Default apache log rotation

Hello,
I have leopard server, and want to know where is the apache log rotation is configured. I did not configure anything in the per-site log rotation in server admin, but the server is rotating the log anyway.
Thanks

Well, I just saw that there is an /etc/newsyslog.conf setting, but have not worked with it myself. man newsyslog.conf provides more info.

    http://edocs.bea.com/wls/docs100/server_start/winservice.html#wp1193277
    my installsvc.cmd contains:
    set ROTATION_TYPE = TIME
    set TIME_START_DATE = Jun 12 2008 15:07:00
    set TIME_INTERVAL_MINS = 3
    set STD_LOG=C:\logs\stdout.log
    beasvc.exe -install.... -log:"%STD_LOG%"
This is the sniplet from the stdout.log:
[Thu Jun 12 15:45:09 2008] [initLog] initializing logger
[Thu Jun 12 15:45:09 2008] [E] [initLog] No 'ROTATION_TYPE' header found. 'TIME' based rotation will be used by default.

[Thu Jun 12 15:45:09 2008] [E] [initLog] No 'TIME_INTERVAL_MINS' header found. Using the default value of 24 hours.

the service then starts ok and works with default settings, but that's not what I'm looking for...
    any ideas are welcome ;)
    thanks!

yes, the parameters are set when service is being installed. Also, I can see in the log when changes are made to the parameters and service reinstalled.

  • Apache log rotation

From the documentation here: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/adobemediaserver/configadmin/WS5b3ccc516d4fbf351e63e3d119f2926 0bd-7ffa.2.3.html is is stated that " Adobe Media Server handles log rotation for the Apache logs." However, it appears not to be the case.
My logs in /opt/adobe/ams/Apache/logs are not rotating.
Can you help with this? Does AMS handle this or will I need to manually logrotate?
    Regards,
    A

    So this isn't working?:
    1. "One option is to rotate log files, moving or deleting the oldest files."
I usually rename the old log files whenever/before the server needs to be restarted and that forces the server to generate new log files.
    2. "Use the rotation element in the Logger.xml file to specify a rotation schedule for log files. Two types of rotation schedules can be established. The first option is to set a daily rotation at a certain time. For example, setting daily at 00:00 rotates files every 24 hours at midnight. Alternatively, set a rotation that occurs when the log exceeds a specified length. Name, maximum file size in kilobytes, and maximum number of log files to keep can also be customized using the
rotation element. For an example, see the Logger.xml file installed in the /conf directory."
Did you modify the Logger.xml file to change the log rotation time? Save a copy of the original file before you modify it.
    3. You can also try to use a third party module (this might/might not work for you depending on your system specs): http://www.sitebuddy.com/mod_log_rotate
mod_log_rotate.so seems pretty simple to set-up and implement.

  • .default files and Apache logs in 10g AS(10.1.2.3)

    Hi Friends,
I am using Oracle 10g AS (10.1.2.3) and i have some .default files in my Middle Tier and Infra home like
    httpd.conf.default , access.conf.default.....
Is it safe to remove these files?
Will these files cause any Vulnerability issue on my server?
Also will Apache Log files cause Vulnerability issue on my server?
    Please clarify
    Regards,
    DB

Default files are there as a backup for those files. If you happen to modify your files without saving a copy then this would take you back to how a typical httpd.conf (for instance, or plsql.conf or sso.properties, etc) would look like.
I do not think they are any greater source of vulnerability than any other backup files you have on your server. I do not delete them either and wouldn't from any of the servers that I administer.
    thanks,

  • Extended format of access.log and log rotation

I am using WebLogic Server 6.1sp1. I want to use extended format of web
server access log. I also want to use log rotation based on date. But it
seems not to work together. After my investigation I can say:
    - access.log in common format can be rotated based on date an on size,
    - access.log in extended format (either in its default form or
completely redefined) cannot be rotated neither based on date nor size.
In the second case at first time WebLogic tries to rotate logfile
IOException is thrown with a message like "java.io.IOException: Failed
to rename log file on attempt to rotate logs". Than it throws
IOException with a message "Exception flushing HTTP log file. (Bad file
descriptor)." when it tries to flush content of logfile to the disk.
After that WebLogic server stops to write to access.log.
Is it possible to rotate access.log in extended format?

  • [logging] Problems to configure logging rotation.

