Desirable features in an enclosure

I've been shopping around for an enclosure, ostensibly for my 160GB backup HD (for which I harbor faint hopes that an enclosure might help me get around the 137 GB barrier with OS9 on a beige), but at some stage I might buy a DVD drive. Actually I am using the 160GBHD to archive files so it may easily end up being used for another drive. This is curently for my G3 beige with OS 9.2.2 but I imagine I may do more with OS X soon.
What are desirable features in an enclosure and where does one start paying too much for hype (and frills, like all the pretty lights)? The things I've noted so far are:
Dimensions. For a HD a 3.5" is okay, but with a 5.25" you have the potential for using optical drives. Might a bigger enclosure also run cooler with just a HD in it? The other advantage to a 5.25" is that several of them include the power source in the box, saving on power strip real estate and those dratted transformers.
Accessibility. If you're going to swap out drives then don't get the plastic kind with the strips down the side.
USB. USB1 vs USB2. Any good or bad chipsets for this? Most of the ones I've seen that mention a chipset say Cypress. I guess USB 1 is incredibly slow (so definitely Firewire) but it may be nice to have USB capability (vs. just Firewire) simply because more computers have USB and it could be used with those.
Firewire. FW1 vs 2. Browsing the discussions, it seems that the only truly reliable chipset for Macs is Oxford. Maybe Initio though I saw a negative post about that one too. Prolific seems to be prolific but got some knocks on this board.
Enclosure cooling. Plastic vs. aluminium (Al). Al housings generally don't have fans it seems. Is there enough conductive cooling? Is it best to go with Al housing AND a fan (or two fans as I have seen in one model) or is this overkill? I guess fans could be noisy so is it worth the cooling trade-off?
I've seen two models that have USB2 with Firewire1 Oxford 911 chipset, Al housing and fans (one was probably a Plumax though the vendor didn't say it, thoe other was some house brand). These run about $50 whereas the more basic models start around $35. Are there any notorious brands out there or just components that should be avoided?

Without a doubt- get one with an Oxford 911 chip in it. If you can afford it, a FW/USB2 combo is a good idea as well. I also prefer a case with a fan in it, although those I've bought without fans seem to work fine and drives aren't nearly as sensitive to heat as in days past, nor do they generate as much heaty as they used to.

  • Desired feature: mirror displays on hide during presentation

When I'm doing my presentations, I mix and match between a slide deck and live coding demos.
For the live coding, I need my laptop's display mirrored to the projector, so I can see what I'm typing.
For the presentation, I'd prefer to have the presenter display, i.e., with reminders about the time and what's on the next slide or build.
Currently, you can have one or the other. I can hide ("h") my presentation, and then turn on mirroring from the desktop before live coding. But I have to remember to turn off mirroring before I return to Keynote (if I forget, it appears to revert to no presenter notes).
Ideally, Keynote would have an option to manage desktop mirroring for me.

    Welcome to the Forum.
Yours is a very good suggestion. I urge you to post this as a "desired feature" for future upgrades on the Keynote Feedback Forum: http://www.apple.com./feedback/keynote.html
    Good luck.

  • Parental control - desired features

I posted the message below to apple TV feedback page and I though I'd share it with you too, and get a penny for your thoughts; perhaps even brainstorm a bit more on the parental control issue, because WE (parents with young children) need a better and easier parental control...
    quote:
"With great power comes great responsibility"... bringing so much digital content to the living room space: movies, music, youtube videos, etc is a quantum leap in our digital entertainment, but this space we share with our young children, thus they need to be effectively protected. Doing this elegantly as well is an art. We want to be able to filter out explicit content (or access to certain rated material, or certain services) easily, securely and hassle free. As of now (version 2.0.2) I can think of TWO reasons why I absolutely don't want the parental control ON (despite the fact that this leaves my young children exposed):
    - First, the password has to be enter EVERY time I access something restricted. You would say that this is quite normal, however I'd say it's quite a hassle. If I am the adult ready to access restricted content, I have the option to either turn off the parental control temporarily.. with the hassle of having to set the pin again after I am done... or, I have to enter the pin every time. If i access the restricted material now.. it makes sense that I will also be the one accessing the next restricted material in 5 minutes from now. It's a reasonable time-locality principle. Apple TV should be "smart" enough to know that I just entered a pin to access something a minute ago.. thus not needing to ask for the pin again. This smartness doesn't have to be necessarily implicit.. it could be explicit: apple tv can ask me for how long should it remember the entered pin.
The solution that I have in mind is a Comcast-like parental control that inhibits the parental control for a period of time. Say, i am planning to use the apple tv for an hour.. then I should be able to inhibit the parental control for that given time. This way, I won't be asked to enter the pin over and over again for everything that is restricted. The implementation that I have in mind is: whenever I want to access something restricted.. i will enter the pin.. then instead of just selecting DONE.. I can have the options to unlock for 1 hour.. 2 hours, 4 hours.. and once. These could be easily accessible via the up/down/left/right buttons on the remote (or browse-able)
    - The second BIG BIG reason why i don't want the parental control ON.. is that the pin is VISIBLE! If we are all planing to watch something (buy a movie, which is a restricted service, let's say) I will have to enter the pin in visible for my young children to see. Of course this pin will have to be changed later on to something else to make sure the parental control stays what it's meant to be.. a parental control. What good it is a parental control with a public pin?
Solution: instead of visible password.. you can allow the option to click the five buttons left/right/up/down/center in a specific order. How many permutation of 5 buttons can we have? 5! = 12*3*45 = 120, but wait... we can press a button multiple times.. so the total number of codes we can enter is.. whatever you want. e.g. if the codes should have 4 "digits", the number of combinations is 5^4 = 625. Anyway, you get the idea. You should absolutely find a way to replace the visible pin with an invisible one.. using the key combinations is one such solution.
Looking more into the future... a biometric sensor on the remote that will unlock the restricted material instantly by just pressing the finger (fingerprint) on the remote would be awesome. Perhaps this won't make it to the next apple tv remote iteration but it is something that apple is aiming for... ultimate simplicity.
Also an accelerometer based remote would also make the browsing the apple tv content a LOT faster and smoother than clicking buttons (wii-like remote perhaps?). Clicking and holding buttons (quite hard to press for my taste) to go down to the bottom of a 200 song list is quite painful.
Also.. one more thing.. it would be nice to have a HOME button similar to the iPhone home.. One click and i'm back to the main menu. Perhaps a double click on the menu button? I hate having to click 5 times to get out of a music location to get to the main menu. Quicker access please!??
all the best and hope to see these new features soon, so we can ALL enjoy our newly purchased Apple TV.
    Thanks.

