Cut and move in OS X: is it really possible?

Hello,
Usually, when I want to move a file/folder to another location, all I get is just copy & paste! Well, I can always delete the files/folders from the original place after copying them, but this is an extra redundant work. Sometimes, it can be quite annoying if it is about a big video file: imagine a 10gb-20gb file may take 10minute to be copied and another couple of minutes to be deleted!
I have blindly tried various keyboard possibilities such as holding apple key or option key or ctrl key while moving the file with no help. However, sometimes when I drag and drop, it automatically moves the file instead of copying it.
Honestly, I am quite upset about this. I find it absurd that they claim 'OS X is the most advanced operating system' if it doesn't even have a move option and all you can do is copying! I hope this is not true. If it does, then I have to say OS X is extremely nonuser-friendly because I am quite experienced with computer environments and I can't still find this!
Thanks, Ramin

Thanks guys for your answer. I really appreciate them. Regarding the first response I got: yes, that was rude. If I didn't promptly write a response, it was because I didn't care much about it. I understand some people see it as their mission to promote or support a tool they are using. Some may see it crucial to defend their favorites against 'dangers' if it could have interpreted that way. On the contrary, I see it my mission to criticize things. This is somehow what I believe to be a more useful thing to do. Apple OS X is a great operating system but it is far from being perfect and it has certain obvious imperfections even comparing to Windows while it also has certain advantages over the pther OS's. By doing fair comparisons, we encourage companies in putting their efforts into resolving imperfections hence, seeing improvements in both OS X and Windows and through this, we consumers will be the winners!
Now let's look at it: Being the most advanced OS is subjective, I admit. I am talking of my own personal view. When Apple talks of OS X in their website, most of the talks are about eye-candies and candy-tools. Don't get me wrong, I do care about appearance and I find some of these candy-tools quite useful. However, as an example, a more advanced OS must have a more sophisticated multitasking engine or must have implemented a kernel that better utilizes the potential of a multi-processor system. When I check their website, Apple boasts OS X a lot on this, but it fails to provide us with any argument on why OS X is more advanced than say Linux or even Windows in this regard. That is why I say they have claimed something without proving it! I am not an expert in computer science, but I can easily see if an argument has been presented to us, the audience, or not.
As per moving files and folders from one drive to another drive, in Windows and Linux, you can press ctrl + x and ctrl + c to cut and paste a file or folder. The problem is that there is no similar operation in OS X, as you confirm it. Since, I move files and folders across the drives quite often, I find this annoying. I have to spend twice as much time in OS X to do so as I do in Windows.
By the way, what is the Delete button do in OS X? It seems it does nothing! In Windows and Linux it send the item to the garbage bin. In Os X doesn't do that. So why is that button there?
There are other places where improvements are possible, but this message has already got too long.
Once again, thanks for your answers.

I have a scanned to pdf (raster image) that I attempted to

The page had narrow top and bottom margins with much white space in the middle.  I thought I could move the bottom text up but I either did not have the rght tool or something was not working because it acted like one image on te page.
    Thanks!

I may still give the Epson Artisan 810 a hard look...it appears to be a nice AIO. One other thing I hate about my HP is if I haven't printed in a day or two the first time I send something to it, it just sits there making noises for five minutes before doing anything. Same thing when it quits...it makes noises for a couple of minutes and then quiets down. Does the 810 do anything similar? Lastly, I'm pretty happy with the color prints that this one makes...how are they with the 810.
Thanks for your time in answering these questions.

  • Cut and move image using mouse ?

    Hello,
I am developing one paint program. I am making it similar to microsoft paint. In This paint, I want to use lasso, magic wand tool and select tool. But I am not too familiar with java. And want to do with your help. Please help on this topic. If lasso and magic wand tools behave same. Then please tell me about only select tool that will use for the purpose of select a particular area from canvas (canvas is drawing sheets that holds the drawing). Please help me.
If there is any snippet of this above declaration please send. Can we use system clipboard to cut, move and paste for this drawing by the help of mouse. Please help me. I will really thankful to you.
    Thanks in advance.
    Manveer

For the Magic Wand (at least for what I suppose it is) I would consider the image as a graph, where two pixels are connected if the difference between their color values is below some tolerance value. Then you can easily perform the iterative breadth-first algorithm to collect the pixels of the selection. I recently did something similar (although not on an image itself, but on some higher abstraction of it).
For the Lasso i would collect all the pixels, the user selects, then calculate the bounding box over the selected pixel area and finally determine for each pixel inside the bounding box, that is no member of the lasso/selection pixels, whether it lies inside or outside the selection area. This could be accomplished by performing another bfs from one pixel, that includes all pixels besides the ones lying outside the bounding box or are pixels of the selection lasso.

