Damaged 23" ACD

Before I begin, any and all help dealing with this unfortunate issue would be wonderful.
Recently my display was damaged when someone violently removed a USB cable from the rear USB input. There is no cosmetic damage to the exterior; however, near the lower portion of the screen, (adjacent to the right-hand side of the dock and almost directly lined up with the USB port) there appears to be a yellow & purple discoloration.
Currently, I'm avoiding dealing with the issue by utilizing dark (either black or the newer grass desktop provided by Leopard) desktops but I do realize that eventually I'm going to have to get it fixed.
I understand that warranties scarcely cover accidental damage, so if anyone can help me out with what kind of cost I'd be looking at, that'd be great.
Also: I assume that I will almost-definitely have to repair the entire LCD portion of the screen.
I did find this website http://www.moniserv.com/doc/lcd.html but I'm not entirely sure of their reliability and I have no idea what "Except Panel, Polarize Film" entails.

I assume that I will almost-definitely have to repair the entire LCD portion of the screen.
You will be buying a new monitor, most likely. The repair cost will probably be greater than purchase.

  • Severe screen damage on a 30" ACD

    A very sad day indeed:
Last night a framed picture fell off the wall and hit the screen of my 30" ACD in 2 parts leaving profound scratches in both places. One is so deep that background light leaks awfully through it, the other doesn't present light leakage but is quite deep as well.
Here are 2 crappy cell phone pics of the bleeding scratch (taken with the LCD showing a pure black image): http://homepage.mac.com/luisbustamante/LCDscratch.jpg
My question is if there's something to be done? Can Apple fix this? If so, will it be so expensive that I'll be better off buying a new display? Any other suggestions?
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks for your help.

This is one of those things that home contents insurance is for. It will cost you a lot to get it repaired, if Apple will even offer this service. You might want to just eat the cost and buy a new one.
To repair yourself, you will need a new LCD panel. You're looking for the LG-Philips LM300WQ1, but I don't like your chances of finding just one of them. I suspect there's only about 4 companies that buy them from the manufacturer.

  • MBP 17" 2010: horizontal lines extending out from open windows on 30" ACD?

I have a mid-2010 17" I7 with anti-glare screen. The topcase was replaced for factory damage and now the screen was replaced by Apple here in Paris, where I live. I use the MBP with a 30" ACD at home, with no problems until I picked up the repaired MBP yesterday with new screen. I now notice that when I open a window, like Safari or Mail, the lines (let's call it the lower line that frames the menu bar in grey on the top of each open window) seems to extend beyond the open window and run across the top of the entire 30" display. If I move the window, that line moves across the screen with it. It doesn't occur on the MBP screen itself, only on the attached 30". So that if you open Safari and place it in the center of the external display, you see the line running from the grey menu bar on top of the window extend out in both direction across the entire display. It has no effect within the windows you are looking at all, but this wasn't there, or I never noticed it before. I changed the desktop background to see if it changed, and basically not, except it is not viewable so much with light or white background.
There is no effect within the windows being viewed. It's as if the line running out from the frame of the window, especially the bottom part of the grey menu bar on top, are extending out across the screen.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It turns out that I tested my 30" ACD with a friends Macbook and it has the same phenomenon. It's quite strange. The darker the blue or grey the more this line flows out from the grey bar frame on Safari or Mail windows. The smaller the window the less evident the phenomenon. Again, it has no effect on the windows themselves, and only occurs toward the top of the display. When you move the window down on the screen it disappears. And it is only the line below the grey upper bar that is rather bold that bleeds out across the screen.
I wonder if there is a way to reset the display or move to some default setting that would correct this.

  • 20" acd white spots/burn in?

i have an 8month old ACD 20" with my macpro quad.
ive noticed over the past few months even wheni got it, had some sort of white spot/burn in (like something is touching the back of the lcd screen.
i remember reading about something about similar issues with powerbooks before even on the apple website cant find the link to reference.
but since i didnt purchase the display with my macpro but i have apple care warranty and the display is under the 1 year hardware warranty and was told it was capable of being covered with my macpro apple care and/or with the one year warranty.
im wondering if anyone has experienced the same issue or know if this is replaceable from apple?
the size of it sometimes changes, ive originally noticed it was the size of a quarter, then to a nickel...ive cleaned off the monitor and softly rubbed ver the area with a non-damaging cloth but still no results.
    any suggestions?
    thanks!