  • Business Process Modelling Language Desirable Features

    Hi All,
It will be quite interesting to see what features the BPX community would want to be in the “Visual” Business Process Modelling *** programming language which on one end use self-contained applications that use Web services as activities that implement business functions and on the other  has interactions with other J2EE like web components .
For example I would like to see something developed by SAP where the Business Process mapping can be done with a strict protocol in ARIES so that applications can be built in the Visual composer and the BPX can visually do the one or more of the following
    1.     On Screen “chain End Chain ” valdiation
    2.     Loop conditions
    3.     Branching conditions
    4.     Variable initialization
    5.     Web service message preparation
The idea being the BPX can generate a running prototype for pattern based processes through grahhical interfaces and unless something really typical needs to be done, the coding can be eliminated.
    Taking an example:
On a simple sales order if the stock is not adequate a purchase order needs to be fired.
The Business process mapping of the same can be done in ARIES where some available components (business objects like sale order) from R3 etc are available for modeling.
If this process is to be web enabled then one can use the business process modeling to develop a quick application in Visual Composer where one can use ESA for Sale Order as a Model and build screens based on that. The screen flow can also be built in Visual Composer to take you to through the various tabs.
The data flow across the various tabs also can be done through the component controller and the BPX should be able to map that visually.
The business event (Stock < Sale order quantity ) can be handled through a branching condition  and web service message preparation to either generate a email message or fire a purchase order (handled in XI and exposed in one common place of the Business Process modeling Tool).
Marilyn : thanks for the offer of acting as a interface between the SAP development team and some of us with the wishlist. I would certainly love to be involved in the epochal development

Why leaving the tool? Why ARIS and VC and CAF and many more different tools?
I would prefer a tool that gives me - depending from the user - different flavors and views of my model. A tool that in one flavor allows me to define the process on a higher level, then in another flavor allows me to implement the application(s) of the process in a non-coding approach and then a flavor that allows me to pimp the application(s) with a coding approach.
All three flavors are working on the very same model. The different flavors immediately see the changes done by other flavors. A kind of realtime modelling.
The tool itself is not necessarily a single-environment approach, but can have one flavor running in the browser, the other one in a locally installed IDE. But still all of them use the same terminology. A data service here ,is a data service there, Business Object here is a Business Object there (and not a bean or a class or entity service etc.). That also would allow to have the different modeling users naturally move between the flavors, with a hard core programmer also being able to move to the Business Process Modeling tool, and the BPX also being able to write a small conversion routine.
Perhaps the proper term is "BP & App Suite", which serves all types of modelers involved: Business Process Modelers, Business Process Experts, Developers.
In the SAP world these tools could be: ARIS, Visual Composer, DevStudio/ABAP Workbench/.NET.
Today this is not the case: we have more than 200 tools (and we say we are not a tools company) and not really an exchange of models between those tools. Not to mention the different terminology...

