Desktop Document Folder

There used to be a place on my desktop with stacking folders for my documents. I somehow removed it or lost it. I know its probably simple but can someone please help me figure out how to bring it back to my desktop?

There's "three zones" of the Dock, or at least that's what I call it:
*Zone 1:* The top most icon or left most icon (based on how the Dock location is configured), this is where Finder sits. Secondly, the bottom most icon or the right most icon (again based on Dock location), this is where Trash sits. Finder will always be on your Dock and it'll always be an active application. The same goes for the Trash bin, it however won't have the little active "light" underneath it and may sometimes look like an eject icon based on what's dragged over it. All of the icons on your Dock can be customized, other than Finder & Trash.
*Zone 2:* Is anything between Finder and the "hash marks" on the Dock. To the left (or top) of those hash marks is where you can store shortcuts to popular applications. The amount of icons here to direct you to favorite applications is up to you.
*Zone 3:* Is anything between the "hash marks" and the Trash on the Dock. To the right (or bottom) of those hash marks is where you can store folders and minimized application windows. In order to make use of the "stacks" feature you'll need to drag a folder into this zone and then enable the features of Stacks.

  • Disable Save to Desktop / Documents Folder

    Hello,
    we are building some restricted Clients for a special room and we need to disable the save as dialoge
    When open a PDF-Document in InternetExplorer and then want to save it, the default path is set to My Documents (Instead of the default "Downloads" save location from IE) . We have already disabled the Libarys via Registry but in the "save
    as" dialoge they are still there.
    We want to achive that a User can only save files to a fileserver and nowhere else. Additionally we have seen this in the open dialog with the desktop as default path, which we want to disable also. Normally the User see anything in the Desktop (restricted
    via GPO), but unfortunately its possiable to save and open files there.
    I have looked at User- and ShellFolder Registry Keys to custimize the dialoges but it works, but possibly not the best solution. Also I know thats possiable to work with folder redirection, but then the libaries are still there.
    Is there a way to disable the "documents" and "desktop" save-as dialogs, so that its noted by the application and only show the share path?
    I hope its possiable to understand what I mean :-)

  • Files have vanished from my Desktop / Document folder

    Really not sure where to post this....
    Something very strange and bad has just happened to my computer. I plugged in my external Lacie hard drive to start a backup and, using the app that came with it, it informed me that there was no room left on the drive, shall it delete the back up and start over which is pretty standard. However as soon as it stared, the files that were on my desktop disappeared completely so all i now have is the back drop picture.
    It looks as if the app. has treated my home folder the way it would usually treat the external HD that I use for back up - it's deleted from my files alphabetically (first Apps, then Desktop then Documents and it deleted a couple of entries from my library folder before I quit). Although they aren't there anymore I don't think they've been deleted as nothing went into my trash. It almost seems like the Lacie app. has used a terminal command to 'forget' the files. Anybody got any ideas? I'm set to lose over 6 years worth of files...

    Unfortunately, an rm command will remove without using .Trash. But that seems unlikely.
    Launch Utilities/Terminal and at the prompt, type *ls ~Documents* and see what is there.

  • Documents folder on Desktop and a question about trash

    Hello all. My previous experience has been on Windows PCs, and as a result, I make assumptions and get frustrated on my new Macbook. I was trying to organize some of my files in the Documents folder, and at one point my errant clicking and dragging caused a folder to appear on the desktop for "Documents." Based on my previous experience with Windows, I assumed that folder was a shortcut folder, and because I like my desktop area to be uncluttered and free of icons, I moved it to the trash without thinking anything of it. I continue to organize files in "Documents" under finder as if nothing is amiss. Lo and behold, I go to empty my trash later, and I notice that it is taking some time and says "Deleting 214 of 6517 files" which clues me in to the fact that it is deleting a LOT of things, not just the one or two extraneous short cut icons I thought I had thrown in there. I hit "Stop Emptying Trash" and took a look at the damage. Many of my files in "Documents" got deleted. I moved the "Documents" folder out of the trash and on to the desktop. My questions for anyone kind enough to answer is this:
    1. Is there ANY possible way for me to recover those files? Are they really REALLY gone? If it were Windows, I would know where to look, but because I am new to this OS . . .
    2. What should I have done to remove this darn icon from my desktop? I know its always said that "everything is so intuitive on a mac" but I disagree. Especially when you have moved over from Windows. The contextual menu that comes up when I click on the icon does not allow me to "delete this shortcut." How can I delete this from the desktop but still retain the few files I have remaining?

