Detecting the State of Caps Lock

I have a rather interesting problem - to which so far there seems to be a surprising lack of information.
I wish to determine the state of the CAPS LOCK key as well as the INSERT / OVERWRITE - and as I think these are pretty standard, there should be a platform independent way to test the state of these.
I can find no clues however - any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try using public boolean getLockingKeyState(int keyCode) which is in java.awt.Toolkit

    I don't understand?  Having caps lock on still allows you to type numbers.  Perhaps you mean something else?

    My iMac is only several weeks old and the light on caps lock stopped working any advice?

    Hi
    Does the Caps lock still work, just not the LED?
    Or does the caps lock not work at all? You usually have to hold the caps button for 1-2 seconds.
    If the key is indeed faulty, then you should contact Apple, or go to an Apple Retail Store, or Service Provider to have the keyboard replaced

  • Dot appears under the password when 'caps lock on' at the time of entering password in loginscreen

    As you can see in the above image, there is a small dot under the big(for password dot) dot.The small dot is appear when I hit the caps lock and it disappear when I again hit the caps lock. It is happening after installing the Mac OS X(10.10.1) or Yosemite.Before that it is does not happen before. The small dot appear randomly, I  mean to say it appear some time when I hit the caps lock (and disappear when I again hit caps lock) but it does not appear some times (although I hit caps lock one or more than one times).If some one noticed this problem.

    Hello ANTVD,
    It sounds like you are unable to connect to your cellular service even after restarting the device multiple times. I recommend the troubleshooting from the following article named:
    iPhone: Troubleshooting No Service
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4429
    Toggle airplane mode: Tap Settings > Enable Airplane Mode, wait five seconds, then turn off airplane mode.
    Remove the SIM card and verify that it's a valid, carrier-manufactured SIM. Also verify that it isn't damaged, worn, or modified. Then reinsert it.
    Check for a carrier-settings update. Connect to a Wi-Fi network. Then tap Settings > General > About. If an update is available, iOS will ask you if you want to install it. If Wi-Fi isn't available, connect your device to iTunes.
    Update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS.
    Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will reset all network settings, including Bluetooth pairing records, Wi-Fi passwords, VPN, and APN settings.
    Restore the iPhone.
    If you're outside the United States, please also follow these steps:
    Go to Settings > Carrier > Automatic.
    If the phone registers any carrier network, Settings > Carrier will be present.
    If the Carrier option is missing in Settings and you're outside of the Unites States, please contact Apple for support and service options.
    Set the option for Automatic to off.
    A list of potentially available carriers appears after about two minutes. If the device is locked to a carrier, it may connect only to the carrier network to which it is locked. If the device displays carrier networks, then the device is working as expected.
    Set Settings > Carrier > Automatic back to on.
    If you're still experiencing No Service issues, contact your carrier to check for any network or account issues that could cause these symptoms.
    Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Sterling

  • My mbp's keyboard is unresponsive. None of the buttons work except for the light for caps lock. The trackpad also doesnt click but i can move the cursor.

    My mbp keyboard is unresponsive. I cant type anything but the caps lock key light turns on. My trackpad cursor moves but does not click. Any fix?

    Try an SMC reset. The article covers when this is required, but doing this will not affect anything.

  • DV7 keeps blinks 4 times in Caps Lock, even after motherboard swap

    OK guys, I really need a good advice here, because I am going nuts on this case.
    I have a Pavilion DV7 in which the motherboard died (Caps Lock keeps blinking infinitely when power on). I then replaced the motherboard with a new one, but the new motherboard then blinks 4 times when powering on (after CPU cooler stops). According to HP that means "graphics failure". Then I got the new motherboard replaced (under warranty) with another new one. This second new motherboard also blinks 4 times when powering on. This can't be right, because what is the odds for receiving two motherboards with similar defects. None of the motherboards work with external monitor (VGA) neither.
    Now I wonder if a defective LCD or LCD inverter could cause this 4 times blink?
    /Ulrik

    Well the promise is that they will fix it for a year. HP did not make the hard drives so you cannot really blame them on that although the motherboard is their issue. I would say keep rolling with it until the warranty is out. If you have another issue ask to escalate to a supervisor, but HP hews pretty close to the terms of the warranty. A few states have non-auto lemon laws and you might do a bit of a google search to see just what your rights may be in the place you live.