  • FEATURE REQUEST: Enhanced Texture Options in FW

Recently, a forum user was asking how to change the color of a texture in Fireworks to red or blue. In particular, he/she was struggling with attempting to apply a texture to a white object, and it wasn't showing up.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1006694?tstart=0
The question got me thinking about textures, how they're created and how they're applied. Textures are a unique and distinctive feature of Fireworks. On the one hand, the interface for textures is very simple to use and almost magical; on the other hand, it's surprisingly limited. The concept is great, but the implementation seems only half-baked.
With this in mind, I'd like to suggest a few simple ways that textures could be made more fluid and versatile in Fireworks.
    First, a little background...
    WHAT IS A TEXTURE?
In the world of Fireworks, a texture is basically a type of pattern that's applied to an object. However, unlike a pattern fill, textures include transparency and integrate with the existing fill content (color, gradient or pattern). They're suggestive of textures in the real world, which are often tactile and defined visually by light and shadow.
Texture graphics are most commonly grayscale ("black and white") in GIF or PNG format. Applied within the application, the graphics are converted "on the fly" to white-on-transparency. If the Transparent option is checked, the graphic is converted into a sort of mask, making the "textured" areas invisible instead of white.
    And that's about it.
So what if you'd like to apply a dark texture to a white object? Sorry, it can't be done. What if you'd like to apply a texture in color? It can't be done. What if you'd like to reverse or invert the pattern of the texture? Can't be done.
Well, in fact, these things can be done, but not directly. They require workarounds such as cloning the object and placing the clone above or beneath the original, applying textures as pattern fills (instead of as textures) and adding effects like Color Fill, Invert, and Convert to Alpha, or editing the texture file directly, saving out a new copy, etc. In short, there are unintuitive ways to accomplish these goals that lead to bloated effects lists and layers or that require extra time and care.
    HOW CAN TEXTURES BE IMPROVED?
First of all, does it make any sense that textures are applied exclusively in white? Not really. In the real world, a texture can be defined not just by light but by shadow. And even shadows can have color. This means that, at minimum, it would make sense to allow for the application of a texture in black, and, at maximum, in any chosen color.
Secondly, textures are relative. They represent change to an existing surface. Sometimes, it might make sense to highlight the texture itself; other times, the surface around the texture. This means that being able to quickly reverse the figure-ground relationship of a texture would be a very handy feature.
With the above concerns in mind, I've devised three 'user interface' scenarios, presented here in order of most conservative to most extreme. The first scenario is the least powerful but still doubles the number of possible outcomes (compared to the existing interface). The second scenario may be the most logical of the bunch and represents a modest evolution of the existing interface, while increasing the number of potential outcomes even further. The third scenario allows for the application of any color to a texture but also represents the biggest change to the existing interface; that said, it's also quite compact.
    Scenario 1: Invert option
The idea here is simply to add an Invert checkbox to the existing options. Checking this option would convert white to black, allowing for the application of dark textures to white or light-colored objects. In "Transparent" mode, this option would invert or reverse the figure-ground relationship of the existing texture.
Scenario 2: Dropdown menu plus Reverse option
Here, the Transparent checkbox is replaced by a dropdown menu that includes 3 mutually exclusive options: White, Black, or Transparent. Checking the "Reverse" option would invert the figure-ground relationship of the texture. This scenario allows for 6 possible outcomes in place of the existing 2, and is actually more logical than the first scenario, which conflates two options.
Scenario 3: Color picker plus Reverse option
Here, the Transparent checkbox is removed, and in its place, a color chip/palette is added to allow for the selection of any color to be applied to a texture. (Choosing Fill: None would create Transparency.) Again, a "Reverse" option would invert the figure-ground relationship of the texture. This scenario differs most from the existing interface but is quite compact and allows for the greatest number of outcomes.
    SO WHAT CAN YOU DO?
I've submitted a feature request to Adobe's official site:
    https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
When it comes to bugs and/or feature requests, every vote counts. If you care about this issue, I encourage you to submit your own feature request to the above URL, referencing this post if desired. Feel free to copy and paste the feature request below or write your own. (Be aware that there is a 2,000 character limit to the "issue description" of a bug report or feature request, and the following report is very close to that maximum.)
    FEATURE REQUEST
    Product name: Fireworks
    Product Version: 12.0.0.236
    Product language: English
    *******Enhancement / FMR*********
Brief title for your desired feature: Enhanced texture controls, including the ability to apply textures in black and/or color (instead of white), and the ability to reverse or invert texture.
How would you like the feature to work? Three possible implementations have been outlined in this forum posting:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1042206?tstart=0
The basic scenarios are as follows:
SCENARIO 1: An additional "Invert" option. Checking this option would convert white to black, allowing for the application of dark textures to white or light-colored objects. In "Transparent" mode, this option would invert or reverse the figure-ground relationship of the existing texture. This scenario would allow for 4 options in place of the existing 2.
SCENARIO 2: Replace Transparent checkbox with a dropdown menu (White-Black-Transparent) and a "Reverse" checkbox. The dropdown menu offers 3 mutually exclusive options, while "Reverse" inverts the figure-ground relationship of the texture in each case. This scenario would allow for 6 options in place of the existing 2.
SCENARIO 3: Replace Transparent checkbox with a color chip/palette and a "Reverse" checkbox. The color palette would allow for the application of a texture in any color, while choosing Fill: None would create Transparency. This scenario would allow for the greatest number of options.
Why is this feature important to you? Textures are unique to Fireworks and potentially very useful, but their implementation is incomplete. The use of 'white only' means that textures cannot be applied to a white object. Inverting a texture or applying a texture in color requires advanced workarounds and can lead to bloat. The suggested options would make the feature exponentially more powerful and intuitive.

Thanks, Jim! It is a very blog-like post. (I still haven't gotten around to starting a blog but keep thinking I should.)
I figured the clearer and more thought-out the presentation, the greater the likelihood it might get implemented. Also, I was originally stuck on Scenario 1 as a solution, and writing this helped me see other options.

  • What Do You think of My Feature Requests?