    Hi,
I have an application .ear deployed in weblogic v10.3.1.0
This application use java.util.logging to write a log file.
          fh = new FileHandler(logFileName,0,1,true);
          fh.setFormatter(new XMLFormatter());
          logger.addHandler(fh);
FileHandler(String pattern, int limit, int count, boolean append)
pattern - the pattern for naming the output file
limit - the maximum number of bytes to write to any one file. If this is zero, then there is no limit. (Defaults to no limit).
count - the number of files to use
    append - specifies append mode
    http://www.javadocexamples.com/java/util/logging/java.util.logging.FileHandler.html
logFileName is dynamic with date formated like this yyyMMdd + ApplicationName + ".log"
This file is created but I have also yyyyMMddSEC.log.1, yyyyMMddSEC.log.2, yyyyMMddSEC.log.3,...
I DON'T WANT THESE FILES_, that's why I put limit to 0, count to 1 and append to true.
This code works without jdev/weblogic but has not effect in weblogic.
    Q1. Why?
So I go to Weblogic console: Domain Structure-> DefaultDomain->Logging
    Log file name: logs/DefaultDomain.log
    Rotation type: None
    NONE
Messages accumulate in a single file.
You must erase the contents of the file when the size is too large.
Note that WebLogic Server sets a threshold size limit of 500 MB before it forces a hard rotation to prevent excessive log file growth.
But it doesn't work, Weblogic continue to create log files like this *<filename>.log.<n>*
    Q2. Why?
    I have also created weblogic.xml in ViewControler/WEB-INF
    thanks to this documentation:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E13222_01/wls/docs103/webapp/weblogic_xml.html#wp1063199
    but it doesn't work...again.
    Q3. Why?
Q4. If I want applications manage themselves their log, how to deactivate the logging handler in weblogic (LogFileMBean?)
    Thanks for your help.

You may want to ask in the WebLogic Server - Diagnostics / WLDF / SNMP forum. They own logging.

OK. I think I´ve found the solution. Apparently selinux needs to be in permissive mode:
Check to see if permissive or enforcing
    cat /selinux/enforce
    0 = Permissive
    1 = enforcing
    If 1 run
    echo 0 > /selinux/enforce

  • LMS - log rotation based on time period

    Dear All
can we configure log rotation to be based on time period (ex:past one year)instead of log file size.
if it is feasable please advise who to do it?
    Regards;
    Antonio

    I am not sure if I understand it correct, but you can do this easily by defining the expected file size of the log file to rotate;
    logrot runs on a scheduled basis and checks if the log file has reached the defined file size - if not it will do nothing else the file will be backed up. The key point is the configured file size;
I use this for the syslog file to have a backup for each month:
        schedule logrot to run every first of each month and set the file size to a low value guarantes that I ve got a file for every month;
from the online help of logrot:
    http://:1741/help/cmf/index.html?sysad_adm_logrotate.html
    4. Specify the number of archive revisions. If you do not want to keep any archives, enter 0 (the default) for this option.
    5. Specify the maximum file size. The log will not be rotated until this size is reached. The unit is in kilobytes (KB). The default is 1024 KB or 1 MB.
why do you want to keep all log messages of a complete year in one file - what do you want to do?

  • Default Apache / PHP or Precompiled Apache 2 + PHP 5?

I'd really appreciate any insight into how I (n00b) can use the default Apache configuration to learn PHP (where is it?) or is setting up another Apache/PHP instance in /usr/local/ safe?
This is the tutorial I would follow if it is safe to upgrade to PHP5 / Apache 2:
    http://www.entropy.ch/blog/2006/05/12/Universal-Binary-Apache-2-configure-Line.h tml
    http://www.entropy.ch/software/macosx/php/
    So far, I've cd /usr/local
    curl -s http://www2.entropy.ch/download/apache2-2.2.3-macosx-universal.tar.gz | sudo tar -xzvf -
Do I need to remove the above to prevent conflicts with OSX's default apache? I don't even know where to find the default install or where to go from here.
Ullman's PHP&MySQL book is sitting in front of me waiting to be explored once I can get this installation completed, so any direction is MUCH appreciated

