Darwin

What do you do if your computer on startup goes to a black screen with the message "Darwin/BSD + (computer name)"?

Hi,
I just got the same message/screen on my Powerbook G4. I have tried all the usual stuff but no good. I am currently attempting to 'repair' the problem with TECH TOOL PRO 4 . Have booted the mac from the TTP CD and it is currently going through a surface scan, identifying bad blocks. I dont know if this is going to work but I will let you know. Very frustrating. Never encountered anything like this before.......that I couldn't find a simple solution to.
I did however access my files through another Powerbook via our Airport broadband network, so I might just back-up my files and reinstall .
If anyone has an answer to this , love to hear it.
regards, thanks

  • Michael C stopped my MacBook booting into Darwin/BSD, but it is now sloooow

I am testing a MacBook 2.16 GHz for possible use at work. Upgraded to 3GB RAM and Hitachi 200GB HD. Performance was great after a week, but one day I got a dark screen at bootup with the Darwin/BSD-login-password message that a lot of people seem to get. I followed Michael Conniff's advice (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4550428) and got the system to boot into the GUI properly. But ever since then performance has been very slow: e.g. selecting the Date and Time takes 5 seconds to launch and clicking on the AirPort icon takes the same amount of time to produce the drop-down menu. It's like the MacBook is running in slow-motion. The exception is the Dock: it pops up quickly and the Apps scroll by quickly. Launching the Apps is another matter, though.
NO OTHER APPS INSTALLED. Really. No MS programs or even freeware. Just iLife '08. All the current updates have been installed. Zapped the PRAM, ran Disk Utility to check the disk and verify permissions--even booted into single-user mode and ran fsck (disk was okay). Tonight I reinstalled the OS in a clean install, installed all the updates, and afterwards the MacBook is just as slow. What is going on? If it's this slow, I guess I won't be using Parallels anytime soon to replace my Dell!

Well, this has been frustrating. The original hard disk also will occasionally boot into Darwin and menu selection is still very sluggish. The local Apple Store won't touch an Apple recertified MacBook--even one that was just delivered a couple of days ago from the Apple Store Online. I then spent several hours on the phone, mostly on hold, but sometimes transferred in a closed loop from Customer Support to Tech Support and back to Customer Support. Sadly, the case number I was given by a rep (the third one I spoke to) isn't showing up as valid either. At this point I just want to return the MacBook (which I think I still can), but I can't reach anyone to arrange for this!

  • My iBook G4 only goes to a black 'Darwin' screen when it boots up. How do I get it to boot up normally again?

Last night, my iBook G4 started showing odd glitches on the screen. When I restarted it, there was a file with a blinking question mark, so I consulted the manual and it said to shut down, hold 'Option' and turn on the computer, then click the hard disk icon and then the rightward arrow. When I did these things, it led me to a black screen where something called 'Darwin' asked me for my login and password. I managed to restart from the OSX install disc and repair the hard disk volume that way, but the black 'Darwin' screen shows up every time I turn the laptop on! What should I do to get it back to normal? My iBook G4 has OSX 4.11 installed, and I bought it refurbished in June 2005.

Thank you so much for replying; unfortunately, my screen had already gone gray by the time I read your reply and I had to take in to the Genius Bar. My laptop's up and running, but the main problem is still unknown and I'll have to buy a new one soon. Thanks again!

    "has forgotten the password"
From the information supplied, I'd guess that the machine has been loaded with OS X 10.2 (Jaguar). You need the 10.2 installation disc to reset the password.
It is not wise to buy any Mac without all the original installation discs, and any discs required for a later OS which may have been installed.
It won't boot from a USB stick or USB drive. It may be possible to boot from a firewire external drive running OS X 10.2 or later, or in firewire target mode from another OS X Mac. It won't boot from an external DVD drive.
That model originally shipped with OS9 and either OS X 10.0 or 10.1 (neither of which was worth installing).
    <350 MHz / 512 K / L2 64 MB / 6 GB / 24 CD / 56k>
Presumably this is the specification printed on the underside of the casing, in which case 6GB is the original HD size. The model did later ship with up to 40GB however, and it's certainly possible that it may have been replaced.
One caveat; some 6GB models could only be booted from a 6GB or smaller partition, so any upgrade would have to be partitioned accordingly.
If you get hold of a retail OS X disc 10.2 or later (but not 10.5), BSD is available from the installer as an optional installation (with the main OS). It's unlikely the previous owner would have installed it however.
Can't help you much further than that I'm afraid, but I'm sure there'll be another bus along in a minute

  • Is Darwin DOS in a Mac case? How do I get back to Panther?

