Cursor/Pointer Freeze

Whenever I hit the delete key, or use the keyboard to cut or paste, my cursor or pointer freezes or disappears for a few seconds (sometimes up to 5 seconds) and it is getting pretty annoying. I have used system preferences to turn of all trackpad "Gestures". I have also tried changing the tracking and double clicking speed...
My black MB is one week old... running OS 10.4.7.... Anyone have any ideas? Harware problem? Return it? OS problem?

I can assure you that "turning off ignore accidental trackpad input" doesn't solve this problem!
There is something else going on here.
It's as if the computer can't process the input from the track pad immediately when it is working on something else. For example, streaming something, downloading something or ripping something while using the trackpad on something else causes this missing cursor and/or frozen cursor problem.
It doesn't have to be something else that is process intensive for this to happen. I am listening to a stream of audio at 25kbps, and it is occurring as I type this and stop and use my trackpad and ponter now.
The cursor issue is persistent, but not continuous.
I can't believe more people haven't complained about this. Could it be an experience that is something unique to a small number of users?
It still happens if I create a brand new account on my machine.
I may call apple support. But I am not very confident that the person I get will have any solution to offer.

  • Random mouse pointer freezes

On my PPC dual 2.7 running latest Leopard 10.5.2, I have started experiencing random mouse pointer freezes. The freezes last about 10 seconds or so, then all goes back to normal. This happens maybe 10 times a day.
I cannot correlate this to any recent updates or installations. I have repaired permissions and zapped PRAM. My PPC is on 24/7 so all automatic maintenance routines run when they should.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Are you using Time Machine or .Mac Synchronizing? Those automatically run about once an hour and can temporarily slow the computer function.
Open Activity Monitor from the Finder menu, Go/Utilities, Activity Monitor. When the cursor movement slows, look at what application is using the most CPU.
You might also want to restart the computer once every day (or night). You can use the System Preferences Energy Saver to set it up to automatically restart when you are not likely to be using the computer, like 3 AM. The restart does a bunch of system checks and resets things to improve function.

  • Pointer freezes on my mac

I have upgraded to Mavericks and now experience my pointer freezing occasionally.
    I usually use sleep mode.
    A wireless remote trackpad.
To cure this I have to switch off using the rear power button ,switch back on and wait for the restart to finish.
    Can anyone help ?

    Hi Phil,
Take a look at the troubleshooting article linked below, even though it may describe a slightly different issue, the tips may resolve the issue you are seeing.
Trackpad or Magic Trackpad is jumpy or erratic
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1449
    Symptoms
Learn what to do if your cursor jumps, moves unexpectedly, or acts erratically when you touch it.
    Resolution
Follow these steps and recommendations to resolve the issue.
Be sure only one part of your finger is touching the trackpad and that you are not resting your wrist on or very close to the pad. The trackpad may interpret this as your finger touching it and make the cursor move in that direction.
If you're using the Magic Trackpad, be sure the batteries are fully charged.
Moisture collecting on the trackpad can also cause this issue. Wiping off the trackpad with a cloth or tissue usually fixes this. If the issue goes away when a piece of paper is put between the finger and trackpad you may want to consider purchasing a Teflon applique to fit over the pad to prevent the moisture from having direct contact with the trackpad. Before installing the Teflon applique, confirm the trackpad is clean and dry. You can use a mild glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth (not onto the trackpad itself)  to clean the trackpad. Note that oil or lotion can also cause the same issue.
Jewelry may also cause interference. Try removing rings or bracelets and see whether the jumpy or erratic behavior disappears.
Apple has had some reports of this behavior on Mac notebooks being used with power supplies made by a third-party company. If you are using one of these power adapters, unplug it and try running from the Apple battery to see how the trackpad behaves corectly. Also, try using the Apple AC adapter instead of the third-party AC adapter. If the trackpad behaves normally while running from the battery, there is most likely an issue with your adapter or outlet.
If none of the above resolve the issue, try to rule-out software not created by Apple as a cause. To do so, start in Safe Mode.
Magic Trackpad can act erratically when there is intereference. See Wi-Fi and Bluetooth: Potential sources of wireless interference for more information.

  • Cursor name visable property on xy graph: name overlays cursor point.

I have an XY grpah set up, and I realized that when i apply the name visable attribute to the cursors programmiably, the name seems to overlay teh cursor, being right on top of it. Yet if i do it manualy through the cursor legend, it shows it on top... its very odd. Ultimatly i do NOT want to do ti manualy becuase i wil be have an unknown amount of cursors being created and would like them all to show the lables that i give them ABOVE the point... not ontop of it, because its obivously not readable. Anyone have a solution for this?
    Thanks,
    Mark

    Mark,
There is no property to set the position of the cursor label. However, you can add empty characters at the begining of the label, so that the actual string will be to the right of the vertical cursor.
In LabVIEW 7, the cursor label is displayed above the cursor point, but on top of the vertical cursor line.

