default Raw setting.
    If it is in the Central Data Base I would start trying to replace the CS4 with the CS6 edition (after back up of existing CS6 version) and see what happens. If it works your out of trouble.
    You can also open the Camera raw Database as a text file but there is a lot of data in. Maybe scripting would be able to reveal those data and transfer to XMP but you have to visit the dedicated Scripting forum for this.
    And while you state to have not installed CS4 anymore it might be wise to reinstall it (but first make a proper back up of the previous mentioned folders and files to be on the save side.
    This gives you the opportunity to export keywords properly and if needed you can use Show Items from subfolders option with filter and set preferences to XMP sidecar to refresh the rating and labels to those XMP files. Just an escape route that might not be as painstakingly as it looks at first sight, just use the options for Bridge to filter.

  • Bridge keywords not working ....

    I have recently upgraded to Photoshop Cs5 / Bridge CS4. As part of this u/g my system seems to have lost the keywords that were added in the older version.
    I cannot find the .plist file which is where i think this information is held.
    How can I ask Bridge to re-index my catalog?
    Thanks in advance for your help.

    First check in edit/preferences/thumbnails.  You need a check mark in additional lines of metadata for keywords to show.
    Cache for CS4 and CS5 are different so it should automatically re-index.

  • Will CS5 Bridge transfer to Lightroom 3?

    I'm currently using CS5 Bridge and was wondering if I used Lightroom 3 whether all of my information (star ratings, collections, etc.) would easily transfer.  I understand Bridge is "on its way out" in the future and am concerned that my current organizational tools such as mentioned will be lost.

    I haven't heard "Bridge is on it's way out"...but all your metadata (ratings, keywords, etc) should be retained as long as you're saving the metadata with your files and using sidecar files for raw files (if any). I'm not sure how Collections are handled between the two apps. Probably a better question for the Bridge forum:

  • CS6 Bridge always launches CS5 Bridge

    After installing CS6 from Cloud upgrade, when ever I launch Bridge CS6, it always just launches the CS5.x version of Bridge.
    I've tried both 32bit and 64bit with the same results. My other CS6 apps seem to be working fine.
    This occurs no matter which Bridge CS6 icon I use (shortcuts and from the main directory.) Do I need to uninstall CS5 Bridge to get it to work?

    No do not uninstall CS5.
    You have Bridge CS5 running the the background.  Open CS5 Bridge and go to edit/preferences/advanced and uncheck "open Bridge at logon".
    Then open Task Manager and click Processes tab.  Look for bridge.exe and close it.

  • CS6 Beta Modifies CS4 & CS5 Bridge File Associations (W7 Pro 64Bit SP1)

    Symptoms:
    After installing CS6 including bridge CS6 onto a W7 pro 64Bit Machine with SP1.
    The File associations in the existing copies of CS4 and CS5 bridge are updated to make the CS6 Beta the default programme for opening the majority of file types from either CS4 or CS5 bridge.
    When right clicking ona file from CS4/5 bridge only the option of opening in CS6 is presented
    Expected Bahaviour:
    I expected that CS6 would be the default programme launched from CS6 bridge but that CS4/CS5 would remain the default programmes launched from their own versions of bridge.
    Setting CS6 as the default file association in previous versions of bridge makes no sense at the Beta stage, as it interupts a clean migration back to existing workflow.
    I would also question the value in not preserving the existing file associations in prior versions of bridge in the final CS6 release, as there are cases when it might be desirable to go back to a previous version of CS, in which case opening that version of bridge and launching directly into the prior versions of CS is very desirable.
    Is there anyway to quickly restore the previous associations in CS4/CS5 bridge and be sure that they are exactly the same as prior to the CS6 beta install ?

