Dates and MS SQL

Hi - I'm having a hard time with dates and MS SQL as I've
just upgraded our DB from Access and it's doing my head in.
The problem I'm having is when I input a date such as
10/05/2006 it is being displayed as 05/10/2006 and then if I update
the record it switches back to 10/05/2006 and vice-a-versa.
In my text field the code is :
value="#DateFormat(lastcalled, 'dd/mm/yyyy')#"
when I submit to db the code is:
lastcalled=#CreateODBCDateTime(lastcalled)#
If I take the dateFormat off I don't get the problem however
the date isn't displayed correctly.
I'm sure it's something small that I'm missing.....
Regards,
Jared.

> The problem I'm having is when I input a date such as
10/05/2006
The problem here can be summarised by asking a person from
USA what that
date is, then asking someone from a different country.
A USAn will say "5 October". Almost everyone else will say
"10 May".
A computer will do much the same thing, depending on its
locale settings.
One the other hand, if you have "13/10/2006" (or
"10/13/2006"), almost
anyone, from wherever they are (and computers, generally,
too), will work
out it's NOT "the tenth of Thirteenember", it's "13 Oct".
The problem here is that dd/mm/yyyy or mm/dd/yyyy -formatted
strings are
ambiguous for about a third of the year (from the first to
the twelfth of
each month).
If your locale settings are uniform across the board
(INCLUDING the "locale
settings" of the person entering the date), then you can get
away with
allowing them to input dd/mm/yyyy (or mm/dd/yyyy, if you must
However it's trick to get the humans doing the data entry to
behave, so
simply having:
Enter your birthday: [ ]
Is not gonna work all the time, cos you might enter 4/5/66,
but I might
enter 5/4/66. Even if you do this:
Enter your birthday (dd/mm/yyyy): [ ]
People will ignore you. I guess you can then ***-u-me they
did what
they're told, but it's still not optimal.
The best option is to break the dd, the mm and the yyyy bits
down into
separate inputs. Either have three text inputs, three drop
downs, a
date-selector-widget, or something like that, in which there
is no scope
left for ambiguity.
Then you always know which bits of data represent which bits
of the date,
and you never have any ambiguity problems.

    when i am trying to displaying date in my jsp page errors occurs saying that java.util.date and java.sql.date are matching..
    i have some sql statements which i need to execute in the page.so i cant delete that import sql statement.
    so what is the solution for this.

    You should use full names.
    java.util.Date date;
    java.sql.Date sdate;
    ..And it may be a good idea to delete one of the two "import" declaration of packages.

    The classes you are referring to are part of the Java API. Third party jars have no impact on that. And you can't change to the order because java.sql.Data is derived from java.util.Date. So the second must load before the first.
    And if you have two jar files with those classes in them (and not classes that use them) then you either should already know how to use them or you should stop trying to do whatever you are doing because it isn't going to work.

  • Conversions between java.util.Date, java.util.Timestamp and java.sql dates

    I am coding a hoilday booking system using JSP to interact with a SQL Server database. On my JSP form which retrieves the information I have a little javascript pop-up date selector which appears to be returning a Timestamp value although the string value is visable in the entry field. Can I pass this to a javabean as a Timestamp, so far I have only passed strings? Also I then have to enter it in the database and so will need to convert it to an sql date type but I dont know which one is best. Previous to using the Timestamp returning calendar I was just entering text and parsing it to a util.Date in the bean and then converting that to an sql.Date for entry in the database. That worked fine but I want to use the pop-up any ideas? Also my bean won't compile if I declare java.util.Timestamp t;(cannot resolve symbol Timestamp !) even though I have imported util.

