Detecting images affected by Transparency

A few months ago, i've posted a topic to help me detecting image flattening during print process.<br /><br />For that and to detect images affected by transparency, i'm using <br />Utils<IXPUtils>()->GetGraphicsAffectedByTransparency(spreadRef)<br /><br />But, from what i can see, this method doesn't work with vector images, typically EPS. Is it normal? how can i circumvent this problem? maybe this issue will be fixed in CS3 ?<br /><br />Thanks in advance.<br />Joachim

Thanks for your reply Nancy,
I understand the print resolution but I'm talking about on screen usage by browsers. I know that images are most optimized when the pixel resolution (number of pixels per side) is not more or less than the pixel resolution browsers display the image with. However with more and more monitors being produced with larger screens and denser ppi a lot of people, me included, zoom in with the browsers using Ctrl and Plus keys to see the content better. My monitor is displaying images not at approx 72 ppi but 110 ppi. This makes everything more than 30% smaller and although the text and images are much more sharper than monitors with less ppi, when things become too small they are hard to see regardless how sharp they are. For example this is how this page looks on my monitor at default view and full screen of the browser - the grey on the right is the background.
Have in mind that on monitors with ppi less than 110 the image above will appear larger than on my monitor. The next image shows the rulers in Photoshop equal the size of real life rulers on my monitor while the inclosed image shows rulers that are equal to real size ruler on another guy's monitor with less ppi screen resolution.
I'm not that much of a web developer but sometimes I design web pages in Photoshop and prepare images. So, based on my experience I'm thinking that more and more people would use browsers with zoomed in view at which case images with less pixels per side than the pixels of the monitor displaying them will look bad and I wonder if this can be avoided if the images are with larger resolution than the default view. Of course I realize that then at default view the images will not look as crisp as they could.

  • How do I turn an image into a transparency?

    Hi,
    There's a question I've seen asked dozens or hundreds of times, and I thought I found an answer a few years ago. I've since forgotten how to do it:
    Turn an image into a transparency.
    Now, the obvious solution is to set the layer to "multiply." Yes, this is the effect I want. However, I want the layer to be transparent instead.
    Another solution is to draw an image on a transparent layer. This works great, but only applies if I create the image from scratch. I want to convert an existing image.
    Another solution is multiple steps:
    1) Copy image
    2) Click "edit in quick mask mode."
    3) Paste image
    4) Exit quick mask mode.
    5) Invert selection.
    6) Ctrl+backspace to fill selection with black, on a blank transparent layer.
    Result? The image is now transparent! However, this converts the image to greyscale! Great for linework and text, terrible for photos or art!
    In an older version of Photoshop 7, I believe I got the following to work:
    A) Follow the previous steps 1-6, creating a layer with transparency
    B) Copy the original picture to a layer above the transparency
    C) Group the layer with the transparency layer below. (Note, grouping doesn't work the same any more.)
    D) The top layer provides the colors, but the bottom layer provides the transparency.
    E) It is too light, so you take the top layer, and maximize "saturation" 100%.
    F) Merge the two layers. It retains the transparency of the bottom layer, with the hue of the top layer.
    This no longer works, because I don't know how grouping layers works anymore.
    So, I need white pixels to be transparent. Black pixels to have zero transparency. Red pixels to have zero transparency. Etc.
    Meanwhile, grey pixels are solid black, but partly transparent. Pink pixels are solid red, but partly transparent.
    All pixels are 100% saturated, and the "lightness" is determined by how transparent they are.
    So, an analogy would be printing a photo on a transparency. I need to convert an image to a transparency.
    If the image/layer were overlaid on white, it would look exactly like the original photo.
    Does anyone know how to accomplish this? Mathematically, it's easy. But I don't know about any filter, process, or method to make the conversion using CS5.
    Thanks,
    Ben

    Hello!
    I hope that I understand what you need.
    (One could just put the image on a layer, and lower its opacity, but you seem to be looking for an effect in wich the tranparency is not the same for all pixels.)
    Try this:
    1) Turn your image image as a layer (double-click it if it is a background layer) [In order to add a mask]
    2) Select all, Copy (CTRL+a, CTRL+C)
    3) add a layer mask (click the rectangle with a circle in the bottom of the layers panel) [to be able to change transparency]
    4) target the mask [so that you can past an image in it] ALT+click the mask, paste the image.
    5) Invert the colors of the mask (CTRL+I) [in order for the white to be transparent and the black opaque].
    You now have a layer whose transparency is based on the lightness of the pixels.
    Hope that's what you are after!

