Database Memory Advise..

Hello everyone,. I am currently working on Oracle 11g R2 on Red Hat Linux 5 System. My current RAM on the server is 48 Gb.
PGA has been assigned 10 Gb, SGA has been allocated with 30 Gb and rest 8 Gb is been used by Linux.
Is there any suggestion for increasing or decreasing either PGA or SGA Memory.
Thank You

Are you NOT using MEMORY_TARGET? If you are using memory_target, please be advised that it is allocation of both SGA and PGA.
To answer your question, there's no ROT for this. If there's one, Oracle would not have given so many memory related parameters. Only you can say if your database is starved of memory or it's not using most of the memory you have allocated. That's why Oracle has given memory advice views which you can monitor (along with AWR reports if you have licence) to see if your database needs more memory or is not really needing all memory).
From your description, I guess that you have SGA and PGA set (par with 10g and have ignored MEMORY_TARGET). Even in this situation, Oracle memory advicers are your best bet. You will have to check your AWR reports during peak DB hours to decide whether you have to increase or decrease memory or just do nothing.

  • SHARED MEMORY AND DATABASE MEMORY giving problem.

    Hello Friends,
I am facing problem with EXPORT MEMORY and IMPORT MEMORY.
I have developed one program which will EXPORT the internal table and some variables to the memory. This program will call another program via background job. IMPORT memory used in another program to get the first program data.
This IMPORT command is working perfect in foreground. But  it is not working in background.
So, I have reviewed couple of forums and I tried both SHARED MEMORY AND DATABASE MEMORY.  But no use. Still background is giving problem.
When I remove VIA JOB  parameter in the SUBMIT statement it is working. But i need to execute this program in background via background job. Please help me . what should I do?
pls find the below code of mine.
    option1
    EXPORT TAB = ITAB
           TO DATABASE indx(Z1)
                FROM   w_indx
                CLIENT sy-mandt
                ID     'XYZ'.
    option2
    EXPORT ITAB   FROM ITAB
      TO SHARED MEMORY indx(Z1)
      FROM w_indx
      CLIENT sy-mandt
      ID 'XYZ'.
       SUBMIT   ZPROG2   TO SAP-SPOOL
                      SPOOL PARAMETERS print_parameters
                       WITHOUT SPOOL DYNPRO
          *_VIA JOB name NUMBER number*_
                       AND RETURN.

Hope every bidy understood the problem.
my sincere request is ... pls post only relavent answer. do not post dummy answer for points.
    Thanks
    Raghu

    Hi.
You can not exchange data between your programs using ABAP memory, because this memory is shared between objects within the same internal session.
When you call your report using VIA JOB, a new session is created.
Instead of using EXPORT and IMPORT to memory, put both programs into the same Function Group, and use global data objects of the _TOP include to exchange data.
Another option, is to use SPA/GPA parameters (SET PARAMETER ID / GET PARAMETER ID), because SAP memory it is available between all open sessions. Of course, it depends on wich type of data you want to export.
    Hope it was helpful,
    Kind regards.

  • Database memory dump (please help!!!!!).

    Hello people,
I have a big problem with one of the database of my company, it seems that is a memory fail when try to allocate space or something, i search the Metalink looking for a solution but, I really don´t know what is the real problem of this memory dump, in the alert log that post down shows error in the TRC file, but there only shows the dump memory not the cause of this, we have big datafiles with a lot of data, I dont know if this is because the DBF files contain too much data or what..... the ORA-07445 seems that is a very generic error, and I dont have any tips to search the original error.
Can be this error because the server don´t have big resources?, the configuration of the server are:
    XEON 1 core 4 cpu´s
    4gb ram
    1TB hard disk
    Windows 2003 standard edition
    Oracle 10g 10.2.0.1 standard edition.
All in 32bits, ¿do you recommend migrating to 64bits for the 2gb memory limit of users in W2003?
¿The big datafiles and big tablespaces can be an issue for this memory dump? ¿Oracle 11g manages better big files that Oracle10g?
Please if your need any more info of configuration or something, please tellme.
    Thanks for all your answers.

I have tracked the SQL that hangs up the database but is a SQL that works always not only once, but there is something that when the database is with too many resources this crash the DB and not always is the same SQL. I have searched any tip or solution on the metalink but nothing is like this error.
I don´t know if anyone can help me with this... I have open an request via Metalink but i dont know if going to be any solution to this error.
    Thanks anyway.

