Database Trashed in PSE-5

I have a very large catalog in PSE-5 (200,000+ photos). Most of the catalog is intact, save for the oldest section, (about 40,000 photos) The intact poition is all contained in one large folder, (with only one layer of subfolders) on my "G" drive. The photos in question are also on this drive, but in different topical folders. The problem extends to the wrong file name, tags, and captions. This is totally bizarre, a photo of the Blue Angels might be named "Bai Ling 04". Is this possibly salvageable, or is it time for the big delete and reimport....?
I have used Windows Explorer to verify that the photos are still correctly named in Windows, and it seems that they are, but it's a tad difficult to cross reference this much information accurately.

Hope that you have taken a backup of all the catalog. You can do so File->Backup catalog. Also try repairing and optimizing the catalog. This might be helpful in solving the problem.

  • Database import from PSE -half success

    Hello,
I've just finished a mid-size database import from PSE to LR (32.000 mixed images).
    First observations:
    1. Unsuccessful migration of TAG hierarchy : some of the tags keep the hierarchy structure of PSE, most become flat. a given tag is divided sometimes in tow keywords (same keyword title!). a part is flat keyword, a part is child keyword
    2. complete disappearing of the PSE collections ! Oops
    3. Successful migration of the favorites(stars)
    4. Issues with dates (Creation date, capture date, etc.) - OOPS
Overall for me this is a failure !
Dommage as french are saying :(
LR can be very useful, but only if it understands other Adobe application wihtout faults !
overall comparison on performance : PSE is unsupportably slow at this size for basic file action (delete from catalog, file delete), LR performs better, meanwhile the on-the-fly preview generation is slower.

You never assign a value (True/False) to your function (ImportDBData). I would suggest googling "VBScript Function Syntax" to get a better understanding if you don't understand my answer.

  • PSE 10 Organizer vs. Lightroom 4 vs. iPhoto vs. Aperture vs. King Kong

Sorry about the King Kong deal. Got carried away.
    1. How does the new PSE 10 Organizer compare to Lightroom 4? I have had issues in the past with the PSE Organizer, so much so that I have always abandoned it. On the other hand, I have never been disappointed by the PSE Editor. It is by far my pixel editor of choice.
With that in mind, I plan to continue to use PSE10 as my primary editor. How well does it integrate into Lightroom?
    2. Versions/Stacks - (Still waiting for the download of the trial...) Do I understand correctly that PSE10 creates new files and stacks them automatically as version when editing? The way it makes it sound, every time I press Ctrl-s (Cmd-s), PSE saves the file as a version in a stack. I love this idea. Do I understand this correctly?
    3. Reference 2 above -- what does this mean when I use PSE as an external editor in Lightroom or iPhoto? (Do these programs that fire up PSE understand these version?)
    4. Those databases. Does PSE keep any edit info in databases? I'd rather have 10 versions of one image, than 1 version and the other 9 stored in a database of adjustments. (I've lost too many databases. Lose one file, lose a million edits/adjustments.)
    5. Cross-platform support. I know PSE comes in Mac/Win versions. But can I now have one set of data on a server and access it from both the PC and Mac?
    Thanks in advance,
    -Jack

      1. Lightroom integrates well with the PSE editor. In fact it will be automatically recognized as an external editor if you install Lightroom. It’s much more stable and powerful than organizer and you can search virtually any metadata field. The main benefits of LR4 derive from its CS6 raw engine although it will also process jpegs and other formats on a non destructive basis.
    2. Cmd+S normally overwrites the file. Use Save As if you want to add to a set.
    3. Lightroom let’s you make virtual copies so you only have one file on the hard drive, except when you do further editing in Elements, when Lightroom makes an export copy and a thumbnail in its library.
    4. Elements does not keep any edit information in it‘s database.
    5. You can keep image files on external storage, but the application needs to be on the main machine. Be aware that Windows and MacOSX will use different file paths so it will take some effort to keep things synchronized. Many people use a laptop when traveling but then import their work to a main catalog.

  • Newbie: Trashing an PSE9 icon on my desktop gives prob...

before I begin.. please be patient, I am very new to Mac.. (I sometimes wish I had just bought a new PC)
I installed Photoshop Elements9 onto my Mac, I have the original file on my desktop, and I have it on my dock.. however when I try to trash the PSE on my desktop, (to keep my desktop clean) I have a problem using the PSE9 software, as soon as I get it back out of the trash, it works fine..
Question: where do I put any software that I install.. I hope Im explaining it properly..