    Hi-
The article to which you are referring follows:
    http://www.apple.com/support/powerbook/displayprogram/
I would take the display in for warranty repair. It is repairable/replaceable (up to Apple).
Don't let the 1 year lapse.
Also, since you are still under the 1 year limit, you can still purchase Applecare for the display:

  • Protective Cases for ACD HD 23" While Traveling

    Hello Guys
I will soon be purchasing the 23inch ACD. I was wondering where I could locate a good protective case for my 23inch display while I travel. I went to a local apple store and they recommended that I could either ship it or buy a case from a music store, the type that they use for drums and other music equiment.
    I also came across http://www.pelican.com/
What do you guys recommend? I'll be changing dorms over the summer and then once I am done during the middle of summer I will be flying back home. Should I ship it with a certain shipping company or should I get a case for it?

This is a good idea, I took my monitor from the US to Indonesia and put it in the original box. It arrived in a very good condition. No damage whatsoever. Been using it for over 6 months and it's fine.

  • When I attempt to open a PDF file I saved from a website, I get the message "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired." Is there any way to correct this problem?

When I attempt to open a PDF file I saved from a website using Safari, I get the message "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired." When I save the same PDF file using FireFox it opens up immediately. Is there any way to correct this problem with Safari?

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • How do I backup to my external hd on 10.6.8 if the disk is damaged and can't be repaired?

Hi! So, I'll get straight to the point. I'm running 10.6.8 on my mac, which is about 5 years old. I attempted to install OSX Mavericks last night, so I could update some of my software. Anyways, the computer restarts and opens up the installer for OSX Mavericks, but after about a minute of installing, it shows that the Mavericks install failed. The upgrade couldn't be started because the disk Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired.
Could someone tell me (step by step) how to back up all of my data, erase the disk, and install again? I have an external HD by the way.
    Help would be much appreciated!

So, essentially you're saying that I need to download one of these programs to my external hd. But, how do I boot it from my mac if I can't get past the installation screen of Mavericks? I'm running on my other mac right now, if that helps. I've tried to use disk utility to repair, but it's greyed out. I honestly just want to retrieve all of my data, wipe the drive, and then install a new one. I just want to know how to do that.

  • I have an external drive - WD My Passport FOR MAC. I want to format it to work on both mac and windows. Which format do you think I should use? Will either one cause damage to the files on the hard drive?

I have an external hard drive - WD My Passport FOR MAC. I want to format it to work on both mac and windows. I also want to be able to connect it to my TV and watch movies.
I read up and I think I am supposed to use exFAT or FAT32? I also saw MS-DOS. Which format should I should use? Will any of them cause damage to the files on the hard drive?
My little memory stick uses MS-DOS and it works on both mac and windows.
Please can you just tell me a little about each and suggest which one to use.
I know how to change it once you tell me so don't waste your time writing about changing it.

Will any of them cause damage to the files on the hard drive?
WARNING: FORMATTING A DRIVE ERASES IT COMPLETELY !!
If you need to carry large files (e.g., larger than about 4GB) back and forth, you may need ExFAT. Otherwise MS-DOS works for smaller files.
The Mac can Read, but not write Windows New Technology File System (NTFS) without an add-on program such as Paragon NTFS.

  • I water damaged my iPhone and want to get my photos back. My iPhone was ios7 but my icloud synced to my work ipad on ios8. Is it now impossible to view any data from ios7 on icloud drive? Any help to get my photos back please!

I damaged my iphone 5s and want to get my photos back. It was submerged in water for a good five minutes (and is now in rice) but I'm pretty sure it's dead.
I really would like to get my photos back. I wasn't plugging in my iphone and backing up, I just assumed it did it automatically because about a week ago I had a message saying automatic backups were stopping as my icloud was full.
My work ipad is running on ios8 (as of a few days ago!) but my iphone was on ios7 as I didnt have enough space to install the update. This means that my icloud is now icloud drive and I cannot view the stuff from my ios7 device without upgrading it to ios8. Trouble is, I cant upgrade it because it's in a rice bowl.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Any idea if I will be able to access my photos on icloud at all? I'm not very hopeful for my phone working again and downloading things that way!
    Thanks!

Photos that are in the cloud stay there until they are removed by a device that has the right privileges. If your iPad is logged in with the same AppleID, then doesn't it show the photos from iCloud?
You will only be on iCloud Drive if you expressly chose to upgrade.