    Sorry for the noise. I misunderstood your depth of knowlege and what you had tried. I also committed the sin of not testing the procedure all the way through because I did not want to change the association on my computer. I get the same behavior.
    Guess for .jpg
    Registry shows for .jpg:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.jpg\UserCho ice  Progid = Applications\Photoshop.exe
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Applications\Photoshop.exe\shell\open\command  (Default) = "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6 (64 Bit)\Photoshop.exe" "%1"
    UserChoice seems to be added when I made the association choice. Note that it points into Applications with a non-version specific Photoshop.exe. Within HKLM\....\Applications there is only one Photoshop.exe -- no version -- and that entry points to CS6.
    I believe that explains why the browsed to association is CS6. It does not explain why it would be set up that way. Probably has something to do with Windows special handling of certain file extensions. Beyond my depth and tells me I am not going to find a solution.

    The CS5 Bridge Tools\Photoshop Menu Options that contain the Image Processing / Photomerge / HDR Pro features that open images from Bridge into Photoshop isn't working ... has this happened to anyone else?  Have you any ideas how to fix this?
    I've cleared cache, windows temp files, and moved the majority of my files to my NAS drive, so the laptop (Window 8 64-bit) is fine ... or so it seems!

    Did you have to uninstall everything and reinstall 2014? CC 2014 was installed automatically. My program files show Ps CC and Ps CC 2014. The automatic installation of 2014 is what caused the problem.

    I did that in the Terminal and shortly after that the crashes started for me.

    Not saying that's anything other than a coincidence.

  • Bridge Keywords driving me nuts! Please help......

    I've been directed here by the good people at Elements Village as I have a Bridge specific question that you guys may be able to help with.
    I've been using Bridge (CS3, I think) with PSE V4 Mac for several years and have multiple and extensive keywords applied to all my tens of thousands of photos.
    I've upgraded to PSE V8 Mac with Bridge CS4. The PSE side of things is fine now. But my Bridge keywords are completely screwed up. With some technical help I've been able to copy my keyword tree from one version to the other. But the problem is that although Bridge is reading my existing keywords, it's throwing them up out of sync, in different parents and in multiples of each keyword. So whereas I had created "All Kids" child keyword under "People" parent in my old version, in the new version "All Kids" appears twice - once as a new parent and again as a child under "Activities", as well as under the original "People" parent. I can't delete the extras as this will remove the tags from all of these photos. I can't move into the "People" parent as there is already a category there and I although I can deselect the incorrect "All Kid" tags and only select the child keyword in the correct place, when I search again on this keyword, it chucks them all up again, with multiple "All Kids" checked. Furthermore, not all photos that I've tagged with All Kids have all three "All Kids" keywords selected, some only have one or t'other tagged.
    Obviously, I can make persistant one or both of the new "All Kids" keywords, but neither are in the correct place in my tree and neither will allow me to move them.
    This has happened with ALL my existing keywords - multiple copies, in multiple locations.
    I've tried resetting the Bridge preferences.
    I've tried going through them keyword by keyword and deselecting the new, out of place keyword and re-selecting the correct keyword - to no avail. When I search again, new out of place keywords are thrown up.
    I've tried going back to the new install basic keyword list and re building my keyword tree, but the minute I put in a search, out of place keywords are thrown up that I can't move into the correct parent.
    I've tried starting again with my keyword system - I imagine this will take months and months and there simply HAS to be an easier way to do this.
    I've read and re-read the online manual at Adobe and can find nothing that deals specifically with upgrading versions. As a fairly experienced Bridge user I'm aware of it's powers and am so disappointed that this is proving to be such as stumbling block. When I upgraded my Lightroom last year the move from one version to the next was totally seemless. And after minor teething trouble with the PSE side of things, that upgrade was also pretty straight forward, but this Bridge issue is really frustrating and I'm wondering whether to abandon this upgrade and go back to using Bridge CS3 (which is still installed and is saving my sanity work wise).
    So, please, PLEASE, does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with this?
    Thanking you in advance.
    PS: I'm not super technical so need serious spoon feeding through this!