  • How to save transparent background images to have transparent background thumbnails with Photoshop 2014?

    In old versions of Photoshop there was a feature that made thumbnail images have a transparent background.  I'm a CC member using Photoshop 2014 on a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.9.4 and every thumbnail of a transparent background image I've created in Photoshop 2014 appears on my desktop with a solid white box background that has a thin black outlined box inside of it.  How do I save the transparent background images I've created in Photoshop 2014 so they will appear on my desktop as thumbnails with a transparent background?   I'd like to continue to be able to replace the default background-less folder icon that that appears on files with transparent background thumbnails to customize my files as I use to do with older versions of Photoshop.

    If your layered document has a Photoshop background layer it visibility need to be set off when saving a PNG or Gif file for Photoshop background layers do not support transparency.
    Thumbnail may be a bit more complicated than you think. I do not use Lightroom, and only occasionally use the bridge.  I believe Lightroom and Bridge  keep thumbnails they develop for image files  in their library databases and caches.  Other programs do not have acces to  these.  RAW Files and Image files have Jpeg previews stored in then.  I believe most application use these previews jpeg to create thumbnails.  Jpeg format does not support transparency.
    Icon on the desktop are not always thumbnails some are embedded icons in application modules other are icon in dll these may well have transparency. However image file on the desktop have generated thumbnails.  However you can create a shortcut for an image png file and create a icon with a transparent background for the png file and change the shortcut's icon for the png file to the transparent ico file you created for it.
    Also many Photoshop release ago an Adobe module created Thumbnails for image files in Windows File explorer and most likely system file dialog. Adobe stopped supporting that stating Microsoft changes how windows works.
    Today I use FastPictureViewer Codec Package to generate image thumbnails for image files including RAW and PSD files in File Explorer and system file dialogs.
    I don't use a Mac don't know what available for your Mac.

  • Save transparent background images to have transparent desk thumbnails with Photoshop 2014

    MacBook Pro 2.7GHz 10.9.5 16gB Photoshop 2014
    I need to create new desk images with a transparent background. Whenever I try I get a white background. How can I create a transparent background?
    Are there any other Adobe 2014 apps that will save transparent backgrounds?

    That is a normal response when saving jpg files. Confirm thet effect with Tif, Psd and Png and if you are coming up with a white background when saving a file with a transparent background it may be time to reset Preferences for a possible remedy.
    To reset Preferences:
    If Photoshop is already open on your screen, close it (Quit). Then hold down Shift+Ctrl+Alt (Win) / Shift+Command+Option (Mac) on your keyboard and start Photoshop.
    A dialog box will pop up asking if you want to delete the existing Preferences file (the "Settings"). Click Yes in the dialog box. The existing Preferences file will be scrapped and a new one will be created.

  • How to organize hundreds of images into a transparent grid

    How would you do this:
    Create a contact sheet sort of thing but with something like only 1 or 2 pixels between adjacent images (on all sides).
    And any space not taken by an image would be transparent.
    Images will be something like 100x84 px  (app) but should fit something like 24rows by 32  columns  (app) or there abouts.
    Spacing can be adjusted to stay in some 3:4 (NTSC) relationship
    No dimensions or column/row stipulations are exact and in fact are pretty loose.
    Final (approx) dimension can even be attained by Free_Transform  dragging to size.
    The main requirement is that the images are uniformly and closely (but not touching) spaced.
    ====================================================================
    I'm tinkering with the ouput module and getting pretty close, but don't see any options for a transparent background.  Unless there is something tricky that can be done using the `custom' button on the color picker.

    You could use this script to place all your documents, they will be placed next to each other without any spacing.

    Increase your canvas size to allow for the spaceing required
    See this thread for the re-space script.

  • Help! Image Capture scanning detected images solid black! Screen cap inside.

