  • How to recover damaged library?

I have been using iTunes since 4.8 and now using 5.0. Occasionally my library would corrupt for no reason. I wonder what is the best way to recover the damaged library, so I won't have to reload my iPod shuffle again and again. Thanks!

I had this happen to me yesterday. I had my iTunes 5 running for a few days without a restart. I rebooted the computer, then started iTunes. I have a very large library, and so the "Importing songs" progress box came up and was reimporting all my songs for some reason. When it got to the end, I got the Windows XP there was an error would you like to send a report to Microsoft screen. I said no. Then an iTunes error that said the library was corrupt and backed up to a file called ituneslibrary(damaged).itl. I don't know if that helps. This is the first time this has happened to me. I don't know why iTunes tried to reimport my entire library again. Peculiar.
    Todd.

  • How can I fix a (damaged) library file?

I just upgraded to itunes 5 last week. I opened itunes yesterday and it said my library file had been damaged so it renamed it with (damaged)and gave me a new library file without any of my custom playlists, etc... I lost a playlist thats really special to me, is there any way for me to repair my .xml library. I've tried renaming the (damaged) library to the regular library and itunes finds it and says its damaged... Also, I don't think all of the songs in my music folder are showing up. I own alot of CDs and it's going to be a huge pain to go through my 6400 songs and make sure every album is showing up in my .xml file..
Does anyone know a way to fix/debug my damaged .xml library?

    Liz hello,
    for your info....
What are the iTunes 4 library files?
The iTunes library is a database iTunes uses to organize your music. Two iTunes library files are created and maintained by iTunes for different purposes. They're both in the iTunes folder.
    iTunes 4. - 4.8
    /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes 4 Music Library
    /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml
    iTunes 4.9 - 5.x
    /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library
    /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml
    iTunes 4 Music Library/iTunes Library
This file is a database of the songs in your library and the playlists you've created. Some song-specific data is saved in this file. If you delete the file, iTunes creates a new, empty copy when you open the application, but any playlists, song ratings, comments, or other information you created is lost. The iTunes 4 Music Library/iTunes Library file is only used by iTunes.
    iTunes Music Library.xml
This file contains some (but not all) of the same information stored in the iTunes 4 Music Library/iTunes Library files. The purpose of the iTunes Music Library.xml file is to make your music and playlists available to other applications on your computer. In Mac OS X other iLife applications (like iPhoto, iDVD, and iMovie) use this file to make it easier for you to add music from your iTunes library to your projects.

  • HT1751 if i back up my itunes library to an external hard drive and then add subsequent music and want to back that up a few days later, can i backup the only newly added music without backing up the entire library again?

    hello,
if i back up my itunes library to an external hard drive and then add subsequent music and want to back up the newly added music a few days later, can i do it without backing up the entire library again? or do i need to back up the entire library each and every time i back up to the external hard drive?

Just copy Users/yourusername/Music/iTunes (containing your library-files) to your external drive as well as that (extaernal) folder that contains all your audio-tracks.

Your i-device was not designed to be a reliable unique storage for your media. It is not a backup device and everything is structured around you maintaining your media on a computer which is itself backed up. Sync transfer is one way, computer to device, matching the device content to the content on the computer (except purchased content as mentioned below).  For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will probably have to use third party commercial software unless you have an older model iPod. • HT202213 can home sharing link automatically or do I have to connect each time after connection is lost ie if i leave house for day with phone do I have to connect shared library again on phone in evening when back in house?

Can home sharing link automatically or do I have to connect each time after connection is lost ie if i leave house for day with iphone or ipad do I have to connect shared library again on iphone/ipad in evening when back in house? It would be good if it just links automatically

Well then maybe I misunderstood what you meant even though now that you explained it again, I should have though about that.
When you leave the house in the morning with your device, you lose the connection to the library because you are no longer on the same WiFi network as you are at home. You have to be on the same network in order to use Home Sharing. Once you get home again, you have to select the Shared Library again.
I apologize for the confusion or misunderstanding.

