Debugging a slow firefox

Lately I have noticed my web connection is really slow. I always use firefox and had assumed the problem to be with my router or ISP.
However I just started doing some stuff in parallels, and realised the response of the firefox browser from within windows is much faster. Then i tried safari and the same story - a much faster response.
I can even curl a URL from the terminal and get the response back much faster than firefox running on OSX.
I guess I should be asking this question on some firefox forum, but I want to get some tips from OSX users about how to debug this issue - how can I go about finding where the time is going when I request a page with firefox? can I see the traffic going out of the network connection?
It just feels as if there's a massive lag when firefox is first asked for a URL... as though it's having to ask permission for something from the OS. It seems to get quicker once a page has come back....
I have all my plug-ins disabled.
Any thoughts / advice appreciated.

I have noticed an additional problem.
Firefox hangs all the time, usually after I've been using it for about 20 minutes. I have to continually force quit and reboot the darn thing. When I use the restore function, it usually returns me to a page that's 2 or 3 pages prior to the last one I was using.
I didn't have this problem with Firefox previously but since I updated to 2.0.0.14, this problem never stops occurring. Anyone know where the conflict is? It's getting very annoying. I like the way FF handles several things better than Safari but I am almost ready to switch to a new browser (I'm open to suggestions there too. I don't really like Safari a whole lot).

  • Videos played via internet are so slow and choppy, SLOW Firefox

Was wondering if anyone knew for sure the reason why videos/movie trailers played thru either Safari or Firefox are extremely slow and choppy on my G5 imac or G4 iBook laptop. Not sure if the outdated processors cant handle the flash embedded videos Youtube, Quicktime and other sites post, but it is really annoying not to be able to watch anything smoothly. Even if i let the entire video load (if it is a quicktime), then play it, it still is very choppy. The audio plays fine, but the video never keeps up. I have a 6mb DSL connection, so that cant be the problem. Any video I play via my iPod Touch (aside from flash videos it cant play) they are as smooth as can be (And that is via a wireless connection). Which makes me think it is a processor issue. Any thoughts?
Anyone have any suggestions on how I can remedy this situation? (aside from buying a new computer...)
PLUS, does anyone notice how slow Firefox is, or is it just me? Seems like even when i type in this form field, time lags as the letters show up. I have the latest version, and it is so slow. Switching tabs takes time... Reading and accessing RSS fields in the Feed Sidebar plug in is really slow...
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

QuickTime is designed to "drop" frames during playback when the machine can't keep up with the video data rate (audio continues normally). This may appear as a "stutter" during playback on an older machine.
It's not based on the Internet connection speed.
Apple movie trailers use the newer (2005) H.264 video codec and they demand a high CPU (Intel is best). You should get better performance on your G5 than on the G4.
Videos encoded using Flash will be equally difficult to view on older machines

golden grape - Welcome to the discussions!
DNS problems are very irritating - and some of the hardest to figure out.
Let's start gathering some information to see how things are set up. Open the Network Utility and go to the "Lookup" tab. Pick one or two addresses and look them up. How long does the server report it took to do the lookup (query time). How long did you wait from clicking go?
P.S. sometimes the best thing is to ignore these things for an hour or so - it's often a temporary thing while your DNS server works out the addresses you need. Also - mac OS will cache the addresses - so once you have them - you don't need to wait anymore on DNS to find things. Try to leave your mac on as long as possible - unless you have some bad software or corruption on a disk - the longer it runs, the faster things will get.

7ms! Your DNS server is a lot faster than mine.
I can confidently say that you don't have DNS problems. If you had DNS problems - firefox and Network Utility should be equally slow. This really has nothing to do with mini hardware either.
It would be best to ask a new question titled "Safari slow - FireFox fast" in the Safari group. I'm sure a lot of people there will have good ideas to find out what causes safari to go slow when firefox can browse the same site with speed.
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=169
One things I can suggest is:
    * Temporarily change your Safari preferences to open the bookmarks or a blank page. You will know if safari is waiting on something locally or the web page is drawing slowly. I doubt this is it - but you never know until you try to narrow down what exactly is slow.

I am using school's network now.
Does the same thing happen if you connect to the internet through 'normal' means, such as a home internet connection (broadband, dialup etc), or does it just happen at school?

  • Hi! I downloaded a plug-in that slowed Firefox, even after I removed it. I reset Firefox, during reset my computer went black. Now it won't open. Help!