  • [ZSH] Right click key turning text into caps lock

    Hi,
    In zsh, my right click key turns text in caps lock and I have to type Ctrl+C to get back to the command prompt.
    Is there a way to change this behaviour ?
    Thanks

    You can check the caps lock only if the swf has focus. When embedded in an HTML doc, the swf  does not receive focus by default.
    Create a new FLA and add a TextField labeled "status".
    Add this script to the first frame.
    var state:String="INACTIVE"
    addEventListener(Event.ACTIVATE, ah);
    addEventListener(Event.DEACTIVATE, dh);
    addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, efh);
    function checkCapsLock():void {
    status.text= state + "  " + "Keyboard: Caps Lock " +
      (Keyboard.capsLock ? "ON" : "OFF") + "!";
    function efh(event:Event)
    checkCapsLock();
    function ah(event:Event)
    state="ACTIVE";
    checkCapsLock();
    function dh(event:Event)
    state="INACTIVE";
    checkCapsLock();
    Run this in a browser and click inside and outside the swf area, while toggling the Caps Lock.

  • Num + caps lock on MBP 17"

    I reinitialized a MBP from the recovery DVD.
    At the very beginning of the process num + caps lock lighted up and remained so through the complete installation. I did not touch them before and during the installation
    After the installation war finishet, I found out the both functions would work in reverse mode, meaning:
    num is on = the keyboard works normally
    num is off = I can enter the numbers only
    caps lock is on = keyboard works the normal way
    caps loc is of = only uppercase characters show when typing
    Maybe this is an old question.
    The mbp had been initialized after purchase by its first owner (from which I purchased it) and it worked normally when I checked it before purchasing it.
    Any idea?

    Have you tried resetting your PRAM (KB) or the PMU (KB)?

  • ****PLEASE HELP ME SOMEONE**** PLEASE - Re: ON SCREEN CAPS LOCK INDICATOR

    can someone please help me before i pull all of my hair out.
    i have windows vista - 64 bit - the HP IQ500 touchsmart with a wireless keyboard.
    in the systray the num caps and scroll lock appears as little blue boxes (when on).
    everynow and again they simply disapper.
    i researced how to activate them again but cant remember how to do it.
    there is a way without having to mess with the registry and without downloading any program
    i just cant remember how. i know wherever it is...you ultimately get 3 boxes that you can check in order to turn the options back on.
    i am not talking about toggling, or sound, or mscofig and then boot.
    does anyone know the steps to turn the caps scroll and num lock indicator in teh sys tray back on
    oh, and right clicking on the toolbar and going to the notificiation area is not what i am referring to either.
    I checked in the control panel programs and the hp on screen caps lock indicator etc program is there.
    I reinstalled it nonetheless and confirmed it is installed properly
    When I right click on the notification area I do to properties/notification area/customize
    There are two lists there
    1. Current Items and
    2. Past Items
    For some reason I see caps lock - scroll lock and num lock under the past items
    There you are also able to change the status of the items to either Hide wne active, hide or show
    All three (caps/num/scroll) are SHOW
    I click apply OK then apply
    I restart the computer and nothing. The on screen caps lock indicator is still not in the notification area/systray area
    I repeat teh steps to ensure that the three have the SHOW option chosen and they are.
    So....
    Program is installed
    Items are check for SHOW
    Restart was done
    Ohhh and also...I went to MSCONFIG and made sure that the HP Keyboard Program was selected/check mark as one of the start up programs.
    There in a run command to activiate the 3rd party program (hp onscreen indicator program)
    When you enter the run command that I cant remember...you then get this option where there are three check boxes...one next to num lock - one next to caps lock and one for scroll lock.
    Once you check/select the boxes/options you want...presto they appear in the sys tray/notification area.
    I just cant remember the run command it to save my life.
    Please....put my mind to ease...cause I am losing it!
    I just cant seem to "walk away"...must be my OCD :-(
    Thanks

    NO.
    We are all iPhone users just like you.
    Apple has no blacklist.
    You can contact your carrier and see if they offer such a service.
    You cannot block it at all.

  • I can't get a caps lock indicator on my monitor using win8 with a wireless kb on my new p7-1410PC

    How do I get the "caps lock" to appear?

    Hello Yucky1,
    I understand wanting to get the on screen caps lock to display.
    You could either access the ease of access center, and enable toggle keys and that will make your PC beep when the button is pressed. Click on this link and it will show you a video on how to do that.
    You can also check keyboard settings to see if the options Is available.
    How to check keyboard setting steps below:
    1.       Place mouse all the way down in the bottom left corner of screen and then left click, a column with a list of options should appear.
    2.      Click on control panel
    3.       Up in the top right corner type keyboard in the search box.
    4.       Then click keyboard.
    5.        A box will appear with the keyboard settings, check and see if that option is available.
    Please respond at your earliest convenience if this helps out.
    Thanks.
    Clicking the White Kudos star on the left is a way to say Thanks!
    Clicking the 'Accept as Solution' button is a way to let others know which steps helped solve the problem!

