Dataguard using ASM in primary node and FILESYSTEM in standby node

Hi There!
I need to configure a Dataguard, and my primary DB is working on ASM, the standby node is going to be using filesystems, so I want to know if there is a guide that I can follow in order to get this task successfully completed.
My operating system is Solaris 10, and the DB Release is 10.2.0.4. I want to know the best practices.
Also I want to remember some RMAN Restore and Recover techniques to have this configuration ready, up and running.
Thanks in Advance.
Paola
@>--->----

setting this up isn't that different to setting up a single instance standby on ASM,
the MAA guide is here
http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/availability/pdf/MAA_WP_10g_RACPrimarySingleInstancePhysicalStandby.pdf
this details the configuration using ASM on both sides, if you want to use filesystem storage on the standby then the following parameters will need to be changed
*.db_file_name_convert='+DATA/CHICAGO/','+DATA/BOSTON/','+RECOVERY/CHICAGO','+RECOVERY/BOSTON'
*.log_file_name_convert='+DATA/CHICAGO/','+DATA/BOSTON/','+RECOVERY/CHICAGO','+RECOVERY/BOSTON'
to something like
*.db_file_name_convert='+DATA/CHICAGO/','/oradata/boston','+RECOVERY/CHICAGO','/recovery/boston'
*.log_file_name_convert='+DATA/CHICAGO/','/oradata/boston','+RECOVERY/CHICAGO','/recovery/boston'
alternativly you can set the DB_CREATE_FILE_DEST and DB_CREATE_ONLINE_LOG_DEST_n parameters and let oracle create OMF files for the dataguard instance.

  • How to Create Primary DB and Physical/Logical Standby DB on the same host?

    Now I encounter a issue. I want to create one Primary DB and one Physical standby DB and one Logical standby DB on the same host.
    Create this env on the same host aims to test whether we can using EM Patching DP to apply patches on Primary/Physical/Logical DB successfully.
    I try to setup this env but fails. I want to know more related issues about create Primary DB /Physical DB/Logical DB on the same host and how to configure between them.
    Below steps is my try:
    1. Create Primary DB on the /scratch/primary_db
    2. Create Physical Db software only on the /scratch/physical_db
    3. Create Logical Db software only on the /scratch/logical_db
    4. Using EM Wizard to create physical standby database and logical standby database, and these two targets can show up on the "All Targets" Page.
    5. But when using EM Patching DP, it fails and the reason is the listener of physical and logical db cannot configured well.
    Issues:
    So I want to know about how to configure physical db and logical db's listener using EM or manually?
    If the listener name of Primary Db is LISTENER and the port is 1521,and the listener.ora is under the /scratch/primary_db/network/admin directory, then how to config physical db and logical db's listener's name and port?

    Hi,
    As this a test case then you need to create two more listener for each Oracle Home (/scratch/physical_db & /scratch/logical_db) make sure that they have different names and ports.
    Then add the new listeners manually using GC?
    Try it and let me know

  • Using ASM in a cluster, and new snapshot feature

    Hi,
    I'm currently studying ASM and trying to find some answers.
    From what I understand and experienced so far, ASM can only be used as a local storage solution. In other words it cannot be used by network access. Is this correct?
    How is the RDBMS database connecting to the ASM instance? Which process or what type of connection is it using? It's apparently not using listener, although the instance name is part of the database file path. How does this work please?
    How does ASM work in a cluster environment? How does each node in a cluster connect to it?
    As of 11g release 2, ASM provides a snapshot feature. I assume this can be used for the purpose of backup, but then each database should use it's own diskgroup, and I will still need to use alter database begin backup, correct?
    Thanks!