I downloaded a plug-in (add-on) from Facebook onto my toolbar and it made my entire computer run slowly. I disabled the add-on, removed the toolbar, and everything was still super slow. I went to troubleshooting and hit reset firefox. It was in the process of resetting and my screen went black. I thought it was just the screensaver but after pressing the space bar, screen did not return. I did a hard exit on my Mac and restarted my computer. On my desktop there is now a folder that says "Old Firefox Data". When I try to open firefox I get a message that says "your firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible. I've tried to reinstall firefox as well, only to have the same result. Help!

Do you have JSON backups that Firefox keeps in the bookmarkbackups folder?
If you use the Time Machine then you can try to restore the places.sqlite file.

  • What is the reason for a slow Firefox on a new powerful laptop? (with no other programs running and with no infection of viruses or adwares)

With about 1500 bookmarks and just 4 active Firefox extensions on my new laptop (Dell XPS L502, Core i7, 6GB of RAM, Win7 64-bit Ultimate) my Firefox boots up and works real slow. by slow I mean it boots up in 15 seconds; and with 3 tabs open when I switch tabs, it takes 5 seconds to switch to the new tab some of the times!). Internet Explorer and Chrome work much faster and I think this is not normal for Firefox. what can be the problem?
Can this be because of my VGA card? my system has 2 VGA's; the 2GB GT540M Nvidia graphic card which is not active by default for Firefox and an Intel on-board VGA which is working by default for normal usages like browsing.
I do not think this is a virus or anything, I have Updated malware and virus protection; and my RAM and CPU are not more than 25% loaded when running Firefox.

  • Very Slow Firefox

Hi! I have recently been experiencing problems with Firefox - new tabs take ages to appear, navigating through tabs is a drag, videos do not play properly, typing is very slow, the thinking ball appears randomly etc. By now I am quite frustrated, especially since deleting cache and cookies twice, or restarting my Mac twice did not seem to help. Performance improves for a bit, but then is back to its slow self. I ran EtreCheck (output below), but do not know how to decrease its process memory usage (if that is the problem). Finally, this has never happenned before.

Hold down the Option (alt) key when opening FF.
You should also get rid of the steam clean thing. Those cleaning programs, if that's what this thing is, are dangerous and not needed.

  • Flash player terminal server Nomachine very slow firefox 3.0.3

    Hello all,
I have a serious problem which i cannot reolve by myself.
When using firefox 3.0.3 and flash 9.0.124 and 10 in a
terminal server environment with bandwidth limit to 320k firefox is
slowing down because of the limit in bandwidth.
The terminal server software caps the bandwidth usage because
we run an controlled internet environment for our business safety
and there are more then 3000 users logged in so the bandwith should
    be capped for performance reasons.
When i play a flash movie from youtube or visiting sites like
    http://www.derbauer.de then the
terminal server software just tels the software that it cannot
process that much bandwidth so the application slows down.
Now i have off course multiple options:
1 disabling flash (not very nice to users)
2 raise the limit (less users in our environment or more
    costs for extra hardware)
3 asking Nomachine to drop frames are do something fancy with
    it.
4 make an option in the flash plugin to say play this video
with only 1 frame per second
The last isn't very nice for people either but flash
applications still work only viewing flash video's is not as good
    as people want.
What are your thoughts on this?
    With kind regards
    William van de Velde

  • How do I fix a very slow Firefox browser often resulting in "Server Not Found"?

The browser is super slow, saying 'problem loading page' and ends up showing the 'Server not found' message. Eventually I'm able to access a website after highlighting the website address and hitting enter, maybe several times. My computer is new and have made minimal changes until this problem is resolved. Problem affects e-mail, too.

    I think this is not a Firefox's bug/error.
This is I think generated from the back-end SQL syntax of the site, which means the site created this error message, not Firefox.
You may contact the site-owner and tell them about this error message, so they may know & fix this error.

  • Slow Firefox tried everything including reinstall. Slow in Safari too.

For 24 hours Firefox has been really slow to load. This is on my computer only - browsing on my ipad is fast and good. I tried the same on my computer with another browser and it is equally slow. I have tried all the suggestions including reinstalling Firefox but unfortunately the problem remains. Do you think it could be a hardware problem in which case any solutions? I have tried disk utility too a few times and all my other programmes are working as normal.

You can reset user set (bold) network.http.* prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page via the right-click context menu to the default value.

  • Slow firefox after update 3.6.11

hi.after 3.6.11 update my firefox is very slow when opens websites. My connection is ok.I have try in chrome and ie and all sites open quick.any ideas?

