Dataguard lost both Primary redo log and standby redo log files

Hi,
I am new to data guard, i came acorss a scenario where we loose both primary redo log file and standby redo log files.
Can someone please help me understand how to recover from this situation.
Thanks!

>loose both primary redo log file and standby redo log files
We have to be very clear.
There are (set A) online redo log files  and (set B) standby redo log files at (location 1) Primary and (location 2) Standby.
The standby redo log files, depending on the configuration, aren't strictly mandatory.  The standby can be applying redo without online redo log files present as well, depending on how it was setup.
So, the question is  : Did you lose online redo log files at the primary ?  Didn't the primary shutdown itself then ? If so, you have to do an incomplete recovery at the primary OR switch over to the standby (which may or may not have received the last transaction, depending on how it was configured and operating)   OR restore from the standby (again, with possible loss of transactions) to the primary.

  • The file structure online redo log, archived redo log and standby redo log

I have read some Oracle documentation for file structure and settings in Data Guard environment. But I still have some doubts. What is the best file structure or settings in Oracle 10.2.0.4 on UNIX for a data guard environment with 4 primary databases and 4 physical standby databases. Based on Oracle documents, there are 3 redo logs. They are: online redo logs, archived redo logs and standby redo logs. The basic settings are:
    1. Online redo logs --- This redo log must be on Primary database and logical standby database. But it is not necessary to be on physical standby database because physical standby is not open. It doesn't generate redo log. However, if don't set up online redo log on physical standby, when primary failover and switch standby as primary. How can standby perform without online redo logs? In my standby databases, online redo logs have been set up.
    2. Archived redo logs --- It is obviously that primary database, logical and physical standby database all need to have this log file being set up. Primary use it to archive log files and ship to standby. Standby use it to receive data from archived log and apply to database.
    3. Standby redo logs --- In the document, it says A standby redo log is similar to an online redo log, except that a standby redo log is used to store redo data received from another database. A standby redo log is required if you want to implement: The maximum protection and maximum availability levels of data protection and Real-time apply as well as Cascaded destinations. So it seems that this standby redo log only should be set up on standby database, not on primary database. Am my understanding correct? Because I review current redo log settings on my environment, I have found that Standby redo log directory and files have been set up on both primary and standby databases. I would like to get more information and education from experts. What is the best setting or structure on primary and standby database?

    FZheng:
Thanks for your input. It is clear that we need 3 type of redo logs on both databases. You answer my question.
But I have another one. In oracle ducument, it says If you have configured a standby redo log on one or more standby databases in the configuration, ensure the size of the current standby redo log file on each standby database exactly matches the size of the current online redo log file on the primary database. It says: At log switch time, if there are no available standby redo log files that match the size of the new current online redo log file on the primary database. The primary database will shut down
My current one data gurard envirnment setting is: On primary DB, online redo log group size is 512M and standby redo log group size is 500M. On the standby DB, online redo log group size is 500M and standby redo log group size is 750M.
This was setup by someone I don't know. Is this setting OK? or I should change Standby Redo Log on standby DB to 512M to exactly meatch with redo log size on primary?

  • Online redo logs vs standby redo logs

    Hi All,
    Oracle version : 10.2.0.4
    OS : SunOS 5.10 Generic_118855-36 i86pc i386 i86pc
This might be a silly question for the experts :(
We are having 2 standby databases and 1 logical database. Everything is running fine , I have one confusion : My primary server having 3 online redo log files and 3 standby redo log files (on primary local), but as per the architecture standby redo logs should be on standby server. My question is whether standby redo logs on standby are online redo logs of standby server or standby redo logs of primary server. e.g If i perform a log switch on primary then what is the role of sync and affirm, will lgwr write parallel on online redo logs ,standby redo logs (of primary) or online redo logs (of primary) and online redo logs (which is known as standby redo logs on standby ). Please help me to understand the scenerio.
    Thanks in advance!