    Thanks again Charlie!
    You're welcome.
I did download the Apache2 version of PHP5 - so i'm assuming i'd need to remove both and redownload the correct version?
Yeah, do that first. You should be able to just re-run the correct PHP5 installer. If that doesn't work, you can delete the old install with this Terminal command:
<pre class="command">sudo rm -Rf /usr/local/php5</pre>By the way, if you want to delete the Apache 2 installation, the command would be:
<pre class="command">sudo rm -Rf /usr/local/apache2</pre>When you're typing those commands, be very careful not to have any spaces in the paths. That could result in accidentally erasing more than you'd intended.
Here's the result of httpd -V you requested:
    Server version: Apache/1.3.33 (Darwin)
Okay, so at least the command line is still seeing the stock Apache server. I think you should be fine.
And finally the result for sudo /usr/sbin/apachectl start:
    Processing config directory: /private/etc/httpd/users/*.conf
    Processing config file: /private/etc/httpd/users/+entropy-php.conf
Syntax error on line 8 of /private/etc/httpd/users/+entropy-php.conf:
Cannot load /usr/local/php5/libphp5.so into server: (reason unknown)
/usr/sbin/apachectl start: httpd could not be started
I suspect that the error there is just because the PHP5 module is for Apache 2 and that's why it can't be loaded. Once you install the correct PHP5, that message is likely to go away.
A couple quick notes on Apache. First, if you succeed in starting it from the command line, it's possible that the Sharing preferences won't show that it's running. I'm not sure how that works under Tiger, but it used to be that it didn't always reflect the true state of the Apache server if it was stopped or started using the command line.
Second, if you want to use the Sharing preference to stop and start it, you can always look at the results using the Console application. It's in your utilities folder, and the logs you're looking for are in the /var/www/httpd folder. The error log is especially helpful.
Finally, I'm going to be kind busy next few days, so if you post and don't get a response, I'm not ignoring you, and I'll get back when I can...
    best,
    charlie

    Dear,
Just to understand syslog log rotation. I have configured syslog_info file for log rotation and size i have give is 100mb with 0 no of backups. I have scheduled it to run every week with a backup path. Basically i dont want any backups and i want the syslog_info to be overwritten when it reaches 100mb, are my setting correct?
    thanks,

    yes that is right,
you can see it also explained in the logrot document
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/ciscoworks_common_services_software/3.1.1/user/guide/admin.html#wp645704
Step 5 Specify the number of archive revisions. If you do not want to keep any archives, enter 0 (the default) for this option.

    Hi,
we use LMS3.2 (windows single-server)  for ~4500 devices and have a problem with log rotation.
    That's our configured log roation:

    1.
    D:\CSCOpx\log\dcrclient.log

The backup directory is the same as the usual log directory. The size of the 3 files is already bigger than the configured size in log roation, see:
    dcrclient.log     2,1 GB
    ICServer.log     1,1 GB
    syslog.log        9,7 GB
After the log roation configuration we restarted the daemon manager, but it's not working. There are no backup files created and the 3 files are still growing.

After you configure the log rotation you need and restart the daemons, you need to schedule the job. The schedule buttong is available under
Common Services -> Server -> Admin -> Log Rotation.

  • Import theme not working - apache log shows ORA-00942

    Hi,
I'm doing some development using htmldb v2 (of which I am greatly impressed). Everything is going well, but none of the import facilities seem to work (e.g. import theme, workspace etc). I get Page not found when pressing the Import button with the following in the Apache log:
mod_plsql: /pls/htmldb/wwv_flow.accept HTTP-404 ORA-00942: table or view does not exist
The Workspace I'm using is a new one called SBASEW which sits on a schema called SBASEW. I want to transfer a customised theme between two different applications under this Workspace - hence why I want to us the import. I read one thread which suggested it's privileges on wwv_flow_file_object$, but my sbasew schema user can see this table OK. I've checked my DAD against the recommended settings and can't see anything wrong. It is as follows:

    Ian,
    Try changing this line:
    PlsqlDocumentTablename wwv_flow_file_object$
    to this:
    PlsqlDocumentTablename wwv_flow_file_objects$

  • Agent log rotation

    Agent - Sunone Agent 2.1
    Webserver - IIS
    Policy Server - IS 6.0 SP1.
How do you get the agent log to rotate on size/time? Is there a parameter?
Currently we have to manually delete it.

Log rotation feature available in 2.2 web agents. You need to find other ways to do it.
