Deploying servlets on the J2EE platform.

Hello all,
I have a pretty simple question. Does the J2EE platform have a web server for deploying servlets or do I need to download something to add to the platform to be able to run servlets? I have completed going through the tutorial for developing Dukes Bookstore Servlet. I got it to run and everything is fine. I have developed an HTTP Servlet that I need to run for an application to communicate with. I went through the steps I needed to be able to deploy this servlet through deploytool but I am getting an HTTP 404 error telling me the servlet is not available. Am I getting this error because the J2EE platform is only designed to run it's own example programs, meaning that I need to add a web server to the platform to get non J2EE examples to run through deploytool? Or is there some other reason for this error? If you need to see my HTTP servlet source code let me know and I will post it? Thanks, in advance, for any information you can give me concerning this issue.
Sincerely,
Michael Sucena

Sorry, I should have said "shell variables". They set a number of them in that catalina.bat file. The actual call to java has a line:
%_EXECJAVA% %JAVA_OPTS% %CATALINA_OPTS% -Xrunjdwp:transport=%JPDA_TRANSPORT%,address=%JPDA_ADDRESS%,server=y,suspend=n %DEBUG_OPTS% -Djava.endorsed.dirs="%JAVA_ENDORSED_DIRS%" -classpath "%CLASSPATH%" -Djava.security.manager -Djava.security.policy=="%SECURITY_POLICY_FILE%" -Dcatalina.base="%CATALINA_BASE%" -Dcatalina.home="%CATALINA_HOME%" -Djava.io.tmpdir="%CATALINA_TMPDIR%" %MAINCLASS% %CMD_LINE_ARGS% %ACTION%
Comment this out. And place an "echo" command in front of %_EXEC_JAVA%. That should output the command the script is trying to run instead of running it (you may have to enclose or escape some of the above in quotes, my DOS scripting has been unused for a while). You should be able to see a typo in the command line being executed.
Other than that, I am not sure what the problem might be. There is no reason to load a file starting with "-D", as this is a command-line argument for the java executable.

  • Deploying servlets in the Sun One Web Server 6.1

    Friends, Please let me know how to deploy servlets in the Sun One Web Server 6.1.
    Thanks in advance,
    Madan.

    You cannot get that behavior.
    When an SSL client and server negotiate the connection, the client sends a list of all the cipher suites it supports. From that list the server will pick the most secure cipher suite which it also supports (if the server doesn't support any of the cipher suites proposed by the client, the connection establishment will fail).
    RC4 (128bit) is more secure than 3DES (112 bit). Thus, a server will never pick 3DES above RC4_128 if both are valid options (i.e. when both client and server support both). If you really wanted to force use of 3DES you need to disable RC4_128 in the server (or all the clients; or both).

  • Hot Deploying Servlets from the command line

    Is it possible to hot deploy a servlet from the command line?

    Use the mbocutil command line tool located in:
    server root/bin/msg/admin/bin
    You can create a folder with spaces by using quotes like thus:
    ./mboxutil -c "user/Tuser/Test Folder"
    -Chris

  • Hot deploying servlets without the admin tool

              Hey, all! I was wondering if there is a way to hot-deploy
              servlets without using the weblogic admin console.
              With ejbs, this is done through weblogic.deploy
              standalone. Thanks for your help!

    WMarks,
    We've done something similar for one or two low-profile apps.
    You can use a tool such as wget ( Wget for Windows ) to download the installer to a known location on the user's workstation, and then run that installer as either a dynamic administrator or the system account in order to perform the installation.
    As others have mentioned, there will always be applications you'll need to find workarounds for if the vendor didn't code their application to be launched as a non-administrative user.
    Along with the least privilege solutions (mostly AD-based), you could investigate options such as VMware ThinApp or ZENworks Application Virtualization for apps that you absolutely have to have run as a non-admin, but remember there is always overhead introduced into the management and deployment process by re-packaging.

  • Pls help me in deploying SERVLET

    hi folks!!!!!!!!!!!
    m new to the j2ee platform & trying to run SERVLET on tomcat 5.
    guys help me as i have tried all tthe ways after reading the book CORE SERVLETS & JSP SE NARTY HALL .
    but still can not run the servlet
    the error is 404 on the servlet
    thanks in advance.

    This is certainly a configuration problem, or it's happening some error on deploying.
    We need more information: how are you deploying your application? It's in an expanded way, or using a war file?
    When you deploy your web application, it does results on some error? (check the tomcat log for that)
    How is your web.xml configured?

  • Problems with my installed J2EE platform.

    I am having trouble working with the J2EE development environment. My issues are as follows:
    1. In trying to run some of the examples include with the environment I have noticed that I do not have all the same directories and directory structure as specified in the the tutorial. For example, a step in the tutorial references using a file in the <INSTALL> (sun\appserver)\docs\tutorial\... directory, I do not have a docs\tutorial directory underneath my <INSTALL> directory. Are there different directory conventions implemented based on what platform to which you are installing the J2EE environment? (We are running WindowsXP Professional)
    2. At the beginning of the tutorial it makes reference to adding some additional information to your path. One such example is adding the <INSTALL>(sun\appserver)\shared\bin directory. I do not have such a directory. I have a <INSTALL>(sun\appserver)\bin directory but not a shared\bin directory.
    (Note: Could the above problems be corrected by merely uninstalling and re-installing the J2EE platform?)
    3. When I try to run the Duke's Bookstore servlet example I get an HTTP 404: File not found error. Does this error have something to do with the structure of my created web component, my browser (IE), or something else entirely?
    Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Michael Sucena

    Note that tutorial is not being shipped as part of J2EE SDK distribution - it is separate download and must be downloaded and unzipped independently of J2EE SDK installation which you already have. Download URL is here:
    http://java.sun.com/j2ee/1.4/download.html#tutorial
    Only after you download this, you can start following environment setup instructions you are refering to. Please note that you'll have to deal with two different installation directories - one is installation directory of J2EE SDK (one you already have), the other one is installation directory of tutorial (i.e. location where you will unzip downloaded tutorial) - these two may or may not be the same, so pay close attention to instructions. Some of your questions might also be covered in this thread:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=14&thread=470575&tstart=30&trange=15
    (namely, <install_dir>\share\bin folder is now obsolete, unfortunately reference to it was not removed from Tutorial instructions)
    Hope this helps....

