Css to layer a div over a swf

I'm trying to convinve my boss that this is not a good idea,
but I'm having
trouble making the argument ... anyone have a good way for me
to approach
this argument?
Alex

Not by the method you mention in your subject line -
All Active content on a page will always rise to the top, so
to speak,
including Flash, certain form elements, Java applets, and
Active X controls.
This means that each of these will poke through layers. There
is not a good
cross-browser/platform reliable way to solve this issue, but
if you can be
confident in your visitors using IE 5+ or NN6+, then you can
use the Flash
wmode parameter (however, Safari does not support this
properly!).

  • Can I center 2 divs over each other??

    OK, I've built a website completely in Flash and I'm trying
    to lay it out with dreamweaver so that when viewed on 800x640
    resolution maxed browser window it will fit snug without any
    horizontal scrollbar (the SWF's is fit to this standard); and when
    viewed on 1024x768 maxed window it will be centered in the window
    PLUS have a background on either side (So this background should
    not appear in the 800x640 window). If that isn't clear compare
    http://www.gamespot.com.
    Right so my idea was just to put the SWF in a div and this
    background PNG in a div and center them both, while making the PNG
    width=100%.
    Well that doesn't seem to work. I guess you can't center two
    divs over each other?? The only way I can make one overlay on the
    other is by giving it an absolute position, but then of course it
    isn't centered any more.
    Any suggestions?

    Well, no, that's not what I meant.
    Background images don't do 100%. Using CSS like this -
    body { background-repeat:no-repeat;
    background-position:center; }
    will a) prevent the image from tiling, and b) will place it
    in the center of
    any size viewport. Is that what you wanted?

  • Layer or div tag positioning help wanted

    Okay, actually I have two problems: 1) I have managed to
    create a navigation bar, but I can't find out how to save it other
    than saving the html page it was created on. The help literature
    seems to vaguely indicate that a nav bar created can be saved and
    used on other pages, but I'll be damned if I can find where there
    are any details of this process.
    *BTW, my navbar has multiple elements or buttons, so I can't
    just copy paste, ctrl/shift doesn't seem to work selecting multiple
    elements, tho it works on regular images*
    2) Once I solve problem #1, I am goin to want to have the
    navigation bar "stay put" in it's position on the screen, immune to
    any scrolling that occurs on the page(s). So, I plan on putting
    into a layer or div that can be given this behavior or property.
    Unfortunately, I can't find or figure out how to do that, either.
    Is this a good plan? Is there a better way to make the Nav bar
    exempt from page scrolling?

    No offense, but I think your approach may be a bit off base
    here (of
    course I have not seen a link to a a page showing what you
    are trying to
    achieve, so I could be completely wrong). The first part of
    your
    question already makes me nervous, because it makes me think
    you have
    used Fireworks or another image program to create your
    navbars.
    Depending on which version of Fireworks you are using, that
    could be
    disastrous or only unwieldly. The navigation bars created by
    Fireworks
    are definitely not the best solution,and you can go through
    years of
    posts, particularly by Murray, advising against their use.
    If you are interested in an easier way to create your
    navigation, post back.
    Second, wanting your navigation to stay put while the rest of
    the page
    scrolls is something I see here a lot, but it's not
    necessarily how the
    web works. People plunge into frame hell in order to
    accomplish it,
    but it is like trying to kill a mosquito with a jackhammer.
    There is a good extension that will do this for you if you
    insist, but
    given the problems you are having now, I would first create a
    properly
    coded page that behaves as a normal web page should, and ONLY
    THEN
    worry about server-side includes
    revisit the issue of fixed and scrolling page elements.
    An excellent tutorial for creating a cross-browser friendly,
    modern
    (e.g.not relying on tables for layout) page can be found at
    www.projectseven.com (search for "quickdraw" without the
    quotation
    marks), where you can also find an excellent tutorial for
    creating
    horizontal or vertical navigation menus that are simple and
    can be used
    in templates or server-side includes (search for "uberlink"
    without the
    quotation marks).
    Good luck.

  • Firefox for windows won't display absolute positioned divs over flash video

    I have a website that has a brightcove video player. About a month or so ago, I was able to float divs over the video player so that they would display on top of the video player, using absolute positioning.
    You can see the player here:
    lifeminute.tv/evv/8+9+10+11+12+34/widget300s
    In Firefox (mac), Chrome (windows), Internet explorer (windows) and Safari (mac) it all still displays properly. In Firefox (windows) the video player ignores the Z-index I assign it, and always places the divs underneath it, UNLESS I give the floating div a solid background color.
    When I assign the following styles to the div containing the overlay, I can see the text properly, but of course the video is obscured.
    background-color: #FFFFFF;
    height: 158px;
    position: absolute;
    top: 4px;
    width: 275px;
    If I remove the background-color element the whole overlay pops to the back of the stack behind the video again.
    Is this a FF windows bug or am I just missing something obvious?

