Deleting Mail cache

I've had iphones and ipads for a while now, and every time I get a new one I restore the previous backup, so over time, the dreaded 'Others' has crept up to a rather invasive 3gb+.
I often clear the caches of apps like facebook and monitor space usage through settings, and I've even got phoneclean installed and run it ocassionally.
There's one thing that I can't seem to shake and it's doing my nut in!
'Mail and attachments' takes up over 500mb on my phone and nearly a gig on my tablet. I have a lot of email accounts on them and often open attachments (PDFs, JPGs etc) which I believe end up in the cache. Once I've seen them, I'm normally done with them for good so don't want them indefinitely clogging up the cache, but at the same time I want to keep the message in my gmail accounts. Frustratingly I can't seem to get rid of this dead space. Phoneclean won't let me get at it, there's no option in settings>usage and I even painstakingly removed all the email accounts and waited a couple of days hoping it would naturally flush out but nothing.....
Has anyone had any joy in freeing up space from the mail cache?

If you want to get rid of all your data, why don’t you just Erase and Install Mac OS X?

  • Question on Mail cache

In ~/Library/Caches/Mail there are scores of folders, sub folders and cache files.
Some are over a year old. I intend deleting them, but why are these cache files being made and to what purpose are they used.
I have a general understanding of caching being used to speed up repetitive tasks but I can't see what benefit is given to Mail to use cached data?
Is this part of 'indexing' which sometimes flashes through when Mail is first opened and what disadvantage would occur if they were deleted?
    regards roam

I delete the Mail Cache folder once a week.
Do you? Since I emptied mine, over a week ago it has been dormant, that is, it has not cached anything. Perhaps this is because I have "Display images and embedded objects in HTML messages." turned off.
As you say an empty cache is no problem.
I was a bit wary of emptying it because of that sub-folder numbering system that is used for dating entries, the same as used in iPhoto. Anyway, all is well.
I have a copy of Onyx. It is a nice app' but I don't use it.
    Thanks for your input.

  • Where does the Mail cache file reside?

My email inbox suddenly doesn't show anything newer than April 2011. The last time this happened, Apple Care walked me through deleting an AOL or Mail cache file, but I can't find it now. Where does the archived mail cache hide?

If you have iTunes set to consolidate your Library, then yes, you have 3 copies of the movie, USB, ITunes library folder, and iPad.
If not, then iTunes merely adds a pointer to the current location of the file, and then copies it over to the iPad.
If the USB is removed, the movie is still technically part of the library, but will not be accessible, it will show up grayed out and not be playable.

  • Is it safe to delete the cache file folder from library

is it safe to delete the cache file folder from library ?

As I understand it Robo doesn't really 'do' third-party
source control. We use SourceGear Vault, but really only as a
repository for the files. We can't really work concurrently because
Robo needs exclusive access to the top level project files. But it
kind of works for us, because we're on opposite sides of the globe.
I see what you're saying on the 'local' versions of (say) the
cpd files conflicting. If anyone else has an informed view, I'm all
ears. We've set it up this way ourselves - I don't know of anyone
doing the same. If someone tells me this is a bad idea, I'm happy
    to think again.
    Cheers!

  • Delete mail from server after removed from IN BOX

I have a mail management issue I have not been able to fully solve.
I am balancing the same POP email accounts among the laptop using Mail (for home use) and my desktop using Eudora Pro (for work). Using Eudora, I can manually select to delete a message from the server. Eudora's manual deletions are flawless. Using Mail, the only option I can see that will help me do this is to select delete mail "When moved from In Box." If I hit the "delete" key, wouldn't that be the same as "moving if from the IN BOX?" When is the protocol actually carried out? On the next mail check? Immediately? Upon quitting and restarting Mail? I'm confused as to how this happens and why it does not seem to work all of the time.
Any and all assistance is most appreciated.
    Much obliged,
    Mick

Yes, deleting a message counts as moving it out of
the inbox. The commands to remove the message from
the server are sent the next time you check mail from
that server, but only if there are new messages to be
received from the server. Yes, many of us feel that
is a bug in Mail, that it should send the remove from
server commands the next time you check mail, whether
or not there are new messages to be downloaded.
Oh Gawd, I bet that's it. Yes, if that is the case, I would agree. It does not lead to efficient mail management if there needs to be a new message there. Do you know of any plans to change or alter that? Or has someone written an AppleScript of some kind to execute the command regardless?
It's a great command, otherwise. It's nice to be able to delete a message off of one computer and have it delete off of the server without any extra hassle.
Just wondering if there are any workarounds out there other than sending oneself a new message to get the delete from server command to activate.
    cheers,
    Mick

  • Delete mail from server when removed from inbox

I have a POP e-mail account set up. Under the mail account advanced settings there is an option to delete mail from the server when I delete it from the iPad inbox. I assume this is a valid option for the account since it is shown, and it is what I would like to do. However it doesn't appear to be working. Is this truly an available option?

