Dataguard connection
Hi all,
i configured dataguard in high protection mode. Now all the users are connecting to primary database.
Primary netservice name is prim and standby netservice name is stand,
Now if we switch over this primary database to standby and standby to primary to which database users are going to connect. how they connect to current primary database (previously it was standby).
How application will connect to the primary database (previously it was standby). all the applications will be using prim netservice name right...? what would be stuff from dba's end.
Please let me know.
Thank you!

Answer:- Update TNS entries.
There is another option with observer, in case if you configure FSFO if primary goes down according to the service configured it will connects to standby in case of falivoer. Client connections will be automatically connected to standby. Its an option of observer(fsfo/broker)
further if any queries related to Dataguard, please post in Oracle Discussion Forums » High Availability » Data Guard its an dedicated forum for High Availability/Data Guard.
Thanks.

Oracle 10g dataguard Connect-time failover Parameter 15 minutes
Hello,
we running a system with DataGuard in Maximum Availability protection mode and one physical Standby Database. There are two connections between primary and standby. I configured listener and tnsnames to perform a Connect-time failover in case one connection is down. In first place it seemed to work fine but since it has happened that the primary always hangs for exactly 15 minutes until the failover is performed. (ALL redologs need archiving)
I think this must be the default value of a Parameter but reading docs for hours I can't find it.
Can anybody help me?
Best regards
FritzIt's like this. The connection failover I'm talking about is only between the primary database and standby database. I have two connections between them. That makes two addresses for the service (servicetostandby) specified in the log_archive_dest used by dataguard. In my case the log_archive_dest Paramater looks like this:
log_archive_dest_3 = 'SERVICE servicetostandby OPTIONAL LGWR SY
NC AFFIRM VALID_FOR=(ONLINE_LO
GFILES,PRIMARY_ROLE) DB_UNIQUE
NAME=standby REOPEN=10 NETTIME
OUT=9'
The tnsnames.ora entry looks like this:
servicetostandby =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = address1)(PORT = 1521))
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = address2)(PORT = 1521))
(FAILOVER=true)
(LOAD_BALANCE=false)
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVER = DEDICATED)
(SERVICE_NAME = standby)
So if either address1 or address2 is down dataguard should use the other address to connect to the standby database.
Maybe because of the Maximum Availability protection mode the primary database does not perform if the standby database is not available. I'm not sure about that. But fact is that if I power off the standby database, the primary database hangs only for 9 seconds. That's specified in the net_time_out attribut of the log_archive_dest Parameter. So I'm quite sure that something in the oracle net service causes the problem.
With the "primary hangs" I mean: After the used connection (say address1) went down the redologfiles of the primary database get filled and then it stops for 15 minutes. The messages in the alert.log:
Thread 1 cannot allocate new log, sequence 1304
All online logs needed archiving
After 15 minutes the connection via address2 is established and everything works fine.
I hope I made myself clear this time and didn't confuse you totally.

Having dataguard connect to the open database.
Does any have docs on setting up teh listener and tnsnames so when a switch over occurs teh client is bounced to the correct server? This information is very elusive.. here is what I have
10GR2 on RH linux 4.3
I have dgmgrl able to switch back and forth easily. I have PROD and PROD_s
My question is - what is the correct client tnsnames entry and server listeners? If I have switched
PROD over to Linux2- using the stanza below, my client connection will connect
to PROD_s in mounted state.
PROD=
(DESCRIPTION=
(ADDRESS_LIST=
(LOAD_BALANCE=off)
(FAILOVER=ON)
(ADDRESS=(PROTO =tcp)(HOST=Linux1)(PORT=1521))
(ADDRESS=(PROTO =tcp)(HOST=Linux2)(PORT=1521)))
(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=PROD)))
I need to know- how the client request can detect the db is in mounted state,
and then failover to the alternate server with the active database is.
Essentially I need the correct failover client tns stanza. Having two separate
net service names will not work in an environment with hundreds of users. I
have checked all the documentation and the net service configuration is sketchy
at best.
I appreciate your help in getting the right configuration.
A few more details – on both servers my PMON process is broadcasting PROD. I
have the db_unique_name being prod on one -- and prod_s for the standby
thanks
BobPROD over to Linux2- using the stanza below, my