Does anyone know why my computer would stop its regular OSX 10.3.9 boot up, and default to a black welcome to Darwin screen. The screen is similar to a DOS screen. Scary, I thought this stuff didn't happen to macs! When I get to the screen the computer proceeds to ask me for user name and password. After typing that in, the computer it logs me in, but the rest is a foreign. I don't know what command to type in to make OS X start. I thought about trying to reboot the computer from the cd rom, but I cant even get the cd rom to open. Weird! Is there anyone out there that might know what to do? Some Genius that may know Darwin. The commands that is! I'd highly appreciate anyones help. PLEEEEEEEEASE HELLLLLLLP!

    G4 1.25 Dual   Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    G4 1.25 Dual   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

sounds like it is booting in single-user mode, this gives you a login without the gui, instead you get a unix shell
once you've loggged in and get the command prompt, type...
    reboot
    ...and hit the enter key
this will shutdown the mac and restart it, it should then boot normally
if you still get the same after reboot, then put the osx disk in the drive, then login and reboot again
this time hold down the C key as the mac shuts down and restarts, once it starts booting it should load from the osx disk

  • Creating a network topology with Darwin

    Hello,
here are some questions concerning the neural net module at Darwin. I would be grateful if anyone can answer some of my questions:
    1. sensitivity analysis: How is importance/sensitivity of each independent variable to the model measured ? (E.g. by measuring the %-increase of the train error if specific variable is taken out of the model ? )
    2. Darwin provides the user with three types of activation functions: linear, sigmoid and hypertangent. In a paper with the title "Darwin: A scalable integrated System for Data Mining" , May 14 1997, accessible throug the ORACLE web-sites, some more activation functions have been mentioned : Heaviside, sinusoidal etc. The (most recent) release Darwin 3.7, has only three different activation functions. How can different activation functions be added. I would like to know that, because many application examples from the financial sector used the Gaussian or Radial basis (RBF) function to develop models in financial analysis (portfolio management, prediction of financial crisis etc.)
MOST IMPORTANT QUESTIONS CONCERNING DEVELOPMENT OF NETWORK ARCHITECTURE AND NETWORK TRAINING:
-> Please refer again to "Darwin: A Scalable Integrated System for Data Mining
Overview of Darwin's philosophy, architecture, and functionality for 2.x and 3.x releases, 1997" , May 14 1997, accessible throug the ORACLE web-sites on http://datamining.us.oracle.com/
    3. p. 7 : The train and cross-validation mode includes an efficient implementation of the cross validation method for choosing the optimale size of network. It takes advantage of the properties of the error surface, and trains multiple networks with only a marginal increase in time needed for training a single network.
As the notion "Cross-Validation" and especially algorithms using "cross-validation"-techniques to develop a network topology have throughout literature completely different definitions and underlying ideas, may you please explain your understanding of cross-validation by clarifying the algorithm for selection of single-hidden-layer neural net as described above.
    4. Learning curve analysis: Does exist a bootstrap loop for the evaluation of a learning curve ? How was the learning curve, as it is presented in the paper above, developed with the aid of a bootstrap-loop explained on p. 11
    5. Most recent results in research on generalization performance and its relation to the development of an architecture of a neural net, assume/stress again that overtraining is only an effect of a misspecified, too high machine complexity. Therefore, in this case, conventional training&test-mode is not appropriate for traing a learning machine of optimal complexity.
Consequently, the idea of stopped-training is ambiguous. Only a learning machine with a too high complexity, is capable of approximating the intrinsic noise in the data.
The generalization performance of a learning machine of optimal complexity (i.e.no under-, no overfitting) increases asymptotically without turning point. (in this case: test error decreases asymptotically with the number of training iterations)
    Own experiences, results, comments ?
Please note : Following article could answer this question from a more theoretical viewpoint, but hasn't been available to me yet:
Wang, C., Venkatesh, S. S. and Judd, J. S. 1994. Optimal Stopping and Effective Machine Complexity in Learning.
Advances in Neural Networks Processing Systems, G. Tesauro, D. S. Touretzky and T. K. Leen Eds. MIT Press.
    Vol. 7, p239.
    6. Does Darwin provide the user with a visualization tool in order to illustrate the process of learning by showing network weights? If not, how can this be implemented with the help of Darwin.
This has often been defined as "monitoring" in order to show development of network weights and to make some conclusions.
    7. Genetic Algorithms: Can you specify the exact values of the parameters used in the genetic algorithm for network training? E.g. the defined value of the probability of mutation. Please note, that different parameter values (e.g. probability of mutation) used in the genetic algorithm have an effect on the performance of the search for a global optimum .
    8. Genetic Algorithm : Why does the g
genetic algorithm has a learning rate ? Normally Genetic Algorithm do not have learning rates, please explain this parameter.
Learning rate are only know for gradient descemt algorithms.
    9. Key-field wizzard: How is the importance of an independent variable towards the dependent variable measured ? Which is the underlying correlation coefficient ? The Darwin Help explains the two options to calculate the importance: Gini and cost.
    10. E.g. why not use IBM intelligent miner for data preparation instead ORACLE Darwin, because Intelligent miner has two very important processes for data preparation in order to clean data from multi-collinearity:
    - factor analysis
    - principal component analysis (delivers same results)
    null