RFS receives redo information from the primary database.
RFS can write the redo into standby redo logs or directly to archived redo logs. Each LNSn and ARCn process from the primary database has its own RFS process.
A standby redo log is used only when the database is in the standby role to store redo data received from the primary database. Standby redo logs form a separate pool of log file groups.
Configuring standby redo log files is highly recommended on all standby databases in a Data Guard configuration, including the primary database to aid in role reversal.
A standby redo log is required to implement:
    • The maximum protection and maximum availability levels of data protection
    • Real-time apply
    • Cascaded redo log destinations
Standby redo logs are recommended for maximum performance data protection mode. Unless you are using the real-time apply feature, standby redo logs must be archived before the data can be applied to the standby database. The standby archival operation occurs automatically.

  • Log and capture or Log and transfer?

I'm a newbie to FCP, I've been working at it and researching, so I have a basic understanding, been able to do some good stuff, now I'm looking to find more time-economical ways to do things.  I'm a football coach, looking to cut up game films into individual plays (1 play per clip), and ideally being able to name each clip by it's play name "Trap" or "Pop Pass" for example.  It looks like I need to get into logging if possible.  My workflow at present when dealing with an opponent's film is to take a DVD, and get it onto my computer using MPEG Streamclip.  I've been using DVC-PAL as a codec at someone's suggestion, I can't rmemeber where I got that.  Is this a mistake?  Anyhow, I now import that movie file into FCP using File>Import.  At this point I can't do any logging though, if I try Log and Capture or Log and Transfer I get "Unable to initialize video deck", though it tells me I can still use Capture Now.  Once it opens the Log and Capture window, I get "Error: this operation requires a controllable deck."  and directs me to the Audio/Video Settings.  Here's where I'm pretty much lost.  Do I try to adjust settings from here?  If so, to what?  Do I need to start by changing my MPEG Streamclip settings and then trying to match those up in my FCP Audio/Video Settings?  Or do I need to completely overhaul the way I'm approaching this?  ARGH!  I've been impressed with myself getting to this point, any help from here would be greatly appreciated, thanks all!

Log and Capture is used if you are capturing footage from tape based formats.  DV, HDV, HDCAM...others.
Log and Transfer is for tapeless camera systems.  P2, XDCAM, Canon DSLR, AVCHD.
If your footage comes from DVDs...and you convert the footage to QT files...then you simply go to FILE>IMPORT.  You don't log with this method.  Just import and work with the footage.

  • Can you use an external hard drive (G-Tech 1 TB) as both a time machine and for storing extra files?

I just got a new external hard drive and will be getting my macbook pro next week. I was wondering if the external hard drive could be used as both a time machine and to have extra files on it? And if so how would you do that?

Time Machine requires a drive that is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), so you will need to check to make sure that this requirement is met.
A drive that the manufacturer says will work with both Mac and Windows will not work with Time Machine.

  • EM Application Log and Web Access Log growing too large on Redwood Server

    Hi,
We have a storage space issue on our Redwood SAP CPS Orcale servers and have found that the two log files above are the main culprits for this. These files are continually updated and I need to know what these are and if they can be purged or reduced down in size.
They have been in existence since the system has been installed and I have tried to access them but they are too large. I have also tried taking the cluster group offline to see if the file stops being updated but the file continues to be updated.
Please could anyone shed any light on this and what can be done to resolve it?
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi David,
    The file names are:
    em-application.log and web access.log
    The File path is:

  • Managed bean in both adfc-config.xml and faces-config.xml file

    hi,
i can see that it's possible to declare managed bean in both adfc-config.xml and faces-config.xml file.
is there any difference? which one is recommended?
    read here - http://www.jaypillai.com/tag/adf/
    but still not clear.
    thanks.

    Hi.
As you know ADF is a framework based on JSF.
In faces-config.xml you define general application manage beans. It offers you define manage beans for all application using JSF default scopes (application, session, request).
In adfc-config.xml you define general application manage beans using ADF Scopes. It means that you can use JSF default ones including "view, pageFlow and backing".
My recommendation is use only one point entry for your general manage beans. Use adfc-config.xml because allow you to use more scopes.