Hi, I submitted the following Feature Requests to the Premiere CC feature requests form.
I think Premiere CC keeps improving but there are some things that really annoy me.   And below are some of my requests.   I'd love to know if any of these requests are in error - if I'm actually missing something.
    Thanks for checking these out!
    *******Enhancement / FMR*********
Brief title for your desired feature:
    AUTO-PATCHING
How would you like the feature to work?
When I select a Track Target - such as V1 Target -  the Source patch should follow along. For example, if I select V1, then the V1 Source should automatically move next to V1
Why is this feature important to you?
This saves time and saves an extra, unnecessary step of having to move the Source patch.
This makes editing faster and more intuitive.
    *******Enhancement / FMR*********
Brief title for your desired feature:
Increase/Decrease Volume using Keyboard for MULTIPLE CLIPS at once (between In and Out)
How would you like the feature to work?
    1. Set in and out in the Timeline
    2. Make sure Audio Targets are set for the tracks you want to affect
    3.  Press your keyboard shortcuts for increasing or decreasing volume
Result: All Audio volumes between In and Out go up or down by the same amount.
Why is this feature important to you?
This saves a lot of time. Currently, I have to copy and paste Volume attributes and that wastes time and is not as intuitive.
    *******Enhancement / FMR*********
Brief title for your desired feature:
Select Nearest Edit Keyboard Commands Should Select All Nearest Edits on All TARGETED TRACKS, even if staggered
How would you like the feature to work?
    1. Position Playhead near the edits you want selected (for Trim)
1B: Make sure the Track Targets for the tracks you want to affect are highlighted
    2. Press the Keyboard Shortcut for Select Nearest Edit…
Result: Even if the edit points don't all line up on the same frame, Premiere should select (with a Roller, etc) ALL edit points NEAREST to the playhead on Tracks which have their Target buttons selected.
How it works now:  Now Premiere only select those edit points that line up together the same frame.
Why is this feature important to you?
How Premiere currently works wastes a lot of time. It currently requires the editor to manually click and add other edit selections.
Currently, Premiere does not actually select all the edit points on SELECTED TRACKS.
    *******Enhancement / FMR*********
Brief title for your desired feature:
REMOVE EFFECT - ALLOW US TO CHOOSE WHICH EFFECTS
How would you like the feature to work?
    1. Highlight one or more Clips to select them.
    2.  Press the Remove Effects Keyboard Shortcut
What should happen: Premiere should present you with a window that allows you to check the effects you want to remove or uncheck the effects you don't want to remove.
Why is this feature important to you?
This is very important because often I have a remove just one effect on a large group of effects.  I don't have the time - it would take forever - to go through each individual clip and eliminate that particular effect in the Effect Controls panel.
    *******Enhancement / FMR*********
Brief title for your desired feature:
A Paste Insert should move the IN/OUT marks down the Timeline, just like the clips
How would you like the feature to work?
    1. Set an In an Out point somewhere in the timeline.
2  In the timeline, after copying some material,  PASTE INSERT, the clips in front of a whole bunch of other clips (also earlier than the In/Out marks)
    What Should Happen:
Material AND In/Out marks should shift to the right to maintain sync.
    What currently happens:
Premiere correctly shifts the Clips that follow the pasted material, Down the Timeline, to maintain sync.  However, Premiere keeps the In/Out Marks where they are.
Why is this feature important to you?
I often copy  material that's between In/Out marks and then go earlier in the Timeline and paste Insert that material. But when I jump back to the In point (Go to In) the In/Out marks haven't move and so I have to find my place in the material all over again.
It shouldn't work this way. It wastes time. And other NLEs don't do it this way. They shift the In/Out marks.

Nice requests. Just trying to be helpful here:
Re REMOVE EFFECT - ALLOW US TO CHOOSE WHICH EFFECTS
I agree - this could be quite useful. However, It sounds like using adjustment layers may be helpful for your workflow also?
Re: Increase/Decrease Volume using Keyboard for MULTIPLE CLIPS at once (between In and Out)
I've stopped using volume altogether now, and instead use 'Gain' mapped to "g" key in premiere keyboard layout. SUPER useful, for all the reasons you describe. I've never used I/O marks, but you can make big selections of clips, or a whole track's. Volume controls in Premiere, as far as I can tell, caps at +6DB for some reason. I routinely have to go much higher than that. also there is a very intelligent gain options screen that lets you bump your selected clips relatively by +/- DB levels; or set absolute values; OR set normalization targets. I LOVE IT, and its all I use now.
It seems to me that the audio component of Premiere if far more sophisticated than any other NLE I've used  [ Avid MC, FCP...]. My only caveat is that volume and gain are not integrated across all methodologies. For example, you can have a volume adjustment on the clip, the track, and gain adjustments on the clip all operating independently- its alot to keep track of on projects that get passed back and forth between different editors with different methods!

  • Help Needed to Request a Feature

    Hello folks!
There is a feature I have been awaiting paitently for years,
ever since Conditional Build Tags came on the scene in RoboHelp.
Adobe has gotten closer than any of its predecessors at providing
this functionality, but just this week, I finally heard verbal
confirmation from Adobe that it doesn't yet do what I need it to
    do.
I am appealing to you for help. It seems that the only thing
that will motivate Adobe to provide this (or any) functionality is
a preponderance of user requests on their Feature Request form. I
have already filled this out more than once over the years, to no
    avail.
I have detailed below, in 1989 characters, just what I want
and why I want it. If you are moved to also request this
    functionality, please go to
    www.adobe.com/go/wish
select Feature Request, and if you want, simply copy and
paste my text below into the form. There is a 2000-character limit,
so I have tweaked the wording to make it all fit.
I have been drooling over this functionality for literally
YEARS, because I must maintain 5 separate projects in order to
provide my programmers with all of the different outputs (in
essence, different languages) that we need.
    Thanks a bundle!
    Marjorie
    *******Enhancement / FMR*********
Brief title for your desired feature:
Apply Conditional Build Tags (CBTs) to Topic Titles Appearing
    in Search Results
How would you like the feature to work?
    Concise problem statement:
On all outputs, the Search Results list is being populated
    without my CBTs being applied.
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1. Create English & French CBTs.
    2. Apply English & French CBTs to topic content,
including to the Topic Title, when displayed in the Design Editor
pane. (This must be done in the Design Editor pane, because CBTs
are not accepted by RH7 in the Topic Properties in the Topic Title
    field.)
    3. Create 2 new duplicate layouts, which use the English
    & French CBTs.
    4. Generate outputs for both English & French (WebHelp,
FlashHelp, HTMLHelp--it does not matter which one).
    5. View the French output & go to the Search tab.
    Results:
    6. Search for a French topic title. The Help file does indeed
find the appropriate topic. However, the Search Results list
displays the ENGLISH topic title. If I display the associated topic
in the right-hand pane, I do see the French topic title there, as
    well as the French content.
    Desired results:
    7. The Search Results list should display the FRENCH topic
    title in the left-hand pane.
Why is this feature important to you?
No matter which language, our application is going to call
the same specific URL to fulfill a Help request. I use the Map ID
number in the Topic ID field. When I generate WebHelp output, each
topic will have a "Name.htm" which appears as "MapIDNumber.htm".
For instance, "388.htm" is the filename on WebHelp output for the
topic whose Topic Title is "View" in English & "Afficher" in
    French.
This feature is important because RH7 will not allow the same
Map ID number or the same Topic ID to be used on more than one
source topic. I need to be able to apply the same Topic ID to
whatever language condition I want, and therefore, my one source
topic must contain all languages with their CBTs applied.