  • Export/import to clone database -- please advise

    Hi All,
Need help especially from exports that are strong in export/import.
can someone advise me how to use export/import to clone a database?
I know how to clone database using cold backup and hot backup.
But wish to know the full steps in using export/import to do cloning.
I'm going to do a full export on my "TEST" database, drop the database, create a database and import using the full export.
After doing a full database export, full=y. What are the steps to follow. Have a few doubts about it.
    1) export the database (full=y)
    2) drop the database
    3) re-create the database, will be using the same name "TEST".
    4) create the users (IDs created by DBA, eg: schemas), tablespace and datafiles. --> import doesn't do it right?
    5) do a full import (full=y). In this step, will i encounter any problems? As in understand that all the oracle-owned objects (example SYSTEM, SYS, AUX) are already in the newly created database, will import full=y cause any problems?
    6) do i have to re-create the roles, SYNONYMS and grant role, sys, obj privileges to IDs not created by oracle. (example schema owner)
in short i would like to know what EXPORT will export and not export
what IMPORT will import and not import.
    Please advise.

    Hi zetabouy,
thanks for ur input, definately helpful for me.
just to confirm. am i right to say that only a full database level (full=y) export/import will export/import out roles as well as public synonyms? because i have tried also exporting a user from the database, and imported that user into a different database, but public synonyms and roles were not imported.
    one more question:
For example we are going to do port data from production to uat database using export and import for only the schema.
After exporting from production with such syntax (owner=OWNER01),
is is better to drop all objects beloging to the schema owner in UAT before importing it (touser=OWNER01, ignore=y) using the production dumpfile?
I'm asking this question as I'm afraid that if we did not drop all the pl/sql objects in UAT database, the updated procedures/fuctions/triggers exported from the production database will not get imported to the UAT database as UAT database have the same procedures/fuctions/triggers names (but not updated code) .
will profiles be exported and imported too duing full database level exp/imp?
    please kindly advise.
    thanks

  • Memory Advise for MSI 790FX-GD70

    Whoever may help,
Hi all, i'm trying to build a computer, i have all except the memories, im intent to go to 8GB DDR3 1333mhz but i dont know which brand/memory is compatible for this board.  if anyone could help me in this i would appreciated.
     Thank you.

but i dont know which brand/memory is compatible for this board.
That most depend of the CPU used, since memory controller is there.

  • Database structure advise

Just looking for a bit of advice as to how to best go set up my database structure.
I currently have the following tables:
    lodges
    LodgeID (PK)
    Lodge
    etc
    scores
    ScoreID (PK)
    Score
    CategoryID (FK)
    LodgeID (FK)
    etc
    categoriesFull
    CategoryID (PK)
    Category
    etc
    countries
    CountryID (PK)
    Country
So any lodge can have multiple scores, in multiple categories.
And I can currently produce a list of lodges for any given category, in a particular country which lists the lodge, the number of votes in the category, and the average score in the for that category, using:
SELECT ScoreID, COUNT(ScoreID) as scoreCount, AVG(Score) as AverageScore, lodges.LodgeID, Lodge, Country, lodges.CountryID, CategoryID FROM lodges INNER JOIN countries ON lodges.CountryID = countries.CountryID INNER JOIN scores ON lodges.LodgeID = scores.LodgeID WHERE lodges.CountryID = 37 AND CategoryID='14' GROUP BY Lodge
    So far, so good.
What I'm looking to do now is allow create two new fields, 'rank', and 'finalist'. So the plan is to use an update multiple record on those pages, with a tick box for 'finalist' and a text / integer field for 'rank'.
So someone can view all the lodges in a list and just tick the boxes for the ones they want to be a finalist, enter the rank of 1-10 for the top 10 ,and click update to update all the records.
However, I am not sure which table it would be best to put these in. They're kind of related to the scores, but really apply to the lodges, i.e. any given lodge will be deemed to be a finalist in a particular category, and may be ranked in any category.
At the moment I'm thinking I just need an extra table:
    finalists
    FinalistID (PK)
    Finalist (yes / no)
    Rank
    LodgeID (FK)
    CategoryID (FK)
Hope that makes sense - any advice on this would be appreciated before I start down the wrong path.
    Thank you!

