Cursor selection tool problem -- jumps to some kind of invisible grid

Something recently changed and it is driving me batty. Let's say I want to select an area to place my signature. It used to be that I could click and drag and draw a rectangle exactly the size I want. Now it jumps to predetermined horizontal and vertical spaces of approximately a 1/4 inch. Same thing happens when I'm trying to draw an arrow, etc.
What do I do to get back to the old way where I could use the cursor with accuracy?
Thanks very much!!!

Well, I just figured out my own problem. "Snap to grid" found in view/show-hide/

  • Quick Selection Tool Problem - Cursor Stuck in Subtract

    Hey All,
I somehow caused the quick selection tool default to be "on always" in the subtraction (minus - ) position; I am able to access the add (plus +) position by using the shift key , but this causes some problems as those are not the defaults keys for this tool or program for that matter.
    Can anyone help?

Be sure the tool isn't set to subtract in the options bar. Otherwise, try resetting the tool by right- or control-clicking the blue arrow just to the right of the tool preset (under the blue PS icon in the below screenshot) to reset the tool.

  • Quick Selection Tool problem

My Quick Selection Tool seems to be extremely quick to select the entire image.  Even with a very small size and very slow movement, I am having a hard time selecting what I intend to.  I don't remember having this problem a week ago.
Is there a sensitivity level or something I am missing?  I do have the quick selection tool selected (not the wand) and I have reset the tool.
    I appreciate any help.  Thanks.

I think I was having a trackpad tap-select snafu. I seemed to be able to scrub/protect an area with the minus selection tool before actually selecting anything and thought that was neat. But I can't replicate the behavior so I'm sure it was just me doing as I do. Maybe to OP can provide a link (the double-q seems interesting).

  • Selection tool problem in Photoshop Elements 8

I am using Photoshop Elements 8 and I am having an awful lot of trouble with the selection tool. I make a selection and then when I go to colour it in, it goes outside the lines by a few pixels, giving the selection a really fuzzy edge, almost like a glowing effect. I can even do this, colour it in and then go over it again with the eraser tool in the same selection and end up with just a fuzzy ring around the outside of the selection. I can't for the life of me figure out why this has been happening, and it is really, really frustrating. I have also had problems with going into an old file I had made ages ago and wanted to work on again, I made a new layer from a selection from the background and it came out all weird and transparent in bits and I couldn't fix it, and again, it had fuzzy edges. I don't know what is wrong, I haven't been using feathering on my edges or anything like that so why is it doing this? Should I just give in and buy the newest version of photoshop elements? Would that even work?

On the Selection brush tool's options bar, set hardness to 100%.
When you make the selection, make certain that the border of the selection outline is precise and does not extend beyond the object to be selected. If it does, subtract from the selection. If the selection falls short, add to it. This is critical and operator dependent.
Once you have created the selection to the best of your ability, place it on a new layer (CTRL+J)
In the layers palette, press CTRL on the keyboard and left click on the layer thumbnail of the selection created in step #3 to make the selection active (should see "marching ants" again) Click on the thumbnail, not the name.
Go to Select>refine edge and use the sliders to fine-tune the selection
Go to Edit>fill selection with foreground color
Let us know if this works for you.

  • Path/Direct Selection tool problems

So, I switched form cc to cc 2014. Because it seems, that everything works fine in the newer Version. But now I realized some issues with the Path Selection Tool. Sometimes I need to select multiple forms or anchor-points with the tool, but while I’m trying to select a form all the locked form layers are selected at the same time. Trying to deselect the locked form via ****+Click doesn’t work. The locked layer is still selected, but without showing the anchor-points. This is annoying. And: This was an issue that was resolved in Photoshop CC, or am I wrong?
Besides that, I have a lot crashing-issues after updating to photoshop cc 2014.

OMG OMG OMG it's working!! So I wasn't using that Chrome plug-in that was mentioned in the article you sent, but I decided to see what would happen if I completely trashed Chrome. I did that, restarted, reset my InDesign preferences again, and I can MOVE THINGS!!
Thank you soooooooooo much. It's a bummer that I had to get rid of Chrome, but I'm just FINE using Safari at least until I get this book project done and can maybe investigate further.

  • Quick  selection tool problem on windows via parallels on mac book pro

Of course I am new here.  I am going through lessons (Classroom in a book) and get to lesson 3 to the point of cropping the image, the quick select tool  works.  After cropping I get the message:  Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Error..., This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way.  Please contact ...  Is it called crashing if now Photoshop closes down?  Of course I googled the issue, cleaned my registry and read a multitude of opinions and advice, deciding to just work around the problem by 'saving as' at appropriate moments.  I have done that lesson now often enough to know it in my sleep, however I am proceeding with the next lessons.  I am NOT very computer literate, so simplistically:  what is the problem, and who do I ask to fix it for me.
Friendly greetings to all you talented people - Rose

Can you assign more memory to the virtual machine (via the Parallels configuration menus)?
Photoshop CS5 has had an update recently, 12.0.1.  If Help - About in Photoshop is showing 12.0.0 you should run the updater (Help - Updates...).
It may be that the OpenGL drivers in Parallels aren't up to the requirements of Photoshop.  It's quite challenging to get OpenGL right in a virtual machine environment, and the virtualization companies are furiously releasing new versions with more and more graphics capabilities just so gamers will buy their software over the competition's.  Try disabling the OpenGL feature via Edit - Preferences - Performance and see if that helps.