  • Require 9i Primary and Standby redo logs files same size?

    Hi,
We have 9.2.0.6 Oracle RAC (2 node) and configured data guard (physical standby).
I want to increase redo log files size, but i can't this do same time primary and standby side.
Is there a rule, primary and standby database instances have same size redo log files?
If I increase only primary redo log files, is there any side effect? However I try this issue on test system. I increased all primary redo log files(if status='INACTIVE' drop redo log group and add redo log group, switch logfile,...)
, but i couldn't changed standby side. So the system is work well. Is this correct solution or not? How can i increase both sides redo log files?
    Thank you for helps..

Thank you for your helps.. I found this issue answer:
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/manage_ps.htm#i1010448
Consequently, when you add or drop an online redo log file at the primary site, it is important that you synchronize the changes in the standby database by following these steps:
If Redo Apply is running, you must cancel Redo Apply before you can change the log files.
If the STANDBY_FILE_MANAGEMENT initialization parameter is set to AUTO, change the value to MANUAL.
Add or drop an online redo log file:
To add an online redo log file, use a SQL statement such as this:
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE ADD LOGFILE '/disk1/oracle/oradata/payroll/prmy3.log' SIZE 100M;
To drop an online redo log file, use a SQL statement such as this:
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE DROP LOGFILE '/disk1/oracle/oradata/payroll/prmy3.log';
Repeat the statement you used in Step 3 on each standby database.
Restore the STANDBY_FILE_MANAGEMENT initialization parameter and the Redo Apply options to their original states.
    bye..

  • Resizing online and standby redo log in dataguard setup.

In 10gr2 dataguard i would like to increase redo logsize from 50M to 100M.
    on primary
    standby_file_management=manual
added online redo groups with 100M
    log switched
drop old one and readded with 100m
    deleted log added in step2.
    same for standby redo logs.
    On standby
was able to resize standby redo logs.
but cannot resize online redologs status is clearing or clearing_current.
    please comment. thanks.

I assume you just had to wait until the Primary switched out of that online log so it became inactive at the standby as well? We track where the Primary is by marking the online redo log files at the standby as clearing_current so you can tell where the primary was at any given moment.
Make sure you create new standby redo log files at the Primary and Standby to match the new online redo log file size.

  • Where RFS exactly write redo data ?  ( archived redo log or standby redo log ) ?

    Good Morning to all ;
I am getting bit confused from oracle official link . REF_LINK : Log Apply Services
Redo data transmitted from the primary database is received by the RFS on the standby system ,
where the RFS process writes the redo data to either archived redo log files  or  standby redo log files.
In standby site , does rfs write redo data in any one file or both ?
    Thanks in advance ..

    GTS (DBA) wrote:
Primary & standby log file size should be same - this is okay.
    1) what are trying to disclose about  largest & smallest here ? -  You are confusing.
    Read: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e25608/log_transport.htm#SBYDB4752
"Each standby redo log file must be at least as large as the largest redo log file in the redo log of the redo source database. For administrative ease, Oracle recommends that all redo log files in the redo log at the redo source database and the standby redo log at a redo transport destination be of the same size."
    GTS (DBA) wrote:
    2) what abt group members ? should be same as primary or need  to add some members additionally. ?
Data Guard best practice for performance, is to create one member per each group in standby DB. on standby DB, one member per group is reasonable enough. why? to avoid write penalty; writing to more than one log files at the standby DB.
SCENARIO 1: if in your source primary DB you have 2 log member per group, in standby DB you can have 1 member  per group, additionally create an extra group.
    primary
    standby
    Member per group
    2
    1
    Number of log group
    4
    5
SCENARIO 2: you can also have this scenario 2 but i will not encourage it
    primary
    standby
    Member per group
    2
    2
    Number of log group
    4
    5

