CS5: TOC Question

I'm trying to set up my table of contents for a book document. Below is a screenshot of the TOC as it is right now.
The TOC looks fine, I guess, but the elements are not in order. The three headings (System Introduction, Overview, and Chapter 1) are not in the same order as on the page. I want the Chapter 1 heading to come before System Introduction. It does so on the Chapter cover pages:
Chapter 1 is a specific paragraph style in a text frame by itself. System Introduction and all the other following text share a text frame. System Introduction is a specific paragraph style. Meanwhile, Overview shares its style with that of a specific heading (the blue elements on the TOC image), since I want all of those elements to appear in the same style and positioning on the TOC.
Here is what my TOC settings look like:
I have the Chapter # style (the style applied to Chapter 1 in the above screenshot) as the first item in the TOC. I want it to share the positioning and style of the Chapter Title, but I don't want a page number for it. All other styles have a page number position assigned with a leader, and they are positioned at the correct level. I just don't understand why the Chapter # style is appearing in such an odd place in the TOC.

Well, the TOC harvests character styles for inclusion in a really regular, top-to-bottom, left-to-right order. It's not looking for styles as it does so, but for frames. If the blue guides show where the Chapter 1 frame begins and ends, and if the rest of the text is in a frame that takes up the entire page within the margins, then of course the TOC is finding the main-body-text frame before it finds the Chapter 1 frame, becuse the main body text frame is closer to the top left than the Chapter 1 frame.

  • Upgraded to CS5; TOC Links don't work in the created PDF from InDesign

We recently upgraded to CS5. When we convert our InDesign User Guide to PDF, the main TOC links don't work. The TOC does function from each chapter page but not from the main TOC. We have done our normal steps in Acrobat to link them. Same issue with various user guides that we have. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

Thanks for your reply. The problem is the whole page is one image and there should be several clickable areas which point to different links.
To solve this we have put a textbox over the clickable area, disabled the background and stroke and then right clicked on the textbox and used the hyperlink option to turn the whole box in to a hyperlink.
We tried several free PDF convertors which couldn’t handle this combination. Then we trailed it with the full desktop version of Adobe Acrobat Pro and it worked a treat. Unfortunately the client didn’t have that software so we signed them up to the online PDF convertor from Adobe and that isn’t handling it.
Here's the sample document: Dropbox - sample-link.docx we have been doing the tests with.

  • Upgrade from CS2 to CS5 multi-questions

    A few questions actually..
I very recently just bought an upgrade from Photoshop CS2 to CS5. Everything went well but I don't understand a few, possibly trivial, things.
During the installation process, I in no way had to supply information about my CS2 licence to prove that I even have it. How do you guys make sure that someone who doesn't own a previous version of Photoshop isn't saying that they want an upgrade, thus avoiding the full price of the product?
Also, when you upgrade, does your old previous version license become deactivated? Are you suppossed to remove it from your computer or some other process?
Lastly, when I downloaded the upgrade, I downloaded both CS5 for 32 and 64 bit by default as they were both there. Do I need both on my computer and what's the difference between using/having the two?
I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit to clarify.
    Thanks in advance!

If you purchased and upgrade then it should ask for a qualifying serial number.  It is also possible you purchased an upsell which means you were basically given a copy of the full version at a discounted price.  The qualification process is done when you purchase the software.
You can continue to use your CS2 license.  You can not however sell it as it is qualifying you to utilize CS5.
For questions about 64-bit I would recommend reviewing http://blogs.adobe.com/scottbyer/2006/12/64_bitswhen.html

  • PS CS5 Updates Question

Hello There. I'm sure this question has been  asked before.... I am not able to get Updates in my PS CS5. It keeps showing error. U43M1D207. Anyone know how to fix this? TY!

The Adobe auto updater was utterly unreliable in versions prior to CS6, which is when the hapless updater team began to get its act together.
You're going to have to late, download and run the update manually yourself.
    Product updates
You may have to apply all updates successively, i.e. first 12.0.1, then 12.0.2, 12.0.3 and 12.04.  Not sure of that.

  • New in Premiere Pro CS5. Questions: markers, shortcuts, keyframes, and more!