  • InDesign copy, cut or move box functions don't work

I am having trouble with the copy, cut and move box commands. When a text or shape box is active, I cannot move it with the cursor. It will move if I use the arrow keys, but the box behaves like it were "locked." I deleted my preferences, but that makes no difference. This problem persists whether I am in an existing ID document, or if I start a new one.
The copy and cut functions don't work either.

Of course replacing your prefs is a possibility, and has nothing to do with the need to force quit (but will probably cure it). Replacing prefs is done with the application closed, either using the keyboard combination as you relaunch, or by deleting or renaming the specified files, both ow hich are desribed inthe link in the previous post.
You posted that you had already deleted the prefs, I believe, but many users are not aware they can use the keyboard or that there are two files involved for ID and are not successful, and thus think repacing the the prefs is not going to solve the problem. Hence my previous question. Did you use one of the methods in the link?

  • How do I cut an image in half and move the halves independently?

How do I cut an image in half, and move the halves independently?

Use the rectangular marquee tool to select half the image, then Layer>New Layer via cut. You can turn on the rulers and set a guide so you'll know the boundaries you want if you need it to be exactly half.
If you want to also be able to move the other half, before you start double click the background layer in the layers panel to turn it to a regular layer.

How can I move columns in Numbers without distorting the formula in other cells?  In Excel I can cut and paste entire columns and the formula in other cells adjusts accordingly.  When I do it in Numbers, the formula messes up.  How can I do this?
For example: I have formulas in columns D and F that relate to columns C to CU
If I want to move one column from one position to another (say S to T), the formula loses the colums that was moved, i.e. it doesn't recognize it has moved, rather sees it as deleted...  How can I do this without distorting the formula?

If I often urge askers to look at the available resources, it's because  a large range of questions asked in the forums are already answered in these documents.
As they are PDFs, they are easy to search in.
    CAUTION
Download them while they are available.
Given what is delivered with iBooks Author, I'm afraid that we will not get such easy to use documents.
Searching infos in the  iBooks Author documentation available on line is awfully cumbersome and a lot of embedded links are wrongly flagged this way. In the Help files they aren't links but underlined strings.
It seems that the tool used to generate the web pages was wrongly configured.

  • Snip: Cut time and move by locators problem

If I select "yes" for "Do you also want to move tempo changes and global score symbols?", then the Snip happens, but one of my earlier regions before the snip is now out of time.
I have a (different) frozen track, so tried unfreezing that first but it didn't help.
If I select "No" for "Do you also want to move tempo changes and global score symbols?", then all regions are still in time, but now my later automation is out by X number of bars.
It's a movie I'm working on, and the bars in question are the end titles for which I have no footage yet, so it's tagged on after the movie has finished (I realise this won't export to movie...), but I've just tried another snip earlier during the movie and the same thing happens, always with the same track.
The region on the track in question is not smpte-locked either...
    Quad 6.5Gb   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   PB 1.25Ghz 1.5Gb Ram, Motu 828Mk2

Irvind, I think I have seen this problem as well. For me it turned out to be that the last tempo change before the cut region got deleted - even though this may have been sometime before. It's not immediately obvious what has gone wrong because it all goes slightly out of time!
I found I had to insert a duplicate tempo setting about a bar
before the cut and this got deleted leaving the previous one intact.
I think this is termed an unwanted program feature
Hope this solves it for you.

  • .DV and .MOV files don't play smoothly in the Final Cut Express viewer

    Hi,
I bought Final Cut Express 4.0 yesterday, so I have no experience with it. I only used iMovies HD 6.0.3 a little before.
    Problem:
When I import my .MOV and .DV files into FCE 4.0, then try to watch them in the viewer they don't play smoothly. The sound is fine, but the video is not smooth, it plays in stops and starts.
Just to see, I tried importing a .FLV file and it plays just fine in the viewer, both audio and video runs smoothly with no 'stop starting'
I experimented with importing different file sizes of .DV and .MOV, from 3GB to a few MB even and even very small clips of a few KB. But regardless of the size I always have this problem of them not running smoothly in the viewer.
One of the .MOV files I tried to import was a reference file, and I later read in the manual that FCE may only recognise the original file. But I have the same problem even with the Original file and other self contained files that have been copied from the original. So it doesnt seem to just a problem with reference files.
Any idea what the problem might be?
Is it something to do with how I have FCE set up?
Or is it that the .MOV and .DV files are not being properly imported and is this why they are not running smoothly in the viewer?
I'm using a MacBook with 10.4.11 operating system, which the guys at my local Apple store said would be fine for using FCE 4.0.
    Hope someone can help,
    Ian.