Hello, and thank you all so much for your interest in my
    quest!
Since I have much to address, I will quote each person and
then reply to their comments. (Ooops! I have so much to say, I must
address each of your posts separately.)

    Peter,
It's a bug in the sense that the output is not fully in
    French, in every way possible.

Yes, you are right. In the Design Editor, I am editing the
topic title where the Heading style is applied. I suppose the
correct term for this item is indeed "Topic Heading."

In actuality, I use the Advanced button on the Layout to
Define my CBT Expression. I choose to INCLUDE my desired CBT by
Adding the Tag for a particular output.
For English, I would choose to INCLUDE my English CBT; for
French, I would choose to INCLUDE my French CBT.
In my world, there are multiple English names for the very
same widget. Therefore, I use multiple English conditions to
deterime which name should appear for a particular widget. I mark
the rest of the text with ALL of my English conditions, and mark
the French text with my French conditions. (I MUST mark the English
as English, simply because my source topic also contains French
text. This is the only way to leave the English out of the French
    outputs.)
Now, imagine that I want to output just one of my English
conditions. If I were to use Exclude for all of the other English
conditions, then the very text that is marked for all of my English
condtions would never make it into my output.
I have tested this, and found that if I simply include only
the desired CBT, it works beautifully. I don't get the French, and
I do get all of the appropriate text for my indicated English
    condition.

That's what Adobe tried to tell me to do. I explained to them
the issue with the same URL being used in all of my conditional
    outputs.
For instance, I want Help to come up and display the exact
topic whose name in English is "View." This topic has been assigned
a Map ID of 388. I have also edited the Topic ID to use the number
    388. When I generate WebHelp output, you see this topic generated
    as "388.htm."
Now, in my French output, this topic would have a different
title appearing--in French, it would be called "Afficher." My
programmers have our application programmed to call "388.htm,"
regardless of what language is running.
RH source topics cannot use the same topic ID on more than
one topic. Because of this RH limitation, I must put the source
text for both languages inside only one source topic: the topic
    whose Topic ID is 388.

they use to populate their Search Results list. He sounded
intrigued by my idea, and said he would tell their engineers about
    it.
The only other alternative I can imagine at this point is to
allow CBTs to be applied to the Topic Title text. I have even
attempted to manually apply this in the HTML Editor pane. The
trouble is, when I switch away to the Design Editor pane and then
back to the HTML Editor pane, all of the CBTs that I manually
applied have been lost--and it doesn't matter if I Saved first!
They are simply discarded by RH.

big bucks to solve--establishing workarounds for the technologies
    at work.
I have to believe it's solvable, because, as I have told the
Adobe folks, their competitor MadCap had the exact same issue with
one of their early versions, and they even told me: "The Search
Results list is being populated before the conditions are being
applied." I called them on it, they worked to solve it, and they
ultimately did solve it in Flare by reworking one of their *.DLL
    files.
Maybe I'm comparing apples to oranges, but I still have faith
that this can be solved. My only problem is how long it is taking
to get this issue onto their radar. I have been requesting this
    functionality for over 1.5 years!

I am guessing that where Map IDs are used for the call, they
maintain two projects so that the "same" topic can have the same
    ID.
I already do this in RH X5. I maintain five separate
projects, which contain about a dozen different conditions.
However, I have never yet used CBT functionality on the text
in my 5 projects, because my source remains in Word to this day,
and only RH HTML even comes close to giving me the conditional
output I require. In today's Help files, our users must read and
find the text that applies to their condition, because they are
often presented with text like so:
    Condition A
    * If you are Condition A, then the software does this...
    Condition B
    * If you are Condition B, then the software does this...
    Condition C
    * If you are Condition C, then the software does this...
    Condition D
    * If you are Condition D, then the software does this...
    Condition E
    * If you are Condition E, then the software does this...
I was actually asked to split out our conditions in this
manner by managers at my company.
Now, if I were a user, I would HATE having to read
    documentation like this.
We actually split out our conditions in this way in 2002!,
anticipating that eHelp or (later) Macromedia or (now) Adobe would
provide the CBT functionality so I could hide all of the other
conditions, and give my users a Help file customized specifically
for their business line. It's now 6 years and counting...
Since I will have some major prep work to do in order to
import my text with minimum pain into RH 7 HTML, I just won't do it
until or unless I can prove that I will be able to output all of my
conditions flawlessly. It doesn't pay my company to do the import
and cleanup if we can't produce the product we are required to give
    our users.