  • How to add VI to library again?

I am currently using labview 8.2. Everything was working fine just before I uploaded a backup program for WindowsXP. I now get an error in NI_AALBase.lvlib:Vector x A..vi and complex vector x A.vi.  how can I retreive the library. The error says "This VI is connected with a library that does not include the VI. The VI might have been deleted from the library. Add the VI to the library again or select File»Disconnect from Library."
I tried reloading Labview 8.2 and still get the same error.
Please see the image of the error below.

    Error-lib.JPG ‏94 KB

    Hi Muke,
what are the locations of the 'Vector x A.vi' and 'complex vector x A.vi'? If they are not in the vi.lib (or one of it's subfolders) they are moved (as a backup procedure or something).
In that case do not connect them to the 'NI_AALBase.lvlib' in the vi.lib folder, just disconnect them inside the VI
In the other case, the 'NI_AALBase.lvlib' has changed. This is very strange, what you should do is a repair of LV because maybe other things have changed!

  • Help, damaged library every time itunes opens...

Ok, so this happens a lot, every single time i load itunes i get the damaged library message, usually it goes on to re analysing everything to the same volume, podcast subscriptions gone etc, but today i loaded itunes and there were only 8 songs listed.
ive tried re installing numerous times, nothing seems to help... the problem always re occurs
I keep all my music files on a seperate HD installed inside my machine, its called drive F. itunes is installed on the machines original HD along with all other software. but i had this problem even before i installed and put all my music files onto this hard drive.
Can anyone offer any advice this is very frustrating!

    Hi,
I hav exactly the same problem. Didn't find a solution yet. YOu? It started when I ticked 'use volume check' when buring a cd. I unchecked it, no result. I reinstalled iTunes, no effect.

  • Damaged library - Recovered - Lost 1000 songs !

I have Itunes 10.3.1.55, didn't upgrade to the last version yet. The day before it happened, I sync my ipod and ipad fine. I had 7900 songs in itunes, on a Network Drive...everything was perfect. Now the day after, I reopened Itunes and for unknown reasons, it Was saying that I had a damaged library, Itunes opened with no songs in it !? I went to my Itunes library and found out it has renamed my old library to "Itunes Library (Damaged).itl" and other files like Extras and Genius and xml...all ending with "(Damaged)" at the end of their name.
I restarted Itunes by holding the Shift key so it asked me for a library. I selected the damaged one and it started reimporting everything in Itunes. I was relieved. After hours of extensive work, it told me the library was damaged...so now I got Itunes right, my playlist seem ok but more than 1000 songs are missing in Itunes !? It created a new "Itunes Library (Damaged) 1.itl" with a significant small size compare to the old one. So now I have "itunes library (damaged).itl" at 1,425 kb, "itunes library (damaged) 1.itl" at 232 kb and "itunes library.itl" at 425 kb. Not sure on the sequence of the events too, I guess I would have to look at files' date&time.
    1. should I try to reopen the damage library ? The largest one ? The smallest one ? Will it morelikely empty the current one before reimporting another ?
    2. if not, how could I reimport all my songs (1000 missing) that are still on my drive ? Do I have to identify the missing ones one by one ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Nicolas

  • Making my iTunes Library (damaged) my iTunes library again

So my operating system crashed, and when I restarted the computer, everything was back to normal, but when I went to open my iTunes, it was taking forever to load my iTunes library. I finally just hit Stop and was going to try it again, but then it started really quickly going through a bunch of albums and at the end said that my iTunes Library was renamed iTunes Library (damaged) and then it opened up iTunes with none of my playlists (I had 40+) and only 9,363 songs (before I had almost 22,000). All my music files are still there, but it's just I can't get it to load my old iTunes Library file, which I don't think is actually damaged. Can I tell iTunes to use the "damaged" file somehow? Is there another way to get back my playlists and to have it show all my music in iTunes again besides dragging and dropping my iTunes Library folder into iTunes (which would not give me back my playlists)?
Thank you so much for any help!