    Hi,
Not sure if this will work... but it's certainly worth a try...
Delete the Icon you have in the Dock...
Put your PSE9 into your Applications Folder...
Then Drag the PSE9 Icon to the Dock from the Folder you have in Applications....
    See if that works...
    Does that make Sense...?

  • My iCal just totally went on the fritz.  Please help me restore it.

After years of use, all of a sudden my iCal went on the fritz today. Tools would appear and disappear and could not be selected (eg. Month, Week, Day); the to-do list disappeared; calendars in the list of calendars at the top left would appear and disappear and could not be selected; I could not add a new event. The monthly calendar at the bottom left would appear and disappear but fortunately I would allow me to move to a different week so that I could view the events in my calendar, but not move, change, delete, or add events. I could not export.
Apparently the problem is in my user files. I created a new computer account, logged into that account, and iCal worked fine there.
    I am using iCal 3.0.8 and OS X 10.5.8.
I tried trashing Home/Library/Caches, and also all the caches in Home/Library/Calendars/ , and also Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.ical (all of them). Upon restart, the problems are still there.
I do not have a backup of iCal files per se. I do have a Time Machine backup of my computer files. I tried bringing back a previous version of all the files in Home/Library/Calendars, but that did not work.
I guess I need somehow to clean up the base iCal file. Frankly, I don't know where that is. I thought that the Home/Library/Calendars/ folder was the place that iCal used, since it has a folder for each calendar with an info.plist file on the particular calendar's name, color, etc., and then an enclosed folder with a file for each event and to-do item for that particular calendar. However, it appears that this is not true and there must be some other master file location, which just populates the Home/Library/Calendars folder for convenience. For example, when I created a new account on my computer and ran iCal, if I created calendars and events in the program, and then quit the program and deleted a calendar from the Home/Library/Calendars folder or deleted a particular event from the Events folder inside the Home/Library/Calendars calendar folder, I found that when I restarted iCal, it still had the calendar and event, and recreated them inside the Home/Library/Calendars folder. Similarly, if I added to the Home/Library/Calendars folder on the new computer account one of the folders for a calendar and events I have from my existing account, they do not appear when running iCal. Thus, there must be some other place where the data for the iCal program resides.
I would desperately like to get the program working again, with all my data intact. Is there some way that I can "clean" the base file, and bring in the data again. If not, what files do I need to bring back from TimeMachine to restore iCal to its condition from an earlier time when it was working? I know that it is not enough to just bring in the files from Home/Library/Calendars.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Dear John,
Thank you again for your thoughts and help.
I tried restoring from the backup created earlier, but that did not work. Apparently, the backup is also corrupted. When I did a restore, iCal just hung. It appears that the data was imported, but then something prevented it from finishing. When I restarted iCal, I now had double entries for each event, and the same problems with the program not working.
However, after many troubleshooting attempts, I have finally got the program working and restored data from TimeMachine from a week ago. Here is what I learned. (Please give me the benefit of your thoughts on all of this):
There apparently is some file (probably associated with iSync) that stores all of the data in iCal. It may be the case that there is one file which stores the calendars, and a separate one which stores the events for those calendars. The data is also found in the Home/Library/Calendars folder. It appears that on system startup (without even starting iCal), if the system does not detect the Calendars folder, it creates a new one, and populates it with default "Home" and "Work" calendars with no items in them. However, the system then goes on to check the background database (iSync?) and if there is calendar data there, it adds those calendars and the events in those calendars to the Calendars folder. (Therefore, the data in the database is in some location other than the Calendars folder, because even when everything is deleted from the Calendars folder, trashed and emptied, the system recreates all of the data, repopulates the Calendars folder with the data, and it appears in iCal.) Thus, it appears that if there is no Calendars folder initially, the system does two things on startup (or other sync event): (1) create "Home" and "Work" calendars, and (2) import all other calendars and their associated events from the sync database into the Calendars folder and make it available to iCal.
If changes are made in iCal to add events, etc., but the info in the Calendars folder is deleted before a system restart (or other sync event), on a restart with a blank Calendars folder, the new Calendars folder is repopulated with the calendars and events from the database, but does not include the new events. On the other hand, if changes are made in iCal to add events, etc., and the Calendars folder is then left alone through a restart, it appears that on the shut down there is another syncing that takes place--this time the new data added by iCal to the Calendars folder is now added to the database. Thus, after the restart, if you delete the Calendars folder, and restart again, the system recreates the Calendars folder, and the added events are now there.
