Datasocket bug in Win2K -- stops updating

===OVERVIEW===
I have a simple Datasocket system that produces a very strange problem on Win2K
After a variable amount of time (between 30 seconds and 30 minutes), the datasocket reader simply stops receiving updates from the writer.
The system involves a basic DS Writer and DS Reader which communicate through the localhost DS Server. I have included the Reader and Writer VIs for your testing. Also, it seems to be easier to reproduce if the VIs are compiled into executables. I have included the executables for testing. The problem is also reproducable when the "reader" is actually a C++ program (using Measurement Studio) that is built into an OCX component (not included).
NOTE: This bug does not seem to be reproducable on WinNT.
I have spent a lot of time debugging this system... with no luck. I have narrowed it down so that it is very reproducable. Just run the Datasocket Server and the two attached EXEs on Win2K (Professional) and wait a while... eventually you will see the reader stops getting updates.
===SYSTEM DESCRIPTION===
The DS Writer connects to the DS Server in "write" mode and sends an array of doubles. An "attribute" is specified as another array of doubles. The writer then updates the connection. The two arrays are meant to represent values and timestamps.
The DS Reader connects in "read-auto-update" mode. It waits for an update and then reads the array and its "attribute array".
Have a look at the attached examples... they are very simple.
===PROBLEM===
The problem is reproducable on our Win2K machines.
After a variable amount of time (usually not more than 10 minutes) the reader simple stops receiving updates. The DS connection is reported to be "Active: Connected" and status is "ConnectionActive".
===NOTES===
I am using LV6.02 and the latest version of Datasockets 4.0 (370).
The 2 VIs are in the same execution system: User Interface.
Power management on the PC is set to "always on" and all power saving, sleep functions, screen savers, etc. are disabled.
I am using the "old" datasockets VIs (open connection. read/write double vector, close connection, etc.). I realize that the "bug" I am reporting might actually be fixed if I used the new Datasocket VIs that come with LV6i, but we really don't want to use those VIs. We find the older VIs better because:
1. The older VIs seem to be faster at writing large vectors. We discovered this through testing.
2. Reliability of maintaining connections. The older VIs appear to be better at maintaining connections.
3. The new VIs have trouble getting the items to appear (and with the correct icon) in the "browse measurement data" window.
No other significant network activity is seen when this bug occurs. It seems to happen randomly.

I am sorry, I coudn't find the original post,
so I am not sure what the problem is.
Just though to tell that that I had problems with
LV 5.1 on win98/NT and datasocket(?).
I am not sure if datasocket is the cause of problem,
since we haven't been able to explore and test the
system properly.
We have a measurement system which measures data
through serial ports, saves it and uses datasocket
to share data accross a factory.
Sometimes like once in two weeks or in two months
or once in a year the measuring system jams. The
Windows still works. We haven't been able to
find where the jamming happens but it started
after I changed the program to use datasocket
instead of netdde.

  • Bug:iTunes 7 stops updating podcasts that I do not want it to stop updating

Some podcasts that I subscribe to are updated as often as every hour (for example, CNN's hourly update). I do not listen to the podcasts every hour, but always want the latest podcast there, or the podcast becomes useless. iTunes keeps deciding not to update those podcasts, and then I have to manually tell it to keep updating. There is no way to turn this off. Since I listen to a lot of podcasts of news shows and other content that is only useful to listen to soon after it was broadcast, this really degrades the usefulness of listening to podcasts in iTunes.
Apple needs to provide a way to disable this behavior, or even better, to allow users to set a per-podcast update frequency and maximum stored podcast count. (I want all available unheard podcasts for my comedy podcasts, for example, but I only want the latest one or two podcasts for news podcasts because older ones are no longer useful.)
Apple describes this behavior on this web page:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301872
"You've subscribed to a podcast but have more than five unplayed episodes. iTunes will stop automatically downloading newer episodes. You may get the following message:
iTunes has stopped updating this podcast because you have not listened to any episodes recently. Would you like to resume updating this podcast?
You can click Yes to continue downloading additional episodes. Or you can just listen to any part of any episode and a new episode will download at the next update."
    Thanks!

And you're sure no one in your household is downloading them?

  • My E-mail won't stop updating itself?

Hi, as I said above the E-mail hasn't been able to stop updating itself and it's depleting my battery quicker than usual. I've tried turning off the push option and turned the iPhone off and on several times. It still does the updating on its own. Is this just a bug or is there a problem? Would also appriciate some tips or advise. Thanks in advance.