Sigh I just found out about holding down the option key while opening iTunes to choose a library, and it turns out my iTunes Library (damaged) file is actually damaged. Is there another way for me to recover my playlists and put my songs back into iTunes? Thanks!

  • Damaged iTunes library, again

This problem is driving me bananas.  I'm getting the dreaded "The file 'iTues Library.itl' does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file.."
All of my media lives on a Lacie external drive.  I've saved all of the media to my desktop, wiped and re-partitioned my external drive multiple times, and have re-imported all of my media.  I've swapped out FW wires, as well as which port on the Lacie I'm using.
iTunes will function properly for a day or two, and then music will start to skip, and ultimately, I'll get the message.
    I'm running iTunes 10.6.3.
I'm running OS 10.6.8 on an Intel iMac.
I've read hundreds of posts and replies, and I cannot figure out how to fix this problem short of continually cleaning my external drive and starting over - which takes about two hours to do every time,
Can anyone offer a suggestion as to how to start at square 1 and reset things so that I'm free and clear of this craziness?
Many thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer -
    Krs

  • I have a damaged library file, and a few questions?

My laptop shut down instantly because of a charger/battery problem and when I started itunes up again I got the message (importing itunes music library.xml) I thought it was going to double my library so I clicked stop and when itunes opened only half of my collection was there and all playlists/smart playlists are gone.
Can someone give me some advice as to how I can bring the songs back into my library with all of the tags I have edited, (Album, Comments, Sort Album, Genre etc..)
I had the option to copy files to itunes music folder checked, so does that mean that every edit I made in itunes would change the file names in the music folder?
I still have the Itunes database file - (iTunes Library (Damaged) (date modified 15/01/2012 12:02). But there is no exact file called (itunes music library.xml)
I do have a some sort of document with that name listed as an XML Document (date modified 15/01/2012 13:55) (about 2 hours after the problem occurred) but it just opens a webpage. I can also open it in a notepad etc.. and it brings up loads of encoding detail.
Is there any way to restart that XML import?
I am sure I still have most of, if not all of my music, but it's very important for me to get back the tag info.
It would also be great if I can get back the smart playlists and date added, but this is the least important.
I'm in the middle of a slow process of transferring the itunes folder to my old laptop to see how it looks before I make any changes here, but I'm not sure how many songs I had exactly, do you think there would be any reason songs got deleted because of this? There are no songs in my itunes collection stored in folders other than the itunes folder.
You are saving my life if you can help me here.
    Thanks.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps youshouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • DAMAGED LIBRARY, SKIPPING TRACKS, HELP PLEASE!

I'm really hoping to get some help here, because I'm super bummed out about this. The other day Itunes on my laptop started skipping during one of the tracks that was playing. I didn't know what was going on, so I figured maybe it was my computer so I did a "disk clean up" and then defragmented my harddrive with Auslogic. Re-started my laptop, then openned up Itunes.
I got the message "Importing library" and after taking forever I got an error message saying something like, "Library damaged..." and it changed the file to "damaged". Once Itunes finally openned up, it said something about "gapless information" (sorry I don't remember the EXACT messages) and it ran through all of the tracks I had in Itunes. NOW I have a ton of problems with Itunes on my laptop:
*almost all the tracks now skip, it seems real hit or miss, the albums I purchased through the Itunes Store, as well as albums that I got from cds are all incredibly jacked up for the most part
*other tracks that I downloaded outside of Itunes are also skipping
*all of the TV shows that I purchased through Itunes are all showing that I never watched them (you know how they have that little bullet next to them if its a new file you haven't watched) even though I've seen all of them, plus a "TV Shows" playlist was created that I never made
*all of the podcasts I had subscribed to are all gone, instead a "Podcast" playlist was created where all the podcasts I have have all been moved to
*a number of the standard default playlists are all back, even though I had deleted them a long time ago to cut down on the number of playlists I had on my iPod
*now Itunes is showing "Playcount" and "Last Time Played" even though I had previously set up Itunes NOT to show them
Whew. That's about all I can think of. I've tried listening to some of the music I had downloaded outside of Itunes through Windows Media Player, and it skips there too. So I don't know if the problem is with Itunes or if my entire library is just completely jacked and unrecoverable.
I should say that after experiencing these problems with Itunes I never synced my Ipod back to my computer, so everything is still set up on my Ipod and plays perfectly, just like how I had it. If I had to could I upload my library from my Ipod back to Itunes so I could have all my music again?
Please help me. I literally listen to music pretty much all throughout the waking day. Either on my computer or on my Ipod while driving, working out, or at work. I really, really don't want to have to accept that I've lost my entire library after spending hundreds of dollars with the Itunes Store and spending thousands of hours downloading, searching, catalouging, all that. I would really, really appreciate the help.

