"Destination Volume" isn't showing up during re-installation

Hi all,
My Powerbook just crashed all of a sudden last night; when i tried restarting it, I got the Finder icon with a question mark in the middle. I tried reinstalling and restoring using the original CD's, but when the time comes to select my destination volume, my HDD doesn't show up in the list of options. I tried using Disk Utility to repair the drive, but it isnt showing up there either.
Is my HD done?
I have a Powerbook G4, use a 10.3.9 and have never really had any major problem with the OS. I dont think they are related, but just so you know, I dropped my laptop about 6 months back and the battery was being pretty erratic after that. I haven't used the battery since then .. the computer was working fine though.
Any help is appreciated ... thanks a lot!

Hi Again mkkelso!
Your issue is slightly different than the OP's.
As I don't think you have yet installed, an OS, on the new Hard Drive, you won't be able to start up in Safe Mode
Refer to My Response HERE, in your other Topic New hard drive, need to reinstall OS, but having problems, and continue the discourse, in that Thread.

  • 20" iMac (mid 2007) wont show HD during OS installation from disk

    Hi,
My iMac was showing a grey screen at start-up with a flashing question mark. I read the previous discussions and re-installed the OS and reformatted the HD. Everything was running like new and I updated all the software then shut it down for the night. Today I started it back up and again the grey screen with the question mark. Now I am trying to install the OS again from disk, but it will not show my HD when asking where to install OSX...does this mean that my HD has failed?
    Thanks!

If after following Ralph's suggestions you still have a problem I'd recommend running Apple Hardware Test. It's possible your HD is failing.

You can download the full installer from http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/ or ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/9.x/9.5.0/ (select your language).

  • Select a destination volume blank and HD not showing up in disc utility

    Hi
I have sold my PowerBook G4 and was trying to wipe the hard drive so that the buyer would not have access to any deleted files. I used the install disc and clicked erase free space.  Now, I have tried to install the CD Mac OS X and it gets up to "Select a destination" and this is blank with no option to click anything except "Go back". When I open up desk utility, my HD does not appear there. The HD was working fine before I clicked on "erase free space" earlier.
    Any suggestions?

When you say that the HDD isn't showing up in Disk Utility, do you mean that it isn't showing up on the left hand side of the app like in this picture?

  • TS2200 Cannot find a destination volume

I am trying to erase and reinstall Snow Leopard on an old MacBook. I installed a new HD 2 years ago and used the computer problem free. I first tried to erase the disk, but I was getting an input/output error.
I found on this site that it might take some time for the disk to appear in the "Select a Destination" window. Mac OS X 10.5: Installer destination window does not show drives - Apple Support
However to check the status, I went to Terminal as recommended in the article. In Terminal, I enter "ps auxc | grep fsck" and it returns with "command not found"
Can anyone tell me why the command is not found and if there is a different command that I could use? Any other advice?
    Thanks

When I held CMD+s during bootup, the Mac ejected the CD-ROM. This was the disk that I was using.
The Mac then displayed the flashing folder with the "?" on it. So I inserted my Snow Leopard installation disk. I still had the same problem in Disk Utility. I turned off the machine and held down the CMD+s. I went into single user mode and entered the code. When I did that, it gave me the message "The volume Mac OS X Install DVD appears to be OK."
I then went to Disc Utility and looked at a partition of the disk. It is a 500 GB disk, but it let me create 1 partition at 250 GB. I then went to the Select Destination Window, and the partition that I had created, named "Untitled" was there. But this is only for 250 GB and the HD is 500 Gb. Is there a part of the disc that is not being recognized? I am currently installing the Snow Leopard on the partition.

  • Panther Upgrade - destination volume?

First time poster-- I have OS 10.2x and want to upgrade to 10.3 Panther.
I inserted the install disc, followed the Installer instructions through the Introduction, License, etc until I reached the phase on Destination Volume. There was nothing to select. The pane was empty. The continue button did not activate. Only active button was Go Back. I quit the Installer and after several hours figured out how to get the CD out and restore to my original OS. Here I am.
Why isn't there a choice for the destination volume?
Does there need to be one?
How do I move to the next phase and get the newer version loaded? I may be asking too many questions at once. I did look through previous posts and found nothing specific to my problem. There are a lot of posts!
    Thank you.

