Delete layer mask and not image?

I create a layer mask on a layer and then I duplicate the layer and I want to delete the layer mask on the duplicate layer, though keep the image part. I select the layer mask and hit delete, though it deletes everything on the layer. How can I keep the image portion of the layer?
Thanks.

There are several ways including dragging the layer mask to the trash icon
at the bottom of the layers panel (pick delete in the dialog that pops up)
or right clicking on the layer mask and choosing Delete Layer Mask.

• How copy a layer and its layer mask to another image?

Using PSE9, how can a copy a layer and its layer mask to another image?
The on-line help contains a topic on how to copy a layer but trying the different methods in the help topic results in either nothing being copied or just the layer without its layer mask being copied. Thanks.

How are you copying? If you float your images, so they are both partially visible in the work area, make the one with the to be copied layer active. Then drag the layer from the layers palette onto the other image. Now you should have both the layer and the mask on the second image.

• Why use layer masks and adjustment layers?

I've been using PSE and CS successfully for years.
One thing I have never understood is: why use layer masks and adjustment layers, instead of simply creating a copy of the subject layer (the one I want to make changes to) and experimenting with that? It's quick (Ctrl-J), I can do it as many times as I want, I'm not affecting my Background layer. If I like the changes, I can keep them. I can switch the copy on and off to compare with the Background layer. I can do any type of blend or combination I desire. I can insert Gradient layer(s), select any part of the copy and (Ctrl-J) create a new layer containing only the selected part. I can adjust size, rotate, do anything.
It almost seems that "layer mask" and "adjustment layer" are mainly another layer of terminology; can anyone explain (preferably in 50 words or less) how they are intrinsically different from or superior to working with copies of the Background layer? What can be done with them that can't be done simply using copies of the Background layer?

Here's a very basic example of the advantage of using a layer mask.
I have this picture of a sunflower and I want to convert the background to black & white, leaving just the flower in color. I duplicated the Background layer, converted it to B&W and proceeded to use the Eraser to uncover the flower color. But I made a mistake and erased outside the flower. There is no way to correct this other than deleting the layer and starting again.
Now let's use a layer mask on the B&W layer. Set the Foreground/Background colors to the defaults black/white. Using the Brush tool paint on the mask with black to reveal the color. Here I painted too far, revealing a green leaf in the background. No need to start over. Simply switch to white and paint the excess to convert back to the B&W.
Tip: while painting you can type "X" to toggle between black and white.
You could also select the flower using the various selection tools and then fill the selection with black. If it turns out the selection was not 100% accurate you can then fine-tune the result by painting on the mask with black or white as necessary.

• Can anybody say why In the layer menu the background color is white when opening a layer mask, and why does it automatically turns black by simply opening the layer mask properties menu? The vector mask is white anyway.

• Layer mask suddenly not working, how to fix this?

Please help!
I have been using the layer mask before and it has worked fine until now. Suddenly it only paints black and white colors, not revealing or hiding as it should. I have the mask layer selected properly. I have reset the brush tool and all the tools. I have the brush mode set to normal.
I tried also the eraser, it paints black too.
I'm using Photoshop CC.

If you hold the Alt|option key when you click on the Layer Mask icon in the layers palette to target the layer mask Photoshop will display the layer mask in the images window not the composite image. Layer Mask are gray scale channels. All you can see is the mask Black, White and Gray. Could you have Displayed the layer mask by accident. Are you sure you have the layer mask targeted to show the composite image or could you have targeted its to show the Layer Mask instead of the composite image.

• My text layer mask is not working when I test it

My text layer mask does not appear when I test the movie. The
mask works move the key along the timeline, but when I test the
movie nothing shows up. I'm doing exactly the same thing I do when
I mask images. I actually imported an image to the text layer and
the mask worked correctly. What am I doing wrong?

provide a link the fla - make sure your text layer is truly
linked to the Mask layer. What is the
font? Did you try breaking apart the font until it becomes
raw shapes? not that you want to do that
but save as with new name - try it and if it still doesnt
work, then the issue is not with your font.

• Layer Mask Suddenly Not Working

Hello!
I have been using PS 6 for several months now, with no problems; I totally love it! I tend to do a lot of heavily composited photos, so I use layer masks a lot. All of a sudden this afternoon, they aren't working. I am 100% sure I am selecting the mask itself and not the layer (paint colors change to only black and white with the slider). My opacity and flow are both at 100. I am using just a standardsoft-edged paint brush. I paint on back, and nothing changes.
What's weird is if I invert the layer mask and paint white on, that will show up. But if I switch over to black again, it won't make anything disappear.
I'm so perplexed by this; I've never had an issue like this before!
Thank you for your help!

Hi Sarah,
Do you see the black appear on the layer mask in the Layer Panel?
Have you checked that your brush mode is set to Normal?

I want to delete a few contacts, apps, pics etc from my iphone, but when I delete and connect to my laptop they sync and come back again. How can I delete those items and not get them back when I connect my iphone to my laptop?
Also where exactly on the laptop is teh data stored.
Thank you!!

go to 'Edit' in the menu bar. Then choose 'Preferences'.
you'll see a pop-up and there's a tab called 'Devices' there. If you click that, you will be able to check a box that says 'prevent automatic syncing for iPods, iPads and iPhones' or something like that.
Hope this helps
NB: if you don't even see the menu bar that has options like 'File, Edit, View, etc', first click the black/white square button on the top left of your screen, and then click 'show menu bar'. It should pop right up.
Good luck

• A small but very irritating bug in Mail: after pressing the spacebar after typing an apostrophe in a word such as "we're", the cursor moves to the left i.e. backwards, and not to the right, effectively deleting a space and not creating one.