I need to know- how the client request can detect the
db is in mounted state,
and then failover to the alternate server with the
active database is.he can't. TAF doesn't apply in this case because the client gets a connect but no login.
fortunately there's a solution, see below.
Essentially I need the correct failover client tns
stanza. Having two separate
net service names will not work in an environment
with hundreds of users. Iuse service_names. create a service for your application and start the service only on the primary.
a switchover sequence is then as follows:
1. stop service_name on all nodes
2. switchover
3. start service on primary
if you want it nice and pretty you can create a database startup trigger which checks v$database.database_role and issues 'alter system set service_name ...' only if database_role is primary. a database shutdown trigger could be used to stop the service but it's not absolutely necessary.
it's easy to implement and works very well.
A few more details – on both servers my PMON process
is broadcasting PROD. I
have the db_unique_name being prod on one -- and
prod_s for the standbythat's ok, primary and standby have the same dbname, only db_unique_name differs.

How to configure oracle dataguard for connecting to the second nic.
hi
i want deploy my oracle dataguard on a remote site on a separate lease line
and on the second nic of the primary. i just have a concern that what
configurations should be made in the primary or standby to make sure the replication can work as the first nic is connected to receive the general database
data and the second nic is being planned for replication only.
so how standby will come to know that it has to pick which one of then.
waiting for an early reply
manish lall
[email protected]thanks for the reply
does that mean nothing is to be needed to configure for oracle standby as such.
can you give me some idea of how this ip routing configuration will be done -

What kind of net connection should I have for a DataGuard system?
I want to construct a DataGuard system on 3 PCs( all with the RHEL5.0 OS and just for test purpose). But I don't know what kind of connection should I make between the 3 PCs? Shoud I use a router?
Thank you for any answer. You don't really need a router for this testing.
a simple back to back connection would work.
or a hub even.
routers tend to get more expensive.

Hi everybody!
I have a problem. Some weeks ago I opened a post related to this issue. We have two dataguards with dataguard broker. One of them is resync (thanks to mseberg and this forum) and now I have problems with the other.
Once I have learned how to configure and start/stop dataguard broker, I have a more basic problem, which is to resync it. I follow a process, where I backup the primary with RMAN, I copy the rman files to the other server with the controlfile, at once, I recover with rman again.
The problem is that it is too big, 2 hours for backing it up more or less, and when I restore it, no archivelog list appears being syncronized.
I have followed the same process than the other one and I can't resync it. I think there is something at my params or something new at 11g version...

srvctl stop database -d east -f
srvctl start database -d east -o open
srvctl config database -d east
srvctl status database -d east
○ 参考出力
set linesize 500 pages 0

5 Dataguard questions on implementation and maintainence
I have created Oracle10g Dataguard Physical standby. Everything seems to working properly. I switch a log@primary and i see it applied at standby. In OEM the Primary instance is shown as "Primary" and Dataguard Normal.
Questions
=======
1.I used cold backup to create physical standby where i copied just the datafiles. I DID NOT copy the online logfiles from primary DB . Is this ok?
Reason i am asking is, I am seeing this in alertlog (Please see in Bold below). Could this message in alert be ignored?
Fri Mar 14 16:11:55 2008
Redo Shipping Client Connected as PUBLIC

2. Physical standby was created in default mode " MAX PERFORMANCE" but i followed the manual and i realize i created standby redo logs at primary DB.
Is it true we do not need standby redo logs for MAX PERFORMANCE mode?
3. What is the quickest way to create a physical standby taking into consideration the downtime of the primary database.
4. Can we setup Dataguard for a live running production database (assuming prod is all set with prepare steps as laid out in manual) without downtime.
5. I hear dataguard management involves lot of shell scripting for log shipping, failover, switchover etc. Looking at 10g manual all these appear to be handled automatically if configured. Is it true that all the Dataguard functionality is auto and does not need shell scripting?
These are the things came up to mind. Please list any others you can think of for a Dataguard implementation. Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks and have a great time.
S~My question is , I havent created either online logfiles or standby log files on the secondary database, then how is RFS process applying the logs to the standby database?
If you do not create standby log files on the secondary database, then RFS process will apply logs from primary DB's archieved redo logs, refer 5.1 Introduction to Redo Transport Services.(http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/log_transport.htm)
Also i see entries in v$log@standby, since i haven't created log files@standby where is this info getting from?
It will be through the entry in Stndby DB parameter file "LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT=
'/arch1/chicago/','/arch1/boston/','/arch2/chicago/','/arch2/boston/'