    From what I understand and experienced so far, ASM can only be used as a local storage solution. In other words it cannot be used by network access. Is this correct?Well, you are missing one point that it would entirely depend on the architecture that you are going to use. If you are going to use ASM for a single node, it would be available right there. If installed for a RAC system, ASM instance would be running on each node of the cluster and would be managing the storage which would be lying on the shared storage. The process ASMB would be responsible to exchange messages, take response and push the information back to the RDBMS instance.
    How is the RDBMS database connecting to the ASM instance? Which process or what type of connection is it using? It's apparently not using listener, although the instance name is part of the database file path. How does this work please?Listener is not need Markus as its required to create the server processes which is NOT the job of the ASM instance. ASM instance would be connecting the client database with itself immediately when the first request would come from that database to do any operation over the disk group. As I mentioned above, ASMB would be working afterwards to carry forward the request/response tasks.
    How does ASM work in a cluster environment? How does each node in a cluster connect to it? Each node would be having its own ASM instance running locally to it. In the case of RAC, ASM sid would be +ASMn where n would be 1, 2,... , going forward to the number of nodes being a part of teh cluster.
    As of 11g release 2, ASM provides a snapshot feature. I assume this can be used for the purpose of backup, but then each database should use it's own diskgroup, and I will still need to use alter database begin backup, correct?You are probably talking about the ACFS Snapshot feature of 11.2 ASM. This is not to take the backup of the disk group but its like a o/s level backup of the mount point which is created over the ASM's ACFS mount point. Oracle has given this feature so that you can take the backup of your oracle home running on the ACFS mount point and in the case of any o/s level failure like someone has deleted certain folder from that mountpoint, you can get it back through the ACFS snapshot taken. For the disk group, the only backup available is metadata backup(and restore) but that also does NOT get the data of the database back for you. For the database level backup, you would stillneed to use RMAN only.

  • One 32 bit node and one 64 bit node

    I am planning to do a RAC install for learning purposes.
    I plan to use the document
    http://www.idevelopment.info/data/Oracle/DBA_tips/Oracle10gRAC/CLUSTER_12.shtml
    I plan to use
    node 1 is a 64 bit desktop
    node 2 will be a 32 bit desktop
    Is this a problem considering I am using one 32 bit desktop and one 64 bit desktop ?

    I haven't done what you are trying, that said; you should be fine as long as the you run 32bit OS on both machines. Your 32bit box will not let you run a 64bit OS, but your 64bit box will let you run 32bit OS. If you already have the hardware, just try it, all you wold be investing is time (IMHO, most ROI for learning). Put 32 bit RHEL/OEL/CentOS on both boxes and try.
    Good Luck!

  • Cellular data being used while connected to WIFI and not in standby

    I am connected to my home WIFI on my iphone 4, but while my router is not connected to internet (so I should not have internet on my iphone), I noticed I am still receiving push notifications,
    I finally read here that while on standby, wifi is turned off and 3G is used, ok.
    now here is the problem, looking at the General>Usage>Cellular Usage, even if I am not on standby and I am using the phone, I have data usage (sent and recieved), I reopen the Celluar Usage and see the numbers are constantly increasing, and more strange is some (not all) of the push notification do come through (eg in my case for an app called FavFriends),
    another friend of mine has a simillar problem on iphone 4s.
    what is this celluar usage in the background?????

    from what I knew so far, iphone should not use the 3G if wifi is connected, eventhough there is no internet on that wifi,
    so in my case, if iphone is actually detecting no internet and switching to 3G, I should have internet on all apps (safari, etc..) which i dont, just data usage increasing with no internet in any apps (that is a 3G usage which is limited more than even when on standby),
    and if it is not supposed to switch, it brings another question, that if 3G is used when wifi connected (with no internet), are there any background 3G usage (push notifications, etc), while wifi has internet and it is supposed to utilize the wifi internet?
    so basically, I was under the assumption that 3G would not be used unless wifi is disconnected, regardless of internet access, and I dont find anything that says otherwise.

  • Log transport failing to standby host , target using ASM.

    Hi,
    Please help me in the following scenario. I have two nodes ASM1 & ASM2 with RHEL4 U5 OS. On node ASM1 there is database ORCL using ASM diskgroups DATA & RECOVER and archive location is on '+RECOVER/orcl/'. On ASM2 node, I have to configure STDBYORCL (standby) database without ASM (i.e. on FS). I have taken the copy of database ORCL via RMAN, using following command:
    run{
    copy datafile 1 to '/opt/oracle/admin/df1.dbf';
    copy datafile 2 to '/opt/oracle/admin/df2.dbf';
    copy datafile 3 to '/opt/oracle/admin/df3.dbf';
    copy datafile 4 to '/opt/oracle/admin/df4.dbf';
    copy current controlfile for standby to '/opt/oracle/admin/stdbyorcl_control01.ctl'
    Then I have ftp'd all to ASM2 and put them on FS /u01/oradata. Have made all necessary changes in primary and standby database pfile and then mount the standby database and put it in managed recovery mode. Unfortunately, log transport service is not working and archives are not getting shipped to standby host.

