Design breaks - box model problem

Hello all, again
I've got an additional problem in that my CSS design breaks
in IE6 but is
okay in FF. I know it's got to be something to do with the
box model but I
can't for the life of me figure out what's wrong.
My numbers add up - the main container is 819px, there are 4
divs, the first
is 610 px wide (top left), the second 209 (top right), the
third 610 (bottom
left) and the fourth 206 (bottom right) - this one smaller
for aesthetic
reasons.
The first div, has a 10px margin on the left but I've taken
this off the
total div width so the div width is 600px + 10px margin-left.
This is where
the problem is - when I reduce the div width to 590px, it
displays fine in
IE6 but is slightly out of whack in FF. I hope this is making
sense....
There's no doubt some glaring error here - I just can't see
it.

Thanks again
Judi

Thanks all
Murray: Your solution worked perfectly. So quick and simple.
Oh dear.
>The solution is to make each such element display:inline.
Nadia: You must get some pretty interesting colour
combinations.....
Thanks for pointing that out.
>I just wanted to point out that you need to declare a
background color to
>your pages - I'm seeing my
browsers' hotpink background instead of your intended white
Excavatorak: Thanks for your suggestions - would have worked
as well, I am
sure.
Cheers

• Adding template break box model and font

I have been working on this one for a few hours now and I can't figure it out. I am working with the HTML5 Boilerplate and recreating the home page for our company. When I do not include the template, the file works fine in IE. But the second I apply a template the whole page becomes broken and the IE box model applies and my font sizing gets messed up.
I have included a link to the files on a testing server, if this is not allowed, let me know and I can put up the code.
Excuse the cupcakes from FlexSlider, I have not yet finished that piece.
Working (no template): http://www.qa.mpay.com/index.asp
Not working (template): http://www.qa.mpay.com/copy.asp
Do I just need to rework my entire code so that it is more compliant with the IE Box Model qualifications, ie. div inside of a div with width on one and padding/margin on the other?

Alright here's the code for the one that's not working. After posting last night, I realized the links were probably only viewable internally.
UPDATE: Just added
after like I've seen you post about in another forum discussion. That seems to have fixed it. Why is that needed? Isn't it the html tag being opened in the line
What I mean by this, is why does it work fine in other browsers when that is missing, but it messes up with IE?
P.S. I'm starting to blame H5BP for poor documentation, but I'm learning a lot in the process.

• See the box model in Design View

This is probably a simple question but I can't seem to figure this out or find out about it in the help.sometines when I'm working on a page element the margnins and padding are shown in the design view window. most often they are not visable. How can I choose to show the margin and paddign of elements in the Design view? I have the View>visua laids>box model selected. It only shows up seemingly randomly.
I suspect there is a keyboard combination or something I need to invoke so I can have control over shwoing the margin and padding when I want to see it.
thanks for any help.

Should show up if you click the border of a container. Then if you want to see that actual measurements hover over the border again.

• Box model/none absolute positioning with flash

In recent years none-absolute positioning (or box model positioning) has become the norm with HTML/CSS
this is uselfull for dynamic functions which appear on an event (such as an object which appears when a button is clicked on or a error message that appears when a form box is given invalid input because it automatically inserts itself it the right place.)
One very important example of this is when you have a form which automatically produces an error message and the error message appears bellow the input area which caused it and the rest of the page is pushed down.
With none absolute positioning the developer does not need to worry about this.
But if the objects are given absolute position then it becomes a massive problem, the developer has to go about giving the objects differetn positions dependant on if dynamic objects appear or not
potentially the developer has to consider all possible variables, and code if statements which determine the position of all static objects for all possible variables which dynamic objects could take.
so does flash have a "none absolute positioning" solution to this problem.

Before you get all happy and pleased with yourself, APDivs or Layers seldom work well as a primary layout method. Here are some reasons why:
http://apptools.com/examples/pagelayout101.php
You're much better off using default CSS positioning (which is no positioning at all) along with CSS margins, padding and floats. If you don't believe me, check your page in non-IE browsers with increased/decreased text-sizes (zoom, text only).

• Inability to adjust Box Model Content Size Property in Studio Creator2

Re: Studio Creator2
I am trying to make my RadioButtonGroup smaller. I think my problem resides with not being able to reduce the Box Model content size [17,17] within the properties of the individual buttons. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Your template contains an IE Conditional Comment that is adding 30px of top padding to #sidebar1. This padding may required in older versions of IE but not IE9.
<!--[if IE]>
<style type="text/css">
/* place css fixes for all versions of IE in this conditional comment */
.twoColFixRtHdr #sidebar1 { padding-top: 30px; }
.twoColFixRtHdr #mainContent { zoom: 1; }
/* the above proprietary zoom property gives IE the hasLayout it needs to avoid several bugs */

<![endif]-->
To fix it, change [if IE] to [if lt IE 9]

• CSS layout box model?