I also have a POO account wit ph Verizon and experienced the same thing. Apple tech said that is a property of POP accounts and I would have to change the account to Imap for the iPad to be able to delete from the server.

  • Delete mail from server using ipad not computer

How do I delete mail from the server using my Ipad

That completely depends on your email service provider.
For gmail, for example, you would do this as follows:
Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > [your gmail account] > Advanced > [Move Discarded Messages Into] Deleted Mailbox

  • Delete mail from server

I use a pop3 account for mail. Can I set up the mail program to delete mail from server when I delete mail locally?

Not precisely. You can set it to delete when when you move a message from the Inbox which should have the same effect in most cases, but I haven't tested it to make sure.
Mail -> Accounts -> Your POP account. Go to the Advanced pane and check the box that says "remove copy from server after retrieving a message" and make the appropriate setting in the pulldown.
    Regards.

  • Delete mail from server when deleting from mail

    I like Mail.
But - the ONE feature I miss from Entourage is this:
Delete mail from server when deleting the trash
Mail can be set to delete messages from the server -- after downloading to the local computer. OK - BUT - I read my email from 3 computers. I want to keep the messages on the server - unless I delete them after trashing - and to read them on 3 computers.
The BEST way is to delete when I trash them -- NOT when I read them.
Using the mail program to see all messages on the server and to then delete them one-by-one is a major PITA.
How can I tell Apple to add this feature?

Use the "When moved from Inbox" option that should do it. If you trash it then it goes, if you move it goes... HTH

  • Unable to delete mail from inbox. Message cannot move mail from inbox to trash.  How do I solve this.

I am unable to delete mail from my inbox.  A window appears saying "message could not be moved to the mailbox trash.  How do I fix this.

Give your phone a reboot - hold down power/home button together for 10 to 15 secs or until you see the apple logo and then release, wait for your phone to reboot and then try moving  your mail again.

  • How do I set up Apple Mail with Yahoo (IMAP) so I can delete mail on my iphone but leave it on the server and iMac.

I am trying to maintain my inbox on my imac while not carrying around all my mail on my iphone.  As of now, I only seem to be able to sync the inboxes.  If I delete a mail on my iphone, it disappears on both the server and imac.  I only seem to be able to make it move the mail to the deleted mail box and keep it there.

That's the way IMAP servers work. The messages really live on the server; the iPhone and the iMac just view them.

How can I set up my email so when I delete mail from my Mac it deletes from my iPhone as well?

That is a function of your email account, if it is an Imap account it will sync, if it's a POP account, it won't.

  • All the artwork in Album View in iTunes is fuzzy/blurry unless i repeatedly delete the cache.

I recently bought a new laptop and transferred all my itunes tracks onto the new one from an external. Everything is fine, but in album list all the thumbnails are fuzzy and blurry. They album covers show up sharp in every other view such as coverflow, preview pane and grid view as well as on the ipod, but are fuzzy in album view. Some one suggested deleting the artwork cache to allow iTunes to rebuild it.I deleted it and reopened iTunes and found that this worked perfectly and all my artwork became sharp again. But if I close iTunes and reopen it, all the artwork wgoes back to being fuzzy and  stays that way until I deleted the cache again. It only fixes it as long as I dont close out iTunes.  How can I make them sharp again permanently like on my old laptop? (All my artwork is manually added and does not come from iTunes)

    Responding to your request here.
I can't say it's a problem I've noticed personally, though now you've made me look it does seem that the large thumbnail is slightly fuzzier than the same image in the artwork panel. I have the artwork panel as small as it goes (small screen) and it is still slightly larger than the image in the browser so that might be all there is to it.
Here's an example from my screen.
Perhaps iTunes is storing a thumbnail at say "medium" size which it then blows up to create the large image. Are you seeing a similar effect or is your "fuzzy" art much fuzzier? A screenshot would be helpful.

    - Reset. nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
