Database always down after OS startup

I have my Windows 2003 Server (SP1) and Oracle database 10g release 2 installed.
On the day I installed these two, everything worked just fine.
One day after that and on, everytime I boot up my OS, the database is always in 'shutdown' phase (but the listener is up).
So I have to startup my database in open mode everytime I boot up.
The enterprise manager console tells me that "TNS Listener does not know the SID in the connect descriptor". This is strange, because I didn't change my listener.ora and tnsnames.ora since installation.
Could somebody help me with this problem?
Is this problem inherent in Oracle database 10g Release 2?
P.S.: I have been using release 1, but this never happened even months after installation under windows 2003 server.
Many thanks,
(Mario Andretti)

If I understand correctly, the Enterprise Manager is telling you the database is being shutdown. Is that correct?
If so, perhaps it's an enterpriser manager console issue, not a database issue.
What does the ControlPanel>AdministrationTools>Services show for the Oracle service?
Can you log on the database using sqlplus?

Oh, and iIRC, by default the 10gR2 Enterprise Manager likes to work on a different port than the 10gR1 one did. Are you using the right port?

Windows 7 home premium pc keeps powering down after startup The only thing I have noticed different is the heat sink fan RPMS rev quicker and seem to stay reved for longer periods. The COMPONENTS ARE DUST FREE. Components do not feel warm to the touch. Ventalation Is over done. The pc will no longer run long enough to do a lot of testing. I will be honest I do not know much, so lets change testing to trial and error.

  • How to find out why my MBP will always try to shut down after 1 hour

    Dear all,
this is a question too complicated for me to answer; I have previously tried to solve this problem in a usenet forum (comp.sys.mac.system) - but we didn't get it solved there, and I finally gave up on it. However, it still persists, and it is so annoying that I want to try another approach on it this time using the Apple Discussions Forum.
The problem is as follows: my relatively new (bought in december '09) MacBook Pro 13" (2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM) has a problem: always when I leave it untouched for one hour, something within the system would try to make the computer shut down (system halt). Please note right that this seems NOT to be a hardware-related issue (al least not simply a bad mother-board or sth. similar - there are a lot of threads about MacBooks that seem to shut down immediately, like fainting - this is not the case here). Instead, the system behaves like anytime when a user-requested shut down is invoked - for example, the running applications would check if any changes should be saved, and ask questions. The only thing is: I did not request a system shut down, and even more: I do not WANT the system to shut down. In fact, this whole problem is extremely annoying, since it constantly messes up my open documents (e.g. the TextMate workspace I usually set up, or similar things), forcing me to reestablish my workspace at least once a day. Over time, this can be very annoying for a computer that's used for work!!
During the course of my earlier discussions in the forum, we tried to find out what makes the computer go down - looking through the system log files etc. - but to no avail: we couldn't trace back the event that has caused the system to invoke the shut down procedure. However, it seems that this issue is related to the Mac operating system, and not the hardware - and this is why I ask this question here (and not in the MacBook Pro section). It may be that we simply didn't look in the right place - or not with the right tools - and I hope that there may be some people here with some new ideas how to trace the reason for this procedure. Everything I can tell now with some certainty (and I couldn't do it before in the usenet forum) is that the shutdown seems to be invoked about one hour after the system has been left untouched by a user (no key strokes, no mouse movements); I know this because I use my Mac for a wake up call now - and, since I sometimes need more than an hour for that, I can tell that this problem causes iTunes to quit one hour after the Mac has booted (which makes my wake-up music to switch off... and some of the running applications with no changes to save).
It would be very important for me to solve and remove this annoying problem, and I think that this really shouldn't happen! Needless to say, I haven't set the energy savings settings such that the system would shut down after one hour (in fact, I have set the system to always stay on when attached to a power supply); still, the problem prevails.
Does anyone of You specialists have a good clue or smart suggestion where (or probably how) else to look to find out what causes the shutdown? Thanks a lot for taking the time and considering this annoying problem!
    Best,
    Björn

Yes - it is a bit frightening... Had other Macs before this MacBook (Pro), and never experienced such a problem. Don't know - of course I look into the Preference settings from time to time, and maybe I have changed that setting on the other computers... it never occurred to me...
What an annoyance such a simple decision to make the auto-shutdown after one hour a default can be! Probably, Apple reconsiders :-D I'd rather prefer an auto-lock of the account (instead of an auto-log off)... but I believe it has been expressed often enough that, in this particular case, the - pardon me - Windows-solution (to offer a simple lock of the account, the Windows-L-key combination, IIRC) is much more practical... to copy that behaviour under Mac OS X, You'd have to go through lengths...
Anyway! Pondind, thank You very much!!! Solved a kind of embarassing, but huge problem of mine!
    Best,
    Björn

  • Database Down after Server Reboot

    Hello
I am getting a weird problem after I reboot my server (windows 2003) where by my database (10.2) does not automatically start. To get it to start I have to go into administrative tools >> services and then manually restart the OracleASMService+ASM (it says it is already running).
Thanks in advance for any Idea's/suggestions

    Right;
After rebooting the server and lauching the OEM Database Control it tells me the following:
    - Database Instance = Down
    - Listener = Up
    - Agent Connection to Instance = Failed ORA-12505: TNS:Listener does not currently know of SID given in connect descriptor(DBD ERROR: OCIServerAttach)
    In response to your troubleshooting suggestions;
    1. alert.log has no new errors logged in the past week
    2. As far as I can tell, yes. It says the service (and other associated oracle services) are running
    3. No I can not connect to the database with sql*plus (before I restart the OracleASMService+ASM). SQL*Plus errors:
    ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist
After I restart the service I can connect without any problems.
    4. N/A
I appreciate any help you can offer on this matter.
    Regards
    Toby