  • Windows 7 install on ssd with primary disk damaged

Hi everyone, to start sorry for my english, it's the best i can do...
I'm having a troubleduring the installation of windows with boot camp.
I have an imac 27 late 2009 with the 1 tb 3.5 internal disk that doesn't work. I have to replace it (using the apple free program of replacement) in a short time but for now apple have few disks so i have to wait to the replace.
To be able to use my imac i decided to remove the dvd super drive and put an ssd in it. I installed on the ssd lion without problems and it works well (os x recognize the damaged 3.5 disk and sees is as damaged and not working).
So i started to installa windows 7 using an usb key and the boot camp utility. I split the disk in 2 partitions, half for os x (60 gb) and half for windows. At the end the imac rebooted but instead to start the windows installation procedure there was an alternate image of the apple, of a folder with a question mark and a prohibition signal. So to see if the boot mode was right i shut down the mac, i removed the usb key and turned it on, it asks me to insert a boot device, so it tries correctly to start windows.
So i tried to do it again with a dvd external drive, same result. When the 1 internal tb hdd was working i did the same procedure and everything was working... Could it be the damaged disk the problem? Maybe windows tries to write something directly to the first disk and it fails? is there a way to completely disable by default the internal disk?

Did you look at the post just below this here?
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2665592
While it has been done, there are always side effects and downside as well.
And you are up against the 4-partition limit of MBR.

  • Put old I  life on new computer now I photo dosn't work it says cant open because it may be damaged or incomplete so all my pictures can not be accesed how do I get back to I photo or take what I installed off with out losing all my pictures?

I got a new Mac and was trying to burn from I movie to get it to a disk but new I mac dose not have I DVD . So I had my old I Life 11 disc with I DVD on it and I installed it, when I did this it did something to my I photo I can not open it at all it has a message that reads ,you can't open the application IPhoto because it may be damaged or incomplete . Now I can not get or see any of my photos how do I reverse what I did? can I take that I Life back out and how? with out losing all my pictures? and how do you burn to DVDs now without IDVD?

    Diane,
Your photos are in the iPhoto Library. Almost certainly that is intact, so don't worry.
Go to your Home folder and open the folder called Pictures. What you want is in there, iPhoto Library. Don't do anything there, this is just to reassure yourself.
So it is a matter of getting the iPhoto app to work. Apps are in the Applications folder. Find it and trash it.
    Next download iPhoto:

  • Old hard drive damaged; how to upload from iPod to new computer

The hard drive on my old computer was damaged. I had not backed up all of my iTunes library to either a DVD or external drive. My iPod classic has about 6,300 songs. I just purchased a new computer. Is it possible to upload all of the songs on my iPod to the new iTunes library on the new computer? I assume I will get a message telling me that the computer is not authorized. I am not all that tech savvy, so I don't want to hit "sync" and lose all my non-Apple purchased music. Thanks.

Hey there again, here's another answer.
Be very careful when connecting an iPod full of music to an empty iTunes library. There is very real risk of permanently losing all the music.
To prevent auto sync, before you connect the iPod go to the iTunes preferences and select "devices", then select "disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods".
An alternative method is to connect the iPod whilst holding down the 'control+shift' keys and do not let them go until your iPod appears in iTunes.
If you see a message that your iPod is associated with a different library and asks if you want to link to a new one, make sure you press "Cancel".
If you should click on "Erase and Sync" will erase all the content currently on your iPod and it will be replaced with the content of the iTunes library you just connected to.
When you've pressed cancel your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list under "devices" and allow you to change the update setting to manage the iPod content manually, and that will let you use your iPod for the time being without the risk of accidentally erasing the contents.
Then do any of the following to transfer your music from iPod back to the computer/iTunes.
For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.
How to copy iTunes purchases from an iPod or iPhone to a computer.
For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola and iDump and iPodRobot.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • How do I backup the files on to my Macbook Pro 2010 from a damaged external hard drive?

Awhile ago my macbook pro crashed and I had to make a bootable disk of Mountain lion no problem here but I accidentallly deleted all the files off of my hard drive from which i recovered using a PC computer and disk drill. After it had recovered all my files i later tried to put these files on to my macbook computer and disk utility views the drive as damaged and needs to be repaired but in order to do this i have to format it and change the partition and what not. When i try to copy/burn to a CD the finder stops the operation and says that "finder cannot complete the operation because file _catalog cannot be moved" and just recently when i plugged my drive into my computer the sharing permissions say read only. I know that my files are there because when i right click and press get info i see that 5 gb are used but the folder is only showing me 2gb what do i do to get my files onto my computer?
My external hard drive is a WD 1 TB my passport and the partition thats givving my this trouble is formatted to be MS DOS FAT32
    I have parallels Windows 8
I am running Mountain Lion on my Macbook Pro Mid 2010 model

Use Data Rescue on the Mac and out the recovered files to another external drive.
Just grab your users files, the rest you trash. That's all you can do.
    Good Luck