I have a very similar setup and I'd be happy just to be able to get my MacBook to print to the HP6213!
Are there any guidelines out there for setting up to print to a printer connected to a Windoze infected PC?
    btw
I suspect you'd need a printer with a LAN card onboard to be able to print to it without using the Windows machine as a print server.

    Dave

  • Installed new software, after restart black screen with Darwin/BSD promt

    Hi
I have been struggling with thisissue. I installed some new software, a webcam driver called ilook 1321. I restarted my computer but forgot to take the disc out!
Now when I start my ibook G4 i get the black screen with Darwin/BSD (localhost) (console) and login. It accepts my usual login and password, then tells me my last login details and leaves me with localhost: Clarekristensen$.
I have done the disk utility repair, no problems, I also did the fcsk commands, but still goes back to the Darwin command.
I tried to do the Repair disk permissions but this failed with the message "no valid packages". On disc check I saw I had 25.6 gb of space left.
I am now at a complete loss what to do next. I have not backed up for a while so really don't want to re-install Mac OS X and wipe my disk.
    Hopefully yours
    Clarek BsD

Hi Clarek BsD, and a warm welcome to the forums again!
    On that error...
Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4: Disk Utility shows a "No Valid Packages" alert...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25704-no
    Here's the steps I'd take...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
If it can't repair for any reason, stop here and report back.
Appears to be time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

  • Can't stop getting Darwin/BSD login; can't log in or start up in Safe Mode

Hi. I'm on an iBook G4 and I think I'm running OS 10.4.1 but I'm unsure. When I turned on my computer tonight, the grey screen popped up, but instead of going to my normal login screen, it went to the black Darwin/BSD screen.
After searching the Support site here as well as Googling, I logged into the Darwin screen and did... something with fsck. At the #root prompt, I typed in /sbin/fsck/ -fy. The screen said that if I wanted to continue checking, I needed to type in "-f", I think, so I did... It said there were "overlapping extent allocation errors" and then it said that it had repaired something. But it didn't say the hard disk "appeared to be okay."
I then (foolishly?) tried to restart my computer in Safe Mode, but it booted in Darwin again.
I then tried to log back into the Darwin screen, but this time it didn't let me -- I type in my username and password and it tells me my password is incorrect. So now I'm worried that I screwed something up during my adventures in fsck.
I also am unable to find the disk that came with my iBook (I honestly don't remember an OS X disk coming with my iBook, but it must've), so I can't reboot from the disk.
I have a desktop G4 with an older version of OS X (10.3, I think)... I'm not sure if I can use that to do Target Disk Mode for this problem or not. (That computer also doesn't have internet access; I'm typing right now from my sister's PC.)
    Help?