    I know this is not a forum for Image Capture, but there is no dedicated forum for it, and I figure there are smarter people here with regards to images.
    Image Capture is scanning ~some~ detected images solid black. It presents an overview scan just fine, but than the final files are black.
    Here is a screen capture:

    iPhoto earlier than iPhoto 9 (11) does not support Grayscale because it adds  a color profile name Dot Gain 20%.  This profile is not compatible with iPhoto.  You can either rescan those photos as color photos or change the profile to sRGB or RGB.
    I've created an Automator workflow application, Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB profile, that will convert B/W files to a jpg file with the sRGB profile.  However, is doing so it adds an additional jpeg compression level to the file resulting is a smaller file size but not a smaller image size. You can download it from Toad's Cellar.
    The conversion will have to be done on the photos outside of iPhoto before they are imported.  So you will have to export the original files to a folder on the Desktop, run the application on them and then reimport the new files.

  • How do you make an image have a transparent background?

    i brought an image from PS into Illustrator and i want to put it in AE and use the puppet tool. however, when i bring it in it has a white background, but i just what the object i am going to puppet, so how do i do that?

    AE does not require an image to be sent through Illy first. Just make sure your image has a transparent background and/or an alpha channel if need, then save as a psd file. In AE bring the psd file in as footage, unless you need a compostion and folder for the psd created in the project list. You should then be able to use the puppet tool on an image with a transparent background.

  • Buildinga new image bitmap with transparency:

    Hi all,
    I am wondering if there is a way to paste a transparent image (gif) into a constructed Image without losing its transparency.
    I came across it as I was trying to build a new Image by pasting a number of transparent images into a 'buffer' image. Up to now, the buffer worked fine, except that it lost all transparency.
    Consider the example below.
    class myclass extends Component{
    public myclass( int w, int h){
    Image originalgif= Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getImage("smiley.gif");
    // make sure the image is loaded
    try {
    MediaTracker tracker = new MediaTracker(parent);
    tracker.addImage(originalgif, 0);
    tracker.waitForID(0);
    } catch (InterruptedException iex) {
    iex.printStackTrace();
    // build a new image containing the transparent GIF
    Image rescaledgif=new BufferedImage(w,h,BufferedImage.TYPE_3BYTE_BGR);
    Graphics g=rescaledgif.getGraphics();
    g.drawImage(originalgif, w,h, this);
    public void Paint(Graphics g){
    g.drawImage(originalgif,0,0,this);
    // draws a transparent gif
    g.drawImage(rescaledgif,100,100,this);
    // draws the same gif rescaled no longer transparent but on a gray background
    Is there a way to have the rescaled image still having its transparency? may be using a different colordepth for the buffered image, may be by defining a transparent color in the DrawImage() functions?
    thanks in advance,
    'Niklas

    Hi Niklas,
    You're losting transparency here:
    g.drawImage(originalgif,0,0,w,h,this);
    To create rescaled copy use the Image's method getScaledInstance().
    It keeps transparency.
    Image rescaledgif =
    originalgif.getScaledInstance,w,h,Image.SCALE_DEFAULT);
    This is not the only way but seems the simplest.
    Regards,
    Igor.

  • How to create image slice with transparent background without white halo around?

    Hi, I want to make slice image with transparent background. I set the slice option background color to my background color. But when the image is on my html page set against the same background color, it has white halo around:
    How can I get rid of the white halo?
    I need the slice image to have transparent background and not have a color background because it's going on a rollover button with the background change. I don't want it to look like this on rollover:

    >it looks to me like you built it with that "halo" to start with.
    No, I didn't put in the halo myself. The shape is a character from the Webdings font. It's set to some darker fill color and set on a transparent background. Photoshop put the white halo there after "Save For Web".
    > Make your graphic on a transparent background and Save for Web
    I did exactly that, see:
    I set the slice background to my color. I try the Matte option and come out the same with white halo.
    It seems I'm not making Photoshop antialias to my background color, instead Photoshop just antialias to white.
    What else do I need to do?

  • Why won't PNG8 image use Alpha Transparency?

    In CS5, I'm trying to create a PNG8 image with Alph Transparency.  Every time I select  a color on the image, it changes from Alpha to Index tranparency.  Do I have to set a specific Palette, Dither, or Maximum number of colors?

    Yes set your canvas to transparent for sure - same as you would for PNG 32. Matte color should not have an impact.