Look at item properties for the .mov and .dv files. What exactly does it say they are? What drive are they playing back from? Make sure the contents of the viewer are set to fit to window in the View popup at the top of the viewer.

  • Cut and pasting clips to a new movie causes 15x file size increase!!

I'm using 6.04 iMovie. I'm converting 8mm analog video via Canopus 300 into imovie. These movies were of an action sport and very few clips are over ten minutes when imported.
I have 4 files(sourced from 4 tapes) from 22-28GB in imovie. I have edited these files, removing bad video, unwanted scenes and have added transitions and titles. The resulting files are each from 22-28Gb's in size.
I then went to make a highlight video by copying and pasting clips from two of the movies. The resulting highlight movie exceeds 160Gb's I have two more movies to past clips from!
I am aware of the "non-destructive" editing feature of Imovie. In the process of editing the individual movies and putting together the highlight movie I emptied trash frequently.
    My questions:
1.) What is the best procedure to cut and paste clips from movies to make a highlight movie?
2.) What can i do with my highlight video to get the size back down to around 15 Gb's? (I've only used about 25% of each of the two first tapes in the highlight video)
    Thanks

    Hello, Scott,
iMovie moves clips to the trash that you have deleted.....if you are not using any part of that clip. If you are using any part of it, the parts you crop out, 'delete,' will be removed from your movie, but not put into trash and not removed from iMovie's project file. If you use 10 seconds of a 30 second clip, for example, but later decide that you really need to have more than the 10 seconds, say you need 15 seconds, all you have to do is go click on that 10 second clip in your movie and then go to 'Advanced' and select 'Revert clip to original' and iMovie will put back the entire clip for you to re-crop.
It is not exactly the same for still photos. If you are using still photos with the Ken Burns effect, emptying the trash will remove the photo's 'clip' and you will not be able to redo the KB effect if you decide to change it. Leaving the trash alone will permit iMovie to retrieve the photo so that you can make those edits. Some of us never empty the trash in iMovie.
When you export as Full quality Quick Time, you are getting just that.....Full Quality, no changes from the original. Your movie is not being compressed, it is shortened because you are saving only the clips that are actually used in the movie, not all the rest. Nothing is lost in quality and you can edit as usual, except for the ability to retrieve any clips that are not in the movie. You will not be able to use the 'Revert clip to original,' now because you have a new set of 'originals.'
So, when you export to quicktime, be sure that you are completely finished with the cropping of your clips and that you will not need to add anything that you previously deleted. I export to quicktime and then open a new iMovie and import the new qt movie into that. Once you see that it plays properly, you can delete the first iMovie and just work with this one. However, it will come in as one large clip, with audio and video incorporated into one track. You will not be able to re-edit titles and effects. (Well, you CAN do it a bit, but it is tricky and you will lose some footage).
I actually make a quicktime version of almost all of my iMovies. I find that this process eliminates any jerkiness or stuttering of my longer movies. I edit the original iMovie by cropping clips, adding photos, putting in titles and transitions. I then add audio last, usually first some short audio clips to go with some of the photos, and then I add background music last. I usually export to quicktime during the adding music part, whenever iMovie starts playing back in a stuttering way. The new quicktime movie is smooth and I can finish my music additions easily.
Apparently, the latest version of quicktime is much better for the jerkiness problem, but I have been hesitant to upgrade since I am in the midst of doing about 4 iMovies.
    Good luck with your project!