    By the numbers:
    1. See my "Data Recovery" FAQ for comprehensive advice that may help you with this problem.
    2. Based on what you describe, it sounds like you dragged your Documents folder to the desktop. Generally, the files and folders that appear on one's desktop are actually files and folders within your Home > Desktop folder. By default, your Documents folder is also within your Home folder, at the top level like the Desktop folder, i.e. Home > Documents. You should have moved the Documents folder back to the top level of your Home folder.
    Mac OS X aliases to objects — roughly equivalent to Windows shortcuts to files and folders — are created by dragging an object while holding both the Command and Option keys. See "Mac OS X 10.4 Help: Creating an alias." An alias to an object displays a curved arrow in its lower-left corner — a badge — to differentiate itself from the actual object.
    If you merely drag an object from your Home folder to your desktop, it moves that object from its former folder to the desktop, i.e. the Home > Desktop folder: it does not create an alias to that object unless you also hold Command-Option while dragging.

  • How do I get My Documents folder back on desktop?

    When I got the new MBP My Documents folder was at the bottom with rest of programs. Not sure what I did but somehow sent it away. How can I get it back on my desktop instead of having to go into HD every time I want to pull a file? Thanks.

    another method to have convenient access to the Documents folder is to drag the folder into the Dock. this will create a shortcut, and all you have to do is click the dock shortcut, and it'll bring you to Documents

  • Document file saving confusion using desktop "alias" folder

    I'm having trouble finding files in Snow Leopard. My question is , where are "saved" document files supposed to go?
    I like using a desktop alias folder, but over time I've played around with Time Machine, adding and deleted folders in the Dock, and created three or four different alias folders and basically I've screwed the pooch; there are now non-duplicate folders named "User Name" and "User Name 2"  (plus the  empty "Documents" sub-folder I've heard is a place holder for older software files ?) on the HD and I don't what is where the new files are being saved.
    In any case, I may have two, three or even four sets of partial documents, so I need to do some work moving files around, trashing some and condsolidating the rest into the master Documents file ... but before I go through all that I need to make sure I understand where the OS wants saved files to go.
    Is this path correct ? MS Word > Save > Documents Alias Folder > HD > Users > User Name > Documents.
    If that's correct, then I can go to the various Word 2011  forums and find out how to make sure files are being saved using that path.

    Stuffit's default is to decompress files saved to the desktop.
    Pages documents are actually zipped folders.
    Look in the Stuffit preferences and see if you can turn it off. Or get out of the habit of saving to the desktop, there are better places to organise your work
    I disagree that Stuffit is useless, in fact it really is the swiss army knife of decompression and pays to have it around. Amongst other archive utilities.

    It means that this folder couldn't be found. Drag it off the Dock, and then, open a Finder window, go to the folder that contains it and drag it to the Dock, so it will show up

  • Folder redirection configured in GPO does not create Documents folder and does not redirect

    Another Folder Redirect-post - sorry for that, but I could not find an answer for my problem so far: even with consulting many threads here...
    We have an existing environment under Windows XP and want to move away from that. Now I ran into troubles with folder redirection...
    The following folder- and permission structure exists so far:
    \\<server>\<Users$-share>: This is the base folder for all users-directories
    -> Permissions: SYSTEM: Full / Administrators: Full / Users: Read&Execute, only this folder
    -> Share-permissions: Authenticated users: Full control
    \\<server>\<Users$-share>\<username>: base folder for the specific user
    -> Permissions: SYSTEM: Full / Administrators: Full / User: Change, all permissions inherited onwards
    -> Giving only change permission prevent further problems with self-called "advanced users"... ;-)
    \\<server>\<Users$-share>\<username>\profil.V2: Profile directory of the user
    -> Of course here the permissions are set by the system: override the predefined permission
    \\<server>\<Users$-share>\<username>\daten: Atcual Home directory of the user
    \\<server>\<Users$-share>\<username>\daten\Documents: Suposed Documents directory of the user
    Now I am going to Server 2012 and Windows 8.1, configured the GPO to redirect Documents folder into the above mentioned:
    GPO - User configuration - Policies - Windows settings - Folder Redirection - Documents:
    Setting: Standart - redirects all folders to the same path
    Destination folder: Copy to base directory of the user
    I apply policy to the user, log out and in - it doesn't work, no folder Documents created in my home-folder, Folder Documents still configured at C:\Users\<user>\Documents
    A very special point:
    I also do Redirection of the My Pictures-folder: Define it to follow the Documents folder. Funnily that one works and creates and configures \\<server>\<Users$-share>\<username>\daten\Pictures
    -> So in my eyes, it should work!
    Then: I want to do the folder redirection without Offline Files, due to the fact, that our users work with dynamically assigned virtual desktops, which are been cleaned everytime a user logs off a machine. Therefore synchronizing doesn't make sense...
    I just cannot see, why this redirection does not work :-(

    Before going further, would you please let me confirm the OS version of the Windows Server which you used to
    configure folder redirection? Based on your description, did you mean that those users (who will be applied folder redirection settings) logged on Windows XP client computer?
    When you configure the folder redirection setting in Document Properties (path:
    User Configuration-> Policies-> Windows Settings-> Folder Redirection-> Documents), please check if you checked “Also apply redirection policy to Windows 2000, Windows 2000 Server, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 operating system” in Settings
    tab. As below picture shows.

