Desktop gone from finder

I am switching to a mac from a pc...
from finder, i tried to drag desktop under places to the dock, so I could have 1 click to get to the desktop. I must have done something wrong, because i got a puff of cloud, like I was dragging something off the dock. The real problem is that it removed desktop from places in finder. How do I get that back in finder? Can I drag it to dock?
Thanks
bob

Go to the Preferences in Finder, select the Sidebar pane, and checkmark Desktop under Places. That will put the Desktop back in your sidebar.
As to putting it in the Dock, go to your user's Home folder (click your user name in the Finder sidebar). In your Home folder you'll find the "real" Desktop folder (the icon in the Sidebar is an alias and can't be put in the Dock directly) and you can drag that to the Dock. Make sure you drag the folder to the right side of the dashed bar in the Dock; only applications can go on the left side.
Regards.

  • Pictures gone from finder

I have made the photos icon disappear in a puff of smoke.
I could not 'undo' this move. It is gone from the finder window.
I was dragging it down into the dock, and then it disappered.
Does anyone know how to get it back into finder
    Thank you.

    Hi David!
The icons in the Sidebar, and also in the Dock, are merely Aliases, or Shortcuts, to the original folder or application, which is not affected, by the action of dragging off.
When you drag them off as you did, they will disappear, as you have seen.
The method that roam has posted will work to replace the Alias icon in the Sidebar.
When you drag the folder from your Home folder to the Sidebar, you must position it below the separator bar.
To put an Alias icon in the Dock, you can also open the folder where the application or folder resides, and position the cursor on the item, hold down on the mouse, drag the item to the Dock, and release the pressure on the mouse.
If the item is a folder, like your Pictures folder, drag it to the right of the separator bar.
If the item is an application, drag it to the left of the separator bar.
    Good Luck!

  • Photos gone from finder

I just installed the mac update today for snow leopard on my 2011 macbook pro. Now all of the sudden "Photos" is gone from places in finder. Before this update I was able to navigate to pictures I imported from memory cards now the only way to get to these pictures are to go to pictures >iphoto library > right click then show package contents> then random numbered folders - nothing is organized.
If I go to upload pictures to facebook, twitter or photoshop I can find all of my folders under media - but this location does not exist in finder.
Everything was working fine before this update.
Is this happening to anyone else? anyway to display albums in finder? I have a feeling I am missing something right in front of my face.

Accessing your files this way is not supported and a pretty good way to trash your Library.

And thats exactly how you do it.
No there is no way to "display albums in the Finder". They don't exist in the FInder. Iphoto is a database nd it tracks the decisons you make in the database. So, for instance, an Album is really an instruction recorded on the database to "Display this group of pics together in this arrangement"

  • Pictures/photos gone from finder sidebar

I never used and photo apps such as iPhoto or Photo Booth. I always just kept my photos organized in folders within the 'my Pictures' tab on the sidebar in FINDER. That tab just disappeared when I updated to the new OS Yosemite. I can't find any of my thousands of photos from over the years. The My Pictures tab used to be right there under Applications, Downloads, etc. Where is it?

    open the Finder Preferences:
click somewhere on the empty Desktop to bring the Finder forward, the go to the Finder menu in the main menu bar and click Preferences.
Click the "Sidebar" tab in the Preferences panel and enable "Pictures".

  • My Applications folder and Mac HD is gone from finder and cannot locate it anywhere.  Also now getting download errors on everything and they cannot complete.  This happened with iPhoto tonight.  Any ideas?

I don't realize when this started because I don't download apps that often or look for my applications folder.  But I cannot find my HD anywhere.  I know it has been less than two-three weeks since the last time I specifially accessed the applications folder.  Its odd because tonight I tried downloading iPhoto and got an error that it was unable to download ... try again from the app store.  I did this twice with the same result.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

Basically I ended up bringing the MacBook into the Apple Store. It was determined something was going wrong with my hard drive and I ended up getting a new MacBook because I could not wait for it to be fixed (I was already starting to get behind on my school work). There was no real solution.

  • My hard drive icon has gone from finder. how do i check available space?

I normally check my available hard drive space by clicking on the icon hardrive in finder window.  However in Lion its not there. where is it?   How do i check available space?

Go to Finder Preferences (in the Finder menu) > General tab, make sure the item "Hard Disks" is checkmarked. Once it is, your hard drive's icon should appear on the desktop in the rightmost column.
You can also maintain a quickly viewable summary. In Finder, go to the View menu and select Show Status Bar. That will add a narrow area at the bottom of each Finder window. In that area will be shown the amount of free space remaining on the drive, as well as the number of items in that folder.

  • Hard Disk (Macintosh HD) gone from my desktop and Finder sidebar.

Hello. My hard disk is gone from my desktop and I can't find it in Finder as well. I tried logging into a different user account and it doesn't show up either. I don't know if a cache file in my first account might be the problem. Also if I try Shift>Command and press C, it is not there either I just see my network icon. Any help is appreciated.

Click here and follow the instructions.

Have made back up, but unfortunately a little too late. What to do?
MacBook Pro 15 "late 2008, Processor 2.53 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB, Software Mac OS X 10.7.4 Lion (11E53).

    1. You did not get an error message telling you that your iPhoto library was getting full. You got a message telling you that your HD was getting full, right?
OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on.
Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do.
Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.
Your Library has been damaged from being run on an overfull disk.
How much free space on it now?

Whilst I appreciate your responding - I do not think this helps with what I was enquiring (at least not without further explanations anyways).
I am aware of, and do use, the function - System Preferences > Keyboard > Text - for various replacements like (tm), (c), etc .... and also for fractions like 1/2, 1/4, 1/3.
However, my question was in relation to SUPERSCRIPTS for dates / numbers - namely, superscripting numerical suffixes for things like 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th,
So - please help - HOW do I set this up ? If indeed it is possible without System Preferences > Keyboard > Text ???

Whoa whoa no need to go restoring stuff yet, once you've done that check to verify you have done what Overlook2011  IF that doesn't work for calendars ensure your default account for calendars is set to iCloud and in calendars that it is told to "Show all calendars"
