Determine numeric and replace it

How to determine whether a string is numeric or not?
And what is the Replace function in Java?, i need to replace the character "Not Numeric" which "", thanks.

Hi.
I have written the following piece of code to determine whether the string contains numeric or only letters.
Save the following program into a file called testStringNumeric.java and execute. Type exit to quit.
For any suggestions please mail to [email protected]
Thanks and Regards
Soumya Mitra
import java.io.*;
public class testStringNumeric
public static boolean checkString(String var)
boolean status = true;
int i = 0;
while(i < var.length())
if (Character.isLetter(var.charAt(i)) == false)
status = false;
break;
i = i + 1;
return status;
public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception
BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in));
StringBuffer str = new StringBuffer();
String inStr;
String temp;
try
while ((inStr = in.readLine()) != null)
str.append(inStr);
temp = str.toString();
if (checkString(temp) == true)
System.out.println("String contains letters only");
else
System.out.println("String contains digits. Not contain only letters.");
System.out.flush();
if (temp.equalsIgnoreCase("exit"))
in.close();
break;
str.setLength(0);
} // end of while
catch(Exception excep)
excep.printStackTrace();

    Hi Jeff,
    Thanks so much for bringing this bug to our attention. I was able to reproduce this on my machine as well. I will make sure that a bug report is filed on this issue. I'm sure you've already discovered this, but in the mean time you can just do this search and replace with the block diagram in view. Thanks again.
    Regards,
    The better work around is to "code it once"   What are all those same numeric constants doing on all those block diagrams?  Let me know the CAR when you file it.

    hii
    i am using search and replace function to get output.my output is of form ' *X0123.3 ' .here i am replacing the term *X01 with space because i need only 23.3 as a result.but i am unable to get that out in the output indicator.i used lot of functions like string to number and so on but i am getting output as zero .can you please suggest me wt to do.i am attaching a copy of my file.

    Your problem is the fact that you are converting it to an integer, thus loosing the fractional part. You need to use "Fract/Exp String To Number" instead and create a DBL so yor data is 23.3 instead of 23.
    You also don't need to manipulate the string if the initial part is of constant lenght. Just use the offset input as in the figure below.

  • Numeric and Non Numeric Data

    Hi,
    I have to check the data in Varchar2 field idtr and if it is numeric some actions are to be done on the data and if it is numeric some other different action is to be done.
    So I used some logic for finding whether the data is numeric or non numeric which I got it from the net.
    Now my problem is all decimal numbers are to be treated as numeric but this logic is treating decimals as non numeric and I am not able to proceed further.
    Can some one help me out in this issue.
    Below is the Logic and actions I am doing
    select      pol_id,lpad(substr(trunc(to_number(idtr),0),1,10),10,0),idtr
    from           pl_insrd
    where      length(idtr) - length(translate(idtr,chr(1)||translate(idtr,CHR(1)||'1234567890',CHR(1) ),CHR(1) ) ) = 0
    and           length(idtr) > 9
    UNION
    select      pol_id,lpad(trunc(idtr,0),10,0),idtr

    I don't agree to_number() is [always] the best way ... the easiest way? ... maybe.
    My personal view is that there is no universal way to determine if a string, in all circumstances, can be translated into a number. One has to have knowledge of the source data domain ... only you know if, in your particular circumstance, '1e4' is or is not a NUMBER represented as a string.

  • I need to create a ghost image of my G4 iBook (OSX 10.3.9) and replace the OS9 on my G4 tower with the created iBook ghost image. How do you do this?