    First of all, java.util.Timestamp does not exist. You probably need java.sql.Timestamp.
    java.sql.Date and java.sql.Timestamp inherit from java.util.Date. So converting from java.sql.Date or java.sql.Timestamp to java.util.Date is easy, you don't have to do anything.
    To convert a java.util.Date to a java.sql.Timestamp, do something like this:
    import java.sql.Timestamp;
    import java.util.Date;
    Date date = new Date();
    Timestamp ts = new Timestamp(date.getTime());Jesper

  • Date and Time data types

    I've read that there are limitations with EJB QL queries when dealing with Date and Time objects. Specifically, Ive read that its recommended that longs (milliseconds) should be used in EJB QL queries instead of java.sql.Date and java.sql.Time. Ive also read that, in the where clause, the operators >= and <= cant be used when comparing date or time objects. Is this accurate?
    If the first limitation is true, then does the date and time fields have to be represented as longs in the entity beans? and do the mapped columns (in the tables) have to be of numeric types for successfull synchronization?
    When using longs for dates and times, can the >= and <= operators be used in the where clause?

    Hi ,
    I am facing the same problem and my scenario is also same (BAPI's).
    So can you please tell me how you overcome this problem .
    Thanks,
    Rahul

  • Need help in using SQL in a jsp file to compare date and time

    hi every one,
    Actually I am doing a project using JSP. I need to compare a date field in the database (MS Acess) to the current system date and time. I have to do this in a select statement.
    I have alredy defined a variable of type Date in the JSP file and I am comparing this variable to the date in the database through a select statemant.
    Here is what I am doing
    SimpleDateFormat sdf = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss");
              java.util.Date today = new java.util.Date();
              String myDate=sdf.format(today);
    query = "SELECT Car_ID, Model_ID, Year, Ext_Color, Price from Cars where EDate <= "+myDate+" ;";
    EDate is the feild in the database and it's format is (5/12/2008 5:29:47 PM) it is of type Date/Time in MS Acess.
    when I execute the query it gives the following error
    SQL error:java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Syntax error (missing operator) in query expression 'EDate <= 2008-10-16 08:10:07'.
    I hope any one can help me with that error and answer my question, I've tried too many things but nothing helps
    Thanks in advance :-)

    Hi,
    When the comparision is needed to be done with the current date , we don't need to send in Java
    Date then format it and compare with MS Acess Date.
    In MS Access we have Date() function which will give you the current date.
    So you can try rewriting your query as following :
    query = "SELECT Car_ID, Model_ID, Year, Ext_Color, Price from Cars where EDate <= Date() ;"; ---------------------
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks

  • Data services with SQL Server 2008 and Invalid time format variable

    Hi all
    Recently we have switched from DI on SQL Server 2005, to DS(Date Services) on SQL Server 2008. However I have faced an odd error on the query that I was running successfully in DI.
    I validate my query output using a validation object to fill either Target table (if it passes), or the Target_Fail table (if it fails). Before sending data to the Target_Fail table, I map the columns using a query to the Target_Fail table. As I have a column called 'ETL_Load_Date' in that table, which I should fill it with a global variable called 'Load_Date'. I have set this global variable in the script at the very first beginning of the job. It is a data variable type:
    $Load_Date = to_char(sysdate(),'YYYY.MM.DD');
    When I assign this global variable to a datetime data type cloumn in my table and run the job using Data Services, I get this error:
    error message for operation <SQLExecute>: <[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Invalid time format>.
    However I didn't have this problem when I was running my job on the SQL Server 2005 using Data Integrator. The strange thing is that, when I debug this job, it runs completely successfully!!
    Could you please help me to fix this problem?
    Thanks for your help in advance.

    Thanks for your reply.
    The ETL_Date is a datetime column and the global variable is date data type. I have to use the to_char() function to be able to get just the date part of the current system datetime. Earlier I had tried date_part function but it returns int, which didn't work for me.
    I found what the issue was. I don't know why there were some little squares next to the name of the global variable which I had mapped to the ETL_Date in the query object!!! The format and everything was OK, as I had the same mapping in other tables that had worked successfully.
    When I deleted the column in the query object and added it again, my problem solved.

  • How to replace a dates on a SQL query on Visual Studio (and get the query to work in there in the first place)?