Hi everyone, this is my first post. I'm an editor from Argentina, with background in Avid media Composer, but I'm switching to premiere pro cs5 for a new job. I was highly and happily surprised with it. But, there's still a couple of things I haven't quite got right, yet.
So, a couple of newbie questions... you'll save me a lot of time if you can answer some of them.
    Markers
1a. Can I use markers with different colors?
1b. Is there a way to select more than one marker and delete them at the same time? Of course, with out deleting all of them, just the ones I need.
1c. How can I set up a shortcut for going to next\previous clip marker in the timeline? In shortcuts, I go to Marker>Go go Clip marker> and select a shortcut, but in the timeline it goes nowhere. I have made this work for sequence markers in the timeline, and this shortcut also work for going next\previous marker on a clip in the source monitor.
1d. How can I extend a marker in the timeline? I know I can set the duration of the marker in the pop up menu... but if there a way to do it directly in the timeline?
    Razor Tool
    2. A simple one. After I've used the razor tool on a clip... how can I join the clip again?
    Track Select Tool
    3. Can the Track Select Tool, select all the clips to the LEFT, instead of all the clips to the right? In avid there's a Select Right command, which works as the track selector, but there's also a Select Left command, which does the same, but to the left.
    Audio Master Meters
4.Another simple one. Can I put this in a horizontal way? It'll fit perfectly in the tool bar then.
    Tab sizes
5.Can the tab size be modified? I have "Media browser", "Info", "History", "Effects" all docked... but the size of the panel is such that I can never see the four tabs at once, I have to drag the little bar at the top. Can I have the tabs be smaller so that I can see the four of them... as if they said "Media.." "inf.." "hist".."eff"... instead of wasting space with long tab names?
    Keyframes
    6. Is there a shortcut to add one? Where is it in the shorcut configuration? I know I can put them with the Pen Tool, I need a shortcut to replace the "add/remove keyframe" button on the tracks in the timeline.
6b.How can I snap the current time indicator to a shortcut in the timeline?
6c. Can I lazo multiple keyframes?
    Audio While Scrubbing
    7. In Preferences>Audio>Play Audio While Scrubbing I can select that on and off. How can I set a shortcut for that?
Well... that was A LOT! Sorry for so many questions. Hopefully they can help other new users.

    From the top:
1a. No; but you can set numbered markers, for both clips and the sequence.
1b. No; you can delete one or all.
1c. You have to select the clip in order to activate the command.
1d. You can only do this in the Marker dialog.
    2. No direct way to do this. Delete either the portion before or after the edit, and then extend the clip to fill the gap. Clunky, yes.
    3. No, the Track Select tool only operates to the right.
    4. Audio meters are vertical only.
    5. The tab size matches the title of the tab; no way to change this.
    6a. No keyframe shortcut.
6b. It doesn't work in the Timeline panel, but in the Effects Controls panel, you can hold down Shift to snap the CTI as you drag.
6c. You can lasso multiple keyframes in the Effects Controls panel with the standard selection tool, or you can use the Pen tool in the Timeline panel. Just be sure to start within the graphical representation of the clip.
    7. No, it's only a program preference.
Sorry that so many of them are negative! Be sure to file feature requests for anything that you'd like to see: Adobe Feature Request/Bug Report Form

  • CS5 Indesign question

I have a question about CS 5 Indesign, When I go to print a document, I cannot get the option for a certain line screen when the color is on composite.
When I have it on separation , I am able to put it on any line screen. I called the support line and no one was able to help me. Please if anyone knows how to fix this let me know. Thanks

An exact answer depends on the exact wording of your question.
"Are CS5 and CS6 files compatible with each other?" NO.
But a longer, and more accurate, answer is "They are, up to a certain point and with proper precautions."
    1. You cannot open a 6 file in '5 or earlier. To be able to, save your file as IDML -- that *can* be opened by earlier versions, at least one or two. (Saving back to a CS3 compatible format, for example, takes more effort and a working CS4.)
    2. When saving as IDML, the file ought to open exactly as it was with the original version. If there were any new features used in the file, they will be (silently!) ignored by older versions.
    3. Due to code changes, there might be a change in text flow. Nothing you can do about it, text is always reformatted according to the internal rules of the version you open it with.
    4. Older version files ought to open right away in a newer version. "Ought to", because the latger the difference in version, the larger chances *something* might fail. Apart from that, the text might also reflow, as per point 3.
So you see, the correct answer to "are they compatible. depends more on how much time you have to answer it.