Hi, I'm using Dreamweaver cs4. I downloaded a diablo 3
fansite kit from blizzard, and was looking at their code &
style sheets and such for reference while learning to use DIV to
layout new websites. I pretty much have the same DIV box going for
all the content in the middle. But when i click on their DIV box,
it shows margin on the left and the right, and while in design
view, automatically centers their DIV box.
I created a page, setup a div box 1000px wide, centered it,
and it does not give me a preview of it centered while in design
view, nor does it show me the margins & padding (displays
diagonal white transparant stripes where the padding & margins
goes). i made sure i clicked the "CSS Layout Box Model" in the
visual aid menu, but it does not want to work on my page, yet i can
turn it on and off on the fan site index page. How do i make it
work on my page?
Thx

Which page? Can we see the other one too?

• Flex-box model not correctly implemented in Dreamweaver CS5.5, pleas improve!

Hi all,
there is a good introduction to: Flexible Box Layout module
see: http://www.css3.info/introducing-the-flexible-box-layout-module/
I tried the same example in my new Version of Dreamweaver CS5.5
--> surprise: Dreamweaver CS5.5 cannot show in a correct manner a following div:

where css are:
.flex_box {
background: url('./img/box-model.png') no-repeat center center;
height: 180px;
margin-top: 16px;
width: 180px;
.flex_stretch {
display: -moz-box;
display: -webkit-box;
display: box;
-moz-box-align: stretch;
-webkit-box-align: stretch;
box-align: stretch;
.flex_vertical {
-moz-box-orient: vertical;
-webkit-box-orient: vertical;
box-orient: vertical;
CS5.5 can only strech in 1 direction, when shown as in a browser (German "ENTWURF").
In Firefox, sam is ok:
I need a correct representation of these boxes, when will there be an improvement??????????

• Designer 9i Process Model

A process step was erroneously deleted from my model but is still is in the repository. How can I put it back in the model as a process step. So far I have only been able to put it back in as a Global Process which will not work here! Designer will not let be do a drag and drop either. Help!!

After 4 hours of wrestling with Designer, I got the problem resolved. You must go into the Repository, select a new Parent function, and then you can drag and drop the function back into the Process Model. Afterwards, a requery of the FHD shows everything back in place.

• What is the best design pattern for this problem?

No code to go with the question. I am trying to settle on the best design pattern for the problem before I code. I want to use an Object Oriented approach.
I have included a basic UML diagram of what I was thinking so far.
Stated simply, I have three devices; Module, Wired Modem, and Wireless Modem.
In the Device Under Test parent class, I have put the attributes that are variable from device to device, but common to all of them.
In the child classes, I have put the attributes that are not variable to each copy of that device. The attributes are common across device types. I was planning to use controls in the class definition that have the data set to a default value, since it doesn't change for each serial number of that device. For example, a Module will always have a Device Type ID of 1. These values are used to query the database.
An example query would be [DHR].[GetDeviceActiveVersions] '39288', 1, '4/26/2012 12:18:52 PM'
The '1' is the device type ID, the 39288 is the serial number, and the return would be "A000" or "S002", for example.
So, I would be pulling the Serial Number and Device Type ID from the Device Under Test parent and child, and passing them to the Database using a SQL string stored in the control of the Active Versions child class of Database.
The overall idea is that the same data is used to send multiple queries to the database and receiving back various data that I then evaluate for pass of fail, and for date order.
What I can't settle on is the approach. Should it be a Strategy pattern, A Chain of Command pattern, a Decorator pattern or something else.
Ideas?

Good. At least you will not be smaking with a OPPer dOOPer hammer if I make some gramatical mistake.
You may want to look at this thread in the BreakPoint where i trie to help Cory get a handle on Dynamic Dispatching with an example of two classes that inherit from a common parent and invoke Over-ride VIs to do the same thing but with wildly varying results.
The example uses a Class of "Numeric" and a sibling class "Text" and the both implement an Add method.
It is dirt simple and Cory did a decent job of explaining it.
It just be the motivation you are looking for.

1. Bounce the Repository's DB Instance. Usually an indication
of RME errors.
2. Goto RAU and perform all of your maintenance
a. Compute Statistics
b. View Objects and Recompile all 'INVALID' objects
c. Clear temporary tables.
3. If you are reverse engineering with DBA privileges then you
are going to retrieve alot of uneccessary objects. Be explicit
in your retrieval.

You have an answer for the height issue, you may also be interested in this article that talks about cutting down on the stylesheet size... you have a lot of styles in your stylesheet that can really be trimmed down by using shorthand rules.

Hello,
These kinds of problems were reported before. Are you using the order by clause in your select statement? It seems to solve all the problems I've encountered of this sort.