  • Life Cycle Management of J2EE Platform

    Posted By: John Oristian on February 27, 2003 @ 02:56 PM
    With all of the APIs and Components involve in the J2EE platform how does one maintain a synchronized system as api/component version change?
    If I am using specification 1.3 does that imply a certain configuration of api and component revs? When spec 1.4 becomes the new specification and I change all api and components to that supported version can I expect my apps developed under 1.3 to work whit 1.4 Spec?
    Is there an SCM tool for the J2EE platform- or is that even necessary?
    Looking forward to your thoughts.
    Thank
    JEO

    Apparently this is reported as a bug.

  • Deploying Servlets

    JDeveloper 3.2 Documentation for deploying servlets says the generated files should be placed in webserver and the classpath is to be set.
    I am using Apache HTTP web server. In which folder should I place the generated files and what should be the class path?
    Later what should be the URL to access the servlet from the browser?
    How can access this deployed Servlet from a JSP?
    Thanks in advance,
    Regards.
    Kavita.
    null

    Kavita,
    You should first check the Apache documentation for specific information about Apache.
    In general, you should place the servlet in a directory that is under the root directory for the server. For Apache, I believe it is htdocs under the installation directory (usually Apache/Apache/).
    You would then add this directory to the jserv.properties file as a wrapper.classpath entry. This will then point Apache to that directory.
    To access the servlet from a browser the general format is htttp://webserver:port/YourDirectoryName/servletName
    This should get you started.

  • Calling a servlet from a JSP page using the J2EE reference implementation

    I have a JSP with an include tag as follows: <jsp:include page="servlet/ConnectionServlet" flush="true" />
    When I use JRUN it works fine. I created an ear file and ported
    the application to the J2EE reference implementation. When running the app under the J2EE reference implementation the ConnectionServlet is never called. I figured it must a deployment issue. I tried adding the ConnectionServlet.class file to the WEB-INF\classes file as servlet\ConnectionServlet.class but the JSP still can't find the servlet. Any ideas where I've gone wrong? TIA, Joe

    I have a JSP with an include tag as follows:
    <jsp:include page="servlet/ConnectionServlet"
    flush="true" />Basically, WEB-INF/classes gets added to the classpath, so the directory structure under this folder should be identical to your package structure. If the ConnectionServlet.class is not actually in a package, then it should be directly in WEB-INF/classes (ie if "servlet" isn't actually the name of your package, don't use a WEB-INF/classes/servlet/" directory).
    Then try taking out the "servlet" from your include tag, so you just have page="/ConnectionServlet" (not sure about the leading slash - try experimenting!)
    if this doesn't work, try adding this to your WEB-INF/web.xml file:
    <web-app><!-- the web-app tags may already be there - don't add more -->
    <servlet>
    <servlet-name>ConnectionServlet</servlet-name>
    <servlet-class>your.full.package.here.ConnectionServlet</servlet-class>
    </servlet>
    <servlet-mapping>
    <servlet-name>ConnectionServlet</servlet-name>
    <url-pattern>/ConnectionServlet</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>
    </web-app>
    Good Luck!

    Hi George,
    Thnx for your reply.
    I have stopped all Application servers and kept only the CI-DB instances running.Retried deploying the ESS packages but still getting the same error.
    Have checked the Visual admin,it is not in SAFE mode,it working normally.
    Have alos checked the CLUSTER Manager Property Values in both Visual Admin & Config Tool,they are alright.
    About the Cluster Resources,can you pls specify what exactly do you mean by "Cluster Resources are running or not".
    I think if the application servers are stopped,then the Cluster resources shudnt come into play right?? Correct me if I am wrong.
    Kindly suggest what other steps I shud take.

  • Deploying a custom login module to the J2EE engine

    I have developed a custom login module, and want to deploy it to the SAP j2ee engine. How should I go about this ? I tried packaging it as a jar and then using the deploytool, went into user management to register the module, but when the module was invoked I got an error in the log saying "Cannot load a login module".
    The way I currently deploy it is packaged with the Example Calculator, and this works. I just add my 2 java files into the web module (in com.sap.examples.calculator.beans) and it gets packaged in the war file.
    Can anyone help with the "proper" way of deploying my module ?

    Once again - It is possible to deploy the login module as a library to the J2EE Engine; furthermore, this is the PREFERRED way to use login modules!

    Sorry, Brad, I've made a mistake here. You need to set a reference from the Security Provider Service to the library that contains the login module (not from the application). To do that at runtime, you'll have to use the Configuration Adapter service on the J2EE Engine. For a description of the procedure, see this page in the documentation: http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/dd/1e3a3e5069eb6ce10000000a114084/frameset.htm
    You need to provide additional entry of the following type in the security-provider.xml file:
    <reference type="library" strength="weak">
            Your-library-name-here
          </reference>
