Debug information "Unknown Source" on Tomcat 6 server log

I install a Tomcat 6. When I run my application, the runtime exceptions debug on Tomcat server log did show any line number. It make me difficult to find the bug.
Can anyone tell me why the exception debug info don't show line number instead od "Unknown Source" when I use Tomcat 6? The debug information like:
java.lang.NullPointerException
at com.xxx.xxx.MailServlet.process(Unknown Source)
at com.xxx.xxx.MailServlet..doPost(Unknown Source)
at org.apache.catalina.xxxxxx
Actully it is common runtime error. Do I need confiugrate Tomcat 6 for that and I can see the excat line number?

key being to turn debug="true" on (javac -g ?) when you are compiling

  • Obtain source IPs in Web Server logs

    Hi,
We have inherited a site which is running SAM 6.3 Q1. Access to SAM is always through a VIP which uses a NAT pool. There is a specific technical reason for this but since we don't own the network it is not a discussion I want to get into yet.
So, no matter which client originates a request we cannot see the source IP as it is NAT'ed to one of a small range of IP addresses, while passing through the VIP. Since the Policy Agents always use the same URL we are unable to determine which requests originate from which clients.
Any way to increase logging in the Web Servers in order to obtain source IP addresses or something similar?
    Thanks,

When I try to run the RMI server code, after I have granted all permissions in my policy, after compiling through RMIC generating my stub and skeleton classes, and finally after running the RMI registry, I receive an error. • Java debug information

    hy,
I was wondering, is it possible to let an Xlet log java output (debug information) and send it to a server on the set top box. These logging information should give information about all the applications running on the stb.
This in order to help debug problems on commercial STB without debug output and without the need to implement special functionality in all the applications.
Can someone point me out some resources? (I am a beginning java developer, so I think this is rather a java issue than an MHP or javaTV issue)
    Thanks

I've used a couple of development boxes and have found that writing to standard out, via calls to System.out.println() works well. There is probably a serial port on your debug box that you can connect up to a PC to read the the debug output.
If you want to know what applications can be run on the STB then you'll need to write a bit of code to query the org.dvb.application.AppsDatabase. getAppIDs() will return an enumeration org.dvb.application.AppID objects each of which can be looked up in the database to give you more information about the application in question

    Hi
first run "ipconfig /flushdns" and then "ipconfig /registerdns" finally restart dns service and check the situation, also you can check dns logs computer management ->Event viewer->Custom Views->Server roles->DNS.

  • Exception... (Unknown Source)

    Greetings,
I would like to know why is that when I got an exception, in the trace description output, sometimes it outputs the Unknown Source text where it should appears the java source class and line number!? But the strange here, is that it only happens in my own classes. So, what I must do to my code could also be traced?
For example, the code below, my classes are the ones inside the package PT:
    java.lang.NullPointerException
            at PT.ptinovacao.locawa.servlet.LocationFinder.convertSOAPBodyToDOM(Unknown Source)
            at PT.ptinovacao.locawa.servlet.LocationFinder.onMessage(Unknown Source)
            at javax.xml.messaging.JAXMServlet.doPost(Unknown Source)
            at javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet.service(HttpServlet.java:760)
            at javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet.service(HttpServlet.java:853)
    ...thanks,
    Pedro Salazar.

Compile with the debug flag on. -g for javac. For ant
add the attribute debug="true" to the javac task.Yes, I did that. Also, I put the debuglevel to "source". And it stills not printing the source class and line number!
For more information, I'm using remote debug (jdb) which I attach to a tomcat server.
BTW, I'm wondering about that command "use", shouldn't I use it to specify my sources? I tried but it didn't worked... (don't know if I use it well).
    thanks,
    Pedro Salazar.

    Hi Amit,
For starters, you are using an old version (1.0.2.2.1) of OC4J.
You can download newer versions from this web page:
    http://technet.oracle.com/tech/java/oc4j/content.html
That page also has links to documentation, "how-to" documents and
sample code. Note that you also need to use compatible versions
    of java.
Personally, I am using OC4J version 9.0.2.0.0 on SUN Solaris 7
with JDK 1.3.1 (also from SUN).
Also, (and if you don't already know about them) the following web
sites may also be useful to you:
    http://www.orionserver.com
    http://www.orionsupport.com
    http://www.atlassian.com
    http://www.elephantwalker.com
    Good Luck,
    Avi.

    Sorry Amit,
I have absolutely no idea. However, have you tried these other two
    forums:
Technologies > Java > Java Server Pages (JSP)
    http://forums.oracle.com/forums/forum.jsp?id=399160
Technologies > Other > Sample Code

    Hope it helps.
    Good Luck,
    Avi.

  • Exception with (Unknown Source), possible to specify source file?