Someone please help me out here. I've tried un-installing and reinstalling Itunes and the exact same symptoms were still there. So far I haven't synced my Ipod to my computer in over a week because I want to keep my music, but also this means that I'm not getting anymore podcasts or anything, no new music at all to my Ipod, plus I can't listen to music at home anymore because it skips. Someone please help me.

  • Damaged Library Files/ itunes unable to save library file

I would really appreciate it if somebody would take the time to read this and help if possible. We have 4 Ipods in my family and all of us are experiencing this problem with our libraries, so you can imagine the frustration.
I get this error message every times I open itunes:
    1st: This appears: "Importing I-Tunes Library.xml....."
2nd :"The file ITuneslibrary.itl does not appear to be a valid ITunes library file. ITunes has attempted to recover your ITunes library and renamed this file to "ITunes Library (damaged).itl"
When Itunes opens there are no songs in my library.
I can rebuild my library and all my playlists but it continues to happen on subsequent openings of the program and it will attach a number after the (damaged).....and will just add on numerically each time I get the error.
Once I rebuild the library and playlists, a process that takes hours, I get this
    error while in itunes:
"The itunes library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-1450)"
Thus, I am continually starting completely over with my library, playlists, etc every time I connect my ipod or go into itunes. I have tired removing itunes and reinstalling the program but the same errors occur. This has been happening for several months. I have seen numerous posts on this topic but nobody every answers. We have 4 Ipods in my family and all of us are experiencing this, so you can imagine the frustrtation. Can anybody help?
    Thanks

Look man, I've had a personal experience with this error myself, and I know how frustrating this is. I have found a very probable solution, so this is my post from another thread that should hopefully solve your problem. Believe me, I know first hand what this error does. Here it is....
"I may have found a solution for some of you and possibly me for this problem. I found this article while searching google and it seemed to make perfect sense. It's an issue with memory or virtual memory. Cuz this "error" seemed to appear after I had nearly 2000 songs in my library. I don't think it had enough memory to save the library because it was way to big.
Here's the article: http://sonnoprofondo.net/tech/2006/41 I'm pretty that's the only problem causing this error. Good luck!"
*Let me know if this was your solution*. I just know first hand what this is entails and how I've spent many nights trying to get rid of it. Now, I'm trying to help anyone I can because I don't want other people to go through what I had to. Best of luck!!!
*Here's a thread that may also be of help from this forum.*

Btw, this isn't guranteed to work, but it has fortunately worked for me. It seems to be an error specifically with windows for some reason. itunes has worked flawlessly for me now for about 3 weeks and I am very happy. If it doesn't work let me know and i'll see if I have any more suggestions. Again, good luck!!

  • Damaged library & restoring

I got the 'library may be damaged' message; I've followed the advice I found here, but can't get my playlists back. I think most of my music is there, but I can't tell for sure, and I see no sign of my apps.
When I sync my iPod Touch, will what's in iTunes automatically copy to my iPod, or vice versa? If the former, is there anything I can do to avoid that?
    Thanks,
    Peggy

I followed the instructions in HT1589 and got my playlists back, as they were 9Sep09.
This is certainly less than perfect, but basically what I'm missing now is app info after that date. I don't buy much music, so I think that's OK. Apps and iTunesU dls are free to dl again, and they're still on my hard drive anyway.