  • Data Guard: db_file_name_convert/log_file_name_convert when using ASM/OMF

    All,
    I have a call currently open with Oracle regarding the setting of the parameters db_file_name_convert and log_file_name_convert in a data guard environment. We use ASM / OMF for storage and file naming and my question is basically do these parameters have to be set. The documentation says they do where the file structure is different between PRIMARY and STANDBY.
    I have successfully tested failover and switchover without these parameters. I have also added a new tablespace on the PRIMARY and watched it create a new OMF datafile on standby when the logs are switched.
    I just can't see a reason for setting them when using ASM / OMF.
    I'm hoping someone can enlighten me here because I'm getting nowhere whith support. The following is our Data Guard setup:
    PRIMARY
    DB_NAME=IBSLIVE
    DB_UNIQUE_NAME=IBSLIVE
    ASM Disk Groups:
    +PRODDATA (Data Files, Control Files, Redo Logs)
    +PRODFLASH (Archive Logs, Flashback Logs, RMAN backups)
    +PRODLOGS (Multiplexed Control & Redo Logs)
    STANDBY
    DB_NAME=IBSLIVE
    DB_UNIQUE_NAME=IBSDR
    ASM Disk Groups:
    +DRDATA (Data Files, Control Files, Redo Logs)
    +DRFLASH (Archive Logs, Flashback Logs, RMAN backups)
    +DRREDO (Multiplexed Control & Redo Logs)
    Many Thanks,
    Ian.

    Ian,
    I'm having similar thoughts.
    I have created a new instance with files in asm under +datadisk/obosact (this is the smae name as primary)
    I then modify the db_unique_name from obosact to obosactdr as is required for standby to work
    When I recover (duplicate target database for standby; ) I find that the files are in datadisk/obosactdr not in the datadisk/obosact area
    I found this reference http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/availability/pdf/MAA_WP_10g_RACPrimaryRACPhysicalStandby.pdf
    4. Connect to the ASM instance on one standby host, and create a directory within the DATA disk group that has the same name as the DB_UNIQUE_NAME of the standby database. For example: SQL> ALTER DISKGROUP data ADD DIRECTORY '+DATA/BOSTON';
    This step seems to indicate that the location of the files is determined by the db_unique_name not the db_file_name_convert paramenter
    DId you ever resolve the issue?

  • New 11.2 database instalation using ASM

    Hello peeps,
    My unix team has asked me how many mount points i would like on the unix system? Normally i use OFA of /u01, /u02, /u03, /u04
    With this new database i will be installing dataguard using ASM. So my question is : what do i tell the Unix team for mount points?
    Does ASM just use one mount point /u01?

    Hi,
    The answer might not have helped you as such. ASM is totally different from what you were used to in normal NFS or RAW. It talkes a lot more to configure and you need to know what you are doing. If this is a production system, I would suggest that you get hold of a decent book on ASM as the guide suggested might not be adequate for a full fledge Prod installation for an ASM newbie. ASM allows you to present LUNs or disks to the database is a much more different manner than you might be used to.

  • TreeView - Expand only selected node and collapse others

    Hi
    How I can expand only selected node and collapse other nodes that was expanded earlier?!

    Ghostenigma,
    switch Option Strict On. I've tried to analyze the code but it's not usable due to type ignorance.
    BTW, Goto is not required here. ELSEif means it's only executed if the previous expressions are not true.
    Armin
    Ignore other code and give an reply for what I've asked else you are not obligated to post a reply at all!
     I am not sure if you took the "type ignorance" part wrong but, Armin was only trying to give you helpful information which i would give too.  Option Strict is a GOOD thing to use and the GoTo statements are not needed inside your ElseIf
    statements.  As far as that goes, i would not recommend using GoTo in any modern .Net programming.
     Anyways, the problem is with the way you are Adding and Removing all the child nodes every time the nodes are DoubleClicked and when they are Collapsing.  I just simulated your code to add the sub nodes when a main node is double clicked.
    You can just use the NodeMouseDoubleClick event instead of the TreeView`s DoubleClick event to make it a little easier on yourself too.
     This corrected the problem for me.
    Public Class Form1
    Private r As New Random ' this random class is only for my simulation of adding sub nodes (not needed)
    Private expanded As TreeNode
    Private Sub TreeView1_BeforeCollapse(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.TreeViewCancelEventArgs) Handles TreeView1.BeforeCollapse