I currently have the following tables:
    lodges
    LodgeID (PK)
    Lodge etc
    scores
    ScoreID (PK)
    Score
    CategoryID (FK)
    LodgeID (FK)
(also used to calculate ScoreCount and AverageScore)
    categoriesFull
    CategoryID (PK)
    Category
    countries
    CountryID (PK)
    Country
    nominations
    NominationID (PK)
    LodgeID (FK)
    CategoriesFullID (FK) (--to categoriesFull.CategoryID)
    SW_finalist
    SW_rank
So if I have the following:
    lodges
    LodgeID, Lodge
    798, Borana Lodge
    scores
    ScoreID, LodgeID, CategoryID, Score
    1001, 798, 7, 3 1002, 798, 7, 6 1003, 798, 7, 9
    categoriesFull
    CategoryID
    7
    countries
    CountryID
    3
    nominations
    NominationID, LodgeID, CategoryID, SW_finalist, SW_rank
    1234, 798, 7, Yes, 2
I'd like to be able to output
LodgeID, Lodge, CategoryID, CountryID, ScoreCount, AverageScore, NominationID, SW_finalist, SW_rank
    798, Borana Lodge, 7, 3, 3, 6, 1234, Yes, 2
This is what I had before introducing the nominations table:
SELECT ScoreID, COUNT(ScoreID) as scoreCount, AVG(Score) as AverageScore, lodges.LodgeID, Lodge, Country, lodges.CountryID, CategoryID, SW_finalist, SW_rank FROM lodges INNER JOIN countries ON lodges.CountryID = countries.CountryID INNER JOIN nominations ON lodges.LodgeID=nominations.LodgeID INNER JOIN scores ON lodges.LodgeID = scores.LodgeID WHERE lodges.CountryID = 3 AND CategoryID='7' GROUP BY Lodge
Which seemed to work to output:
LodgeID, Lodge, CategoryID, CountryID, ScoreCount, AverageScore 798, Borana Lodge, 7, 3, 3, 6
I just need to tag on those three fields from the nominations table. I presume the join on nominations needs to be also be on categoriesFull.CategoryID, but when I try something like
SELECT ScoreID, COUNT(ScoreID) as scoreCount, AVG(Score) as AverageScore, lodges.LodgeID, Lodge, Country, lodges.CountryID, CategoryID, SW_finalist, SW_rank FROM lodges INNER JOIN countries ON lodges.CountryID = countries.CountryID LEFT OUTER JOIN nominations ON lodges.LodgeID=nominations.LodgeID AND nominations.CategoriesFullID = categoriesFull.CategoryID INNER JOIN scores ON lodges.LodgeID = scores.LodgeID WHERE lodges.CountryID = 3 AND CategoryID='7' GROUP BY Lodge
I get an error about categoriesFull.CategoryID being an unknown column.
I think all the tables have the IDs they need, but any help with the right joins to get it to work would be much appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • Database Memory sizing for BI Beans

We need to make a RAM sizing for a production enviroment for 200 users, how can i do it?
    Thanks in advanced,
    HABO

This needs to be broken down into two areas and by hardware and software requirements:
    1) Database - the OLAP forum would be the best place to ask about specific requirements for the OLAP option. There is guidance on parameter settings for the OLAP option in the installation guide. In terms of hardware to support your proposed user community. In the documentation pack you might want to review the Data Warehouse and Performance Tuning guides.
    2) Middle-tier/iAS - Oracle has an internal only utility that can be used to predict hardware requirements for a middle-tier server. Your account manage should be able to help you with this. In terms of tuning, please refer to the Oracle Application Server Performance Guide.
    Hope this helps

For: PC SASS-7-10-B1, this may come out from anything, could be a batch code from a factory, I don't think they are standard codes.

  • SQL Result Cache  vs In-Memory Database Cache

    Hi,
can anyone help me to understand the relations and differences between the 11 g new features of SQL Result Cache vs In-Memory Database Cache ?
    Thanks

I highly recommend you read the 11g New Features Guide. Here is a sample from it:
    h4. 1.11.2.9 Query Result Cache
A separate shared memory pool is now used for storing and retrieving
cached results. Query retrieval from the query result cache is faster
than rerunning the query. Frequently executed queries will see
performance improvements when using the query result cache.
The new query result cache enables explicit caching of results in
database memory. Subsequent queries using the cached results will
    experience significant performance improvements.

