Determine if user is a windows system administrator

Yes, I understand the goal of Swing is WORA, but I have a very specific challenge...and if I can't meet it, this application will be written in .Net rather than Java.
The challenge: The application needs to know whether the current system user is a Windows system admin (i.e, assigned to the Administrators group) and, if not, hide certain functions. I have considered writing a file to a location and checking for an error, but that's not always reliable...depending on system policies. I am wide open for good ideas. :)
Thanks.

..The application needs to know whether the current system user is a Windows system admin (i.e, assigned to the Administrators group) and, if not, hide certain functions. >When constructing the GUI..
try {
  //  certain functions
} catch(Throwable t) {
  //  hide certain functions
...Or to put that another way, "The application needs to know whether the current run-time environment offers the functionality that relates to the app.". That is a different thing to knowing whether "the current system user is a Windows system admin".

I think I recall the post - I'll try to find it, if I can't find it I know Gary posted comments on the page so I'll try to summon him here too.

I came across a very helpful discussion posted by someone who was studying to become a server administrator and he asked about things to practice to be a good admin. There were lots of excellent comments, but I am having trouble finding this feed from like 3 months ago maybe. I want to know what types of tasks can I practice in my home lab to sharpen my skills; i.e. 'be able to write a script to add new users to AD'

I think you need to disable the root user assuming you have it enabled.

  • Why no system administrator?

Suddenly, after a restart, there seems to be no System Administrator on OSX Server (ML).  I cannot update software, or login to the server.  I changed the root user password, but when I open the system prefs to users/groups, I am unable to give sys admin status to any of the users listed.  I check the box, but it asks that I restart the computer before changes (and it unchecks the box).  When I restart, the change is not applied.  Any guidance from the community would be greatly appreciated.

Please take these steps to restore administrator privileges to your account. This somewhat tedious procedure is only necessary if you've confirmed that no adminstrator account exists on the system.
    Step 1
Boot into Recovery mode. The OS X Utilities screen will appear.
    Step 2
Take this step only if you use FileVault 2. Launch Disk Utility, then select the icon of the FileVault boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main screen.
    Step 3
    Select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. In the window that opens, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Select your boot volume if not already selected. Pull down the menu labeled Select the user account and select
    System Administrator (root)
Follow the prompts to set a password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
    Step 4
This step, like Step 2, applies only if you use FileVault. Log in as usual, then log out, but don't restart.
    Step 5
At the login screen, click Other... Enter "root" (without the quotes) in the Name field, and enter the password you set in Step 3 in the Password field. You should now be logged in. Do nothing while logged in as root except as indicated below.
Open the Users & Groups preference pane. Select your usual administrator account in the list of users and check the box marked
Allow user to administer this computer
You'll be prompted to restart. Do that and log in as usual.
    Step 6 (optional, but recommended)
Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading "Disable the root user."

I am trying to download iTunes on my new desktop computer (Windows 7, 64 bit).  It starts installing, and then stops with the message- "The System Administrator has set policies to prevent this installation." This is a stand alone computer and I am the sole user.   Please help.

This is a Microsoft Windows Issue.
    From a MS Support Engineer:
    "Hi,
    ·        Is the computer on a domain?
    ·        Is the issue isolated to only this software or you get the same error message with other software’s as well?
Try the steps below and check if it helps.
    Step 1:
Run the software setup file as an administrator and check if it helps.
    a. Right click on the setup file of the software that you are trying to install.
    b. Select “Run as administrator”.
    Step 2:
Temporarily disable the antivirus software running on the computer and check if you are able to install the software.
    Disable antivirus software
    Warning:
Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.
    Step 3:
    a. Click Start, type "Local Security Policy" (without quotes) and press enter.
    b. Click on Software Restriction Policies.
    c. In the right pane, double click on the "enforcement".
    d. Select “All users except local administrators”.
    e. Click Ok and restart the computer and check if the issue is fixed."

  • Allow a windows non-administrator user to run cmd.exe as administrator without sharing administrator password with the user

I have standalone Windows 2003 and 2008 Oracle database servers (they are not in a Windows domain environment ). The Oracle DBAs can perform all their routine activities from command line with administrator privileges. For this i've to either share administrator
user password with the Oracle DBAs or add their windows login user to Administrators group. If i can give the DBA user permission to run windows command prompt without sharing administrator password, i can give them non-administrator login access to Windows
2003/2008 server. Normally when a non administrator user would try to run a program as administrator on Windows 2008, the user is prompted to input administrator username/password. Is it possible to give non-admin user access to run a program/application (cmd.exe
in this case) on Windows 2003/2008 without sharing administrator credentials with them?

With the OTORISER application I developed, normal users can run applications with admin privilege …
Otoriser is totally free ! Applications, mmc consoles, control panel cpl files can be run under admin and system context with Otoriser. Let’s say you donot want your users to be admin in their machines, but want them to run some applications with admin rights.
If this is the case then you are on the right blog.
There are two components for Otoriser. Management and client components. There are no complex implementation and no frustrating steps to be performed. Within 10 minutes you can start testing the results
After you download the setup files, install client components in the client by running it directly (or any deployment method you have), it will take about 5 seconds to install it. Then, let’s say you want your user to change system properties of the machine.
With the tool provided in Admin package produce the hash of system.cpl file and enter that hash into the group policy (details are provided in documentation). When policies are applied for that user then he or she can run that control panel applet under admin
context but donot forget that the user is still an ordinary user.