      - at this situation , can we force on standby site ? any possibilities ?
you can not force it , just size your standby redo files correctly and make sure you don not have network failure that will cause redo gap.
    hope there is clarity now

  • Unknown Error when I Logging and Transfer P2 Card files in FCP 6.0.6

I have been trying for the past two week to Log and Transfer P2 files to my external hardrive using FCP 6.0.6 unsuccessfully.
Originally I tried to Log and Transfer directly from the Panasonic HPX-170 in between my shooting. The first time it was a success but from then on I always get the same Unknown Error when attempting to transfer. When I encountered the Unknown Error during the second transfer I went on to create folders with the P2 contents on my external Hard Drive.
When I drag any of the P2 folder content on the Log and Transfer window I can see all the clips. I can successfully transfer small B-roll clips I have but any big size file (all my interviews) return an Unknown Error symbol at the end of the transfer. I believe this is probably why I didn't encounter any issues during my first time.
I tried deleting the preferences in FCP and then Logging and Transfer and it works if the systems settings are set for the Mac Pro but not for the external HD. The problem is I don't have enough space on my Mac. I have cleared 45GB of space but my P2 files total 54GB. I tried the same process with a Mac Power Book with FCP 5.1.4 and again in encounter the same problem.
The external HD is a 1TB Western Digital that I have used before with FCP for editing but never before with P2 files. Its in good working order and has 79GB free space remaining. Both the camera and the P2 cards (16GB and 4GB) are also performing as expected.
    I would appreciate any suggestions.

#36 - One or More P2 files failed to import.
Shane's Stock Answer #36 - "One or more clips failed to import..."
Very often in the field with this camera the camera operator will delete clips from the P2 card that they just don't like. That is the beauty of this camera. But, the still for that video file (located in the CLIP folder in the CONTENTS folder)...the still that you see when you are in the P2 Import window...is not deleted. So you will see the image, and the name, but the video file would have been deleted.
What you can do it compare the file names in the VIDEO folder and CLIP folder and see if anything is missing. If something is, then you know what the problem is. You can then just import the rest a few at time, skipping that one.
ALSO...in the P2 Import window...in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.
ALSO...make sure your file names aren't too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.
ALSO make sure that the folders that contain the CONTENTS folder doesn't have any odd characters like /!@#$%^&*()?.

  • Log and Transfer for MXF files (Canon 300XF) suddenly doesn't work

I've searched for a solution and I've pulled out a few hairs...
    We have 2 identical FCP7 MacPro workstations (2x2.66 dual-core Xeon, 16GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT, 256MB VRAM, OSX 10.6.8).
Both systems have successfully ingested MXF files captured by a Canon 300XF using Canon's XF plugin for FCP.
    Until today.
One system doesn't ingest the footage anymore.  One still does.
The faulty system sees the footage in Log and Transfer, but as we add the footage to the queue, the red exclaimation point pops up.  Hovering over the alert gives us: ERROR: UNKNOWN.
Nothing has changed in either system.
    Any ideas?  Gremlins maybe?
    Thanks!

...and a Canon XF Utility software uninstall/reinstall solved it.
    Oops.
Should have tried that before the 17 other things we tried.

  • How do I change the location of the coldfusion-out.log and coldfusion-error.log files in CF10

When I change the log location in ColdFusion Administrator it changes the location of most but not all the log files.  I have a requirement from my customer to place all log files on a separate partition on the server.  For ColdFusion 9 I was able to modify the registry settings to change StandardOut and StandardErr for the ColdFusion Jrun service.  This does not appear to the case for ColdFusion 10 which now uses Tomcat 7.
I tried modifying log4j.properties file and was able to relocate the hibernatesql.log, axis2.log, and esapiconfig.log but not the coldfusion-out.log.
I am running ColdFusion 10 Enterprise Edition on a 64-bit Windows 2008 Server.

The location of the rest of the ColdFusion logs can be changed in the ColdFusion Administrator.  Go to the Debugging and Logging section, Logging Settings.  There is a form at the top of the page where you can change the log storage location.