  • Re-Use of cursor pointer in the Cursor loop

Is it possible to re-use a Cursor pointer as a cursor pointer within the main cursor loop. We have a scenario like
    FOR c1 IN cursor1 LOOP
         FOR c1 IN cursor2 LOOP
         END LOOP;
    END LOOP;
The code seems to work and gives correct result 75% of times and giving wrong result 25% times, even though we are using the same data every time.

This is an existing piece of code, and we are actually trying to investigate why the program is giving incorrect results only sometimes and not always, even when we use the same set of data. This appeared to be the only logical error we could find.
We are using the variable of the first loop inside the second one, which I understand the code shouldn't be doing. But then, I would expect the result to be consistently wrong, which they are not and this is what surprises me. Could it be that the Oracle is not able to handle this properly?

  • Mouse pointer freezes sometimes

Whenever I unplug my iPod (shuffle) from the keyboard (of course after having the volume unmounted), some seconds later the mouse pointer freezes and the computer is totally unresponsive for some seconds. Then everything is normal again, i.e. the mouse pointer can be moved again.
The "system.log" tells something about communication problems with the USB and bus reset or similar.
Is this meant with "hot pluggable"? Should not the iPod be independent from the keyboard or mouse?

    As far as I remember:
    - It does not happen when directly connected to the computer
    - It has never happened with the G3, only with the G5
And, yes, the iPod's firmware is the latest one.
And: Connecting the iPod to the keyboard is just more convenient, even if it's slower. As the MacOS does multitasking, I do not mind if a data transfer runs with two megabytes per second or with one, because I can do something else in the meantime.

  • Mouse pointer freeze

hi i recently buyed a macbook, but from time to time the mouse pointer freezes for a few seconds.I disabled already the two fingers option from the touchpad,(found that suggestion in a forum ) but without success. Is that problem known, or has somebody an idea what that could be ? Thanks for help!

This has been happening to my MacBook Pro for the past few months now. At first I thought it was a bad mouse, but I've tried 3 known good mice and they all exhibit the same problem.
    Another behavior I'm seeing:
When the freeze occurs, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th mouse buttons all lose the the functionality I've assigned to them (Exposé functions) and revert so some odd behavior: In Safari, button 4 simulates clicking the 'Back' button. On most other apps, nothing happens. Button 5 is the same except with the 'Forward' button in Safari. If I wait a couple of seconds, the mouse and buttons start working as normal.
Is this happening to you as well?

  • Cursor keeps freezing on my Macpro

My mouse cursor keeps freezing every twenty seconds or so when I'm working on the MacPro. A couple of times it has frozen completely and I have had to force the machine to re-boot. This is happening on any program ... even just browsing with Safari.
Has anyone else had this problem? ... any ideas? It's starting to drive me a bit crazy ... thinking of going back to the G4!!

if you go into the universal access prefpane and then the mouse panel you can turn on mouse keys. this will let you move the cursor with the keypad keys (the number pad on the right) if your mouse stops working. when the mouse stops working, try usin the keyboard to control the cursor and that should help you diagnose whether its the mouse or something else.

  • Mouse Pointer freezing all the time

    Mouse pointer freezing constantly
    Hi!
My mouse pointer is regularly freezing after about 20 seconds or so. It is released by clicking. I have installed Parallels, and the Windows window says (on the lower left frame) "Click inside OS Window to capture mouse". This has not earlier been necessary even for the Windows window, but has now spread to the Mac side.
I find this utterly annoying and potentially harmful. If I have left the pointer in any place I am not aware of and want to retrieve it, I normally move it to find it. Now I have to click before I can move it, meaning I have to click the mouse in a position I do not know. I can see myself making purchases which ruin me, and the like...
I have recently installed Norton Antivirus on the Mac side and Norman Antivirus on the Windows side. Could that have anything to do with it?
Thank you for any information that can lead to capturing the culprit, dead or alive!
    Hening.

    Hi BDAqua
thank you for your fast reply. I followed yor advice, then booted from my backup disk, repaired the primary disk (no repairs needed) and repaired permissions again, and turned off Norton Auto-protection - altogether to no avail.
    Disk Space on primary drive:
    Capacity of drive 74.53 GB
Mac partition: Capacity: 59.97 GB; Available: 15.68 GB
Windows Partition (Bootcamp, accessed via Parallels):
Capacity: 14.24 GB, Available: 6.84 GB
This seems to mean that I have only 1.44 GB free space on my Mac volume.
Could this be the reason? Tomorrow, I'll move some large files to a backup medium.
    Any more ideas?
    Kind regards - Hening.