    Yes.
I then attempted another restart. Same result. I saw a "show log" on the menu and clicked on it and it said the following:
    Error detected
    Name: NSGenericException
Reason: Target volume is damaged and cannot be repaired by the
    installer
    Completed installation steps:
    Remaining installation steps:
    Install failed
    Error detected
    Name: NSGenericException
I performed a Disk utility and checked the Panther install disk and they are ok.
Not knowing exactly what I was doing, i ran a repair disk permissions on the HD and it repaired some things and completed.
I then repair disk and got the following:
Keys of of order (in red letters)
    Rebuilding Catolog B-tree
The volume MacIntosh HD could not be repaired (red letters)
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972) (in red letters)
    Repair attempted on 1 volume
0 HFS volumes repaired (in green letters)
1 volume could not be reapired (in red letters)
I am now back to Jaguar and running like when I bought it. I Just really want to upgrade, that's all.
Thanks to all for your input.

  • Updated OS & now Time Capsule icon isn't showing up on desktop

Just finally upgraded to 10.5. Now my Time Capsule icon isn't showing up on my desktop. Light is green on TC and I can navigate to it through Macintosh HD folder, then shared devices. I just used it as an additional external hard drive at this point. How do I get the icon to reappear. I already updated Airport too.

Presuming you mean the volume of the Time Capsule's internal disk, mount that, open the Accounts panel of System Preferences, authenticate by clicking on the lock if it's "closed", select your account, select the "Login Items" tab, then drag the icon of that drive to the login items list.
Note that this will cause a window of that drive to appear each time you log in. If you search these discussions, you may find some older threads that discuss ways around that.

  • Can't install 10.4.9 on my internal hard drive - no destination volume

    Hello,
I replaced the internal hard drive of my MacBook2.1 and am attempting to install Mac OS 10.4.9
    Here are the specs:
500 GB Western Digital BPKT Scorpio Black Internal SATA Hard Drive
    Intel Core 2 Duo
    2 GHz
    1 GB of memory
I start up the MacBook and insert the Install disk. I encounter a problem when at the 'Select Destination' section of the install. It says to 'Select a destination volume to install the Mac OS X software' but there is no destination volume available to select!
This led me to opening the 'Disk Utility'. When the Disk Utility is open, it shows the hard drive (the SMART status is verified) on the left. However, it says the total capacity of the HD is 3.6 TB, which is not correct. I erase the HD with the 'Mac OS Extended (journaled)' volume format. I attempt to partition the HD with one partition with the same format. When I click 'Partition' a window pops up that says 'Partition failed with the error - Input/output error'.
Not sure what to do to prevent this error. I do have install disks for Mac OS 10.5.4 and can partition the HD with that, but still no destination volume available when tryint to install 10.4.9. The MacBook2.1 can with version 10.4.9 and I cannot install 10.5.4.
I had read some discussions about problems with External HD's but haven't read any on Internal. I am really hoping someone can help me with this problem as I bought this MacBook second hand (from my wonderful sister) and am unfamiliar with it. Do I need a particular HD to install 10.4.9 properly? I'm all ears.
    Thank you,
    Highlander

    Hello,
Was Highlander85's issue ever been resolved?A
I'm experiencing the exact same problem as Highlander85 except my system is an iMac and I'm attempting to erase/partition an internal Seagate Barracuda 500G SATA. I have tried everything that Highlander tried and still no luck. I also confirmed w/Seagate that adjusting jumper settings for this drive is not necessary. Is there a chance there is an issue w/my RAM or would you think it's time to open up my machine again and R/R myHDD while I am still within the stores return policy?
The spec's for my system per your last reply are below:
OS X 10.4.7 (Have original disks)
    Hardware Overview:
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2

    Memory: 2.5 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: IM51.0090.B09
    SMC Version (system): 1.9f4

  • After migrating to a new MBP, when saving or opening documents, I sometimes (but not always) get a warning such as: "Word cannot save this document due to a naming or permissions error on the destination volume." Can someone please explain?

I recently migrated from a MBP with OS 10.6 to a MCB with OS 10.8. Some glitches are popping up. Here's the one on my mind at the moment:
When saving or opening documents, I get a warning such as: "Word cannot save this document due to a naming or permissions error on the destination volume." Can someone please explain?

Since this is isolated to a single file, try exporting it to Interchange Format (.inx), then open and save the resulting file as a new InDesign file.
Since the problem occurs during export, that may not be possible. Another option to try would be to copy all elements, page by page, and "paste in place" into a new document the same size. If you used layers, be sure to enable "paste remembers layers" in the layers panel menu.
This kind of problem is often indicative of an underlying font issue. You said there are only three fonts, and you should verify that in Type > Find Font... Try replacing, at least temporarily the fonts in use with something else that you know to be reliable from other documents. You might want to do this before the other steps.