  • Arrow keys with direct select tool problem

    Hi list,
I hope somebody can help me. I just switched from MX to CS3.
Now selecting an anchor with the direct select tool and
    moving it with
the arrow keys moves it 30 Steps at once (Using normal select
    tool works
as usual). Strangely enough I have to undo 30 Times for one
    time hitting
    the arrow key.
Does anyone know this problem or have a hint where to switch
    this?
    thanks in advance
    oe

Your frustration is understandable. Anchor point selection is unforgiving in InDesign, especially when compared to Illustrator with Smart Guides, although I wouldn't call it "broken."
I suspect most InDesign users don't do enough "path editing" on their InDesign pages for there to be an outcry over this.

It shouldn't be able to select and move an image. That is not the point of the tool.
That's always been a function of the Direct Select tool. Simply, if you're aiming for an anchor point and select the frame's content instead, you've missed the point. <rimshot>
There's nothing broken, and no advice to offer, other than zoom in further, slow down, and keep an eye on the pointer cues which change when the pointer is over an anchor point. I suppose it's also possible you could make adjustments to your mouse/input device settings that might help you move and click more precisely.

  • Automation select tool problem

    i'm using logic 8 on a G5 running osx 10.4.11
for some reason i can't get the automation select tool to work. it's driving me crazy!
i select the tool, try to band select the automation points, but nothing gets selected. when i select the region, no points get selected either.
am i missing something really obvious here?!?
    cheers

i've tried both of those and it doesn't work. alt-clicking doesn't select any nodes and the marquee tool selects the area, but then if i try and use the pointer tool the move the nodes, it makes to nodes that are even on the outside area of the selection and moves those. sometimes!

  • Selection Tool problem

    Hi All,
    I'm using Illustrator CS4 on Mac 10.6.6.
It's something weird with my selection tools(V),
when I click and drag the cursor to select things with selection tools, the cursor become white arrow and act like the direct selection tools, so i can only select the anchors and points rather than the whole object,
    Can Anyone Help!!!!!? Thanks!

    kionkidking,
Since you have the Mac OS (10.6.5 or) 10.6.6, you seem to need a hack:

Otherwise, it may be interference from another application, see especially Item 7 in Other options

  • CS5 Selection tool problems

    Hello Forum,
I have just downloaded Adobe Photoshop CS5 (Trial version). I am having problems with the selection tool, whenever I try to select something with the lasso tool, i hold down my left mouse button and drag around to make a selection but i can't see what I am selecting util I release the left mouse button. It's quite frustrating because I am unable to properly select something (I can't see the trail my selection leaves behind). It's the same for the rectangle selection tool.
I have a Dell Latitude E6400, Core 2 Duo P8700 @ @.53 GHz, 4 Gigs of RAM. Integrated graphics card, Mobile Intel 4 Series Express (Adapter String: Mobile Intel(R) GMA 4500MHD).
    Thank you,
    Alex

Do you have the latest driver release for your video hardware?
I haven't any personal experience with Intel video interfaces, but we do see a lot of negative comments about how well they work with Adobe products on this forum.
Assuming your computer has a PCIe slot, you may ultimately want to go with an ATI or nVidia graphics card, and disable the onboard video interface.

  • Quick selection tool problem (CS5)

Everytime I use the Quick selection tool in CS5 I always seem to get a unsmooth edge and also white lines (please see photo attached below). When I use the pen tool I dont get this problem. Any ideas guys? thank you very much.

This is pretty normal. The Quick Selection tool is looking for borders between pixel values and, if they are not well defined, you get a fuzzy edge.
The pen tool puts clear vector lines where you draw them.

  • Direct selection tool problems

My selection tool isn't working properly. I can select an object and resize it, but I cannot move it. I have reset preferences and even reinstalled InDesign, to no avail. The objects are not locked and they aren't on master pages. If I use the Direct Selection tool and select all the outer points of the object I can move it, but that's obviously not an ideal work around! This problem is happening with new AND old files. I am working on a big project so I HAVE to get this figured out ASAP. Please help!!!

  • HELP! Selection tool problems cs3

Suddenly my selection tool(v) will now only select as the direct selection.
    How do I fix this?

It looks as if you've accidentally hidden the bounding box. Go to View>Show Bounding Box, or keyboard shortcut command [control]-shift B.

  • New selection tools problem

    another hobbled tool ...
if i select a bunch of clips in the timeline, for instance with the Select All Tracks Forward Tool (tttt), and then wish to deselect a range of clips, with the Group Selection Tool (gg) and the command key ... the group selection tool no longer deselects a range, it just negates the selection already made. i have to deselect one clip at a time ...
i swear this is a new bug. anyone else experience this?
    R.

Sorry no, it works fine for me.
Try deselecting with just the selection tool "a"
    Trash prefs time?

  • Direct Selection tool problem

So as all of you know with the direct selection tool you can click/click and drag over a point so you can alter it with handles. On my illustrator this feature works fine until i have the artboard open for a certain amount of time or save and open the file at a later point. I will have the tool open but i click the point or drag over it and the handles do not appear. This has become very frustrating. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    View > Show Edges
You probably inadvertently hit the shortcut.
