Debugging Tool for JSP

Is there any debugging tool for JSP, which point out the line number where the error is. currently I am using notepad for JSP coding. It takes too much time for error finding.

You can use WebSphere Studio Application developer, which would probably be over kill if you are just doing JSPs because it does so much more. You may want to look at its open source verison eclipse at eclipse.org.

Can you introduce an IDE debug tool for me?

I will debug my project under Solaris OS, my project is a big one. I debuged it with DDD (Data Display Debugger) under Linux. I want to know are there an IDE debug tool under Solaris 8? Like the DDD under Linux.

Just to add a little to Maxim's reply.
DDD can also be built on Solaris 8 without any trouble.
If you are using the GCC toolchain, then you may also consider using the Sun Studio 12 IDE. The compilers (cc and CC) aren't supported on Solaris 8, but the Java based IDE should work.

Front End Tool for JSP

I'm trying to develop a commerically viable front-end to an existing JSP system.Are there any tools available that make the task of creating a front end(i.e. HTML,XML) easier.
For example, nice headers/tabs at the top of each page while keeping usability at a premuim??

That's a difficult question to answer off the top of my head.
Are you looking for some software that allows you to import a JSP based application into it, with the intention of modifying those so they look nicer?
Or are you looking for a tool that will let you build nice looking pages then spit those out as JSPs or XMLs?
Either way, my reply would be NO? The userbility aspects are things your organisation has to invest time in (designers, PR folks, communications, page developers, info architects, etc). Translating those thoughts into hard pages is where the HTML layer comes in, and there are no tools out there that can bring usability into web pages.
You see what I mean?
However, if what you are asking for is the availability of tools or editors to help you create the HTML you put in JSP files, then you are only one step away from your answer. Hi,
Log Watch is basically a tool which helps you to analyze the trace or logs generated for running an application. You can use the tool by running the application com.sap.tcepcommon~logWatch , but you must have the administrator role assigned to your user id. There are also three tool which helps while troubleshooting any problem in Portal. They are Navigation Reporter, Navigation Debugger, Diagnostic Tool.

We suspect it to be a memory leak issue. Are there memory leak debugging tools for sol10.
we were unable to use dbx as we got the following error.
(dbx) check -memuse
dbx: Incompatible libthread.so/libthread_db.so found. Error checking disabled
See `help rtc mt' for details.
Also dbx's 'check -access' option is not supported for X86.
Waiting eagerly for any support/guidance.

I had the same problem on Solaris 10 sparc. The problem seems to relate to symbolic links with
long names not being extracted correctly from the tar file (resulting in @LongLink files popping
up around the place). If you use the .zip source file then the build goes fine.

Debug tool

Is there any debug tool for Edge?
Yesterday I spent 1 h to find a misspelled function call. The error I got from Chrome console was not helping at all.
A simple message like "undefined xxx on line x" would have helped a lot. In Chrome you get just "error" and a link to a totally unreadable code block.

There's a very simple syntax checker, but it will not find a miscalled function. Your best bet is to use one of the web consoles, which may throw an error if you call a function that doesn't exist.

JSP debugging plugin for eclipse 3.2

I was looking for a plugin for eclipse 3.2 which can be used for JSP debugging purpose(not myeclipse).
If any thing of such sort exists?

Should be something like
- extract the plugin into the plugins directory
- restart eclipse
- create a clean project (to prevent artefacts)
- rightclick the project, select from the menu team->share project
- choose the VSS option and point it to your VSS server
- team->update
- team -> check out on the file you need to change
- team -> check in after modification

Philisophical Question: Tools for synchronizing JSPs, Java Beans and XML?

This is a "best practices" question...
The JSTL and JSF tags provide a lot of support for minimizing the amount of text that must be included in a JSP page. For example:
<c:out value="${customer.firstName}"/>This snippet will find an object named "customer" in any of the JSP scopes, extract the value of the property named "firstName", and output it as part of the page.
Here are my questions:
(1) Is there a recommended method to communicate to the page designer what objects are in scope for a particular page, and what the properties of those objects are?
(2) Is there any programmatic way to determine from the program's source code that an object with the specified name and of the expected type will be in scope at run time?
I would love to have an IDE that would be able to help the page designer by providing a list of the objects that are expected to be in scope, along with the name of their properties. What conventions exist to make this possible?

Debugging for JSP

I do a remote debugging for my j2ee application.
i want to do debugging for JSP ....like breakpoint etc etc
can you tell any such options available which would be compatible with eclipse .
my server is weblogic.
i heard lomboz is a plugin which does that kind of work.
but when i visited lomboz site ...dont see any such capability of jsp debugging .
does it really work ?

I have downloaded OEPE for Eclipse Galileo and I am able to keep break points in the jsp. when ever it comes to that line it says attach source which i don't have as it is looking for a .class file. Or if I have made changes to an existing jsp after the server is started, it says jsp is out of sync. :( every time i make changes to a jsp I have to restart the server which takes 30 minutes. I want to do hot code replacement like how its done for java for jsps and xmls. We are using struts and weblogic 9.2 MP3.Please help.

Thanks for ur response. I am able to keep break points etc in my jsp but i am not able to watch or inspect any java variable. I have also tried the keep generated and attached the generated code under admin server, tried attaching the web content alone in the add source, no use .. can you tell me what cold be the issue? atleast i am prepared to copy paste my jsp anywhere so that the change is reflected. every time i make changes I need to take a build deploy it which is very irritating.
Another major major issue I face is if i land in a java file which i havent landed before or made changes, I need to give a space and save or else it is not staying n the break points which is given. this makes this plugin all the more annoying. The Galileo which i downloaded is the one released from eclise and not any of the previous versions.
I am thinkin of movin out of oepe. before I was using com.bea.weblogic.eclipse_1.1.1 a plugin i fond some where and thats better. only issue i face is out of sync wfor which i need to restart the server.
am I missing something? I downloaded the eclipse 5.0, i downloaded oepe-previewgalileo-11.1.1.1.1.200904131351 as it is from the server provider itself I installed oepe-previewgalileo-11.1.1.1.1.200904131351 successfully and i have so many issues?

JVM Debug Tool

I am new to Java......I need help ...
Is there any way that we can see whihc all Clasess / Objects are occupying JVM ? Is there any command line tool .....
If yes please let me know because i am in big trouble ...
I am running 4 JVM instances ... on server i am having .... huge JSP/Sevlets ..... after start the JVM around one hour or so if i see JVM memory Size and Physical memory it is just goes decreasing and it result to crash JVM .....
Same thing creates problem to my Sun - System it is goes occupying SWAP area more more .... and result is Core Dump file ..... so i want to know ... why JVM is using so much memory .. please let me know .....
I tryed with Hprof utility too ..but it is really difficult to understand ... so please help me

I dont think that any console tools can help you in this matter. There are certain utility tools for windows platforms that can help you to find out
1. Which classes occupy the memory
2. Where does the processor spend most of its time
For example nro. 1 tools are like OptimizeIT and JProbe. With JProbe you can also take care of the nro. 2 type of debugging. Perhaps with optimizeit too.
Dont know though if they provide them for solaris too. could think so because they are all-java programs. Check them out.

I found the tool is good atleast it gives me session and context attributes. But I need the complete request lifecycle.. Am I asking more ..:)