I think his was not a Firefox update you downloaded, but a piece of malicious software you have inadvertently downloaded from a site called http://ffftp.co.cc/ which is impersonating Firefox.
I discovered this myself when my Zonealarm firewall requested permission for "Golds" to access the internet. Golds??!! However I couldn't find a file with this name installed on my computer.
You should delete the file you downloaded and certainly do not allow internet access to any suspicious program. You should also scan your PC immediately for any virus, malware, etc.
    Best of luck.

  • I have a several issues, which may be related, concerning slow Firefox startup, bookmarks, and display

Last weekend, I needed to go back to a restore point on my Windows 7 PC. Since then, I have had a number of issues. I'll outline them as best I can. I am using Firefox 23.0.1
    1) When I click the tray or desktop icons, it takes between 1 and 5 minutes for Firefox to load (in fact, this is true for Thunderbird as well, but not other programs, as I can tell).
    2) When Firefox starts, it is what I would call the bare bones display, not the usual for this version. In addition, my bookmarks aren't loaded. However, I can find the places.sqlite file
    3) Related to 2, and I think a big part of my problem, is that there are 2 (seemingly) complete profiles, both designated as default. I have tried to rename each one as not being the default, and that hasn't worked. One is an older one, and the other from Sunday when I restored.
I have not uninstalled and reinstalled, because it seems the problem is deeper than that (as I wrote above). I have also not reset, for the same reason. I don't think it's related to add-ons and extensions, as I have disabled all and nothing seems changed (slow start, display, etc)
I'm open to all thoughts and suggestions, and thanks in advance...

Note that if there is a problem with the profiles.ini that Firefox will create a new default profile.
What matters is whether all profiles present in the Firefox\profiles folder appear in the profiles.ini file and that the currently selected c profile is marked with Default=1
If a new (xxxxxxxxx.default) profile has been created then you can restore the previous profile by editing the path in the profiles.ini file to point to your previous profile.
You can also choose to stay with the new profile and transfer some personal data (files) from the old profile, see:

The flash plugin is crashing after about fifteen seconds when I'm triggering a break point in Firefox. I tried debugging in Safari and I didn't experience this problem. There wasn't anything helpful listed in the Mozilla database, so I thought I'd check here to see if anyone has any information or tips regarding this problem.

  • Driector 10.1 Mac: trace & debug VERY slow

I am tracing and debugging a lingo script, with various
variables etc, totalling around 2 MB of data.
Breakpoints, debugging, stepping through scripts, etc, is
VERY VERY slow. Up to 20-40 second wait per step or breakpoint (I
guess for vars to format in the debugger window).
Is Dir 11 any faster? I've been looking for a Real reason to
    upgrade...
    Thanks
    William

    1) I've had no problems with data or code for a couple of
years now. I upgraded to v10.1 a year ago. I had to because v9 did
    not work in OSX 10.4.x
    2) This error in the data is of some new type. So my code is
not handling the weird data correctly. Tracing is the best way, but
    way too slow.
I have now isolated the problem; it was due to a new version
of Filemaker Pro inserted a new "special" char in some fields. My
code has been corrected now and runs fine in Dir 10.1.
In Dir 11.0 there are HUNDREDS of new errors in all our Dir
    programs and projects.
And Dir 11 is Fantastically SLOW ! Slloooooooow!
Stupid Dir 11 - there's NO way I'm wasting time changing MANY
programs and projects just to do Arrogant Adobe's work for them.
Idiots. Didn't they test this stuff? How can they sell this carp?
    3) I have Javascript that already handles 3 times this much
data, but the date is organized first into packets.
    4) Yes, we will eventually have to rewrite all 3,000 lines of
code. And not just in this program, but in 4-5 other programs as
    well.
We originally wrote these in Director due to the debugger and
the fact that I am an expert in Lingo for over ten years.
We'll stick with Dir 10.1 for a year or two, even if we have
to use an old Mac that's never updated or whatever.
Eventually, we'll have to ditch Adobe Director. Thank god we
never really buried ourselves in that other Macromedia MESS, Flash.
Macromedia & Adobe NEVER had any "authoring language"
programmers with any real "long term, coherent" design skill, they
are just hacky hacky hackers, forever adding new features with no
concept of any users but themselves.
    What a mess.
(Oh, and Batch processing in Photoshop is a laughable mess as
    well. Jeez.)