Change your Fetch schedule to a longer period (Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Fetch New Data).

    hi there,
i've also seen this happen, but not on adjustments. to me it happens if i'm in stack pick mode, or whatever you call it, the one where you compare pics from the same stack. sometimes, just after importing, the viewer will stop updating. quitting and restarting aperture solves the problem.
i've only seen this happen when aperture is doing background work at the same time (making thumbnails or previews after an import). at a recent music festival this was very annoying, but it only happened at the beginning. afterwards, everything worked fine and i was able to upload pictures faster than lots of my colleagues who shoot in jpeg (i only shoot in raw) and work in photo mechanic/photoshop or even in lightroom.

  • How to stop update notification for one app (iMovie) that I do not want to update

How to stop update notification for one app (iMovie) that I do not want to update. I do not want iMovie 10 taking up nearly 3 gb on my hard disc. iMovie 9 is just fine and only takes up 1.5 gb. But I get notifications to update and don't know how to turn it off. I've gone into the Purchases tab of the App store and deleted it. I don't want to turn off Update notifications (which is irrelevant in any case because I see no option to do that in Notifications system preference pane). I just don't want to be bugged about iMovie updates. The only option I'm given is to postpone the next reminder until the next morning. -- Franklin

Interesting; never came across that - here is the window I get (just double clicked on a random doc in the trash):

  • Glances stop updating

i have noticed that after a while glances just stop updating. This includes the weather app glance. Is this a problem with the app or with the Apple Watch OS. Also, how do you get the glance to work again. I would hate to restart my watch several time a day.

Having the same issue.  I've noticed it tends to happen after installing a new 3rd party app.  The only way I've gotten it to resume updating is to do a restart on the watch.  Definitely one of those version 1 bugs I hope they fix on 1st update.

  • Mail RSS Feeds Stopped Updating

    Hi there,
In the past week, I've noticed that my Mail RSS feeds have stopped updating and I'm also unable to open/subscribe to new RSS feeds.
When I try to click on a new RSS feed in Safari, I get the following error message:
Safari can’t open the page “feed://www.vanilladays.com/feed/”. The error was: “Operation could not be completed. (Mach error 268435460 - (ipc/send) timed out)” (NSMachErrorDomain:268435460) Please choose Report Bugs to Apple from the Safari menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message.
In parallel to this, I've noticed that Safari is is also taking around 5 minutes to load (the is normal once loaded). I've got a separate topic about this.
Any ideas on what I can do to fix this? I was having these problems before I updated OSX yesterday.
    Thanks for any help,
    Ste

i was able to find this on another website...
CXL: Safari fails to display RSS feeds when CPU is under load or free disk space on system drive is small. That pretty much sums it up. It's annoying, too, because if Time Machine is doing its hourly backup or I'm converting video files, Safari's RSS display repeatedly fails with the same error message: "Mach errore 268451843 - (ipc/rcv) timed out" or "NSMachErrorDomain:268451843". Under the same conditions, Safari fetches and displays normal webpages perfectly fine. Filed: 5610533.
but this doesn't make sense, I have about 4.5 GB free on my startup drive....
i also found this apple thread which is about the same issue, but also has no resolution..

if anyone figures anything out please help! thank you!

After updating my iPhone4s to the lastest update my photostream stopped updated onto my comuter.  From my phone it looks like pictures have been moved into the photostream folder... but they are not showing up on my computer.  Help!
I have signed out then back into the cloud.  I have comfirmed location of the photostream folder.  I have have even restored settings on my phone.  any ideas on what I can do to get it working again?  or do I have to accept defect, and manually save my photos?

There's a whole lot to read in your post, and frankly I have not read it all.
Having said that, this troubleshooting guide should help:

In particular, pay attention to the mobile device support sections near the bottom, assuming you have already done the items above it.

  • How can I make sure iTunes doesn't stop updating my podcasts

OK I'm subscribed to multiple podcasts, but I don't always get a chance to listen to them so some of them will stop updating and it says something like "iTunes has stopped updating this podcast because you haven't listened to any episodes lately".
How can I make sure it doesn't do that? When I do get to listen to my podcasts, I would really like it if they weren't 3 weeks old.
    Message was edited by: MacAttakk

someone made a script that fixes this. It seems to work for me. If you want it to do it automatically just make an iCal even for every 3 days or something that runs this script.

