CSS 11050 SYN Attacks and auto-reboot

Running software version 5.00 build 2 to load balance two web servers. The DOS log shows SYN attack activity--with one incident logging 62 "attacks". I read that if this value reaches a threshold, then the machine will reboot. Can someone tell me what the guidelines are for this? Are there any other events that can cause the switch to auto reboot? Thanks!

First, you should definitely upgrade.
5.0(2) is VERY VERY OLD.
Next, a box never reload by itself on purpose or because it reached a certain threshold.
If there is an auto-reboot, this means the box crash and this is not normal.
Gilles.

  • Forefront TMG detected a possible SYN attack and will protect the network accordingly

Hi ,  Some times here internet is not working for using through TMG 2010. but Local Host Internet is working. then it should restart the
Microsoft Forefront TMG Control with related Services. then again users can access the Internet  through TMG.
I check the Event Viewer in Server. it shows below Error Log.
Forefront TMG detected a possible SYN attack and will protect the network accordingly
    what should for this ?
    Regards, COMDINI

    Hello,
An offending host attempts to flood Forefront TMG with half-open TCP connections by sending numerous TCP SYN messages to a Forefront TMG server and not completing the TCP handshake, leaving the TCP connections half-open.
Please enable logging to identified this hosts and then check if it is infected by viruses or malware programs.
Please see the value of the number of Maximum half-open TCP connections in Flood Mitigation settings for more information.
Once your problem is solved, you have to see "Forefront TMG is no longer experiencing a SYN attack." message.

  • CSS false syn attack behavior

    Hi all,
We are having an issue with our CSS11501,version sg0810106.
our web app is using alot of web requests (up to one every 15 seconds )
for some reason occasionally our session is being dropped, and we can't connect for few minutes.
i just found out that the source ip address of the client is showed as a source for "syn attack" when i issue "show dos".
does the CSS block my legitimate traffic as suspected syn attack?
if so how can i work around it?
why does it pick it as syn attack how can i improve its false detection?
Can anyone help me with this?
    thanks,
    Lior

    Thanks Gilles,
Indeed the CSS doesn't block anything (I wish it would have been more explicit in the documents, except writing that the dos feature cannot be disabled).
However It was a problem that caused by the CSS and I write this here just in case someone else will encounter the same.
I use CSS for many years now, but this is the first time that i used it on a very connection intensive application and in such an envirounment, and this is why the issue became a visible problem.
CSS and ASA was connected on the same network, with the CSS interface configured as a default gateway on the hosts.
However the CSS sends ICMP redirects packets to the hosts injecting a "better" route to different external IP addresses using the ASA interface IP address. That cause connections from different IP addresses to be blocked for a period of 10 minutes (default time that an ICMP redirect injected route will stay in the routing table of windows server2003) because the routing table on the host has a "better" route which is not the CSS's interface.
Together with the fact that I was using sticky session content rule based on sticky-srcip, that caused an outage for 10 minutes for different IP addresses on a regular basis.
I have sorted it out by disabling icmp Redirect on the windows hosts registry:
    "\\HKLM\system\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\"
change EnableICMPRedirect to "0" by default its "1"
reboot the hosts, and you will see an immediate drop in syn attack indications on the CSS, hinting that the problem has been solved.
I read somewhere that there's an option to disable ICMP redirect packets from the CSS as well, but the other trick did that for me.
Thanks again gilles for your enlightment

  • Solaris 8 in ultra 2 got panic and auto reboot when install Oracle software

    Dear all,
I installed Solaris 8 by selecting 'Entire Solaris Software Group' and select 32 bit support only in an old ultra II machine. Then I tried to install Oracle 8.1.7 in the same machine but machine always got panic and started auto reboot when Oracle installed about 17% or 20% or even 70% (I tried install the minimum of Oracle).
What is the problem? Anyone can help?
    Thanks in advance,
    Vicky

I think you need to check the parameters like SHMMAX etc in /etc/system file as recommanded by oracle if not already added you need to add them .Oracle manuals have a list of these parameters and don't forget to reboot and boot with boot -r after adding these parameters.
Make sure you have sufficient memory or some patch recommanded by Oracle .

  • CSS wrongly reports SYN attacks

    Hi all,
in our environment we have a CSS 11800 which is connected to 3 servers which are all running the same
services. Every night there is a log rotation and therefor the services are taken down one by one.
The CSS forwards traffic to the service even if it's down.
From the time the sevice is down i can see always a huge amount of SYN attacks reported in the traplog.
The reason for this is that the server sends a RST for every SYN request (which is normal as the port
    is down).
We are running on SW version 5.00 build 63.
Can you tell me how long it takes until the CSS detects the service as down and if there is a newer release which maybe detects a RST as a valid response to a SYN and therefor doesn't report a SYN attack.