If I create a new user account, and replace the Calendars folder with a copy of the Calendars folder from my existing account, and then restart, the system again compares the Calendars folder with the database (blank). Since the database started with no information, it creates a "Home" and "Work" calendar in the Calendars folder. However, it also adds the calendars and entries that are in the Calendars folder to the database. I know it is now there because if I delete, trash, and empty the Calendars folder, and restart the computer, the Calendars folder is now repopulated with all of the data from the database.
So, as best I can tell, on system startup (or other sync event?), the system compares the database and the Calendars folder. If there is nothing in the Calendars folder, the system creates "Home" and "Work" calendars. If there are other calendars in the database, and they are not in the Calendars folder, the system creates the calendars and their events in the Calendars folder from the database and they are now available to iCal. When using iCal, changes that are made, such as adding or deleting events or calendars, are reflected by immediate changes to the files and folders in the Calendars folder. However, it appears that the database is not changed immediately, at least with regard to added or deleted events. (I am not sure whether adding or deleting a calendar affects the database immediately or not.) On system shutdown (or other sync event), the system again compares the database and the Calendars folder, and updates the database with the changes made to the Calendars folder.
What I think happened in my case is that somehow the database lost the identity of my calendars. It had the events (in their proper colors), but did not have the calendars themselves. This caused iCal to freak out. When I removed the Calendars folder and started over, the system created "Home" and "Work" calendars (and "Birthdays" subscription calendar), and then brought back in all the old events again from the database. On running iCal, there were "Home", "Work" and "Birthdays" calendars in the calendar list, but none of the names of the other calendars. However, all the events were still there. This again caused iCal to freak out.
When I tried restoring the iCal backup file, apparently the same corruption problem existed in the backup file. So it added all the events in again without a calendar reference (although in the correct colors), but never cleaned up -- since the restore never finished--it just hung. The result was that iCal now had two copies of each event, but still was not working because all of those events were somehow not properly associated to a calendar.
I then tried deleting the Calendars folder and resetting iSync. That worked wonders. Resetting iSync apparently cleaned out all of the events from the database. However, it did not clean out the seven calendars I had before. Rather, it now made them able to be recognized by iCal. When I then ran iCal, all of the calendars I had before showed up in iCal, but there were no events in them. (That is why I think there is one database file which identifies the calendars that the user is currently using, and a separate database file which stores the events. Resetting iSync cleans out the events database, but does not change the list of calendars that the user is currently using.)
Having apparently cleared the database of its problems, I then tried restoring with the backup file again. Unfortunately, that did not work. It really appears that the backup file is corrupted. The restore only brought back the same problem-- the events were brought back without any associated calendars, and iCal did not work.
So, I reset iSync again to clean out the database, trashed the Calendars folder, used TimeMachine to bring back a former copy of my Calendars folder, and restarted. I ran iCal and it recognizes all of the calendars and the events that were in them. I restarted again. (That apparently updated the database.) I deleted the Calendars folder. I restarted again. The system now recreated the Calendars folder from the database--adding a "Home" and "Work" calendar.
So, I think there is a two-way synchronization between the database and the Calendars folder.
Ultimately, the resolution to my problem would be:
    (1) reset iSync to clear the database
    (2) delete the Calendars folder
    (3) restore a previous version of the Calendars folder from TimeMachine
    (4) restart
    (5) iCal runs fine, using the data brought back from TimeMachine
    (6) restart again to sync the data to the database.

    ANy tipps?
I reinstalled until now two times without any success

    Hi Jim,
I will check if I have another version in place. Maybe now I get a problem because I use Bridge for viewing the new pictures, classifying by tags. For searches later on I have Photoshop elements because of it´s fast database. For PSE I now need Version 7 with Camera Raw 5.2, for Bridge and CS3 (more complex actions for improving my pictures) I had to install ACR 4.6.
From Bridge I can open the pictures with "open" and 4.6 appears before entering CS3. But in Bridge the option "open with camera raw" is not available.
Hopefully I only have 2 ACR 4.x versions in the CS3 directories. This would be easy to solve. Otherwise it seems to get more and more enerving to find the error.