  • TOC Questions portrait view

I see the TOC is based on the chapter titles of the book, I also see that you can change the styles and I need to know the following.
Is there a way to add any other text to the titles for instance:
chapter 1 - is the title ( which displays in the TOC)
either an image ( for each chapter) as I see if I do that the image appears in all.
    OR
another text box in each chapter with different text?
    R

If I understand your  question, looking at the image you can see I changed section to have a title of Hope & Crosby and this will show in the TOC.
You can re-name the Book Title, Chapters and Sections in the book tree simply by mousing over to select and re-type your names.
What you change there is reflected in the TOC
The default text boxes for these are what appers in the TOC.
    As it apears in TOC
    Hope that helps..

  • Illustrator CS5 perspective questions

I recently upgraded to CS5 and was playing with the perspective tools and a couple of questions came up. Is it possible to change the perspective and have objects already created update to the new persp? Also, I noticed strokes don't follow the perspective, ie, getting thinner as they get farther away.

You have valid questions. I used this feature briefly, when I first switched to AICS5 and had similar questions. One thing you can try is; While using the Perspective Selection tool, hold down "5" and move objects perpendicular to perspective plane.
You might also want to experiment with using symbols on perspective planes. Blends will then appear in perspective and it's easier to edit the object by editing the flat symbol. To get lines to appear in perspective you may need to outline them. Maybe someone else has a better idea. It appears "mesh distortion" objects will not work on perspective planes.

  • InDesign CS6/CS5 compatibility question

I need to know if users in InDesign CS5 will be able to successfully work in an InDesign file I create and save back from CS6. I was told by someone at Adobe that these 2 versions were NOT compatible at all, even though I was told by another Adobe employee that you can save back 1 version with no issues.  What is correct?  And... if we ALL upgrade to CS6, will we be able to open up files we created in CS5 or earlier with no issues?  The guy that said they were totally incompatible sent me this link:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/indesign/buying-guide-version-comparison.html
So I need a definitive answer - can we, or can we not, exchange between CS5 and CS6???  Thank you.

  • Idle TOC Question

Idle question...can you change the font color (and font, for that matter if you wish to use something besides Arial which neither the client nor I wish to do) in the TOC and the index in a compiled  help file?
The topics use a customized color for the default font and it'd be really, really cool if the TOC and index could have the same color.
If you can do this, where and how?
    Thanks!
    Jo

    Hi Jo.
You can change the font, font size and font colour by clicking on the Advanced Settings button inside the Microsfoft HTML Help single source layout properties. This dialog has two tabs "Index" and "TOC Styles" from which the Select Font button allows you to change the font characteristics.

  • HD Sony Camcorder ACVHD file and Win CS5.5 question

I am thinking of upgrading to an HD Camcorder.  I am looking at models from Sony, Canon and Panasonic. One of the models I am looking at is the Sony HDR CV700V.  My questions: #1 Can Premiere Pro 5.5 handle Sony ACVHD files and specifically 1080P/60P files?  I have heard that 1080P/60P is nonstandard ACVHD.  Sony's website says that Sony AVCHD files cannot be imported into computers.  I have searched everywhere and I cannot find the answer.  There is no point in buying this camcorder if I cannot import ACVHD files into CS5.5.  #2 If there are file limitations specific to Sony's 1080p ACVHD is there another camcorder that does not have this problem such as Canon Vixia HG G10 or Panasonic HDC-TM 900. #3 Of the 3 manufacturers, Sony, Canon and Panasonic, does anyone have a recommendation as to which HD Camcorder ACVHD files work best with Win CS5.5?

I use PPro on a Mac instead of Windows, but the computing platform is irrelevant for your question.  I'm with Harm: Sony's statement is pure bunk.  I have 2 Sony Handycams that cut to AVCHD, and all I do is remove the SD card from the camera, then pop it into a card reader on my Mac.  Then I copy the entire filesystem over, and voila: I can edit it in PPro.
If the camera you're looking at doesn't cut to SD but instead to its own internal drive, then you'll need to connect the camera itself to the computer via USB.  It should appear to your computer as a removable drive, allowing you to copy the files over.