    I need to create a ghost image of my G4 iBook (OSX 10.3.9) and replace OS9 on a G4 tower with the Ghost image. How do you do this? Will my applications still work?
    The iBook is running Pather, i have tons of programs i use on it, project files, etc... and my G4 Mac tower is more powerful, faster, and more reliable than the iBook. I basiclly just want to take the entire OS, programs and files... create an image, and drop the image on the G4 Tower so it basically will function just like the iBook. Like a mirror image of everything that is on the iBook.  I know that you can create image files in the Disk Utility on Panther, but will that back up the entire OS with settings, programs, files and all?  ive never done anything like this before, so i wanted to post this up to see if i would get an answer. In the meantime, im reading "Mac OS X, Help Desk Essentials By Owen Linzmayer" to see if i can find the steps to do this.
    Any help would be greatly apprciated. Much thanks!

    Can't be done as an exact copy from one Mac to the other.  The operating systems are system specific. First make sure your system doesn't need a firmware update to get 10.2 or later on it. You'll need to install 9 on it if it does, direct from a 9 retail CD that is compatible with it *.  This disc can't say Upgrade, Dropin, or OEM. To determine compatibility, identify your G4 tower:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3082
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42739
    Then look at the OS 9 compatibility:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
    Then apply the correct update
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
    The last Mac OS 9 to come retail is 9.2.1, and that's newer than 9.0.4, 9.0.2, and 9.1.
    Your ghost image can be done using cloning software, but then you'll have to use a retail 10.3 installer and 10.3.9 combo update on the G4 tower.  Then use the Migration Assistant to import the data from the clone of the iBook. The 10.3 retail disc looks like * and does not say upgrade, dropin, or OEM.  The 10.3.9 combo update is here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxcombinedupdate1039.html
    The clone to an external hard drive can be done with these instructions*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html The import of the external hard drive with the migration assistant can be done with these instructions:

  • Find and Replace Japanese characters in pdf file on iPhone

    Hi eveybody !
    I want to find and replace Japanese characters in pdf on iPhone.
    I using zlib to deflate stream - endstream block and extract text.It's work fine with latin-text.
    But when i work with japanese characters , I don't know how to do it ?
    I decode a sample japanese pdf file, and I know that each Japanese characters are performances as hex string : "<01b7><0e230a23>..."
    But i don't know how to convert Japanese characters to the hex string like that.
    Can evrybody help me?
    Thanks!

    Searching is the same process as extracting - since it's about turning page content into something understandable.  So that still remains what you need to learn/understand - of course, referring back to all the previous sections about font formats, etc.
    Replacing in PDF is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT for two reasons - subset fonts and explicit glyph positioning.  Have you determine (conceptually, if nothing else) how you plan to addresses these two issues?
    PDF doesn't do UTF8 for page content - so don't worry about that.

  • Would like new window to open in new tab as to opening in an exsisting tab and replacing open window

    Would like new window to open in new tab as to opening in an exsisting tab and replacing open window

    Could you describe the problem or problems in more detail? For example:
    * Are you clicking a link in page open in Firefox, or following a link from a different application?
    * Do you want different things to happen between those two cases?
    Background: Pages have a range of ways to set up a link. These can include:
    (A) Same window or tab (default)
    ''To change how this is handled, you can manually Ctrl+click the link to open it in a new tab, or use an add-on like Tab Mix Plus to override the default.''
    (B) New blank window (target="_blank")
    ''On the Tabs panel of the Options dialog, the first checkbox determines whether you see a new window or a new tab in the current window.''
    (C) Named target (e.g., target="MyApp")
    ''On the Tabs panel of the Options dialog, the first checkbox determines whether you see a new window or a new tab in the current window.''
    HOWEVER, if the site already used this named target before and the window/tab is still open, Firefox will re-use that window/tab and replace the current page with the new page.
    ''To change how this is handled, you can manually Ctrl+click the link to open it in a new tab, or perhaps an an add-on can override the default.''
    (D) Scripted (pop-up) window
    ''This can be the same as any of the above, or the page can bypass the new window/new tab setting by specifying certain features of the new pop-up window. There is a hidden override if you are running into this problem (browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction).''