  • Quicksilver shuts down after startup chime

    Hello,
I got an old Quicksilver 2002 (933) which won't boot : it shuts down 3 or 4 seconds after the startup chime. What's wrong ?
    Thanks

Thank you for your answer, but it didn't work.
I forgot something important in my first post : the story of this Quicksilver
So yes, I just acquire this Mac, didn't work at all. It was missing a screw on the CPU card. After adding the screw, the PM booted into my Tiger DVD. I shut down the PM to close it correctly. It didn't boot anymore for this time.
I tried PRAM reset, motherboard reset. I've taken apart all I could (modem, graphic card, hard drive, ...), I've replaced the PSU, but nothing. I noticed that when I try to boot without RAM, the powermac makes one beep (no RAM installed) but don't shut down after that ! So I tried with 2 different RAM modules on every RAM slot, but it didn't work. (each RAM module is PC133 and works fine on my iMac G3 DV SE).
I think the motherboard or the CPU is screw up, but which one ? Maybe I forgot one thing to make it work ?
    Cheers, Aurélien

My computer shuts down after about two minutes of use or at startup. What is the problem?
Yesterday I used it for about ten minutes.
Yesterday was the first time using it after about 5 days.

Could you tell me how to check my system log, and how to tell if it is the disk cache? I am pretty sure it is not the GPU as I was having the problem using a Quadro 4000 as well.
    Thanks!

  • TS4185 My Face Time always shuts down after using it for about a minute. Can anybody suggest a way to stop this happening?

Hi. My Face Time continuisely shuts itself down after about a minute of use. Can anyone suggest what might be causing this and how I can sort it out. This only happens on my MacBook Pro and not on any of my other devices.

Creating a new profile and deleting the old one seemed to fix the problem. Why the problem occurred in the first place, is beyond me. But after creating the new profile, restoring all my bookmarks, and reinstalling Flashgot, everything seems to be behaving wonderfully. For anyone else having similar issues, I recommend creating the new profile. It's easy to do, as long as you save your old one, so you can copy all the necessary files to restore your preferences and bookmarks.

  • System Slow-Down After Printing

I recently installed Mountain Lion. Over the last couple of weeks I have noticed a significant operating system (10.8.2) slow down after printing with my Epson R3000 printer. This happens after every printing session. When I say slow-down I mean significant delays and dreading "beachballs" when opening applications, selecting menu items or anything else I should choose to do. I'm left with re-starting the computer to get going normally again. After re-atarting I have gone to "verify permissions" and I get approx "5" pages of permission errors, all associated with the printer library in some fashion or another. I then repair all those permissions and re-start my MacPro. The operating system then works as normal and I can use the computer with no problems (until I start printing again). I mainly use the computer for photo editing with Adobe Photoshop CS6, Adobe Lightroom 4 and Aperture 3.2.
I did not have this problem before upgrading to Mountain Lion (and then to 10.8.2). I did not get "significant" permission errors before upgrading. Since all printer drivers for this printer are handled now by Apple via the "new" Software Update process I can't even re-download the Epson printer driver and start over. I'm completely at a loss as to what, associated with the printer function, is causing these "significant" permission errors and subsequent operating system slow down. My printer is almost brand new and was working flawlessly before Mountain Lion. Let me be clear though, I can print fine. My problem is the system slow down after using the print function which I am only guessing has something to do with the "5" pages of permission errors after printting photos (with CS6/Lightroom/Aperture).
Incidently, I am not in any way a computer expert. Verifying and repairing permissions is about all I know how to do that's why I need help. I also just thought I would try the forums first before going to technical support to see what people thought about this.
Again, I repair the permission errors, re-start my system and all is fine. Any further suggestions would be deeply appreciated.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

  • How to detect if  Database is down when client application is running?

    Hi,
I have a oracle Forms application accessing a remote database. While doing processing, application has to post some data in a remote database.
As of now, when the Forms client is running and remote database is down, the client hangs.
I have tried Creating a timer before remote database procedure call in the FORMS Trigger and checking in the when_timer_expired trigger, if a specific duration has passed or not. This doesn't work as timer fires only after the remote procedure call completes and other SQL statements in the FORMS trigger where i have created the timer completes.
I Know sqlcode -3113 can be of help.
Hope someone can help me with a solution/suggestion.
    Thanks
    Hari

    interesting situation.
what about issuing the select count(*) into cnt from dual, if cnt>0 then do post.
better to setup the remote database has fail-over to another node.

  • Windows 7 boot camp screen goes black after windows startup screen!!!!!!

A few days ago when I tried to start my MacBook Pro in windows 7 (enterprise) I encountered a completly black screen after the startup screen.
    1) Choose start in Windows 7 from boot camp menu (holding option after starting up computer)
    2) Windows start up screen would appear and finish
    3) For a very brief second my cursor pointer would appear and login screen would flash onto the screen, then the screen would go black
    BUT
I CAN boot windows 7 in safe mode
The computer is still on when screen goes black (fan still running and i can use keyboard commands to shut down the computer)
I've been searching the Internet for DAYS to no avail
PLEASE someone help me....... ive already tried the sfc /scannow and dskchk commands in the command prompt window

Win 7 Enterprise is not supported by Boot Camp, you may or may not get it to work reliably, (I would not bother to try)
Read this document then pick a supported version of Windows for your Mac.