  • Cursor/Mouse Freeze on Display

The mouse cursor is freezing momentarily before resuming. I have changed ports and plugged in another mouse (used) and it still happens.
I am running 10.4.11 on an eMac G4

Is the other mouse known-good (i.e., it operates OK on another Mac or PC)?
Have you recently added something like an external HD containing a large number of files? The pausing may be Spotlight indexing the volume in the background.
To check if there's a background process chewing up CPU cycles, open Activity Monitor and view all processes by %CPU usage and see if you can spot anything unusual. It may be easier to just Start Up in Safe Mode to disable extensions and see if the mouse performs better then.

  • A540 Cursor/pointer problems

Hi, on my A540 all-in-one cursor/pointer haphazardly jumps to the upper right corner of the screen and stays there blinking on a very high speed.
Cannot do anything about it (cannot drag it back or control it) so I have to restart the machine using touch screen.
If I shut off the Lenovo wireless mouse I get back the control of the cursor touch screen(tried using different mice to no avail).
After the restart all is fine for a certain period of time until pointer goes crazy again and jumps to the upper right corner of the screen.
I would appreciate any help on that matter. thnx...

I found the problem when I looked over the specifications for your model.  The HDMI port is for Input and not Output.  In otherwords you can use the A540 as a second display only.   Here are the specifications for your reference.....

  • Mouse pointer freezing

    Hi!
My mouse pointer freezes for no apparent reason, and the only thing that helps is force quitting and relaunching the Finder. This has occurred some times; some times I was able to solve the problem by pressing the space bar. But now it occurred in the middle of drawing a looong lasso in PhotoLine, I lost all that work, and I'm going nuts.
It's a Logitech cordless mouse that has worked flawlessly for eternities.
I have just repaired the HD. I have 6GB of RAM on the Nehalem. The RAM has tested OK in Memtest, in multi-user mode though.
Now it happened while I tried to correct "occured" to "occurred". It helped to put the mouse in the charging cradle. Could that be all there is to it? But the mouse was not lacking power, at least the diode was not red, it was not visible at all, and turning green at once when the mouse was put in the cradle. If the battery is empty, the diode turnes red at least in the beginning after the mouse is seated in the cradle.
Hoping for your help - Hening.

Thank you both for your advice. I will run Activity Monitor and watch it. The first thing that strikes me is that even if I do nothing, the memory (and, to a lesser degree, the CPU) allocation for different apps is changing all the time. While I am writing this, the CPU consumption is topped by TextEdit 1.7..0,6%, Activity Monitor 1,4..0,6%, Firefox 0,5%
appleaka, I don't know what kernel_task is, either; but this may not be so necessary.
I have now replaced the batteries and hope that helps. Of course even rechargeable batteries loose the capacity of being charged over time, so this might be the reason.
I'll watch for a while and then report. Thanks again. - Hening

How do I stop trackpad pointer freezing?

I have this same problem. I press the sleep button twice (once to sleep, once to awaken), and I can work again. Freezes on multi-finger scroll/swipes (somtimes on two fingers, always on three). I have tried changing multi-finger option in the trackpad config, to no avail.

  • Infuriating persistent intermittent temporary mouse pointer freeze...

    Hi all,
    Adjective overload??
I have browsed these boards for years but have never had the urge to post until now.
Recently I have noticed every 15 seconds or so my mouse pointer freezes. I am unable to move it. At all. For maybe 0.25 of a second. Then all back to normal. It's driving me insane.
Everything else seems to carry on just fine...
    - iTunes plays without a break in sound
    - No noticeable interruption to frame rate if a game is playing
I have reset PRAM, repaired permissions, plugged mouse direct into Mac Pro instead of the keyboard, tried a different mouse. Same issue.
I keep my Mac Pro well maintained.
I am terrified I have some major hardware malfunction!
Any thoughts or suggestions? Has anyone here experienced anything similar?
    Any pointers or suggestions welcomed.
    Thanks

Did this start happening after installing a certain program, does it happen only while using certain programs or does it happen at all times? Have you tried deleting the preferences and logging out/restarting? What mouse are you using, and did you install the manufacturer's program (like for button programming)? I had issues with Logitech's LCC program (not a freezing problem, but very irritating none the less) that was solved after I removed LCC and put Steermouse in its place.