  • Cut and paste not working in iphoto

I can't cut and paste between events in iPhoto any longer.  i tried flagging a photo but the add flag item to event was grayed out. how can you move photos between events.  i tried dragging but page didn't scroll very well so was a little inefficient

I see, in the "Photos" album I cannot cut and paste either. I can cut the photo from the event, but not paste it into a different event, because It is impossible to select the event for pasting in the Photos album.
@ Terence Devlin, is pasting into an event supposed to work inside the Photos album?
I can paste into an event in the Events view. And dragging and dropping between events is working well in the Photos view.
i tried flagging a photo but the add flag item to event was grayed out.
This cannot work in Photos view, because "Add flagged items to the selected event" requires an event to be selected, an in the Photos album is no selected event. You can create a new event from the flagged photos and drag this event on top of the event where you want them to go.
So, I am afraid you will have to switch between the Photos album and the Events view to move your photos around.

  • Why can't I cut and paste photos between project?

I recently made the transition from iPhoto to Aperture. One of the weird things is that I can't cut and paste photos between projects. In iPhoto this is an easy way to organize your projects if some photos are in the wrong place.
You also can't split projects, in iPhoto you can do this easily. Say, if two day's photos ending being in the same project, in iPhoto there's a button that you split them in the middle. Is there something like this in Aperture?

    Copy and Paste:
In iPhoto "copy and paste" was possible, because it was not possible in the early versions, to see both projects at the same time, the one you are moving from, and the one you are moving to.
In Aperture you simply drag from the source project to the destination project to move image versions around. Also, it is easy to see more than one project in the Browser at the same time, see: Aperture 3 User Manual: Working with Two or More Browsers Open
To drag to another project, select the images in the project, then drag to the other project in the source list, for example:
To split a project, select the images you want to have in the split part, then create a new project from these images: Enable the check mark "Move selected items to new project". This will split the original project.

  • I can't be the only person who has this problem - when a month ends on a Saturday I can't drag events into the next month and instead have to cut and paste - a real pain in the butt. I thought there was something called "scroll" but I can't find that

I can't be the only person who has this problem with iCal- when a month ends on a Saturday I can't drag events into the next month and instead have to cut and paste - a real pain in the butt. I thought there was something called "scroll" but I can't find that.

Yeah that works, but, it involves a click on the event, a click on edit, a click on the date, keystrokes, plus, since you can't see the next month you have to have a calendar in front of you so as to put it to the right date. It's easier just to cut it and advance the month and paste it, once you are in the right month you can move it around helter skelter willy nilly no problems. Although now that you mention it I will try it, maybe it is easier than cut and paste as I don't really care about the date, as long as it gets moved into the right month I can drag it around all I want.

  • Final Cut and After Effects "file is busy"

    Hello All-
I am running Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 and After Effects 7.0.1 Pro (on OS 10.4.8) and I have a question. I have a series of After Effects animated DV Quicktime clips edited together in Final Cut, and when I make changes to the After Effects project files and try to rerender, I get an error:
    After Effects error: unable to overwrite - file is busy (delete) (-47) ( 3 :: 3 )
It's like Final Cut is "holding onto" the files and not allowing After Effects to rerender them. If I close down Final Cut, I can rerender just fine, but this gets real annoying closing it down and restarting it every time I need to rerender a clip. The problem is, because of my workflow, I need to do this dozens of times a day with clients in the room and I'm spending a lot of time closing and restarting Final Cut over the course of a day... is there way to do this without closing down Final Cut?
I assigned After Effects to be the "External Editor" for "Video Files", and used Final Cut's "Open In Editor" command. It sends the quicktime file to After Effects (not exactly what I want) and you would think that at this point Final Cut would have relenquished its access to the file so that I could rerender in After Effects, but nope, I still get the error. I have tried this with the User Preference setting "Always Reconnect Externally Modified Files" both on and off, no difference. I have also tried "Embed Project Link" in After Effects's quicktime output options, but this didn't help anything (I believe this only affects other Adobe apps).
The weird part of this is that when I drop a Photoshop file onto the Final Cut timeline, I can do "Open in Editor", it throws it to Photoshop, I can alter it and save with no problem, and pop back into Final Cut and it will be updated. But no such luck with Quicktime files and After Effects.
Let me know if there is a solution to this, or if I am stuck having to shut down Final Cut every single time I need to rerender one of the After Effects animation clips in the timeline.

What i have to suggest is more of a work around than it is a solution. i've had this problem off and on as well. What i do is add a number to the name of the newly rendered file, (ie. "monkey_throwspoo2.mov") import that file into FCP, open it in the viewer, and then copy it (apple + c). Provided it's the smae length as the previous file, you can right click on the previous file in the timeline and paste attributes, making sure to click on the content button for video (and audio if there is any). This should replace the old file in the timeline with the new one. Granted, you end up having a bunch of files that you're not using, but it's faster than restarting Final Cut (and looks more like it's something you're doing on purpose rather than a problem with the program to your clients). Hope this helps.