  • Regular Expressions find and replace

    Hi ,
    I have a question on using Regular Expressions in Java(java.util.regex).
    Problem Description:
    I have a string (say for example strHTML) which contains the whole HTML code of a webpage. I want to be able to search for all the image source tags and check whether they are absolute urls to the image source(for eg. <img src="www.google.com/images/logo.gif" >) or relative(for eg. <img src="../images/logo.gif" >).
    If they are realtive urls to the image path, then I wish to replace them with their absolute urls throughout the webpage(in this case inside string strHTML).
    I have to do it inside a servlet and hence have to use java.
    I tried . This is the code. It doesn't match and replace and goes inside an infinite loop i.e probably the pattern matches everything.
    //Change all images to actual http addresses FOR example change src="../images/logo.gif" to src="http://www.google.com/../images/logo.gif"
              String ddurl="http://www.google.com/";
    String strHTML=" < img src=\"../images/logo.gif\" alt=\"Google logo\">";
    Pattern p = Pattern.compile ("(?i)src[\\s]*=[\\s]*[\"\']([./]*.*)[\"\']");
    Matcher m = p.matcher (strHTML);
    while(m.find())
    m.replaceAll(ddurl+m.group(1));
    what is wrong in this?
    Thanks,
    Rajiv

    Right, here's the full monte (whatever that means):import java.util.regex.*;
    public class Test1
      public static void main(String[] args)
        String domain = "http://www.google.com/";
        String strHTML =
          " < img src=\"images/logo.gif\" alt=\"Google logo\">\n" +
          " <img alt=\"Google logo\" src=images/logo.gif >\n" +
          " <IMG SRC=\"/images/logo.gif\" alt=\"Google logo\">\n" +
          " <img alt=\"Google logo\" src=../images/logo.gif>\n" +
          " <img src=http://www.yahoo.com/images/logo.gif alt=\"Yahoo logo\">";
        String regex =
          "(<\\s*img.+?src\\s*=\\s*)   # Capture preliminaries in $1.  \n" +
          "(?:                         # First look for URL in quotes. \n" +
          "   ([\"\'])                 #   Capture open quote in $2.   \n" +
          "   (?!http:)                #   If it isn't absolute...     \n" +
          "   /?(.+?)                  #    ...capture URL in $3       \n" +
          "   \\2                      #   Match the closing quote     \n" +
          " |                          # Look for non-quoted URL.      \n" +
          "   (?!http:)                #   If it isn't absolute...     \n" +
          "   /?([^\\s>]+)             #    ...capture URL in $4       \n" +
        Pattern p = Pattern.compile(regex, Pattern.CASE_INSENSITIVE | Pattern.COMMENTS);
        Matcher m = p.matcher(strHTML);
        StringBuffer sbuf = new StringBuffer();
        while (m.find())
          String relURL = m.group(3) != null ? m.group(3) : m.group(4);
          m.appendReplacement(sbuf, "$1\"" + domain + relURL + "\"");
        m.appendTail(sbuf);
        System.out.println(sbuf.toString());
    }First off, observe that I'm using free-spacing (or "COMMENTS") mode to make the regex easier to read--all the whitespace and comments will be ignored by the Pattern compiler. I also used the CASE_INSENSITIVE flag instead of an embedded (?i), just to remove some clutter. By the way, your second (?i) was redundant; the first one would remain in effect until "turned off" with a (?-i). Another way to localize a flag's effect by using it within a non-capturing group, e.g., (?i:img).
    As jaylogan said, the best way to filter out absolute URL's is by using a negative lookahead, and that's what I've done here. The problem of optional quotes I addressed by trying to match first with quotes, then without. The all-in-one approach might work with URL's, since they can't (AFAIK) contain whitespace anyway, but the alternation method can be used to match any attribute/value pair. It's also, I feel, easier to understand and maintain. Unfortunately, it also means that you can't use replaceAll(), since you have to determine which alternative matched before doing the replacement, but the long version is still pretty simple (especially when you can just copy it from the javadoc for the appendReplacement() method, as I did).