Hi, I'm getting exceptions of the kind

Tomcat console does not show me the source line number of the exception. Is the re any way to link the WAR file to the actual source code?

  • URGENT URGENT: MySQL unknown source error

    Hi, need ur help again.
I have a web application that uses mysql 4.1.1 as database and tomcat 4.1.29. This application connects to 5 databases.
First database is main database for application.
Second database is used to retrieve records for report generation only.
Third and forth database do the same as second database.
Fifth database uses for authentication, which is in different machine.
NOTE that 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th database are on same machine.
All the database connection work fine (can make connection and retrieve records) in windows platform (where the tomcat and database server are installed in window).
However, when i test the application in linux platform (where the tomcat and database server are installed in linux), the connection to 2nd,3rd and 4th database fail. The log files shows that there are error known as 'Unknown source'.
    What can i do?

    Ok, i found the problem.
There is a case-sensitve issue: the table name.
    thanks.

  • Why am I getting (Unknown Source) instead of a line number?

In the past couple of weeks, using Tomcat with a Servlet/java bean app, I've started getting exceptions listing such as this:
    Exception in: R( /webman + /servlet/CreateJobServlet + null) - java.lang.NullPointerException
    at CreateJobServlet.service(Unknown Source)
    at javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet.service(HttpServlet.java:853)
    at org.apache.tomcat.core.ServletWrapper.doService(ServletWrapper.java:404)
    at org.apache.tomcat.core.Handler.service(Handler.java:286)
The thing that bothers me is the "(Unknown Source)" bit. I no longer get the line numbers where the error occured on any of my source files, whereas I'm sure I DID get line numbers a few weeks ago. I thought it might have to do with my changing to JDK1.4, but after changing back to 1.3, the problem persists. Why are the line numbers no longer available, and what can I do to fix it? I've always accepted the frustration of getting NullPointerExceptions in JSP pages, but I don't want to be forced to put lots of System.outs in to help me track down the problems in compiled files!!

It could be one of the following:
    - you have not specified -g on compile
(means debug info, check IDE or ANT task if you dont
    use command line)
    - you have specified -O on compile
(means optimize, which could hinder debug infos)
    bottom line:
you should have debuginfos on and optimze off during
compile. Most IDEs have debug info default-on during
compile, when using ANT most people forget to define
    the debug=on
    <javac srcdir="${src}"
    destdir="${build}"
    classpath="xyz.jar"
    debug="on"
    />
    Hope this helps

    Gerry,
Its difficult to say much without more information,  but when I have encountered this problem while debugging a dll, the program flow halts at the function returning the error.  Default behavior in CVI 2010 environment I believe is to break on library errors.  This can be verified/set in the Run->Break on->Library errors menu setting.  Also important, both the calling application AND the .dll must have been built in debug mode.  If that is true, and the "break on Library errors" mode is checked, when the program is executed, program flow will halt at the first occurrence of a library error, with a description in the Run-Time Errors box.  If the error is thrown within the .dll, then you will see execution stop there.
Once this happens, you can right click on the offending function to open the function panel, and use the built in help to determine what -12 means.
If you need further help, please provide more information about the problem
    Regard,
    Ryk

  • JDK1.5.0_12 crash when I try to startup a tomcat app server with it.

    Hi,
I am support a Blackboard application running on a PrimePower box.
Recently I installed JDK1.5.0_12 on the box. When I re-configured Blackboard to use the new JDK and tried to restart the server, the tomcat portion will keep getting the JVM Hotspot crash error as illustrated below.
The startup is invoked from a shell script that starts the web server as well as the tomcat (app) server. As long as the root partition has enough diskspace, the script will try to "start" the tomcat server.
The JVM will keep throwing core dumps and issuing messages like the following, with each core dump taking about 100 to 150MB in space from the root partition.
Only when there isn't enough space in the root partition for another core dump, did I notice that it stopped.
My sys admin has since cleaned up the dump files and I have reverted back to the earlier minor release of JDK1.5.0.
I have used ldd -r libjvm.so and the command could return me the list of libraries that the libjvm.so depends on (not a problem with the loading of the dynamic libraries and such).
I have submitted the JVM crash report. But no one has gotten back to me.
Has anyone encountered the same problems / have any suggestions on what could be cause and how to resolved this?
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Hon Peng.

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I have tried this on another machine running the same version of Blackboard. It works fine.
Only difference is that the machine that has the JVM crash is running on Fujitsu PrimePower and the OS is Solaris 9 (but twigged for PrimePower).
The one where it runs and starts up successfully is running on SunFire (OS is Solaris 10).
I am wondering if there is a problem with the JVM loading required libraries because of the OS being different versions.
Any leads on this is welcomed. Thank you.