I'm following this( http://wiki.oracle.com/page/11gR2+Data+Guard+Setup+project+Part5 ) article to configure a active dataguard. And i have successfully completed lot of steps up to now.
But im getting an error when i'm trying to complete the step 10 under chapter 5 (creating stand by)
step 10

At the command prompt type in rman
when rman launches connect to the target and auxiliary databases

connect auxiliary sys/michael@MS112DGS
here is my one... my primary db is called as dgp and my stand by is dgs
this is the error im getting... :(

Hi all,
I have prepared a logical dataguard on two local systems. My oracle version is 9i and linux version is Entreprise Linux 3.0.
Today when i tried to execute spcreate.sql on the primary database it had thrown some errors in my secondary database.
Kindly look at the following output from my secondary database:-
SQL> select applied_scn,newest_scn from dba_logstdby_progress;
APPLIED_SCN NEWEST_SCN
270084 272644
SQL> SELECT XIDUSN, XIDSLT, XIDSQN FROM DBA_LOGSTDBY_EVENTS
2 WHERE EVENT_TIME = (SELECT MAX(EVENT_TIME) FROM DBA_LOGSTDBY_EVENTS);
XIDUSN XIDSLT XIDSQN

SQL> EXECUTE DBMS_LOGSTDBY.SKIP_TRANSACTION(6,1,114);
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.

EVENT
STATUS_CODE
STATUS
grant select on STATS$V_$SQLXS to PERFSTAT
942
ORA-00942: table or view does not exist
from the above errors i have found out that a particular transaction is unable to replicate in my standby database and i skipped the transaction. But still after skipping the transaction applied_scn in the dba_logstdby_progress is moving only by 3 each time I skip a transaction . So it won'' t be possible for me to skip each and every transaction.
Kindly let me another way of skipping the rest of transactions which are causing halt in the replication.
Also I am unable to find out how the script executed from the sys user can be replicated on logical database as sys comes in unsupported users in logical datagurad.
Is there any way I can execute a script on primary database which won't reflect on secondary database.
thanks in advance.Hi Yoann,
Commands you provided for skipping perfstat schema worked on logical database .
Now i m executing spcreate.sql on secondary database it gives following errors after i have specified the perfstat password, default tablespace for perfstat as 'perfstat' and temporary tablespace for perfstat as 'temp' and datafile contained in perfstat tablespace is 150 MB in size.
spcreate worked fine on primary but is giving errors in the end in secondary.Any suggestions about this:-

Hello All,
I have the below question concerning Oracle 11gR2 with Dataguard.
I have one primary database and one Logical standby database.
I have a question about the below scenario:
In case the primary database failed I will apply the below steps:
1. Failover to the logical standby database. Now it is reacting as a primary database.
2. I restored and recovered the failed primary database and I want to build it as a Logical standby database.
My question is, in that specific step when I restored and recovered my failed primary database, the restore and recovery process may take me two days for example, and the primary database is restored to a certain SCN, but the clients are connected to another database (the new primary) and they are modifying the data on the new primary database while i am recover my failed primary database, so when i convert my failed primary database to a Logical stand by database.
SQL Apply will automatically know from which SCN should start applying redo logs ?
These logs are applied from both archive logs of the new primary database and from the standby redo logs? since some redo logs may have been archived before overwriting.
And same question when i first create any logical standby database, i will create it from a backup copy of the primary database, so based on what the SQL apply will start applying the redo logs ?
how it can indicate that it should start applying redo logs from a certain point (or SCN)?
One more question:
During switch over: both primary and standby databases will be started up in restricted mode?
Hope my questions are clear.
Regards.

Hello. I set up a new dataguard and am receiving errors when I try to start it on my primary. I looked at support note 172779.1 and it says the DB_UNIQUE_NAME needs to match from the log_archive_dest_2 to the db_unique_name of the standby. I think it looks okay but I'm missing something.
