FCE 3.5 will not reconize my Sony DCR-VX2100, but iMovie will. Any advise will be appreciated. Thanks!

    Tom,
It's a IMA17/1.8G5. Just using the internal hard drive. The camcorder is connected with firewire. Have no clue about the settings on the miniDV tape. Have tried all the varies NTSC settings in East Setup in FCE. Everything works with iMovie. Tell me how you trash the preferences, then I'll reboot. Thanks!

I Cant seem to get Final Cut Express to reconize my camera. I have tried Easy Setup and nothing will reconize my camera. What is wrong?

    Hi(Bonjour!
Do you see your camcorder in System info application in utility folder?
Can you use it into iMovie ?
You have to plug your cam, power it, lauch FCE, set the correct setup in easy setup before capturing.
Give us more details about your computer configurations, Mac OS and quicktime version ?
On what port do you plug your camcorder ? IS there any other device daisychained with it on firewire ?
Is you camcorder is set correctly to output via Firewire port?
See this link about firewire connection:

  • FCE 3.5 sees no audio from an Mbox 2

I'm working with a 1Ghz dual CPU G4 with a fairly recent version of Tiger OSX that has FCE 3.5 and an Mbox 2 audio interface, connected to a powered USB hub.
I don't have the option of connecting the MBox 2 directly. The audio is coming tot he Mbox from a mixer board in the next room via spdif or XLR (can't recall which)
I'd like to use the FCE voice-over feature, but FCE see no signal coming out of the Mbox 2. The funny thing is that
    1) FCE's VO menu lists the Mbox 2 on the list of sources you can select
    2) Pro Tools LE sees the signal just fine on the same machine.
The simple obvious solution is to use PT LE, but I'm trying to make the workflow as easy as possible even though PT is the better tool.
As far as I can tell this G4 has no analog audio input.
How might I most simply and cheaply fix this problem?
Some people have suggested looking for new drivers for the Mbox 2 but I haven't been able to find any.

  • Looping audio after capture

I'm capturing into CS3 premiere pro - Cannon Vixia HV30 and HV40 cameras, HDV 1080i30 (i60) project settings.
When playing the video in the timeline after capture, the audio in many spots loops and repeats on itself.  The raw captured video when played via a media player works fine.  Any suggestions on audio settings or a fix for this problem.  Attached is a screen capture of my project settings.
    Thank you!

  • Shooting in 16:9

Looked all around the net for some discussion on this, but I figured this was the best place to ask.
I was looking through an old course packet from college, and one of the articles inside lists 12 things you should know about DV (such as not to use EP mode, recording color bars, etc.). One of the entries said not to use widescreen/16:9 mode (unless you know what it does), because it's not true widescreen (just a trick), and because you're throwing away a lot of picture resolution to accomplish this "trick."
I use a Sony DCR-VX2100 and have always used 16:9 mode, but should I stop? Is it better to just shoot 4:3 and crop to 16:9?

^^^this is true, But the only thing that it is lacking from true 16:9 cameras are the wider view like the hdr-fx1 wich have black bars at the side that go away wen the 16:9 setting is on. I wouldn't stop recording in widescreen though.

  • Getting the best 24p from de-interlacing 30p

i use a Sony DCR-VX2100 that unfortunately shoots only 30p, what would be the best process either in FCP or Compressor to achieve the 24p (or best 23.98) look that one would get with the Panasonic DVX models? Tinkering using Quicktime conversion yields less than stellar results.
    Any advice is welcomed.
    Thanks.

    OH
    LOOK!!
You don't really want to go to 24fps? Sorry... yeah... film look.
Well -- there's a lot of debate on that out there. Sure Nattress filters are a good place to start off.

  • Prosumer Camcorder Recommendation

I have been using a Sony DCR-VX2100 for five years now, and want to make the jump to HD and also away from Mini DV tapes to avoid capture from tape (and moving parts). The 2100 has been the perfect camcorder for our purposes-capturing summer camp action...some low light campfires, drama productions etc. but also compact enough to take out in the field. Any recommendations for the new camcorder? Canon? Sony? Models? Where to buy? Thanks in advance.

    G_Stray,
I am in exactly the same boat as you are....Been using the vX2000 for years now and it is time to move on......
Looked all over for the "recommended cameras" discussions page without any luck...
I was actually going to ask the same question in this forum as I am editing in FCP and want a camera which is compatible ..... which would in turn make this the proper forum for camera recommendations .....
Really am leaning towards the Sony EX-1 (thus my price range) .
Also looking at the Blackmagic Decklink HD Extreme card. Wondering how many of you have that card.
Want to shoot something that I can play on my 55" Samsung LCD TV...and get my moneys worth out of both a quality camera and my HD LCD TV.

  • Creating timecode on a blank miniDV

I am videotaping a 3-day long event where I will end up with about 9 miniDVs filled with footage. I will then capture that footage onto my Mac G5's FCP HD. I remember in one of my film classes that you're supposed to create timecode on the miniDV tapes before videotaping by recording over the entire tape, but this lesson is vague in my memory. Could anyone re-explain this to me and tell me exactly how I am supposed to do it? I'll be videotaping with a Sony DCR-VX2100 but have access to a Canon Elura 60. Thanks to anyone who can help.