I don't see why you do not shutdown the service manually during maintenance ?
Regarding how fast the CSS detect a service down it depends on the sort of keepalive you have configured.
If you are using icmp keepalive the CSS may still believe the service is active if it continues to respond to ping.
Again the fastest way for the CSS to detect a service down is to configure it be down.
No release will accept the RST.
This is your job to make sure the CSS does not forward traffic to a service down.
    Gilles.

  • 2011 Macbook Pro Retina Blackouts and constant Auto-Reboots

Hey guys, thanks for your time to look this through since you are my last hope before I drive 320 miles to Apple Store in Chicago with 14inches of heavy snow under my car...
Here is the case: it happened today that my computer would automatically go blackout, then auto-reboots itself. It happened multiple times that I can't do anything on it. And after its auto-reboots, the screen would go black. If I click the volume keys, or power key, I can still hear the sound of them, but the screen would keep black and the computer is actually working. Thus I have to hard-reboot it by pressing the power button for seconds. But even I enter the OS system, after some seconds it just happens again and again, both on the Mac OS Maverick, and my Bootcamp Win7, no matter the power adpater is plugged or not.
The weirdest thing is: I am now connecting the computer to my Viewsonic monitor, and the computer works perfectly: no blackout, no auto-reboots.
I went to the campus authorized Apple retailer, and the techician told me there is nothing he could do since he is not authorized to diagnose the problem since we both thought it is the hardware problem(on both systems.)
I have tried to reset my PRAM and SMC but none of them works. I haven't found anyone who has the same problem online, and thought my experience might helps someone who has it. And I hope we can figure it out before I drive to Chicago in such a horrible weather...
Thank you so much for your concern and help!

  • IOS 8.02 update cause iPad Air to auto reboot while playing games and always 'No Sim installed' appears

I have updated my iPad 3 and iPad air to the latest update iOS 8.02 sinice a week ago. The iPad 3 is okay while the ipad air is having problems. Firstly it randomly auto reboots and apps auto shuts as well. Secondly the 'No Sim installed' always appears while using the iPad. Anyone having the same problem please advise how to solve these problems. Thanks.

Using the battery level meter in this manner is comparable to using your car's fuel gauge to calculate miles per gallon. The only thing that matters is the total amount of operating time from full charge to auto-shutdown.
Use the wall-mount charger that came with the iPad and charge overnight.  Do NOT use an iPod/iPhone charger.  Do NOT use a computer's USB port.  Then, operate it normally until auto shut-down (ignore any low level alerts that may appear).  An irony is that doing that test to determine the total operating time is also the procedure necessary to calibrate the battery level meter.
I'm not claiming that you do not have a problem.  I am stating, however, that we don't yet know.  If the above test does, in fact, indicate a problem, read this.
    Also, according to Apple:
    Use Your iPad Regularly
For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).
Elsewhere, Apple elaborates and explains that two half-discharges (or four quarter-discharges, etc.) equals one full discharge.

  • My 6th Generation Nano Shuts down my Thinkpad, I've tried uninstalling iTunes, turning off auto sync'ing and restoring my ipod, but every time I plug in my iPod, my whole pc goes blue and then reboots in safe mode. Please Help. Thanks.

My 6th Generation Nano Shuts down my Thinkpad, I've tried uninstalling iTunes, turning off auto sync'ing and restoring my ipod, but every time I plug in my iPod, my whole pc goes blue and then reboots in safe mode. Please Help. Thanks.

    Hello kidmango,
I am going to have to agree with planb77. Look into other drivers in your computer causing the issue, not just the nano's drivers.
It is possible that security software is the culprit. Use this:
    iTunes: Troubleshooting security software issues
You may have to restore your computer to a previous point. From before the issue started. Contact computer manufacture or Windows for steps, or do a search with a search engine.
I would test the ipod on a known good computer to see if its the ipod is the issue. My gut says no. You can set a reservation at an Apple Retail Store. Apple.com/retail .You can also test a known good ipod on your computer.
    Hope this helps.

  • ASA5505, SYN attack, ISP and IPS module

Our 5505 is currently being hit by a SYN attack from surprise, surprise, China.  The attack easily brings down the 5505 by hitting the 10,000 connection limit of the box.  I am currently using the shun command to try to mitigate the problem but it is not much help.  It converts the 10,000 connections into 12-15k dropped packets per second which doesn't crash the box but pretty much makes it unusable.
I have seen some examples on using service policies to set connection and embryonic limits but I don't think they will work for me because the attacks come from several IPs and use several different ports.  The attacks don't seem to be pinpointing any particular server or service.  Seems like just basic DoS of our service.  Besides, the feedback from people who have tried this doesn't seem too convincing.
    So I have two questions:
    1) My ISP is unwilling and/or unable to do anything.  They suggest I email the abuse mailbox from the offending ISP.  Just for grins, I did send an email and it promptly came back marked "mailbox full" which is quite funny I thought.
    2) Will adding the IPS module help here?  I am hoping that the processing of the dropped packets would move to the module and leave the main processor of the ASA free to do its usual NAT and firewall functions.
Any and all advice is welcome.
    Thanks,
    Diego