    Pavan,
hi memory allocation should always depends on how many transactions hitting your database. it is not appropriate to set 1.5GB or less than that if your database is getting only 1-2 lakh tx's per day.
You have any reference doc to prove this point? On what basis one would assume his memory sizes when the transactions everyday are increasing in a database?
i remember 11g is having a wonderful parameter called MEMORY_TARGET. if possible please use that
I agree its a good parameter.Just an additional note for it It has a different algorithm to allocate the memory. You need to tweak your machine some times a bit to make this parameter work. The memory allocations of /dev/shm needs some time to be tweaked.

  • Oracle 11g Database Performance

We have Oracle 11g (11.1.0.6) database on HP-UX (IA). It’s around 200G database, and we have lot of batch job and reports running against this database. This database is performing really bad, whenever we restart the application and the database its performing good batch jobs are running for 2 hrs, the time will increase gradually and after few days same job taking more that 20 hrs some times its not even complete we manually kill it.
So I am guessing this is related to memory (SGA) issue, we have configured automatic memory management. But I don’t know where/what to look to find the root cause. Can some one help me to find a problem?

  • Oracle 9.2.0.8 on SUN M9000 Blade Server  Memory Limit

Is there a 32Gb memory limit for Oracle v9.2.0.8 residing on an SUN M9000 Blade Server?
We currently have an Oracle v9.2.0.8 installed on M9000 and whenever the database memory is increased, the database locks/ceases to function.
The (verbal) history which I have about this database is there is a 32Gb Memory Limit for Oracle v9.2.0.8 database installed on an M9000. Can anyone confirm/assist?

We currently have an Oracle v9.2.0.8 installed on M9000 and
whenever the database memory is increased, post COPY & PASTE show what is changed to which value
by default 32-bit SGA can not exceed about 1.7GB & never more than 4GB.
the database locks/ceases to function. What clues exist within alert_SID.log file?
    What specific errors get throw?

  • Reduce memory consumption when consolidating systems

We are in the process of consolidating all our DEV and QAS systems to one physical system (HP Super dome).
We are consolidate more then 20 SAP instances (Java and ABAP) to on physical system.
The question now is, how to setup the memory requirements (all instance are 64bit and Unicode), during the installation of those instances  we defined 4GB for a ABAP instances and 2 GB for a Java instance (Abap+Java 6GB).
In our situation we need around 90GB of main memory.
Does any one have a suggestion how to reduce this amount of memory.
Because this are all DEV and QAS systems and not all the systems are used at the same time. Is it possible to swapout allocated memory for instances which are not used.
    Kind Regards,
    Evert Schuiteman

    Hi Evert
Because this are all DEV and QAS systems and not all the systems are used at the same time. Is it possible to swapout allocated memory for instances which are not used.
This is possible theoretically, but even if no user is connected and no application job is running, there is still activity on a system, so the only way to free ressources is to stop a system when it is not needed. As memory is cheap, you should rather buy more, than running low on it. If the server starts paging, the sap systems will practically freeze.
You should not forget about the database memory, you will need at least another 2gb for every database.
In my opinion, you should not consider running 20 instances on one server (hard partition on superdomes). We still have several hard partitions on our superdomes running up to 4 sap instances / databases per partition. I strongly suggest to have a "rolling" consolidation, speaking you add systems one after another. This gives you the possibilty to react if any component becomes a bottleneck.

  • SQL 2005 fixed memory

    Hi ,
I have SAP 47X200 on SQL2005 64-bit installed on Windows enterprise edition X64.
I have installed database software using SQL4SAP.vbs as decrived in the installation guide : all OK , all work fine.
But , I want to use SQL 2005 with fixed memory as descrived in the article http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191144.aspx
but in the server page proprierties box Memory i don't have the flag box Dynamic memory configuration but only  Minimum server memory and Maximum server memory : if I set this two last value the same , the minimum server memory real is under this parameter.
So anyone know whi ? How to set fixed server memory ? Whi I don't have this flag?
    thks Antonio Voce
    Reward point for you.

    Hi ,
I set as you tell and now in database server proprierties  under memory box i have this value :
    Minimum server memory : 12000
    Maximum server memory : 12000
    Index creation memory : 12000
I have rebooted the server , starded SAP but in st04 I still see that the database memory is dynamically assigned :