When composing an email in Mac Mail I've noticed a small but very irritating bug: pressing the spacebar after typing an apostrophe in a word, e.g. "we're", the cursor moves to the left i.e. backwards, and not to the right, effectively deleting a space and not creating one.
Any ideas?

I just recreated this problem on my iMac (wired KB, no wireless KB) by changing Mail > Preferences > Composing > Spellcheck from "as I type" to "never". Then type a contraction ending in 're and the space bar causes the cursor to jump back as others have stated, to the spot 'r|e
Next, I went into System Preferences > Keyboard > Text, and turned off "use smart quotes" and the problem went away again.
From this point (smart quotes off, spell checking never), if I turn Smart Quotes ON, the problem returns.
The problem is dependent on the state of both settings.
The spacebar in Mail "works" if I have either of the following setting combinations:
Keyboard: smart quotes OFF, Mail: check spelling ANY SETTING
Keyboard: smart quotes ON, Mail: check spelling AS I TYPE
Other combinations FAIL
Keyboard: smart quotes ON, Mail: Check spelling NEVER
Keyboard: smart quotes ON, Mail: Check Spelling WHEN I CLICK SEND
Looks to me like there's a bug in Mail > Preferences > Check spelling > NEVER and WHEN I CLICK SEND that interacts badly with Keyboard > Smart quotes ON.
Thanks.

• Where do I go to delete old messages and not SAVE any?

Where do I go to delete old messages and not save any?

Hello there Ibent50,
If I understand correctly it sounds like you are wanting to delete some messages or whole conversations on your iPhone. This page from the iPhone User Guide should help you do that:
Manage conversations - iPhone
Delete a message. Touch and hold a message or attachment, tap More, select additional items if desired, then tap .
Delete a conversation. In the Messages list, swipe the conversation to the left, then tap Delete.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Cheers,

• Photoshop TIFFs with layer masks do not display correctly

I am sure other people must have this problem, but I cannot find any related posts so here goes:
I open an image using the "open in external editor" command (typically a RAW file converted to a TIFF), edit in Photoshop and save the file (as a TIFF, I do not use PSD format)
If the PS edit contains any layer masks or alpha channels (masks in the channel pallet) it does not display correctly when it reappears in Aperture. Only the top most mask will display, assuming I have multiple layer masks in the PS edit.
Not only will the TIFF only appear as the mask in Aperture, but Aperture will print or email the mask, not the PS edited file as it should appear.
It seems that Aperture only recognizes the layer mask (or alpha channel mask) as the image, and all the other layers etc are disregarded.
Is this a confirmed bug, or is there some setting I have not correctly configured or some other issue?
I love Aperture, but this problem is nearly a deal-breaker for my workflow, and would be for any serious photoshop user, I would imagine!
I cannot believe this is still a problem in version 1.5, which is the version I am using (thus my system is 10.4.8)

David,
I assume you mean in the edited PS TIFF file:
In different cases I have either:
A. A TIFF file with layer a layer mask
B. A TIFF file with multiple layer masks
C. A TIFF file with an alpha channel mask
D. A TIFF file with multiple alpha channel masks
E. A TIFF file with any combination of the above
the outcome is the same, they all do not display correctly in Aperture. It does not seem to matter if the file was opened in PS from Aperture via the open with external editor command or if it was worked on outside Aperture entirely then imported. I do have maximize compatibility in PS checked (though I understand this is only for PSD files, though perhaps I am wrong here)
any thoughts?

• Layer Mask Transparency not White

When I go to make a selection in Photoshop CS6 and then click on layer mask from the background layer, the inverse selection is trasparent, rahter than white. How do I change this? Thank you!

Sorry for not describing it in better detail. Here is another example. When I go to crop image and expand my canvas beyond the borders and click ok, the background should be white, instead it is transparent.
When I try to convert a selection from my background image into a layer mask by selecting and then clicking on the mask icon, my background is transparent rather than white. I have cleared all my settings and am totally stumped on what I should do. Any help would be much appreciated!

• Can't delete Layer Mask content in PS CS4.

I am completely baffled with this and am thinking that it's something obvious I am just missing.
I have a photo open and click on the "Create new fill or adjustments layer" button at the bottom of the Layers panel.
In CS3 I able to create a layer (say Levels) and apply it, then select the eraser tool and delete sections of that adjustment layer that I did not want revealing an unaltered section of the original photo behind it.
I can not seem to do this in CS4. I can add the layer and select the eraser tool but it will not delete anything.
:s Help??
Thanks.

>You have to make sure and explicitly target the Layer mask in order to affect it.

good point. make sure the mask is selected first. :)

>CS3 has buggy targeting behavior

really? i don't think i've ever noticed it. <shrug>

• Layer Mask and Vector Mask on the same layer

Hello guys,
maybe this is a stupid question, but i am having trouble understanding this one...
If you make a selection on a layer and click the mask button, you create a mask...
But if you hit the mask button one more time, Photoshop puts a vector mask on that layer,
right beside the layer mask.
To be honest I haven't been able to do much with that vector mask, i experimented with it, but i just
can't figure out, how it interacts with the layer mask next to it (if it interacts that is).
Can someone help me understand please?
What's the usability of having a vector mask next to a layer mask on the same layer?
An explanation with a paradigm would be nice!
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
They both will mask the image. One will be pixel based, the other editable vector. Here is and example of round soft mask on Mona combined with a hard edged vector mask (on top of a still life by Frida!)
How you can use this is up to you.

• Photoshop Generator: Unbound Layer Mask do not render correctly

I'm a huge fan of the Generator feature in Photoshop CC. However, there seems to be a problem with layer masks: If you unbound the layer mask from it's content layer, the generated images will not match the actual image. It seems, that the layer mask is positioned in different way.