    Hi Diego,
As Julio mentioned, info has to be there. Do you have the 'show xlate' when the issue was seen? In such cases, along with xlate table, you can check connection for hosts making unusual number of connections (show connection count/show connection all). Here are few useful commands in such scenarios:
show local-host connection udp 100-10000          << Gives host with total UDP connections b/w 100-1000
show local-host connection tcp 100-10000          << Same info for hosts making TCP connections
show local-host connection embryonic 100-10000    << hosts with 100-1000 embryonic connections
Change the range as per need.

  • SNMP - Scan and Syn Attack OIDs

    Hello support community,
Im looking for snmp oids for scan and syn attack, im trying to build a graph with cacti that would represent a historical with DOS and scan attacks. I have looked MIB and i dont see anything jumping at me about these OIDs. Can you please help me on finding these?
    Thanks,

I opened a casa with TAC, and they stated that these oids are not supported. I thought i would post my findings here incase anyone else was looking for them.

  • Xperia V Auto-Reboot / Auto Turn-Off - And terrible HK Xperia Care service

I am an owner of Xperia V (Black) and recently, the phone turns itself off automatically OR it reboots itself automatically whenever I use it for, say, around 15 minutes. It only happens when a SIM card is in the phone - it doesn't happen when, say, the SIM card is removed and I am only using WiFi to go on the internet. I use a 4G LTE card from PCCW Mobile in Hong Kong but in fact trying another 3G card there is the same issue. The most terrible thing is what I have so far experienced from the Hong Kong Xperia Care Centre in Mong Kok. I have brought my Xperia V for repair for already the third time and it has been the same issue which still persists! The first time (having waited for a week before the phone "allegedly" got repaired), the Xperia Care centre told me that they have changed the motherboard of the phone and things would be ok. But - no - just when I tested the phone before the Xperia Care guy, the phone turned itself off immediately when I was doing the Set Up procedure. Instead of having the phone back for further checking, the Xperia Care guy told me that it would be an issue with the PCCW Mobile SIM Card, and asked me to go to a PCCW shop to change for another SIM card. I did it, and it does NOT work and have to go back.I went back the second time the next day, and told the people that this is my second time of repairing the phone. The Xperia Care centre person then asked me whether I brought the "charger" of the phone so they can check the charger as well. I have no clue why this problem is related to the charger and why I am told to come back another time. I insisted to put down the phone for repair and in the end they accepted. Another week has passed, I got back the phone from Xperia Care centre. I was told they gave me a new battery for the phone. But, within 5 minutes of using the phone with my SIM card in (bearing in mind this is a new SIM card), the phone turned off AGAIN - despite having 9x% battery level!! It keeps turning off. I am so so so frustrated. I was stupid because I had already left the Xperia Care centre so wasn't able to show the guy the problem. But I just don't understand why the Xperia Care repair guy don't realise this problem - as long as they played with the phone for 5-10 minutes they would have discovered the problem. Now the phone is being repaired for the third time. I said that, given this phone seems to be unrepairable - I should be getting a new one instead of coming back for another 4th or 5th time!!! Unfortunately, the staff told me that this is impossible and they can only exchange parts for me.Sony, could you PLEASE make sure that this phone is getting well repaired before you return it to me??!! I am really sick of going to the repair centre for so many times and if this happens to again, I think I am going to swear I will never buy a Sony phone ever again. It's 3 weeks that I'm deprived of my Xperia phone to use!!

hi zeefung and anyone else,     any interest to go Consumer Council to complain Sony Mobile for this unrepairatble auto reboot / auto turn off case?? https://www.facebook.com/sonymobilehk/posts/10151551299574699?comment_id=25793095&reply_comment_id=25967624&offset=0&total_comments=15&notif_t=feed_comment

  • Problem with my Bluetooth resulting in auto rebooting.

I am having a problem with my bluetooth ever since I bought XPERIA mini st15i. The first time it occured, I took it to the customer care, they solved the problem. The problem did occur again after 2 weeks. So, I again took it to Service. They resolved it again. This problem has occured about 8 times. Ever since I tranfer some files through bluetooth from gallery or file explorer, the phone restatrs again and again. It shows the Xperia logo and then agin, it auto reboots until the battery dies off. I updated the phone yesterday and the problem is occuring today again. My warranty period is over,  so what can I do? In the warranty period, they changed my hardware but still the problem persists.
I think it's some kind of bluetooth bug. Can it be fixed?

download Sony Update Service and try this app http://www.sonymobile.com/ru/tools/update-service/ . Its helped me
