Detecting client proxy settings

Dear All,
Can anyone tell me how to detect client proxy settings from a java application (not in a browser).
I tried System.getProperties().getProperty("http.proxyhost") without success.
Our application is distribuited using Java Web Start technology and needs to know proxy settings to connect to the remote host thru an unknown proxy server.
Solution to this problem is very important and urgent! Please help me!
Thanks in advance!

Look for
proxyHost
proxyPort
or (for https)
https.proxyHost
https.proxyPort

  • Detect default proxy settings

I am creating an applet which needs to get data from the internet. Since the applet will be run behind different firewalls, I was wondering how to detect the default proxy, i.e. the one the browser is using. Many apps I have seen have an option 'auto detect proxy' and I was wondering how to implement this in an applet.
    Thanks

you might find that proxy settings are in the registry somewhere; i'd be guessing that's how these apps do it.
as your app is java it shouldn't typically be looking up registry keys, but if it's only going to be running on windows, then .....

  • Web service client ignores http proxy settings

I have a web service client using Weblogic's web service client library. I'm trying to instruct it to use a http proxy. I've set all the following system properties:
    -Dhttp.proxyHost=127.0.0.1
    -Dhttp.proxyPort=8080 -Dweblogic.webservice.transport.http.proxy.host=127.0.0.1 -Dweblogic.webservice.transport.http.proxy.port=8080
No traffic is passing through the proxy.
When the proxy is down, the application works fine too. I suspect that the proxy settings are completely ignored for some reason.
I'm using Weblogic 8.1 SP4 on a Windows XP box and JDK 1.4.2 (Sun's bundled JDK with Weblogic).

    Sorry about the delay,
You just need to use the standard java http proxy properties, take a look at:

  • Firefox not detecting/using system proxy settings

I use a command line script to change among various proxies (and none). Firefox does not recognize when a proxy is turned on or fails to connect to it (no error messages), while other browsers and applications do just fine.
I have tried selecting "Use system proxy settings" and "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network."
My script contains these lines to activate a proxy
    reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections" /v DefaultConnectionSettings /t REG_BINARY /d 46000000b10000000200000014000000736f636b733d3132372e302e302e313a313131311c0000002a2e6c6f63616c3b3139322e3136382e31312e2a3b3c6c6f63616c3e000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 /f
    reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v ProxyEnable /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
    reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v MigrateProxy /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
The first line enables the proxy to take effect without entering inetcpl.cpl. Again, this works for any application other than Firefox.
The proxies are all through ssh with port forwarding.
I do not want to manually configure a proxy in Firefox, because I do not want to change this every time I need to change proxies or turn them off. This is not an acceptable solution.
I am on Windows 8.1 64bit, with Firefox version 35.0
Any idea what might be going on here?

Thank you for the response, but as above, the "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network." setting does not work.

  • Can lync client use internet proxy settings to proxy edge servers, if direct access is not reachable?

Hi everybody I am trying to Login with my lync Client out of my organization. So I am using lync as a remote user. I am in another organization, and I am using their coporate lan wired and wireless, but I cannot Login to lync in my organization.
I see that I cannot Access my edge Server on port 443 to authenticate directly, I know that Client in this organization use Internet Proxy to browse the Internet. they have a .pac in their ie Settings.
my question is; can lync Client use Internet Proxy Settings to reach the Destination? I mean the Access edge on port 443?
or it can use only Client direct Access to reach the edge Servers?
I Think that the answer is that I use tcp protocol and not http, and maybe that is the reason why I cannot use the Internet Explorer Proxy Settings to reach the Access edge Servers, different maybe is the case I Need to reach the reverse Proxy for live Meetings.
    Hope my question is clear.
    Thanks

Proxy settings are used to tell Internet Explorer the network address of an intermediary server (known as a proxy server) that is used between the browser and the Internet on some networks.
Lync client doesn’t use Internet Proxy Setting. You need to access the Edge service directly.

I worked with my basis team, seems it is not because of internet proxy or firewall issue, might be a bug with abap proxy generation program.
I tested with wsdl referencing to local xsd, and seems it worked fine, unfortunately, my xsd files are in a complicated structure, at this point my only option probably is to download all xsd files to local and modify them.
    thanks for all help.

  • Forward firefox proxy settings to clients via OS X server

As title suggests we have some proxy settings to forward to clients, this was not included on the netboot image and hence need to add now, any thoughts on this?

    Hi Jamie,
You need to check your DNS settings if the server address (FQDN) redirects correctly.
Your client needs to know where to find the server by it's correct dns name otherwise profilemanagement will not function properly.
Then verify on the server itself whether you can see the server's website. That should work ok, if it doesn't start there to fix that.
Goodluck, let me know what's going on

  • Where can I read the proxy settings Firefox chose, when configured to use "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network"?

I would like to set my system network proxy settings to those, Firefox chose. Firefox is configured to use "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network" and this works fine. How can I read out the settings Firefox chose, so I can adapt these system?

    Hello Richard,
Download MozBackup and make a backup of your bookmarks and passwords. Uninstall firefox and remove ALL folders with the name "Firefox".
Install Firefox and restore your bookmarks and passwords. Now you should have a fresh install so you have to make all settings again.

Why does it take so long and how can I speed this up?

  • 9ias and Proxy Settings for Client(Urgent !!! )

    Dear All,
I am facing a very strange problem.
Our application is running on Oracle 9ias installed on Windows2000.
When I access this from a WindowsXP M/C with browser(IE 6.0) privacy settings as medium(which is by default medium)and without IP address of 9ias m/c.(Which is infact not required),I do not get the menu of my application generated.
I some how did some hit and trial and now when I put
the IP in proxy settings of my client Browser, I am able to get the menus.
Can anyone give some hint or somebody has faced the
    problem like this.
    Thanks in advance.