    Would you please provide a screenshot of those settings you describe? Meanwhile, please summarily describe

    gpresult command to check if the folder redirection group policy was really applied.

  • Finder Crashing When Accessing Documents Folder

    When trying to open my Documents folder, I click on Hard Drive, Users and then my Account folder. Finder then instantly restarts. I have run Disk Utility and verified/ repaired disk permissions. Also have Verified disk but have been unable to run the repair disk as needed. Somehow I have also misplaced my restore CD so I need options to fix this.

    Tough without a Tiger Disk, but try fsck...
    To use fsck, you must run it from the command line. Unlike using your mouse to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. The Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities) and single-user mode are two examples of command-line interfaces in which you can type such commands. To use fsck:
    1. Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line. Hold CMD+s keys down at bootup.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
    2. At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
    (space between fsck and -fy important)
    3. Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK 
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *** 

Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
    4. When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.

  • How do I get my Documents folder back on the Dock?

    I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, and I've read a string of similar questions/answers. I've tried dragging the documents folder from the sidebar in Finder, but it won't drag to the Dock by Trash. Where else should I look? I've tried to 'control-click' Applications, but the only options available are 'Open', 'get info', rename documents, & 'remove from sidebar'.

    Okay, no problem - first, go to the Finder menu here:
    click on Preferences, then General, and make sure your hard disks are checked to show on the desktop.
    After that, you should see something like this in the upper right corner:
    Yours may say Macintosh HD (I renamed mine), but the icon should be there. That is your hard drive icon - that is where everything is.
    So, doubleclick or right click on that and make sure you have list view or column view selected, like this and then follow the path I outlined above:

  • How do I unlock My Documents folder in the hard-drive with another PC?

    I have a 3000 series j100 desktop, 3 days ago restarted on its own and can't boot anymore, no keyboard, no mouse and no monitor signal sent from the pc.
    I took the drive out and use it as an external drive to my laptop, but it asks for a password before I can access My Documents folder.
    I believe it's the windows xp login password that's needed, but there's no field on that pop-up box to enter any password it asks.
    I know my windows login password, but I don't know if that's what really needed and how to use it to unlock the folder.
    Is there another way to access the folder, or do I need to get the computer working again to access the folder in the drive?
    I also do have some encrypted files inside My Documents folder that I created with windows when the pc was working.
    The encryption comes along with windows xp. When you right-click a file, you choose properties and advance option then apply the encryption, then the file name turns color to green.
    Could it be the reason I can't access My Documents folder in the drive with another pc?
    Please help, I need to know if I need to do a recovery job or is there an easy way to access My Documents folder in the drive with another computer.

  • Files in Document folder disappear

    Started my computer this evening only to find that the folder “Documents” in Finder was empty. When I closed down yesterday there were documents and subdirectories in it. Using “Word” or “XL” I can open the documents which supports that they are not lost. When I try to save an open document back to the directory “Documents” I get a message advising that the file (document) already exits. 
    When I search for a known document in Spotlight the properties state that it is located in the “Documents” folder
    Why can’t I see the contents of the “Documents” folder in “Finder”

    Do a backup.
    Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.
    Re-launch Finder by restarting the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
    If the same, return the .plist to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer one.

  • Keyboard shortcut for the Document Folder in file open/save dialog

    Does anyone know if there exists a keyboard shortcut for Document Folder in the File Save/Open Dialog? <command><shift>O works in the Finder. I tried variations of that in the dialog and didn't find any. <command>D takes you to the desktop. I tried other variations surrounding that to get to the Document Folder and didn't find any.
    Anyone? Bueller?

  • Files won't delete from desktop with folder redirection

    I have folder direction set up with a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard x64 Primary Domain Controller and a 2012R2Stdx64 File and Print Server that is the backup domain controller. 1 single user out of 20 can't delete files from his desktop.
    Folder redirection is configured via GPO and offline files are enabled.
    When you go to delete a file it says "Item Not Found" "This is no longer located in \\HSI-FPS01\Users\My Documents\Desktop Verify the item's location and try again."
    However, the item still persists in showing, both in the server folder and the desktop however you can't open it.
    There are no sync errors, I've done re-syncs. I've also rebooted, refreshed the desktop, etc.
    Any ideas?

  • ADE insists on making another My Documents folder on my machine

    I have to have Adobe Digital Editions to download e-books from my local library system. However, the program is doing something that is driving me crazy. It insists on making a new My Documents folder (with a My Digital Editions subfolder) when it installs. It is very confusing to have two My Documents folders on my desktop. I tried moving the My Digital Editions folder to the My Documents of my choice, uninstalling and then reinstalling the program, but ADE keeps recreating a second My Documents folder.
    Is there any way to install ADE without this annoying duplication??
    I have read the thread about how the program does not let you move the My Digital Editions folder and I echo the sentiments of all of the users who said that ADE should let the *user* dictate where his/her e-books are stored, not the program. I am using ADE 1.7.2.1131 on a Windows 7 64 bit system.