  • Feature request: additional setting in mobile network preferences

In my Z3 Compact i have the options to select the following combinations for which network techonology the phone should prefer for its connection (my phone is in danish, so the exact wording might be a little incorrect):
    WCDMA only
    GSM Only
    WCDMA (preferred)/GSM
    LTE(Preferred)/WCDMA/GSM
Absent from this list is the possibility to select "LTE(Preferred)/WCDMA", similar to the last one, but without GSM as a possible fallback. I suggest adding this option in a future software release.
The reason this would be a desirable feature would be to avoid the lower security of GSM networks. Recently several IMSI catchers have been discovered in the Scandinavian countries, and the ability ser the phone to avoid using GSM would provide a way to guard against these. A current workaround is to use the "WCDMA only" setting, but this will be at the cost of not using LTE.

    Hi Chris,
Thanks for writing to us. We will forward the request to the engineering team working on Edge Inspect.
    Regards,
    Saurabh

Brief title for your desired feature: Table Sort
How would you like the feature to work?
Have a sort icon show in table headers and be able to choose multiple columns to sort the table by.
Why is this feature important to you?
Apartment directories often have the same info twice, once sorted by Apartment Number then Last Name then First Name, and a second table is used sorted by Last Name then First Name then Apartment Number.
Having to create two import files with the sort criteria and import each as a table then format each table is inefficient. Better to import single table, format, then make as many duplicates as necessary and change sorting within InDesign.

I'm afraid sending me to the same page that I am reporting as having a problem is no solution. My fault since I didn't specify Adobe - Feature Request/Bug Report Form as where I was getting the results I mentioned, but the title of my post should have made it easy to make that connection

Yes, I used the real form on the real web page and got nothing useful for my effort… and that hasn't changed yet.

  • Feature Request:  Auto-save in Background

Here's a feature request I've submitted.  If you agree, please submit your request to:
    http://www.adobe.com/go/wish/
    *******Enhancement / FMR*********
Brief title for your desired feature:
    Background Auto Save
How would you like the feature to work?
Auto-save would work just as it does today, except it would work as a background process, as it already does in Photoshop (without the Autosave popup getting in the way of the edit).
Why is this feature important to you?
The current autosave feature is terrifice and expected in any application today, but the current autosave popup dialog is useless.  It only has a "Cancel" button.  What's the point?  I can't imagine when I would ever want to cancel an auto-save.  And let's say I *did* want to cancel.  The dialog is only on screen for a second or so.  That's not enough time for user interaction, but it is just enough time for my work to be interupted, and for me to potentially hit the enter key as I go to Render something at precisely the same time.

    Hi cscouper2013,
Thanks for taking the time to point out that my BSODs might be a problem with my RAM!  Yes, I'll test it with the program you mention.
    cscooper2013 wrote:
While I'm thinking of it, too.  Sometimes Premiere will do an auto save only moments after I've done a hard save.  That also seems like something to address in the next auto save feature update.  If I have my autosave increment set to 5 minutes, then it seems to me there's no need to do an autosave for another 5 minutes after my last manual save.
I fully agree!  That's something I requested during the CS5 beta program.  I requested that every time a user does a manual save, the Autosave reset its counter.  So for example, if the delay is 10 minutes between auto saves, and the user does a manual save two minutes before the next scheduled autosave, the autosave counter resets to 10 more minutes.  But with the better solution of the current project constantly being saved after each edit, as Jim suggested, this feature wouldn't even be needed anymore.
MonkeyEatsMonkey wrote:If Premiere could "borrow" that functionality, while still retaining a "save as" option for versioning, I feel like we'd have the best of both worlds.  It would even make dynamic linking more seamless, since changes wouldn't require saving. Any thoughts from the community on this?
That would be a perfect solution IMO!  And yes, retaining the 'Save As' option would be very important!
I also like the idea of automatic versioning/backups (could be renamed to 'versions' since with a constantly saved project file, automatic 'backups' would no longer be necessary.
To resume, based on what has been discussed in this thread, I believe these would be the ideal saving options in Premiere:
Autosaving of every edit in the background without slowing down editing performance (as suggested by Jim).
Ability to create a user defined number of automatic backup versions, by setting maximum number of versions and time intervals (as is currently the case with Premiere).
In other words, the current project file would constantly be updated as the user edits.  The automatic backups/versions would be created at user defined intervals.
Users would retain the ability to create a copy of the current project at any moment through the 'Save As' and 'Save a Copy' commands that already exist in Premiere.
Pop-up Auto-save dialogue boxes and the 'Save' command would be a thing of the past!
IMO, this would truly give us the best of both words as MonkeyEastMonkey suggests: constant saving as per FCPX, with the comprehensive versioning options Premiere currently offers.
    Anything missing?