    Hi Will
    Okay, I think I get. That is -if and when- my KW's never come up
    again, I have Bridge on a goose chase for a (junk) word. Now when I
    place a word in Bridge search box, Bridge will use it's own quotation
    marks around your entry word and look for that.
    What I mean is, you are not using some kind of Bridge power search
    characters for this search that I might not be aware of.
    For example, junk, or NOT=junk, or /junk/
    One thing that is driving me a bit nutty right now is, after getting
    all my old KW's to display by clicking on the image file days ago,
    Bridge placed them all under the hierarchy of "Other Keywords",
    meaning my directory structure was lost and every kw ended up under
    this new heading.
      I went and built new category heading for my many KW's and then,
    click and moved these under the new headings and then made permanent
    all of these KW.
    My frustration is now, that Bridge does not respect the fact that I
    moved them to different location. That is they are made permanent in
    that new location. But when I relaunch Bridge, and my new KWs
    organization comes up, it all looks fine. Click on any picture and
    Bridge places the old KW in Italics that were listed under Other
    Keywords and throws them in Alphabetical order through out my list,
    as if the move is not respective. So I now have two key words for
    ever one KW wanted.
    I understand that if you take someone else folder and place it on
    your system and open an image that those key words might best be down
    under the heading Other Keywords or in italics, and that you would
    not want Bridge to automatically be messing with your own Key Words
    structure.
    But I moved these keywords, and bridge does not respect that having
    been made, and how I want those KW's displayed on my page. The KW
    list get vary long and confusing to look at with words out of place
    everywhere amongst my new list. Sometimes you get confused  which
    ones you are suppose to use when new images are brought in.
    it is a laborious frustrating process to clean those italic migrant
    keywords out to clean up the house so to speak.
    you have to find all presence of that kw
    select all those images,
    deselect them, sometimes reselect then so that you can deselect them
    to get them all
    then delete those italic KW
    then check the box so that all those images have only that KW under
    the heading you want permanent.
    My machine seems to manage these small word pieces of data
    exceedingly slow. So I may have to wait for a minute or longer  for
    the list to update.
    It seems this will take days. and the list could go "poof" again for
    all i know.
    Thanks again for your comments!

  • How can I use the templates I generated in CS5 Bridge, in Lightroom 4.4?

    How can I use the templates I generated in CS5 Bridge, in Lightroom 4.4 ?
    It appears that I can not link the templates which I have been using in Bridge for some time to Lightroom 4.4.
    Is this done on purpose?
    Thanks in advance
    Doppy

    I assume these are metadata templates?
    in Bridge, apply a template to an image which has no other metadata (eg a dummy image ) and then import the image into Lightroom, ensuring no metadata applied in the Import dialog. Now in Lightroom's Metadata panel, save the metadata as a new Metadata Preset.
    Repeat for each template.

  • Why can't I do batch actions from CS4 or CS5 Bridge now when I could before?

    Something has changed in my functions for doing batch actions in Bridge.  In CS5 Bridge I try to do a simple batch action of saving a DNG file as a jpg and closing the file.  When I attempt this I get a message saying 'The command "Save" is currently not available.
    I try to do the same thing in CS4 Bridge.  I go to the Tools menu and look for Photoshop in the drop down menu but it's not there.  This is how I do batch action processing with my Windows version of CS4 Bridge.  I am confused about what has changed when I was able to do batch actions routinely in CS4 and CS5 Bridge on my Mac.

    Something has changed in my functions for doing batch actions in Bridge.  In CS5 Bridge I try to do a simple batch action of saving a DNG file as a jpg and closing the file.  When I attempt this I get a message saying 'The command "Save" is currently not available.
    Batch using tools menu from Bridge to reach Photoshop should work as expected in both CS4 and CS5. If not then there is something wrong on either your system or install.
    Go to Bridge CS5 preference and look for the section Start Up Scripts and see if there is still a Start Up Script for Photoshop CS5 present and with a checkmark in front for activation. If not try first to restart bridge holding down option key and choose refresh preferences. This should retrieve the original Start Up scripts again.
    If your command save as is not available check the action and see what the save path for that acton is. If it is a copied action from an other system changes are that it still contains the save path for the old drive and if the script can't find it it provides a warning message.
    Also check if the drive you save to has both read and write permission.