  • Changing Caps Lock Behavior

    Is there a way to change the behavior of the Caps Lock key so that the combination of Caps Lock and the Shift key produces lower case? I've just migrated from the Windows world and a number of my passwords are "reversed case" (harder to steal) - on my MacBook Pro, those passwords are a hassle - If there was a workaround, I'd not need to change them all.

    I suspected that Apple would "fix" the traditional behavior of keyboards so that the caps lock key did exactly what it was supposed to do !

  • GNOME 3.14 Caps Lock

    Hi.
    After upgrade to 3.14 the system doesn't remember the changes of Caps Lock behaviour. The attempt to remap/turn off the key using both the basic and advanced GUI tools fails -- Caps Lock continue to bear the default behaviour.
    Do you observe the same issue? How can I remap/turn off Caps Lock?
    Thanks.

    I'm not running Gnome at the moment, but from what I remember you can disable gnome-settings-daemon's keyboard plugin so Gnome stops managing your keyboard's settings. Than you can use setxkbdmap command to set your desired options. Of course you have to put it in some script that gets executed when you start X, like .xinitrc or somewhere in ~/.config/autostart/.

  • OSX Caps Lock stuck on (not a sticky keyboard)

    You see this question posted frequently, and I have searched exhaustively to find the right solution for my problem, to no avail.
    Occasionally, my iMac will get into a funky mode where EVERTHING I TYPE IS IN CAPITAL LETTERS, regardless of the status of Caps Lock. Yes, I know, it's annoying. But it's more than just annoying because it makes it impossible to unlock the screen and I have to reboot, losing unsaved work in the process. ARGH!
    You're probably already thinking of all the silly solutions; removing cracker crumbs or grape jelly from under the keys, unplugging/replugging the USB keybard or trying a different keyboard. Let me save us both some time, because it's not that obvious. I ask you to put your thinking cap on, because right now my screen is locked and I would rather not have to reboot. My wife has some unsaved work that I don't want to lose! Do you accept the challenge? Thanks! Here's what we know, and some of the things we can rule out:
    * This has been known to happen while I am typing.
    * The only solution I have found to restore normal behavior is a simple reboot, which resolves the problem every time.
    * It is not a bad keyboard. The same behavior is exhibited by known good USB and Bluetooth OEM keyboards, as well as a third aftermarket keyboard.
    * The Caps Lock keys on ALL THREE keyboards are working properly, as demonstrated by the Caps Lock LED toggling on/off with each press of the key.
    * However, the Caps Lock indicator in the Password field STAYS ON and does NOT toggle when the key is pressed!
    * No key behavior has been changed from their default Preferences.
    * This was happening with the factory install of Lion, and has continued after the in-house upgrade to Mt Lion.
    * This occurs only once every two months or so, which is why I have never got around to opening a ticket with Apple.
    All of this leads me to believe that there is nothing wrong with my computer. I believe that, quite by accident, I fat-finger some magical key combination that triggers this behavior. Unfortunately, I can never figure out what I've done, or how to get it back to normal without rebooting the darn thing. Until I can figure out what triggers this behavior (and so presumably will be able to toggle back to normal when it occurs), I think my best workaround is to use a password that has all upper case letters so at least I can unlock it when it does happen. Unfortunately, right now I am still facing losing work due to a reboot if I can't find a real solution.
    Suggestions? Advice? SOLUTIONS????

    Hi Donna, if you've already rebooted, try this workaround...
    System Preferences>Keyboard>Modifier keys>Caps Lock=no action.

  • Control Key activates Caps Lock in wmii-3.5

    I have an odd situation occur only when using wmii-3.5.  Whenever I press the Control key, the Caps Lock Key is toggled.  I'm using the wmiirc file that ships with the wmii package and have not made any changes to it.  I don't have this problem in fluxbox or xfce.  I looked at the wmiirc and there doesn't seem to be any config there that would lead to this.  Any  ideas?
    Thanks!

    The wiki page for wmii says to put 'setxkbmap -option ctrl:swapcaps' in your .xinitrc which will swap the ctrl and caps lock keys. Remove that line and restart X.

  • Caps lock option

    What does the caps lock option do in settings>general>keyboard menu? I turned it on but didnt notice a difference

    This allows you to double tap the shift button (caps lock) and it will turn blue and lock caps. Without that turned on, you can only capitalize a single time. Make sense, I hope? I'm not sure if I explained it quite right.
    Hope this helps you.