  • Mac loses all users and System Administrator

i work in a professional recording studio and we have had this happen twice in the past week or so. the computer works fine and then we shut it down and restart and then the login screen appears. the computers are supposed to be set to automatically log in. then there is no way to log in. we dont have any passwords set for the computers so normally when we install software we type in the username and hit enter but this is not working for the login screen. we tried logging in as SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR for the username and password and that doesnt work. we start up from the install disc to change the password but there are no users. not even an admin.
they are powermac G5s. all software is up to date. these computers are never online and all software installed is completly legal. no cracks or viruses.
does anyone know what could have caused this? and how to prevent it?
also is there a mac software comparable to "goback" on the PC? It sets apart a % of the HD to track ALL movement on the HD and if something gets f-d up, you hit the spacebar during boot and pick the day or time when you knew the system worked fine and EVERYTHING goes back to the state it was at that moment (all files, options, settings, everything.) I've tried Carbon Copy Clone, but thats not the same, takes over an hour to 3 to do, plus that hasn't worked very well for me in the past; javalthread errors and \ditto: errors.
these computers have worked fine for the past 9 months now. so we dont know whats going on. any help would be greatly appreciated. sorry for the long post i am trying to be as specific as possible.

if it happend on one machine so far and appears to be related to the PT plugin being moved around, that could be it.
plugin could be associated with certain location within the disk or the OS when it installs originally, when moved around it could generate errors (not being a developer it's just a wild guess)
for ex. some applications check for certain peripherals
and hardware etc. in the background, or extensions may conflict with other sfotware.
if possible, you could try and replicate the same actions on "safe" machine - if it does the same thing, it's a plugin messing things up or conflicting with something.
it would be easy to use external drive with the same software, boot from external drive and replicate the steps.
it is also possible that the OS got corrupted somehow on the machine or the hard drive may have problems, and PT plugin has nothing to do with it and was just coincidental.

  • How to restrict users working on Windows 7 clients from accessing Windows Explorer and other systems in the network through Group Policy with a domain controller running on Windows Server 2008 r2

    Dear All,
We are having an infrastructure setup of around 500 client computers managed through group policy.
Recently the domain controllers have been migrated from Windows Server 2003 to Server 2008 R2.
Since this account requires extremely strict environment, we need to figure the solution for restricting the users from access anything locally.
It would be great if you can assist me with the following query.
How to restrict users logged on Windows 7 clients from accessing Windows Explorer and browsing other systems in the network through Group Policy with a domain controller running on Windows Server 2008 r2 ?
Can we disable Network Tab on the left hand pane ?

You cannot block explorer.exe when you do not replace the shell - the
desktop you see effectively IS explorer.exe...
Your requirement sounds like you need a custom shell:

  • Java daemon on boot: "This user is not allowed access to the window system right now."

The daemon is located in /Library/LaunchDaemons/ and launches successfully on most occasions. However, it sometimes fails to start with this error:
Nov 17 20:36:24 server.local java[28972]: This user is not allowed access to the window system right now.
Nov 17 20:36:24 server com.apple.launchd[1] (net.java.server): Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
I have the server command running as a background daemon using its "nogui" option (the developers claim to have written it to not display a gui). However, it seems that somewhere along the line, Java is trying to display something. As the daemon is running before users log in, it gives this error. Once a user is logged in to the system, it runs fine; however, logging in a user to run the server is not an option. It needs to run on boot.
Any ideas for how to solve this? I'm going to contact the developers to see if it may be something they can fix, but I want to be able to force the issue in case the problem ever occurs in the future.

Irrespective of any claims by the developer, this certainly appears to be a test case that shows that the tool is not working as expected, and that the application has a bug.  This test case would be better if there was some evidence around why only some of the startups fail, but in general this will involve what's been suggested earlier:  "Contact the application developer."
As some general background on what's involved, see daemons and agents and related; processes that are not allowed to connect to the GUI for reasons of security.
I'd also suggest testing your DNS, as seeing "server.local" can imply local DNS configuration errors.   Launch Terminal.app  from Applications > Utilities and issue the following harmless diagnostic command and see if it reports no changes, or if it detects network or DNS errors:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
If this is OS X Server and a NAT'd network, you do not want to reference any DNS servers located off of your NAT'd network.
Why DNS?  Because DNS errors can cause only some operations to fail, particularly if there's more than one DNS server selected (and where some subset of the DNS servers are malfunctioning or misconfigured).

  • IProcurement is not a valid responsibility for the current user. Please contact your System Administrator.

    Hi All,
    When I am trying to click on the 'iprocurement Home page' menu in the iprocurement responsibility getting the below error message in R12;
"iProcurement is not a valid responsibility for the current user. Please contact your System Administrator."
Can any one let me know how to resolve this?
    Regards

    Hi Joseph,
I am assuming that the user actually has the iProcurement responsibility assigned to them. If so, try the following solution from note 1560400.1:
    1) Logon with System Administrator responsibility
    2) Navigate to Profile > System, click on User and enter the user name
    3) Search for profile 'Applications Start Page'. Delete the value set at user level and save
    4) Retry