    Juhme:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
First, I suggest that you try this fix suggested by Michael Conniff in this thread.
Next, since it is possible that the fix may not work for you, and you may need to re-install or Archive and Install, you will need to have install disks. Tiger can be purchased from the Apple Store or, on CDs, from applerescue.
If you do not have a backup of your data, yes, using Firewire Target Disk Mode will be one way to rescue your data at this point. If you need assistance with this please post back.
    Good luck.

  • G4 Cube, External Hard drive, and Darwin oh my!

I was given a G4 cube that was having difficulties booting up. At some point in time someone upgraded the hard drive from 30GB to 120GB...When I first got it, I inserted the OS 10.4 DVD and ran a disk utility, repaired permissions, erased the hard drive and tried to do a clean install of 10.4.6. This worked fine. When the computer booted up, I went through the initial setup and updates. When the updates finished downloading, I got various error messages including "the digital signature for this package is incorrect," "invalid checksum," "codec error" etc. My intention for this computer is to put 10.4.11 on it and connect it to my TV to use as a server for music. After a while, the computer stopped working so I had to repeat the process. This time around I loaded 10.4.6 and then did the updates one by one 10.4.7, 10.4.8 etc...I made it all the way to 10.4.10 and when I installed 10.4.11 and restarted the computer, it booted up in Darwin. I gave up for a few days, but then found my old Lacie external drive. I loaded 10.4.6 on the drive, changed my startup disk, did the updates, and haven't had a single problem since then. It seems so obvious that the hard drive in the cube is defective, but I dont want to spend $75 dollars for a computer shop to tell me that. What do you guys think? If it is defective, I will likely by a new one to replace it with and install it myself...(it looks really really easy). Any thoughts, suggestions, ideas for good internal hard drives? Let me know!!

Sounds like the cube's drive is flaky, all right. I'd give it a shot one more time, in case the initial 10.4.6 install wasn't quite kosher. I'd also make sure all the connections are tight. Otherwise, a new HD is indicated.
Two things to be aware of with Cubes:
They use EIDE, aka PATA drives, which are quickly becoming obsolete and harder to find.
They will natively only handle drives up to 128GB in size. If you install a larger drive, the cube will only see 128GB. For OS 10.2 and later, there is a work-around documented here:
    http://4thcode.blogspot.com/2007/12/using-128-gib-or-larger-ata-hard-drives.html
See www.cubeowner.com for all sorts of cube-related info. It's where cubists hang out.
Another possible but less likely problem is someone also replaced the DVD ROM drive. The optical drive in a cube has to be configured as "slave" and the HD as "master" (not "cable select"). Most laptop optical drives like the cube uses are fixed as "master" at manufacture, so if one of those is plugged in, you have two master drives and neither works reliably. If that were the case, you wouldn't have gotten as far as you did before crashing.

  • BSD/Darwin Names of Hard Disk Drives

Hello! A question just out of curiosity:
In what order does Mac OS X assign names/numbers to the system's hard disks?
I am wondering because I mounted an old 2.5" inch drive (originally from my tangerine iBook) formated as MBR/FAT32 into a G4-533 (digital audio). The 2.5" jumpered as slave/secondary and the 3.5" boot drive as master/primary (parallel-ATA of course).
The first time I stated up, the 3 GB small FAT-formated laptop-drive got BDS/Darwin-name disk0 and my 60GB boot drive got disk1.
However, after I reinitialized the small 3GB to ApplePartionTable/MacOS Extended and rebooted again it became disk1 and my boot-drive got disk0 - as previously awaited.
Do somebody know the rules MacOS is using when assigning disk names/numbers?
    Thanks for feeding my curiosity.
    Regards A.

It can't be the master/slave-config. The small 3 GB drive is manually jumpered as slave.
(Not before I put a jumper-bridge between 2 pins, changing the 3 GB-drive to slave-mode, the G4 was able to boot up. I vaguely remember a knowledge-base article explaining that "Cable select" is originally only used in Mirrored Drive Door-G4s and some older 2002-Quicksilvers.)
What triggered my curiosity was the fact, that even the drive was slave and it was FAT32 formatted, at the first startup it became assigned as "drive0" and my original boot disk became drive1. However since I reformatted the Fujitsu to HFS+ (journalled) it is now and permanently assigned drive1.
The theory that it's just a question which drive boots up quicker, that will become drive0, seems plausible to me. I also assume that sinple DOS-formatted drives are faster online than the more complicated HFS+ formatted ones. This would explain the change in the drive-numbers after reformatting.
But this is just a guess