  • 4.6 updater doesn't provide a destination volume

Running on a Powerbook G4, 17" (first generation), 1Gb RAM, 100Gb HD. Running Tiger 10.4.5. Tried running the updater through the software update panel - got about 3/4 through, then said it couldn't complete the update. Rebooted, repaired disk permissions, then downloaded the updater for a manual install. Ran it, went through all the confirmation screens, but when I got to the Destination Volume screen, it was blank - no drives showing. Tried to run Disk Utility, and it won't open because of a background utility that failed to launch. Shut down the Powerbook, hooked it to my G5 in target disk mode and ran Disk Utility to repair disk and disk permissions. Everything completed successfully. Downloaded the 10.4.6 Combo installer for PPC, booted the Powerbook. Still no drives in the destination volumes screen. Rebooted using DiskWarrior, repaired the drive without any issues, rebooted in Safe Mode... still no drives showing.
Can anyone tell me what's going on here and what I need to do to fix this? The Powerbook is running fine otherwise, but I'd like to get this updater installed. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

I've also had similar problems since trying to install 10.4.6 on my 15"PB (which was previously running beautifully on 10.4.5). After numerous problems, even after Archive & Install, the hard drive "disappeared." Someone on this forum posted this fix (see the 2nd post): http://tinyurl.com/zbgrk
Once I got the hard drive back, I reformatted the drive and reinstalled 10.4.5 (I just spent the whole weekend on this mess, and I'm not going to try 10.4.6 again! )

  • Problems installing, cant verify destination volume

I'm trying to install Tiger 10.4 and everything goes well until I get to the "install" phase. During "Preparing the Disk" when it's "Verifying Destination Volume" which I previously chose my HD when I was prompted in the beginning, it fails. If I restart like it tells me to, the same thing happens. Anyone know what this means?

    Hi frogtooth,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
There are too many possible reasons for your problem. Make sure you have the retail full install version of Tiger, then follow this procedure: 10.4 Tiger Upgrade: Decision tree+Checklist.

  • No Destination Volume; Disk Utility problems too!

I have an Imac G5. I was having problems with my old OS (panther)--basically it was corrupted and kept crashing and then wouldn't even load. So I ran out and bought Tiger (as I had lost my original Panther install CD, I figured I might as well upgrade since I was doling out the cash for the software).
I did an archive install so that I could rescue my music from the old harddrive, which worked. Then I tried to trash the "previous system" folder but the computer froze each time I tried to empty the trash. I figured I'd better re-install Tiger (this time doing an erase install), since applications were running kind of slowly and I didn't want the stuff on the old software to corrupt my nice new Tiger.
In re-installing Tiger, however, the system seemed to crash. I re-booted the computer and now the installer doesn't recognize my hard drive--there aren't any icons to choose in the destination volume section.
I went into disk utility and ran first aid on what I assume is the harddrive (something which says 74.5GB and then some numbers). The error message I got was: "the underlying task reported failure on exit." From reading some other posts in this forum, this sounds like quite a bad thing. I tried to run techtools delux, but the computer didn't load it (not sure if it is the appropriate version for tiger anyway, since the version isn't listed on the cd or anywhere in my applecare literature).
Ah, she should zero out her harddrive, you say. Well, here's what I've done: I made a partition (sucessfully, I think) and tried to zero out the new disk (which, for some reason is called diskos3). Afterwards the installer should recognize my harddrive, right?
Wrong! Turns out the disk can't be erased due to the same error message as before: "the underlying task reported failure on exit."
Okay, that's the end of my sad, sorry tale. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You probably will. It's possible that it became unplugged, in which case it needs to be plugged in again.

  • No destination volume when reinstalling OS X 10.4

I started up my iMac this morning and it went to a grey screen and then came up with a flashing questionmark. i looked this up and figured i should boot from the installation disk and see what was wrong.
I tried to reinstall the OS but when i get to the part where i have to chose a destination volume, there is nothing there. i have left it half an hour adn there is still nothing there. I then checked in disk utility, and all that shows up there is the installation disk on the superdrive.
I then ran the extended apple hardware test from the installation disk and it came up with no errors, said the mass storage (which i presume means the hard drive) passed.
Anyone know whats wrong? I would really appreciate any suggestions.