  • Events, people, places , albums, tags

Can someone help me understand what happens on a file level with these tools
i understand that "tags" write a text to the actual file in windows.
how do the other elements work?

i understand that "tags" write a text to the actual file in windows.
This is not correct. Nothing is written to your photo files when you assign a tag (or any other item you mentioned).
All of the items you describe exist inside the PSE Organizer (which is a database). The information is contained inside this database. This enables you to record information about each photo, and then later to search for a photo, so if you have given a photo the tag "kids" and also the tag "beach", then later you can do a search for photos that have both tags to find this photo.
As a result of the database nature of PSE, you need to do all of your photo management inside of PSE (and not in Windows), because PSE contains information about where the file is located, and the name of the file. It does not contain the file. Thus, if you move the file, or rename it, PSE no longer can find it. (If you move or rename the file in PSE, then PSE will be able to find it).
You can, OPTIONALLY, write some of the metadata to the photo files if you so desire. Album information will never be written to the photo file. Select the desired files and then use File->Write Tags. Even if you do this, PSE uses its database for searching purposes, not the information written to the files.

  • Can't save Photoshop edits...

If I open an iPhoto photo in an external editor, Photoshop CS3, I am unable to save the edited file back into iPhoto. I see a grayed-out iPhoto library instead--the photo appears in my Pictures folder but not in iPhoto. This happens with both RAW and JPEG original files and no matter whether I save as TIFF, JPEG, or PSD.
I'm using the latest updates of iPhoto, Photoshop, and OS X. I have rebuilt the database, trashed the prefs, and tried DiskWarrior, but no joy. Any ideas? Thanks.
    C.

If you send a file to PS from iPhoto and make modifications to the file and then save it, it will be saved back to iPhoto.
But if you make a new file, then iPhoto will not know about this new file. It has to be imported.
As No one can save changes to a RAW file, a new file must be created. This new file has to be imported.
So, you sent a RAW file to PS and are producing a jpeg out at the end. The jpeg is a new file and it will have to be imported.
So, to be clear, send a jpeg to PS, save it back to iPhoto, no problem. Similarly with TIFF's or any other supported file. But not with RAW. Why? Because if you edit a RAW file you cannot save it as a RAW file but in some other format. Once it's in another format, it's a new file. This is a characteristic of RAW files.

  • Missing Palettes in Elements 6 (MAC)

    Hi,
Similar to a previous user (Erithacus May 11 2009) I cannot access the effects or layers palettes. Unlike him I have a full (paid) version. I have tried your advice to delete mediaDatabase.db3 but this has not corrected the problem.
In the book - The Missing Manual - it recommends uninstalling the original version of Elements 6. This I have also tried to do. I downloaded a clean copy of the program to an external hard drive but when I try to uninstall the original version on my Mac it claims to have effected a repair but hasn't!
I can't seem to solve this!
    Help please!
    Thanks

Hello Barbara,Thank you, thank you, thank you!

You gave me the confidence to do it and I really appreciate your help.

It shouldn't be any different than dragging a normal mac program to the
trash. PSE strews stuff all over your hard drive so it needs the uninstall
to scurry around and sweep up all the bits and bobs for you.

  • Upgrade from element 8 PC to element 12 mac and got an error that mac version doesn't support older element version. Any idea how to move catalog an pics?

    Hello,
Just upgraded Elements to version 12 on a Mac. Did a full backup on my Window based version 8 to external drive and when I wanted to do a restore on the V12 (Mac) got the following message: This catalog is from an older version of Elements and currently is not supported on the Mac platform. Please create a new catalog and then import your media". Any idea how I can maintain all the catalog data from the PC (I have about 25K pictures)?
    Thanks

There was a major change in catalog database format in PSE 9. You would need to install PSE 9 or later in windows, make the backup again and then restore that to the mac. You could conceivably do this with the trial if you didn't buy the boxed version of PSE 12 and so don't have the windows media.