    Dim pn As TreeNode = e.Node
    While pn.Parent IsNot Nothing
    pn = pn.Parent
    End While
    If expanded IsNot Nothing And expanded IsNot pn Then expanded.Collapse()
    expanded = pn
    End Sub
    Private Sub TreeView1_NodeMouseDoubleClick(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.TreeNodeMouseClickEventArgs) Handles TreeView1.NodeMouseDoubleClick
    'Added this part to collapse the prior expanded node and set the (expanded) node to the new one
    If expanded IsNot Nothing And expanded IsNot e.Node Then
    expanded.Collapse()
    Dim pn As TreeNode = e.Node
    While pn.Parent IsNot Nothing
    pn = pn.Parent
    End While
    expanded = pn
    End If
    'This just simulates your code to add the new sub nodes to the main node that was double clicked
    'you need to put your code here instead of this.
    Dim str() As String = {"one.mp3", "Two.mp4", "Three.mvk"}
    Dim s As String = str(r.Next(0, 3))
    e.Node.Nodes.Add(s, s)
    e.Node.Expand()
    End Sub
    End Class
     PS - I notice you are adding more and more Images to your ImageList every time you double click on a node.  If you just add the Images to it once when the app is loading then you can just use the Image Key to set the correct Image to the newly
    added node.
    If you say it can`t be done then i`ll try it

  • PREPARING OAS on standby node

    Hello Everyone,
    I have 2 HP-UX servers working in a ServiceGuard cluster. One node is DB node and other is OAS node. They are also standby nodes for each others function (during failure db package goes to oas server and vice versa).
    With db it was easy for me, but how to prepare oas environment on db server?
    the shared filesystems which will be moved with oas package contains logs from application and application's war files. Binaries are not shared.
    Sholud I only copy the binaries from OAS and thats it ?
    Regards
    Radek

    You should still be able to bring up the standby as read only. During managed recovery the database is in a mounted state and therefore can't be connected to via the listener.

  • ASM on primary and physical standby on normal filesystem

    Hi
    I have seen he white paper by oracle on migrating a database to ASM with minimal downtime using ASM for a physical standby my requirement is reverse.
    I need to have a ASM for a primary database but no ASM for standby database.
    How do we set the parameter db_file_name_convert
    regards
    Hrishy

    db_file_name_convert covers the folder path for the files. I don't think, there will be issue.
    If we use rman, it will use the folder path per db_file_name_convert and retain the old file names. OMF naming will apply for the new files.

  • Can Grid Control 10gR2 create a standby database when primary db uses ASM?

    Does anyone know if Grid Control 10gR2 will be able to create a standby database when the primary database uses ASM for data files, redo log files, and archive log files but the standby database will use mounted disks? If it can, would it matter that the primary db will be a RAC cluster and the standby will be a single instance db?

    I appreciate your reply and hope you are correct. Have you had a look at the 10gR2 Grid Control to confirm this or are you only going on published statements? The reason I ask is because previous versions of Grid Control claimed to support ASM but they would only allow you to work with them AFTER you had created a standby database manually but you couldn't actually use Grid Control to create a standby database from a primary database that had its log files on ASM disks.

  • Architecture for APEX using iAS 10.1.2 and 10g with Dataguard replication

    We are currently using APEX in a stand-alone architecture using iAS 10.1.2 on with 10g as the DB(all on the same server). Our APEX apps are fast becoming a significant part of our production environment and I would like to set up a redundant failover site using Dataguard replication. I am very familiar with the DB failover, but I am struggling with how I can set up iAS on the standby server.
    Oracle guidelines for iAS failover using Dataguard (this is not AS Dataguard) specify that the primary and standby server local hostname must be identical for the failover architecture to work unless you use a virtual host name. Due to restrictions in our environment I am not able to set the lcoal hostname the same on the primary and standby servers. As an alternative I installed iAS(10.1.4) using a virtual hostname on my primary server, but it appears that the servername that shows up in all the installation references after the installation is still the actual server name, not the virtual name.
    I am looking for guidance from someone that has successfully set up a iAS failover architecture using dataguard on servers that do not have the same local hostname.
    thanks

    Hi,
    I have the same problem. Do you find something about putting jsf in OAS 10.1.2 ?
