Deleted syslog.conf file

Hello. I was trying to configure proftpd and intended to delete proftpd.conf, but instead I deleted syslog.conf. I am using the following version of Mac OS X:
System Version: Mac OS X 10.4.10 (8R2232)
Kernel Version: Darwin 8.10.1
Could somebody with a similar configuration please post the contents of their syslog.conf file so that I can re-create the file on my system without having to re-install the OS?

/etc/syslog.conf already exists - you just need to edit it to your needs.
The issue, of course, is that only root can edit this file. Your best bet is to run your favorite text editor using sudo in Terminal.app, e.g.:
sudo vi /etc/syslog.conf

  • Cisco Prime Soft Appliance not saving changes to syslog.conf

    Greetings,
I'm having an issue with the syslog.conf file on a Cisco Prime LMS 4.2.4 soft appliance with a Solaris base.  My workplace uses local4 as the logging facility for its network devices, and according to a discussion I found on this site, I need to add the line:
    local4.info  /var/log/syslog_info
I have attempted this several times; we're approaching at least 5 attempts today.  I have attached text files created from putty logs where I've attempted to make the necessary change.  I appreciate any assistance the community can provide.
    Regards,
    Rob

    Hi, Afroz,
I really appreciate your assistance, but I'm afraid my hopes have been dashed.  The syslog.conf reverted to its original configuration.  I will go through my steps to be sure that I understood your suggestion properly.
I edited the syslog.conf to put all messages from local4 in /opt/CSCOpx/conf/syslog-entries.txt.  Then, I exited the shell to the console, issued the 'write mem' command, and closed the session.  Upon my reconnection, I found that my changes to the syslog.conf were not saved.
Did I make the correct edits in the correct places?  Another question, is this bug present in the versions of Prime LMS running Linux and/or Windows, or does it only exist in the soft appliance running Solaris?
    Regards,
    Rob
    Edit:
I'm reading the "Installation and Migration of Cisco Prime" PDF, and it gives me the impression that Cisco Prime is only supported as Windows, Solaris, and soft appliance installations.  Is that correct?  If it is correct, then installation of Cisco Prime LMS is not supported on other Linux distros such as Ubuntu Server, CentOS, Fedora, etc.?
    My thanks.

Usually we dont recommend to change anything on syslog.conf. Syslog_info is the file where all the syslogs coming from network pointed to LMS server is written.
Usually they should be controlled at the device level by checking the logging level of devices.
Mostly ASA/FW's send excessively huge amount of syslogs to LMS server which should be controlled. Also, you can check the logrot utility to control the syslog_info log size to keep in check. Logrot is an Log file rotation utilit in LMS.
Log files can expand and fill up disk space. Log files rotation helps you manage the log files more efficiently. See
Maintaining Log Files  for an overview of maintaining the log files in LMS Server.
For more details on logrot check userguide :

  • Cisco Works Daemon Manager Service down after deleting Syslog files

    Dears,
Cisco Works Daemon Manager Service is not comiing up after deleting the syslog.log files from NMSroot, al other services are comes up except this.
    please help ...
    Rgds
    Aslam

Not sure what is happening, but I see several services that should be started by the daemon manager, that are already started!!
You best stop them, make sure the services are set to manual except daemon manager, tftp syslog and rcp who are automatic.
Then I suggest to reboot server. If the daemon manager still can start run the resetcasuser.exe  in \CSCOpx\setup\support\   and try again.

  • Configuration issue of syslog.conf

    Dear All,
My client is facing a configuration issue of syslog.conf.
They have set a cacti on a Linux server for monitoring of all servers snmp & syslog.
The part of snmp has set up successfully but cannot send the syslog to the cacti.
My client want the syslog can keep on the localhost and send to cacti for monitoring
we have tried to do the following things for make it work:
    Insert the information (*.* @10.251.99.74) in /etc/syslog.conf
    Restart service of system-log
Deleted all word of loghost in the /etc/hosts file
But still not work. Anyone can give me suggestion or idea about this?

    Thank you for your reply.
It is tab. But I think the problem is solaris cannot use *.* to represent all logs.
I have used the following is work
    *.err;ker.debug;daemon.notice;mail.crit @10.251.99.74
If that is not the mail reason, please put me right.

After making manual changes in obj.conf, have you tried clicking the 'Apply' link in admin console and then choosing 'Load configuration Changes' option?