    Morning all,
    I've just been assigned a report-related project but I have not created much of anything in C# or .Net before!
    I was wondering if someone could help me get started. Here are the specifications:
    Basically, I am to create an automated report application. I have the query and I will include it further down
    in this post. The page is to have a couple blanks to specify the Start Date and End Date and replace those dates in the query, and generate the report. What I need some help on is how to make the SQL query work in the application which I will connect to the
    intended database to generate the report (basic I know, but I'm new at this) on Visual Studio 2010. I also need some help on programming the Start Date blank and End Date blank so that what the user types in for those blanks will replace the date fields in
    the SQL query, then generate the report with the new dates.
    I appreciate the help!

    Could you elaborate more on what this code does in general?
    Does it generate a table with the data between specified dates? If so, where is the table shown?
    Where does one enter in the specified start and end dates on the Web Application? Do I have to create start and end date blanks and link them to the code for it to work?
    Sorry for the inconvenience - I'm just really new at this. Thanks!

    You can search the forums for that error message and find previous discussions - they all boil down to the same problem.  Somewhere in your query that calls this function, the code invoked implicitly converts from string to date/datetime.  In general,
    this works in any version of sql server if the runtime settings are correct for the format of the string data.  The fact that it works in one server and not in another server suggests that the query executes with different settings - and I'll assume for
    the moment that the format of the data involved in this conversion is consistent within the database/resultset and consistent between the 2 servers.
    I suggest you read Tibor's guide to the datetime datatype (via the link to his site below) first - then go find the actual code that performs this conversion.  It may not be in the function you posted, since that function also executes other functions.
    You also did not post the query that calls this function, so this function may not, in fact, be the source of the problem at all.

  • SQL Inseting a Set Of Data To Run SQL Queries and Produce a Data Table

    I am an absolute newbie to SQL.
    I have purchased the book "Oracle 10g The Complete Reference" by Kevin Loney.

    I receive the following message: drop table Newspaper;
    'drop' is not recognised as an external or internal command, operable programme or batch file.
    Any idea how one would overcome this initial proble?

    You need to be in SQL*Plus logged in as a user.
    This page which I created for my Oracle students may be of some help:
    http://www.morganslibrary.org/reference/setup.html
    But to logon using "/ as sysdba" you must be in SQL*Plus (sqlplus.exe).

  • Show SQL issue on Posting Date and Aging Date

    Hi Folks,
    When I am running a report >>> the report pops up with the some parmeters >>
    In my scenario u201CAging Dateu201D forumla is calculated as the last day of the every month.
    if month (currentdate) = 1 then date((year(CurrentDate)-1),12,31) else
    date(year(currentdate),month(CurrentDate),1)-1
    Example : if 9( 23 sep 2010 ) = 1 then date ((2010(23 Sep 2010)-1),12,31) else date(2010(23 sep 2010),9( 23 Sep 2010),1)-1.
    Issues :
    For some reports the Aging Date parameter is poping up but for some of the reports the Aging Date forumla is calculating in the behind based on the u201CPost Dateu201D.
    Here is my Record Selection :
    (not isnull({CLARITY_TDL.SERV_AREA_ID}) and {CLARITY_TDL.SERV_AREA_ID}
    in {?Service Area} or 0 in {?Service Area}) and
    (not isnull({CLARITY_DEP.SPECIALTY}) and {CLARITY_DEP.SPECIALTY} in {?Specialty} or {?Specialty} =
    "Specialty(s)" or {?Specialty} = "NONE") and
    (not isnull({CLARITY_TDL.PERFORMING_PROV_ID}) and {CLARITY_TDL.PERFORMING_PROV_ID} in {?Service Provider} or
    {?Service Provider} = "Provider(s)" or {?Service Provider} = "NONE") and
    {CLARITY_TDL.POST_DATE} = {@Aging Date}and
    [color=darkred]{CLARITY_TDL.DETAIL_TYPE} in [60, 61] and
    {CL_EMP_CLARITY.USER_ID} = CurrentCEUserName
    Moreover when I check Show SQL for the where clause
    CLARITY_TDL"."SERV_AREA_ID" IS NOT NULL AND "CLARITY_TDL"."SERV_AREA_ID"=10 AND "CLARITY_TDL"."POST_DATE">={ts '2010-08-31 00:00:00'} AND "CLARITY_TDL"."POST_DATE"<{ts '2010-09-01 00:00:00'})
    AND ("CLARITY_TDL"."DETAIL_TYPE"=60 OR "CLARITY_TDL"."DETAIL_TYPE"=61) AND "CL_EMP_CLARITY"."USER_ID"=''
    I donu2019t know why the post date is going in between the date/time ranges. I am scrating my head to understand the things to work. Please help me out.