  • Multiple apple ID's stopped updating to pc

I have multiple apple ID's for multiple devices.  I use icloud on my pc to sync the photostreams for all of them.  In the last 2 weeks they all stopped updating completely but one.  I have tried everything but 2 dont work and one still does. I have turned it on/off uninstalled, reset photostream.  Is there someway that they eventually just stop working?

  • My 80 gig ipod color stops updating half way through

My ipod 80 gig color stops updating half way through the synch process. I have tried to restore it and it still fails and gives me an error message saying it cannot read or wrtie to the ipod after it is half way loaded after trying to load 5000+ songs only it gets to about 2,250 and stops.

It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

If necessary, post the resultings numbers and we can verify what the next steps to take.

  • ITunes stops updating podcasts / iTunes has stopped updating this podcast because you have not listened to any episodes recently. Would you like to resume updating this podcast?

    Hi,
My iTunes is set to automatically update podcasts and keep the last five episodes of each podcast.
However, iTunes appears to stop updating podcasts after several (five?) unwatched episodes and gives me an exclamation mark in the podcast overview. Clicking on that, I get the message: "iTunes has stopped updating this podcast because you have not listened to any episodes recently. Would you like to resume updating this podcast?"
This is not what I intend... and not  what I  told iTunes to do... (at least this my reading of the below settings)
This stopping is rather less then ideal: (1) if I am going away for two weeks, which I often do, I would still like to have the last five days of news, not the last five days of news back from the date I left, (2) I need to click update for approx. 20 podcast on regular basis, (3) my iPhone is synced to iTunes as soon as I come home, if iTunes does not have the podcasts downloaded, they are not copied over to the iPhone, and the iPhone will attempt to download the episodes via 3G next time I play the podcast on the go, (4) I am mainly using iTunes functions, such as smart playlists and podcasts, through another app (Plex, a fullscreen media player) and it is a pain to have to go to iTunes to manually do things. That is why this bothering me...
How can I get iTunes to behave as intended? (From reading through old posts I know that there is a Doug script adressing this problem, which I have just set up, but I would prefer to use internal settings if possible... maybe I am just missing a setting)
    Thank you for your ideas!

Thank you for the response, Roger!
OK, that's how it is then.
The iTunes podcasts settings should be reworded in that case because it suggest something different from what it does. And, of course, it would be ideal for Apple to make this more flexible and allow users to set up their podcast downloads in their way and not be so motherly (c'mon, Apple, your users are not as dumb as you think, and they have uncapped Internet connections these days anyway)...
Btw., for anyone interested, this is external script I am using now:
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=updateexpiredpodcasts
Including the "cron job" setup here:
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/2011/12/updated-update-expired-podcasts-v2-2-and-l aunchd-project/
Cannot tell how well it works because I have just set it up, other members of the forum say it works for them...
If anyone knows of in-app solutions, please share...

  • IPod wont stop updating when ipod is connected, wont update on itunes 7!

What is honestly wrong, every time i update my ipod now with itunes 7, it wont stop updating and it says its updating but it isnt, why is it doing this with itunes 7???

I am having the same problem, did you get an answer on how to correct? Every since I downloaded the update, the update keeps going and there is no way to disconnect the IPOD button there anymore..

  • Mail stops updating

I have a new issue with Mail where it stops updating. I have it set up with my Gmail via IMAP and have it set to check for new mail every minute. I do not have any input managers installed for Mail.
I will often get new mail and Mail won't notify me. I can see it at the Gmail website, but it won't show up in Mail. Right clicking on the dock icon and picking "Get new mail" does not work, nor does right clicking in mail and picking "Synchronize Gmail". No errors appear and Mail plays the "no new messages" beep.
However, relaunching mail will fix the problem, but only temporarily. So, it shows the inbox as empty, but if I relaunch mail, it will get the new mail and synchronize fine. This tells me that my account information is entered correctly because Mail can connect, it just stops working occasionally until I relaunch it. This is an annoyance because I can't rely on it to tell me if I have new mail.
Anyone else have this problem or have any help for me? Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

I don’t know how to solve your problem, but telling
Mail to go offline, then online again (Mailbox >
Go Online/Offline) might also work and you may
find it more convenient -- you can put a button in
    the toolbar for that.
That seems to do the trick, and it's definitely a lot easier than shutting down Mail. Thanks for the tip!

Unknown "source"?  Do you mean unknown "error" followed by a number?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3221
Follow the instructions in the article.  When you connect your phone again, you may have to press both the home and sleep/wake buttons until the Apple logo reappears, then continue pressing the home button until iTunes detects the phone in recovery mode.