    Hi brunohailey,
If you think this solution can work any better for you, please do the following-
    1. Uninstall PSE (ensure you have the product set up files and serial key aside)
    2. Go to ~/library/Preferences and delete the following files-
         com.adobe.PhotoshopElements.plist
         com.adobe.PhotoshopElements.plist.lockfile
         Adobe Photoshop Elements x paths
         Adobe Photoshop Elements x settings
    3. Go to ~/library/Saved App States and trash all PSE related files

  • PSE 13 crashes whenever I try to save a file.  It worked last week and no longer works.  I tried trashing the preference file.  That didn't fix the problem.

I installed PSE 13 three weeks ago.  It worked well for a while, then started to crash whenever I tried to save a file for the web.  I trashed the preferences.  That didn't seem to help.  PSE 11 still works well on my Mac, so I think it's a software problem.  I also ran the permissions repair on Disk Utility. I have Yosemite on a MacBook Pro with 4 GB of RAM.

I've not used Keynote 5.3 in OS 10.7.5 in quite some time, but I do know that in more current OS versions there is a Saved Application State folder in the Username/Library folder which can get corrupted/ messed up when an application crashes. The User Library folder, as I recall, is hidden in the Finder, but accessible by pressing and holding the Option key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder.
"com.apple.Keynote.savedState" is the folder, or perhaps file, you want to find and delete- making sure Keynote is not open at that time, which if it can't start without crashing will not be a problem.
This is a "trick" I've used with other applications that got stuck in a loop of trying to restore a pre-crash state, and obviously couldn't start as that state led to the crash. I do not see that savedState file for Keynote on my 10.9 computer, but that is where I would look.
    Good luck!

  • Pse crashing after database update.

hi there. some help would be amazing. i am kind of in panic mode to be honest.
my program is pse8 running on a PC with windows 7 (64 bit operating system)
i was having a hard time installing my photo actions, so i purchased graffi's add-o-matic.
i hated it because it would just insert a generic image where the thumbnails would be, so i never knew what action i was using until i hovered over it.
so, i googled, found out how to add photo actions manually. then i went in and deleted all of the ones add-o-matic had done before, got rid of the thumbnails and re-installed all my actions manually.
some of them looked great. the correct thumbnails were there, etc. more than half, however, did not look right. they were still showing add-o-matic's generic thumbnail or no thumbnail at all- just a black box where the action button would be.
i emailed the creator of the add-o-matic and he directed me to a workshop on his site about how to rebuild your database.
    i did this:
Sometimes, though, something has blocked the database from finishing its update (you started working too soon while the database is still rebuilding in the background is the most common reason).  Sometimes you simply have to manually force a rebuild of the database.  It's fairly simple to do, but it does take a good 15 or 20 minutes to complete. Here's how to do that in Photoshop Elements:
(By the way, the file paths below are for Windows 7 & Vista - if you're using XP, substitute C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data  for everywhere you see C:\Program Data\ )
Turn on hidden folders' visibility first by clicking Start>Control Panel>Folder Options, and choose the View tab. Scroll down to the section concerning viewing hidden files and folders, and toggle it ON. Click OK enough times to exit that dialog.
    Then navigate to C:\Program Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\#.#
and locate the file "ThumbDatabase.db3"  - rename it "ThumbDatabase.db3.OLD".
    Next, navigate to
    C:\Program Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\#.#\Locale\en_US
and rename the database file there, too, from "MediaDatabase.db3" to "MediaDatabase.db3.OLD"
*Quit all other programs (email, web browser, etc.) and restart Elements.
Your entire database will be rebuilt, and this will take a bit of time (around 15 ~ 20 minutes or so, maybe a bit more or less depending on your computer's speed, how many other utilities are running, how much stuff you've added to Elements, etc.)
When it finishes, restart Elements again, and all your menus should appear populated.
then when i went to open pse again, it just keeps crashing over and over and over.
i have uninstalled and reinstalled. cleaned it up with a registry cleaner, etc and i cannot get pse to stop crashing.
can someone please help me. this is so horrible!
    thank you!

Go to http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/faqs.html and start with Multiple applications quit unexpectedly or fail to launch. Also, read Installing software updates before doing any more updates. I normally would say boot into your bootable backup, erase the volume you updated, and reinstall, but I don't get the inkling that you have one.