    Not sure what you are trying to do here
    (not isnull({CLARITY_TDL.SERV_AREA_ID}) and {CLARITY_TDL.SERV_AREA_ID}
    in {?Service Area} or 0 in {?Service Area}) and
    (not isnull({CLARITY_DEP.SPECIALTY}) and {CLARITY_DEP.SPECIALTY} in {?Specialty} or {?Specialty} =
    "Specialty(s)" or {?Specialty} = "NONE") and
    (not isnull({CLARITY_TDL.PERFORMING_PROV_ID}) and {CLARITY_TDL.PERFORMING_PROV_ID} in {?Service Provider} or
    {?Service Provider} = "Provider(s)" or {?Service Provider} = "NONE") and
    Probably better to right these on these lines
    (If {?Service Area} not equals 0 then not isnull({CLARITY_TDL.SERV_AREA_ID}) and {CLARITY_TDL.SERV_AREA_ID}
    in {?Service Area}  else true) and
    NB Typed not equals as symbols disappear
    This means nothing in SQL and will cause whole clause to be evaluated locally and not on database
    or {?Specialty} =
    "Specialty(s)" or {?Specialty} = "NONE")
    I am not sure what you are trying to do so can not offer an alternative.

  • Write / store xml data in Xe and retrieve stored data using pl/sql

    Hi to all,
    i'm searching a tutorial on:
    A - how to write / store xml data in Xe and retrieve stored data using pl/sql
    I don't want to use other technologies, because i use htmldb and my best practice is with pl/sql.
    I was reading an ebook (quite old maybe) however it's about oracle 9 and it's talking about xmltype:
    1 - I don't understand if this is a user type (clob/varchar) or it's integrated in Oracle 9 however i will read it (it's chapter 3 titled Using Oracle xmldb).
    Please dont'reply here: i would be glad if someone can suggest me a good tutorial / pdf to achieve task A in Oracle XE.
    Thanx

    Thank you very much Carl,
    However my fault is that i've not tried to create the table via sql plus.
    Infact i was wrong thinking that oracle sql developer allows me to create an xmltype column via the create table tool.
    however with a ddl script like the following the table was created successfully.
    create table example1
    keyvalue varchar2(10) primary key,
    xmlcolumn xmltype
    Thank you very much for your link.

  • Getting Current Date and using it in SQL

    How do you get a current time and store it in a variable..
    I am trying to make an a SQL query using it to search for all previous days appart from today.
    ex:
    currentDate = // store current  date as a ShortDate into a variable
    query = "SELECT * FROM Table WHERE < DATES "+currentDate+" ORDER BY Id"";

    Regarding prepared statement .
    I am trying to insert the date into a variablelike
    below.
    String date = newjava.sql.Date(myDate.getTime());
    I want allow me .... there really has to be a wayto
    get a current System Date within java.That is because you have a lot of errors in that
    line..
    java.sql.Date now = new
    java.sql.Date(System.currentTimeMillis());If you want it as a sql date object (date object in
    sql doesn't have a time field, you need to use
    Timestamp if you want date and time)
    /Kajjava.sql.Date now = new java.sql.Date(new java.util.Date().getTime());