  • Script to Sort Images with/without transparency?

    I've made this a new thread because I posted a similar question that was answered correctly in another thread about a sorting script for images with and without clipping paths.. I'm hoping the trend continues. (I could probably modify the script myself if I knew the proper syntax for image transparency.)
    So, my question simply is: Is there a script that will sort images (in my case psds) into two separate folders, one containing images with transparency, and one with images with no transparency (or, no layers).
    Any help with this, as always, would be very very much appreciated,
    Thanks!
    Andy

    Another reason to create this as a new thread of course is to help anyone else who may do a search on this particular scripting need .

  • Image Capture: can it detect separate images for film / transparency?

    is there anyway to detect separate images while scanning film? this check box dissappears when selecting the dropdown SCAN MODE into anything but FLATBED.
    would be very useful when scanning film strips. thanks,

    I noticed after upgrading to Snow Leopard that images imported with Image Capture have "No Access" for Everyone.  I used Image Capture a lot under Leopard and Everyone had "Read Only" or "Read & Write" permissions.  Before and after the upgrade, I stored the images folders I created (with Image Capture) in a Shared/Pictures folder.
    I couldn't find any answers on why the permissions are set this way by Image Capture with Snow Leopard.  I found this article http://www.ehow.com/how_2314896_fix-permissions-mac-os-x.html which at least helped me change the permissions of all images in a given folder.
    Seems one should not have to change the permissions after importing images....

  • Making a image have a transparent background

    I was given a image and asked to use it as a logo for a website. It is a black image with a white background. How do I get a transparent background so I can post the image on a web page and only see the image and not the white background it has? I am using photoshop elements 5.0. Thanks.

    For me, best solution for extracting an image from its background is using a terrific plug-in for Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. It's called GML Matting. It's free, functions flawlessly and you can create some amazing images with it. I save the extracted images with transparent backgrounds as PSDs.
    You can download it here: http://research.graphicon.ru/image-processing/gml-matting-6.html
    Select the latest version from the menu. After it's installed, you'll find it at the bottom of the Filters pull-down.
    I've used it with Elements 2, 5 and 7.
    How well does it work? You can decide. I took two photos, one of my Jeep parked in a parking lot, overlooking a quiet bay. Then I took another photo of the rough surf on the ocean side of the island. Using Elements 5 with the GML Matting plug-in, I extracted the Jeep and its shadow and dropped the image onto the photo of the surf. It took about 30 minutes to clean up edges (using various Elements tools). When completed, the resulting image is virtually impossible to detect as a composite.
    Here's the finished image: http://home.att.net/~historyworld/OceanBeachJeep.jpg
    You can see a review of the plug-in and see the images to create my composite by scrolling through the linked thread below (on the Photocamel forums). http://photocamel.com/forum/image-editing-color-management/48945-free-background-removal- software.html

  • Permanently removing part of an image from a transparent background png file

    Hello, I think I know the answer to this question, but I wanted to double check.  I am new to Photoshop and do not know all the functions.  I have a png transparent background file of a tree with a lot of branches.  I want to erase some of the branches so they are just permanently gone.  I would like to use this image on different backgrounds so I am looking to just erase the branches all together.  Is this possible?  If not in Photoshop, perhaps another adobe program?  Thank you!

    If you want to permanently delete the branches then you can just erase them using the eraser tool. I would always suggest keeping the original file just in case something goes wrong and you want to start again. So just open the .png, save a new version and start erasing the branches you want.

  • How do I create an image with a transparent shape?

    Hi
    This should be easy -
    The end result I want is this:
    a png which is mostly black (or any colour) but with a defined shape in it which is transparent.
    I have the shape. I select it. I seem to be able to make a mask from this (a selection which I can copy and move about). But what I can't figure out how
    is how to create a new image which is filled except for this masked area.
    Any help gratefully received.

    Open a blank, new file with foreground color green
    Type text
    Open effects palette, and in the drop-down go to bevels, then select "Simple Emboss" - it is the second one in my program. Apply
    Still in he effects palette, in the drop-down, go to visibility, select "Hide". Apply
    Double click the f icon on the text layer in the layers palette to bring up the Style settings dialog, and add a small stroke to better define the letters.