That sounds like a "cop-out" to me.  Do individual applications on desktop machines have to be "proxy aware"?
Yes, they have. Not only on iPad, but every internet application, on Mac or on PC or on *nix, have to be coded internally to use proxies. Some are, and are also smart enough to check for any proxy info on network options of your system, some other will have the proxy info to be given in internal application setup, and some other, simply does not know what proxies are.

How can Apple expect to compete in the Enterprise space with this glaring hole in their operating system?  Why can't there be a setting, e.g., "all internet traffic to use proxy server".?
That is a SOCK, and is another different stuff. There is no hole in the O.S., it is the app you want to use, because that app wants connect the internet by herself, without using your proxy.
Best advice is, you ask that app's developer, to add in future releases, proxy connectivity or (best) to check if network requires a proxy and act accordingly without bother the user on the issue
Anyway, I'd like answer also your other questions:

Why am I having problems w/ most apps and the proxy settings?
You have problems because that apps don't think about the proxy setting you have in your network configuration (app poorly coded), or they require direct internet access in their specs (app aware of proxy, and do not want use it), access that you don't have because of proxy. Not your fault. Nor Apple's

Not an Apple problem, so there is nothing to address.

  • ML Server: How do i push my school proxy settings to our ML clients?

Can someone please help solve this ridiculous problem apple have created
    Thanks

The best way to do this is to use a feature invented by Microsoft (gasp!). Microsoft invented something called 'Web Proxy Autodiscovery' (WPAD). With this setup on your network the computers both Windows and Mac can 'autodiscover' the presence of a proxy server and the settings needed to use it.
Originally, OS X could not use WPAD, however I (yes moi) was able to persuade Apple to add support for this and it is available in Snow Leopard (10.6), Lion, (10.7), and Mountain Lion (10.8). You can turn it on by opening System Preferences, clicking on the Network icon, selecting Ethernet interface on the left, unlocking the padlock at the bottom, then clicking on the Advanced... button on the right, and then going to the Proxies tab at the top. You need to turn on only 'Auto Proxy Discovery' option. You do not want to use Automatic Proxy Configuration.
There is one final step, WPAD can work in one of two different ways, it can either provide the settings via DHCP and point your computer to the address of the .pac (proxy auto config file), or it uses a sepcific webpage address based on your networks domain name (the DNS method). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_Proxy_Autodiscovery_Protocol
I strongly recommend using the DHCP method. This requires setting your DHCP server up to advertise via the DHCP option code 252
It is possible to setup Apple's own DHCP server with a DHCP option code 252 but you need to manually edit the /etc/bootpd.plist file to do this. This ability to define DHCP option codes using Apple's DHCP server was added by Apple again in response to one of my suggestions. I have also written a utility to make it easier to generate the code you need for this.
Most DHCP servers built-in to routers cannot do DHCP option codes but Linux, Unix, Windows Server, and as mentioned above Apple Server all can.

  • Detecting proxy settings

According to the unofficial web start faq (http://lopica.sourceforge.net/faq.html)
a web start program can find out the proxy settings by doing a ....
    System.getProperty("proxyHost")
    System.getProperty("proxyPort")
But this doesn't seem to work for me. I set my proxy under firefox, and run under webstart via http protocol, and these come up null. I also tried getting http.proxyHost to no avail. I also tried the reset proxy settings in the web start console (whatever that is supposed to do), which didn't seem to do anything either.
Does this work for anybody else?

These settings were used by Java 1.2 (and maybe 1.3), and superceeded by System properties httpProxyPort and httpProxyHost. These were themselves superceeded in Java 1.5 with the addition of the java.net.ProxySelector class.
Now when running in Java version 1.5+, webstart and plugin will call ProxySelector.setDefault(), which will set up a proxy selector that will dynamically set the proxy when a URLConnection is made. This allows the full implementation of proxy pac files, which may determine a differant proxy depending on the host being accessed.
If you are running in Java Web Start 1.5.0 or later you can call ProxySelector.getDefault(), and use the returned proxy selector to find the proxy using the select() method with your URI.

  • Detect proxy settings and ports

Hello forum, I have a project to find out which servers or applications/services are going through ISA 2006 proxy. The servers comprise of WIndows 2003 and 2008 R2 boxes. I tried proxcfg.exe (pre 2008) and netsh winhttp show proxy (post 2008) but I get following
results. I know that these boxes do use proxy servers because they show up when I query ISA logs.

I have also looked at registry keys HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings but found nothing of relevance. Checked IE settings and found no proxy configuration. How can I check which application or service is using proxy and on which port? Thanks again.

Thanks Quan, a little background, ISA version is 2004 and the traffic logging is done on a different box with SQL 2005. Which means that all server, service/application or user generated traffic first hits ISA boxes and data is logged in SQL server. Now, I
ran a query on SQL boxes to see if there are servers or applications still accessing old ISA servers and found that many still are using that route. The query I ran is
    select clientusername,Max(logtime)
    from webproxylog
    where logtime > '2014-03-04'
    Group by Clientusername
Outcome is a list of servers and users accessing old ISA servers, please see below

So I logged on to few servers to check proxy settings. The server list comprise of Windows 2003 and 2008 R2 boxes. On a handful of servers I found proxy, under IE settings but on others I didn't find any proxy settings (under IE). Then I tried proxcfg.exe (pre