  • Apache conf file not working

I've seen instructions all over the internet about rewriting a .conf file to get Apache to see your user "Sites" folder in Mountain Lion. Mine refuses to work. The server still works at localhost, but localhost/~user will not, I get "Safari cannot connect to server localhost."
I'm really the only user that uses it, is there any problem with just changing to document root in the httpd.conf file to /Users/user/Sites?
Or, any ideas about the user.conf file? Permissions are correct, file is correct, apache restarted.

Interesting. I ran apachectl configtest, and it found a syntax error in my user.conf file, which I thought I deleted. All this time I've been working in /etc/apache2/users, as the online tutorials specify. The other .conf file, brought to my attention by the configtest, is in /private/etc/apache2/users.
The error: a space between allow, deny.
Fixed the error... all is well. Thanks for the configtest tip... I never knew about that one.

  • Two dbswitch.conf files on Solaris 9 DS server.

I know what the dbswitch.conf file is supposed to hold the location of configuration directory. On one server that's running Solaris 9, the admin server, and the bundled SunONE directory server, I noticed that there are two dbswitch.conf files:
    /etc/iplanet/ds5/shared/config/dbswitch.conf
    and
    /etc/iplanet/ds5/userdb/dbswitch.conf
Can someone tell me which applications actually use each of those files?
    Thanks.

Well, anything with "Demo" or "Source" in the title you can delete usually without any problems.
It looks like everything in your list is X11 related. Its really a question for you. If you plan to perform TOTAL CLI type administration on this machine, you can delete the X11 stuff completely. This of course assumes there in nothing in the SunONE application software suite which doesn't require X11 capabilities for configuration. I've never used the SunONE app server but I SERIOUSLY doubt it does. More then likely its administration is browser based.
BUT, if you want to perform some limited X11 display back stuff from time to time, you're going to need the X11 stuff.

  • Prevent Server.app from repeatedly hosing .conf files?

It seems every time I add or delete web server entries the Server.app replaces all my site .conf files, requiring a tedious manual replacing of AllowOverride from None back to All.  Is there some way to prevent it from altering the files for sites I didn't change, or a way to make All the default value? Very frustrating.
    Thanks in advance!

Well, since apparently no one knows the answer to this, I'll share what I dug up today.
In the /etc/apache2 readme.txt file (I'll be happy if/when Apple releases an actual Lion Server manual that covers all of this. If I wanted to play scavenger hunt through file systems looking for miscellaneous readme files to learn how to use software I'd have stayed with Linux where that sort of thing is in vogue), there is this little nugget:
    =======================================
    sites_disabled/default_default.conf
    sites_disabled/0000_default_default.conf
This is the configuration file template for all new default virtual hosts created by the Server application. Administrators may modify it directly. (It is installed as default_default.conf and then is renamed to 0000_default_default.conf by the Server application.)
    =======================================
So, I changed the 0000_default_default.conf file so the AllowOverride is set to All instead of None.  Now whenever I create a new site entry (or change something so that Server.app decides to rewrite all of them for me whether I want it to or not) at least now the default is sensible and I don't have to go back and edit them all again.
    Hope that helps someone.

  • Deleted my fstab file

I ran pacdiff a few days ago (I think that was the command) and it offered to replace a bunch of system files including /etc/passwd and /etc/groups
I figured out that I had kicked myself out of my groups and I no longer had a home directory (with all my data!) but I figured out what to do and I fixed both of those and manually checked the files so everything seemed OK. I also fixed the pacman conf file.
Then I rebooted and my home directory didn't exist. So I logged in as root and NOTHING exists. The entire file system was read only.
I started freaking out--I lost my home with all my files and my system is trashed. I was sweating bullets.
Then I figured out that something I did had deleted my /etc/fstab. I whipped out the ArchLinux Installation Guide and rebuilt that file and rebooted and everything is just fine now.
I just wanted to share about what an idiot I can be sometimes, that's all.
    Thank you.

  • [solved] No dhcpd : No /etc/dhcpd.conf file

I've managed to get the KDE desktop running, but ever since starting KDE, I haven't been able to connect to anything online. When I tried to check and edit the /etc/dhcpd.conf file, that file doesn't exist. Looked at the Beginner's Guide but didn't see where I skipped whatever I should have done to make the file. Install worked great, so dhcp worked for that.
What do I do to get dhcp to work? Checked /etc/rc.conf and eth0="dhcp" is uncommented.

If those are what you are placing in the daemon section of your /etc/rc.conf then that's probably your problem. Don't use networkmanager daemon unless you have 'networkmanager' and 'network-manager-applet' installed.
    Try this
(hal syslog-ng network netfs crond alsa)