    At times you have to add wmode="transparent" attribute to the flash video embed code.

  • Layer a grid over photo

    How do I layer a grid over a photo and print photo with grid...... I use this method for drawing.   Thanks!

    Aperture excels at converting, developing, storing, retrieving, and publishing digital photographs.  It has limited tools for creating graphics from your photographs.  For that you need a graphics program.  Graphics program allow compositing.
    Search the forum for "compositing" -- I think you'll turn up some helpful posts with links.
    You could, of course, print the photograph and then draw your grid right on the print.

  • Safari, DIVs over Flash and any dynamic CSS.

    Having done my research it appears there is a bug that has been around for a while that remains unfixed. I was hoping the recent update 2.0.1 may have resolved this issue.
    This is unique to Safari. While 'Window Mode' and using 'z-index' enables you to overlay a div layer in other browsers, it doesn't fully work in Safari. For sure, the functionality was added, but any dynamic interaction, for example CSS roll-over, makes the background Flash jump to the foreground. Lots of flashing and flickering. Other than that we love Safari, just a shame it has taken so long to fix this since version 1. Any idea when this will be fixed?

    I have also had difficulty with flash and CSS layers in Safari. The on(release) action of some buttons in a flash movie I was working on would not function; however, the animated "over" states would function. The site's php/css programmer removed a css layer that was BEHIND the flash file and the functionality of the flash file was restored.
    A fix for this type of behavior ( or a work around ) would be helpful.
    Safari is a great browser -- an excellent gauge for global accessibility.

  • Dreamweaver layer - How can I make visible over a .swf banner?

    Hi all,
    This is a problem I'm facing right now.
    I have got a site. With a .swf banner. I suddenly wanted to add a button on this banner. I tried with Adobe Flash profissional but unfortunatily, I didn't manage in that.
    So, I decided to put this button as a .jpg image in a layer. And place this layer on the .swf banner. And set a link for the image to the targeted page. But this layer didn't show up. So, I put a Back Ground for the layer. And finally I managed to make it visible. When I tried that on FireFox explorer, it worked! . But it did not on Chrome and IE8. Plese help me with that. I just need it visible and working on Chrome and IE8.
    Thank you very much.

    First start by using the correct "wmode" to bring the .swf down into the normal flow of the page... only then z-indexing will come into play. From another post:
    Window Mode (wmode) - What's It For?
    There are three window modes.
    Window
    Opaque
    Transparent
    By default, the Flash Player gets its own hWnd in Windows. This means that the Flash movie actually exists in a display instance within Windows that lives above the core browser display window. So though it appears to be in the browser window, technically, it isn't. It is most efficient for Flash to draw this way and this is the fastest, most efficient rendering mode. However, it is drawing independently of the browser's HTML rendering surface. This is why this default mode (which is equivalent to wmode="window") doesn't allow proper compositing with DHTML layers. This is why your JavaScripted drop-down menus will drop behind your Flash movie.
    In windowless modes (like opaque), Flash Player doesn't have a hWnd. This means that the browser tells the Flash Player when and where to draw onto the browser's own rendering surface. The Flash movie is no longer being rendered on a higher level if you will. It's right there in the page with the rest of the page elements. The Flash buffer is simply drawn into whatever rectangle the browser says, with any Flash stage space not occupied by objects receiving the movie's background color.
    so be sure to include the correct wmode param in your .swf embed code... which, depending on your embed method... will look something like this:
    <param name="wmode" value="opaque"/>
    And no offense Nancy, but why z-index of "1000"... when it only needs to be "2" (only a higher value not a super duper higher value). But hey, I'm guilty of that exaggeration myself when creating menus etc, as though over z-indexing by a few hundred extra layers will really push that sucker down! I've even used z-index of "500" when never in all my born days would I ever create 499 layers below a simple menu! ... or am I missing something about the power of numbers?
    Best wishes all,
    Adninjastrator

  • CSS Template in Dreamweaver, cannot make flash(swf) show ???

    DW is not a graphics app.  You cannot draw layouts on screen.  You need to use CSS code to create the basic layout and HTML for your structure.

    Is it possible to layer a flash object over another flash object? -- The website I am creating has a flash menu and a flash sllideshow.  I want the flash menu (submenu) to be able to appear IN FRONT OF the flash slideshow.  Here is the link with my progress:

    You will notice that when you hover over "Web" in the navigation menu, the SUBMENU appears BEHIND the flash slideshow.
    Any suggestions on making this appear IN FRONT OF the slideshow.
    Both menu and slideshow are extensions purchased from flashdevelopment24.com
    Thanks!

    You have a couple of problems.
    1) Flash slideshows typically rise to the top of everything else on the page.  Ideally, you should keep Flash animates away from drop-down or flyout menus of any type.
    2) Flash is not supported by all web devices.  How will users without Flash navigate your site?
    Almost anything you can do with Flash can be achieved with jQuery.  See examples below.