  • Tips&Tricks How to use Final Cut and Color !

    Hello ,
Final Cut - Color - Back to Final Cut
After many days of trying to get this combination working I have found a non-Color-Final Cut way :
1)After you final cut picture edit is locked you have to clean as much as possible the timeline . That means you will have to stick all your image clips to a sigle video timeline and remove all attributes from each clip . Delete all empty video tracks and audio tracks .
Make sure you don't have any gaps in the timeline .
All clips should have the same compression type and frame rates .
2)Send it to Color , grade all the scenes and render it out .
3)Go in finder to the render folder and create an automator work flow adding as source the render folder from color.
Add the find finder option and set it up to look after .mov files .
Add a move finder option and move all the .mov files from Render Color Folder to a new empty folder .
Having done this you should have all the files from the render color folder moved to a new folder .
4)Go back in Final Cut drag&drop all the clips from that new folder on a new timeline , go ahead and check if the new timeline is identical with the old one .
Copy and paste all the attributes from the old sequence to the one from color and re-render in Final Cut . That's it you should be able now to put it back on a tape as a master movie.
In my case Color 1.02 and Final Cut 6.02 I couldn't get the material out from color using another way .
Please post your detailed work flow here and also post if you find this post useful and/or bugs you find about this workflow .
I hope Apple will fix this issue in their next update .

I use external drives as backup. But I don't trust them. And in case of fire or what ever...It is of no use...
But I agree on your comment about DropBox. It would have been the perfect solution though.
    What else is there?
I have a 2TB HD but these projects are huge and still growing - so I have to move my projects to several external drives. So maybe I should just work directly from external drives and skip the partition of the computers main drive? I am thinking of the disadvantage of reducing the total storage of the disk.

  • Using still images with Final Cut (and the apple suite in general)

I have had a re-occuring and long term problem that has caused me many lost hours of head scratching and work arounds, and as of yet I have not been able to come up with a good solution.
Its to do with integrating still images with the Final Cut suite.
If I receive a high quality image from a client to use in their video and I then try importing it into Final Cut and animating it, it always ends up looking like a pile of ahem. Often I will get "swimming" lines appear across fine detail on the image, and parts of it will flicker as it moves across the screen. For instance, if I have a picture of some blinds or other fine detail (especially horizontal and vertical lines), when I add a grow and throw movement to it the detail will become very noisy - buzzing and flickering like mad.
I have found I can counter this by resizing the image in photoshop to a resolution closer to SD video (700w or 500h) - but I always end up losing detail, and the flickering and noise is only reduced, not eliminated. Other things that have helped are blur effects applied at a very low level, like 0.5 blur, so its not noticeable visually, but Final Cut seems to treat it differently and quieten the noise and flicker down.
However, all of these workarounds are ultimately still giving a reduced quality product.
Also, this problem is not necessarily constrained to Final Cut, I am currently fighting DVD Studio Pro because it is murdering the text quality in a stills slideshow I am creating - and in this situation there is no animation being applied. No matter what file type (psd, jpeg, tiff, png...) or size I output the text and images from Photoshop in, the moment DVD studio pro gets hold of it, it turns to cripe.
For a while I was putting it down to the fact that I usually edit in SD (PAL) formats, and there just wasn't the resolution available to reproduce fine detail. However, I do often see other people achieving pin-sharp fine detail on still images and text in SD formats (the Apple templates are a good example)
So, my question to you, oh great and high boffins, if you are dealing with still images and text, how do you do it? How do you work around any noise problems you have, and how do you produce those pin-sharp images (both moving and still) I see in other professional productions?
    Quad G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

still images with too high a resolution will always cause problems. this is due to the detail of the image being finer than the scanline of the tv can display ... obviously this will caise the image to flicker as these details alternately appear and disappear as and when the scanline can display them. as you have discovered, the answer is to apply a very small blur, the effect being that the detail is spread by the blur such that the scanline can dislay it correctly.
text issues are often rooted in the same problem ... unless the text is placed very carefully (whole even number on the y axis) then the quality may be impaired due to the resulting interlacing/scanline issues