I am with Randy. I have never ever heard of blacking a tape for shooting before DV came along. And then it was something that people thought would help with broken timecode issues. It doesn't. What causes a broken code is when you shoot, then review your footage and then don't press stop before the camera cuts to static...then the code starts over.
Actually, I guess it helps in this manner, prevents timecode from resetting to 00:00:00...which is a hassle. But it won't prevent a Timecode break. For when you shoot, it is performing an Assemble edit, much like if you record over a VHS tape in your VCR. When you press stop, the part of the tape after you stopped still incurs a TC break.
All blacking a tape does is introduce wear and tear, and increase the chances of dropout occurances. Don't do it...tell others about this myth. Do what Randy said and give yourself plenty of Post roll.

  • Progressive scanning and Field Dominence questions

Beginning questions. I will be making simple video movies mostly for viewing on Macbook Pro, maybe on TV, but unlikely.
I have some settings questions. I will shoot with miniDV Sony DCR-VX2100, 16 bit, 48 khz, NTSC.
The camera has a setting: Progressive On/Off (normal). The (rather confusing) manual suggests Progressive for more stable stills, otherwise use normal for moving images.
Should I use Progressive Off? And what setting for Field Dominance, in FCE?
Hope that I have provided enough info.
    Thanks,
    Sonny

Should I use Progressive Off? And what setting for Field Dominance, in FCE?
For regular shooting I'd leave it off. A fast shutter and good lighting will give pretty good stills in off mode.
If you need (rarely) rock solid stills then switch it on if you like.
Lower field dominance for DV. When you select the correct Easy Setup in FCE all the leg work is done.
You should use Easy Setup>DV-NTSC. Set this and Save before capturing to your Sequence.

  • Camcorder Question/ Final Cut Express 2

    Hello All,
I am looking to buy a new camcorder as my old one (Sony DCR-PC100e) has died on me. Am thinking of the Canon. Like the look of the XM2 but notice that on this board a lot of people talking about the HV20 and HV30.
I need mini-DV, am not bothered about HD necessarily cos I don't have an HD tv or anything else that's HD. Obviously am using a Mac, and need it to be compatible with Final Cut Express ( iahve version 2.0.3...old, I know, but suits me fine for now).
Any strong opinions on which one of these is better? XM2 or HV30.
The semi-pro version that Sony has, the DCR-VX2100-E is way too expensive....looks like the Canon XM2 is around £1500 or so?
    Would appreciate any feedback, Thanks.

I have got the HV20 but cannot comment in depth on how good it is as I have only shot about 5 minutes of footage!
However, it received excellent reviews last year and is available for well under £600 new.
There are some 10 huge web pages to this review but they are worth wading through. The other reviews are shorter:-

  • DVCAM Settings

    Hello everyone,
I have a probably very simple problem. I have about 30 DV tapes recorded on TDK tapes. I believe they were recorded in DVCAM. The strange thing is that each tape has a very odd timecode. Instead of starting at 00:00:00:00 or 01:00:00:00, they are more similar to 11:48:46:00. Each tape has a unique beginning timecode unlike the other. To my knowledge the tapes were shot on Sony camcorders, possibly Sony DCR-VX2100's.
What is troubling me is that when I use my Sony DSR-11 to capture them to Final Cut Pro 6, they capture fine, but each tape has several timecode breaks. The Log & Capture is able to find the breaks and recover, but I end up with 15-20 individual clips rather than one long one.
Right now I am using the DV-NTSC setting in Final Cut to capture and it does capture, but gives me several breaks in every clip. Is there a better setting for me to use or am I stuck with these odd time codes?
Thanks in advance for the help.
    -Brian

I checked with my client as to what cameras were used. They were Sony DCR-VX2100's. They were set to use Free-Run timecode so even after the camera was stopped, it kept the timecode running. This screwed up everything on the tape.
So I am just stuck to letting Final Cut split the clips.
    Thanks for the help!

  • 16x9 Workflow

Hey everyone, I have a quick workflow question that I'm sure somebody can answer simply for me. I am an audio engineer mostly, so some of the basic video stuff eludes me I know enough to get by with the basics, but we just recently started working in 16x9, and we are a little confused at times.
Can someone, in simple terms explain to me the settings for very basic 16x9 workflow, including capture settings, sequence settings, and output settings? Say for instance I shoot with a Sony DCR-VX2100 set to 16x9. What would be the most basic, trouble free way to capture, set my sequence up, and output to 16x9.
Thank you so, so, so very much to anyone that can chime in on this.

Choose the DV/NTSC Easy Setup that says ANAMORPHIC. FILE>EASY SETUP.
    Done.

  • Re-Changing DVD Regionalcode

I´m trying to re-chance my regionalcode for DVDs. It sais it can be changed one more time. But everytime i click change, DVD-Player exits without any message. What can I do to re-change the code?

    Hi Pui,
I am beginner in this, but might be able to help. I have the Sony DCR-VX2100, which I think is very similar, and have been ploughing through the manual. I just set mine to 16 bits/48 khz.
    Try this:
    Turn on camera.
Open the LCD display, or, look through the view finder.
Push in the menu wheel in
Scroll the wheel down to "CM SEARCH" (the CM icon)
    Push wheel in
    Scroll to AUDIO MODE
    Choose 16.
Hope that this is close enough on your recorder.

I need to find out how to change the position of the view or camera. I need to translate my position about 5 meters higher to I am. As I can see underneath chairs rather than looking down on top of them.
Anybody have any idea? Please help!!!