  • After Effects Editable text: Feature refinement request

Not sure if anyone else out there uses this relatively recent feature in Premiere?
Within AE, in your comp settings, there is a new check box to allow unlocked text layers to be editable within Premiere.
This is a great feature that seems inspired by the identical feature set in Apple's deceased Final Cut Studio- allowing Motion Projects to have text edited and then rendered directly within FCP.
One of my clients has a facility that migrated to CC 2 years ago, and the introduction of this feature in CC came none to soon for us- as we had become quite dependent on it for our all our show's packaging graphics, lower thirds/ name keys etc.
Anyhow- enough backstory already! I love this feature, but the inability to change font size, kerning etc is nearly a deal breaker. Instead I've had to make 3x the templates in AE, with small, med, large font sizes- but this does not give line by line control.
I'm hopeful that the great team over at Adobe can buff up this feature to its full potential- maybe if the idea generates enough traffic it will happen sooner than later?
Here is a feature request I just submitted today. Please do the same if you'd like this functionality asap!
[Bellow are some screen grabs from Premiere, and of the disturbed tomb of FCP7-RIP]
    *******Enhancement / FMR*********
Brief title for your desired feature:
AE Editable text: refinements to this great feature.
How would you like the feature to work?
Give the user in premiere broader control of the text layout. Font size is the #1 issue, but Kerning, tracking would be great too.
Why is this feature important to you?
I work at a facility that has utilized Apple's hugely successful FCP studio round tripping of Motion templates for all "Name Keys/ lower 3rds" and other video packaging elements. Having happily switched to CC, we've begun using the existing feature, but have issues building robust templates that can accommodate larger variation of character count. In FCP, we had font size, and tracking controls of motion templates with editable text enabled.
Great work on this feature! I'm just hoping to get more usefulness out of it

    I know right?
I just built an extra 4 AE templates to try and mitigate this issue, but its not a graceful solution   6 templates to maintain and update instead of two [ the right and left justified versions].
    Also in the process I found a little UI bug that would be great to solve 'while you're up' :}
When you enter a string of text that is 'too long', the text box breaks, and is very difficult to use.
Where I work, we are rolling out new graphics packaging for our broadcast series, and I'm pushing to use the AE text editing function to up our game graphics wise- even though I get the sense its going to bite me in the a$$ at some point- probably during a deadline :/
I'd love to have font size and tracking controls ASAP, SVP .

  • Premiere Pro CC Feature Request: Shortcut for 'Close Other Timeline Panels'

I'm about to post a feature request, but wanted to see if anyone else is interested in this request too. Adobe told me that getting support on the forum first is a good way to push the request through.
    Here's the very simple FR:
    *******Enhancement / FMR*********
Brief title for your desired feature:
Keyboard Shortcut for 'Close Other Timeline Panels'
How would you like the feature to work?
It was a great touch to add this contextual menu item to Premiere Pro CC, but it's a little clunky without being able to assign a keyboard shortcut to it.
It's usage would simply close every other Timeline Panel except the active one upon pressing the shortcut.
The default could be something not currently in use like Ctrl+Cmd+W (since CMD+W closes the active panel), but customisable in the Keyboard Shortcuts panel.
Why is this feature important to you?
This is something I have to do very frequently while editing, and since I (and many others) edit largely with the keyboard, a shortcut would be very useful and speed up workflow just a tiny bit.
Anyone else interested in this (admittedly fairly boring) feature request, let me know!
    Thanks!

Thanks for the support and video Kevin!
cscooper2013: I totally agree with you, I can't see any reason why any action should be exluded from having a shortcut. I've submitted this simple request because I feel like it's more likely to get done on it's own.
Maybe make a separate FR for that?

  • Posting Feature Requests for others to Copy/Paste

I recently posted a Feature Request I sent to Adobe for another member to copy/paste as his own FR since he liked the suggestion (see the FR below).
After doing so, I got the idea that we could all do this: copy/paste FRs we send to Adobe into threads on this forum to help each other support the idea with similar requests, or even copy/paste the FR as our own.  With limited resources and time, there's only so many requests Adobe can implement in every new version.   That why it's so important that new features the Premiere Pro team invests their hard work and time on be the tools that would benefit the greatest number of editors.  The more people back up certain ideas, the more likely they'll be implemented sooner than later.
There's power in numbers, so how about using this forum to share our best ideas and make it easier for others to add their voice of support?  It's great that Adobe provides us with a way to send them feedback, but it's too bad that it's a one-way conversation with very little, if any, dialogue back and forth between the submitter and Adobe.  That's why I thought it would be great to bring more of that potential dialogue here, where we can share ideas and support the creation of an ever better Premiere Pro!
If you've never posted a FR or BR (Bug Report) before, you can easily join the effort to make Premiere Pro become all that it can be, here: www.adobe.com/go/wish
    Comments?  Ideas?  Please share!
Here's the FR I pasted in another thread, as an example.
    *******Enhancement / FMR*********
Brief title for your desired feature:  Drag&Drop Modified clips into Project Window
How would you like the feature to work?
Ability to Drag&Drop clips with effects, motion settings, keyframes and/or markers back into the Project Window from the Timeline for later use.
Why is this feature important to you?
The Project Window is far better than Sequences for storing/organizing modified clips for future use, since it is:
    Searchable
    Sortable
Viewable in Icon and List views
Full of helpful metadata columns such as 'Video/Audio Usage'
Foolproof in that the original sequence can be deleted without losing any created subclips
Given these advantages, why only allow us to store modified clips in Sequences? Please fix this by allowing users to Drag&Drop clips from the Timeline to the Project Window while preserving all of their modifications (effects, keyframes, motion settings and/or markers).