  • My ibook G3 trapped in darwin window, help!

    hi All,
my Ibook G3 was "trapped" in the "Darwin / console" window for 3 days and please kindly let me know how can i fix the problem and your advise are really appreciate, thanks & situations listed as below:
iBook G3, OS 10.3 (or higher with update)
day 1 : my OS9 is down so i start to use the OS10.3 platform and perform the rebuild the desktop for OS9, and also perform the disk repair from the install disk but all fail to use the OS9 platform. Then i install another new system(OS10.3) but i can't login (i don't know the login name & password)...
day 2/3 : so i use the install disk to reset the password but i think i do something wrong and more problems found - i was trapped in the "Darwin" window and i try the solution from this forum already (ie: start in Single mode, mount -uw /, chown root /, chmod 1775 /, exit), and i also use the intall disk to perform the "repair permission" command, but the black darwin screen still appears and says :
    Darwin/BSD (mms-Computer.local.) (console)
    login:
please let me know how can i fix the problem? and thank you so much!
    bill

In that case you had best find a say to backup what you don't want to lose. And in the future you should maintain backups to prevent having this type of problem.
    Basic Backup
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete FireWire drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • How can I startup from my hard drive instead of Darwin/BSD screen?

    Hi,
I have read most of the forum that was discussed regarding about the darwin/bsd screen. I still can not find the solution to solving my problem.
After using the Disk Warrior disc as a startup to fix the directory, and restarting the computer. It startup from the Disk Warrior disc again. After i took out the disc, this is when the darwin/bsd screen appears.
    I had tried the following:

    desepartely seeking help

    Hi!
I am not sure if you have seen this solution to Darwin/BSD screen, but it has worked for others: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=320663&start=15&tstart=0
If Option booting does not get you to boot off your external boot drive there a couple of things I can think of:
    1. Hold down the "X" key from a cold start while you hit the power button.
    2. Boot from the Installer CD, then go to the Installer Menu and choose startup drive.
    3. A third, for good measure. It never hurts to Reset the PRAM, and often helps. Reset PRAM (from a cold start hold down Command + Option + P + R while hitting the power button and holding for 3 chimes. Release and allow to boot.
Hope at least one of these help.
    Good luck.

Get your files off the boot drive to a external drive.   Not to the Seagate drive.
Any files on the Seagate drive, copy them off as well.
Hold c and boot off the installer disk 10.6, reinstall OS X.
These kexts are a bit strange and might be causing your issue. 10.6.8 broke a lot of third party kexts.

  • IMac G5 Goes to Darwin Prompt after User Password is Entered at Login! Help

I have just made a fresh installation of the Mac OSX in my iMac G5 after some problems of its repeated powering off. It worked fine after the re-installation but when I tried to boot it up the morning after and after logging in on the start-up page, it took me to a prompt again asking for a user name and password. After Darwin identifies me, I expected it to boot up but it does'nt and keeps me on a prompt. Please help! I am a layman and I do not know these things. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

    Sarbit, welcome to the discussions!
I had my midplane and PSU replaced back last August and have not seen anything that would make me believe that I will have a recurrence of the problem. Fortunately, if I do I am still covered for another year under the warrantee extension, as are you.

  • How do you determine what version of  the Darwin Kernel, iOS 4.3.3 uses in iPod Touch?

I tried looking this up in "Settings" > "General" > "About" but it doesn't give me this information.
Someone told me that he has Darwin Kernel 11.0.0 for his iPod Touch running iOS 4.3.3, but his iPod Touch is jailbroken. My iPod Touch isn't jailbroken, and I want to know what version of Darwin Kernel it is running. On Wikipedia, someone documented that the Darwin Kernel 11 begins with iOS 5--for a jailbroken iOS 5 device. I find this odd if my buddy has Darwin Kernel 11.0.0 for his device running iOS 4.3.3. Well, as all intelligent people know, we can't trust Wikipedia completely.

Why do apple refer to the products by generation and then not actually include that information on the product?
    beats me.
you can inform Apple of your displeasure by leaving a comment via iPod Touch Feedback.