  • Basic TOC questions

    Hi everyone.
With InDesign CC, is it still necessary to build the TOC in the last page of the document?
Once a toc is built, if the document is updated, does the toc update automatically or does it need to be rebuilt?
If in an .indb, does Synchronization rebuild the toc?
    Thanks

You can generate a TOC on any page you like. At the start of a document it's called a Table of Contents.
at the end of documents you're more likely to find an index - as per formats of books in general.
And no updating the page numbering does not update the TOC when sychronised.
You have to use the Layout>Update Table of Contents
I think you would benefit from a few books
It's not CC but will get you going

    These will really help you.
It's not great to be firing random questions at a forum - probably best if you took some lessons or time yourself to learn the different areas
If you're still stuck there's no problem in coming back to ask for direction.
At the moment I think you need to take a step back.
When I was learning InDesign I found having InDesign books on my desk was far faster and a better way of learning the software.
    But it's up to you

  • CS5 - TOC not coming in correctly

I have a document where the TOC is not coming in according to the document layout. Sub-headers are out of order (based on placement in document) and I have sub-headers showing up under Headers they don't belong.
I have removed all sub-headers and re-inserted them. I have removed all instances of Anchored Objects. Neith fixed the problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks ~ Karyn

Since the TOC is based on styles, make sure you don't have any styles that are mis-applied. One way this can happen is described as follows:
Here's a screenshot of a fake document with a few styles and a TOC. The red is the title, which I want in the TOC, and the green is the subtitle, which I don't. I have the cursor set on the subtitle, which you can see in the paragraph styles pallet.
I have built the TOC that you can see in the first screenshot with the specs you can see in the second. I have a style for the Title (red) Subtitle (green) one for the TOC head,  one for the TOC body and Basic Paragraph for the body (which you really don't want to use, by the way, which I can explain if you need). The title style is the only one that will be gathered for the TOC entries.
Here, I have deleted the paragraph return that separates the title from the subhead. This can sometimes happen if you aren't careful. Notice that the style is listed as Title, but the text retains the look of the subhead.
Here, I have put the paragraph return back, but notice that the style still reads "Title" (but with the + that indicates local overrides). By removing the paragraph return, the Title style is applied to the subhead, because they were part of the same paragraph, and you can only have one paragraph style for any given paragraph. Hitting the return key hasn't changed the style, so it's still set to Title, and the + shows because the local overrides weren't stripped out by combining the paragraphs. You might not even notice visually that anything has changed, except in this case, I have used a space-after on the subhead that is missing on the title.
Now, when I re-generate the TOC, the subhead is included, because even though it looks like the subhead, it's actually the title with local overrides. By re-applying the subhead style to the subhead while holding the Option key, I can remove the local overrides and apply only those aspects that I have defined into the style itself. This can also be done from the fly-out triangle of the styles pallet to any text that is selected with the type tool, or to any text within text frames selected with the Selection tool (and probably for the whole document with a script, but since I don't write scripts, I can 't say that for sure, but probably).
Now that the local overrides are removed, I can re-generate the TOC once again and only show the title. This may not be what is causing your TOC to fail, but you might want to go through and see if your styles are applied correctly and then generate your TOC again. It's usually best to avoid local overrides when possible, and not at all if it's practical.

  • Photoshop CS5 extended question

IS photoshop CS5 a program on its own... with 'extended' as a sort of.. add on to it?
so i mean like.. if you don't have CS5 standard, and you buy CS5-extended, will you be able to use it, or will u have to buy the standard version with it?
if not, then why is it that many sites are selling photoshop extended and such low prices.. around 1-400 pounds?

The Extended version has more features.

  • Toc question & screen writing on tablet

Hi, I'm currently running the demo and doing some research for a client to determine if Captivate has the functionality they need.
They have previously used another application with which they could 'write' on screen using a tablet pc & pen. This enabled them to highlight items during a presentation & write simple notes that might be appropriate to a slide.
Is this possible with Captivate? I'm guessing it can be done using the built in software on a tablet pc & simply recording the presentation using Captivate?
Another issue is the table of contents that is generated. Is there any way to wrap the items so if the toc contains lengthy titles they drop onto the next line? Also, is it possible to customise the toc menu styling even more than the various styles available (ie: using css or another method)?

I have found that if the user hovers their mouse over the title in the TOC it will show the entire title. Also, you can create sub text in the TOC.