    Comments?  Ideas?  Please share!
As it has already been discussed in this thread (and duplicated threads are not allowed in Adobe Forums), the aforementioned feature request is mainly based on the false statement that an editor can either store raw clips in the Project panel or modified clip in the timeline. That's false because an editor can nest modified clip right in the timeline and the nested sequence will be automatically stored in the Project panel, turning into a regular reusable asset.
Unfortunately, the OP, as was also outlined in the duplicated thread, carefully avoids any mentioning this ability, which becomes your second nature if you use After Effects (which is unlike FCP is a part of Adobe Suite).
However, since the OP asks for sharing ideas, I do not hesitate to do this once again. Here is the feature request intended to improve the usability of such PrPro assets as 'Sequences' without breaking existing workflow:
    *******Managing Sequences*******
It would be nice if managing capabilities for such assets as 'Sequences' were extended with the following features:
    - similar live thumbnail view, which was introduced for footages in CS6. A small 'Sequence' badge in the top left corner of the thumbnail would allow to differentiate between sequences and clips;
    - enabled metadata and ability to handle them like for any other regular asset;
    - ability to remove empty audio or video tracks completely, i.e. get a sequence as an Audio or Video asset only;
    - pop-up dialog box on hitting 'Nest' command, which would allow to give meaning name instead of default 'Nested Sequence XXX', contain 'Delete All Empty Tracks' checkbox and a button for advanced dialog for logging metadata right on a brand new asset creation.
These features would improve an ability to exploit sequences as reusable assets and preserve consistent applications behaviour throughout the Suite instead of breaking existing workflow by inventing new FCP style 'subclip with effects' type of asset. See this discussion in PrPro Forum for some more details:

  • Opinions On Several Feature Requests

    Hello,
For starters this is not a problem I can't solve in Premiere but more so a request of your opinions on Feature Requests that I've recently submitted. Just so you know, I'm new to the Adobe forums but I'm not so new to Premiere Pro. I've used Premiere since 1.5 and have been fortunate to use every version up to CS5. We, at the shop, always talk about how Premiere could be a bit better and so after 6 years of talking I've finally submitted a few Feature Requests for Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 and CS5.5. Below are the requests submitted one by one:
    https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
Feature Request: Premiere Pro CS5, CS5.5
    *******Enhancement / FMR*********
Brief title for your desired feature:
    Source Panel Keyboard Zoom
How would you like the feature to work?
In the Keyboard Customization menu, add keyboard zoom options for the Source Panel.  Also have an option for vertical and horizontal zoom for audio.
Why is this feature important to you?
Often times I use the Source monitor before inserting clips of video or audio into the timeline. The current method of pinpointing an area in the Source monitor is by using the horizontal bar, which can be a little jarring. I always use the shortcut key (-) to zoom out and (=) to zoom in when using the timeline and program monitor. This may seem like a minor feature request but is key component to speed up my work flow and make my production time more efficient.
    *******Enhancement / FMR*********
Brief title for your desired feature:
    Set Clip Markers Button
How would you like the feature to work?
In the timeline panel, beside the Set Display Style and Show Key Frames buttons, a Set Clip Markers button can be added to both the Video and Audio tracks. Just as the other buttons have dropdown menus, the Set Clip Marker would have its dropdown menu for set other numbered, next available or unnumbered. If the dropdown menu was set to next available number, each time the button was pressed the clip marker would adjust just as it does from the Marker tab at the top of the screen.
    *******Enhancement / FMR*********
Brief title for your desired feature:
    Multi-Camera Audio Fix
How would you like the feature to work?
I think this is more of a Bug Report but I'm submitting this as a Feature Request. When I edit in Multi-camera mode and I have a nested video sequence with the audio tracks beneath the nested video the first audio track gets extracted whenever I make multi-camera cuts. A work around for this is to lock the first audio track. At times I do forget to lock the audio and have to go back and extend the audio to get it back on its track.
Why is this feature important to you?
This fix is important because it makes the multi-camera feature more reliable and it saves time in the editing process.
Why is this feature important to you?
Because most of our jobs require multiple cameras and multiple audio sources, both on camera and standalone, using the Marker tab at the top of the screen is very time consuming when syncing each clip. I know many Premiere Pro users would benefit from this feature especially with the rise of the HDSLR work flows and the need to sync audio from external devices such as the Zoom H4N.
    *******Enhancement / FMR*********
Brief title for your desired feature:
    Horizontal Audio Master Meter
How would you like the feature to work?
Customize the Audio Master Meter so that it can dock horizontally, similarly to how Adobe Soundbooth has its audio meter above.
Why is this feature important to you?
When we deploy to other countries, we have to use our laptops for editing. Because of the limited resolution on our laptops I think it would be better to have the audio meter at the top of the screen to maximize the amount of work space on laptops.
    *******Enhancement / FMR*********
Brief title for your desired feature:
    Multi-Camera Monitor sync with Timeline
How would you like the feature to work?
Put simply, have the Multi-Camera Monitor sync real time with the Timeline Panel. Right now, whenever you use the Multi-camera Monitor it operates independently from the Timeline Panel. It should operate just as the Program monitor does with the Timeline.
Why is this feature important to you?
When I scrub through the footage in the Multi-Camera monitor I don't get a feel for the entire sequence and my current location when editing. When I use the Program monitor along with the Timeline Panel I have a reference of where I am in real time and it’s easier to manage cuts when I edit in the Timeline Panel.
If you have any feature requests for Premiere Pro, agree or disagree with the requests posted here I'd like to hear your opinions. Please state your Brief Title, The Feature, and Why you agree/disagree with the feature requests posted.