  • Find and replace several array elements

    I have a 2d array and want to subsitute any negitive value with a marker e.g "**" or any indicator which would be identified easily. I am using Labview 5.1

    Hi,
    The data type of you array is probably numerical. If you haven't already
    done this, the first step would be to convert the data to a character
    data type. This is easy done with 'Number to Decimal String'. Tie the
    output to a 'For Loop' and the search and modify each element in the
    array using a combination of 'Search 1D Array', 'Replace Array Subset',
    and shift registers.
    The first iteration of the 'For Loop' will give you the first index of
    the first '-1' found. Use that index value to replace the the '-1' with
    your '**'. Increment the index and pass it to the shift register to use
    as a starting point for the next interation's search and replace process.
    There may be a more "packaged" way of doing this but I just love For
    Loops.
    Hope this helps ...

  • Search and Replace using wild characters

    I have a bit of a problem on my hands while dealing jdom and xml. I am parseing an xml response from a service. The issue is that it contains an element with a colon. Nothing I can do about the service so I have to deal with it. I know I could use DOM and s on but I have chose to use jdom for a couple of reasons. What I am planning on doing is removing the colon in the element names with some sort of search and replace. The problem is that the there could be up to 500 element names with a numeric value. The element name looks like the following ns1:Point, ns2:Point, ns3:Point, and so on. JDom will not handle this so I would like it the element name to look ns1Point, ns2Point, etc. I have the xml returned from the service in a string. Is there any way I can do a search and replace given the above information. Thanks in advance

    Silverfoot wrote:
    I realize that it seperates the name space. The namespace for the element is different than ns1. Maybe I am missing something though
    Using JDOM, I navigate my way through the xml using getChild(elementname, namespace). When i get to ns1:Point, i use the same namespace as previous elements. Are you suggesting that ns1 is another namespace. In that case I would use a second name space to the Point element.I think you're missing a whole lot, actually. You don't seem to know much about namespaces. For a start you're apparently making the beginner error of assuming that the namespace prefix declares the namespace. And this idea:
    What I am planning on doing is removing the colon in the element names with some sort of search and replace.is just wrong. I would suggest you go off and find a tutorial (or a chapter in your XML book) about namespaces.

  • Find and replace smart quotes with straight quotes?

    I understand I can turn off smart quotes so that I can type straight quotes, but I need to replace hundreds of curly smart quotes with straight quotes, is there a feature that will let me do this? I am using FM8.
    Thanx,
    Willian

    I am using FM9....so I don't know if the same shortcuts apply, but this is what I found out last week.
    Use the Find and Replace tool:
    With smart quotes turned off and the Num Lock key turned on:
    Alt0147 will give you beginning quotation marks
    Alt0148 will give you ending quotation marks
    In the Find box use ALT0147 or ALT0148 for the beginning or ending quotes. When you click in the box and type
    one of the shortcuts the correct quote will be shown in the box.
    In the replace box type the regular straight quotes on your keyboard.
    I was thrilled that it would work!...course you do have to do them separately and be careful not to replace the curly quotes
    that you want to leave in your document.
    Hope this helps using FM8....

  • How do I find and replace text in PHP files?

    How can I in CS3 make sitewide changes to the text in PHP pages without changing variable names etc that have the same name?
    For example if I have an installation of a PHP forum and I want to change every instance of the word 'forum' to 'message board'...
    If I used the 'inside tag' search with " as the tag, then if "" contained a variable called 'forum' it would also be changed and therefore corrupt the code....
    Is there a simple way around this?
    Thanks!
    I'm using CS3 on Windows Vista.

    It looks like you're trying to find and replace source code, so you may be able to look at the various places that are looked at when finding and uncheck the ones that don't apply.
    But, if it's all source code then that won't help.  One thing that may work is to expand the search option - for example if the work "forum" that you're wanting to change it preceded by another word, or character or something that sets it apart, then do you find on that. You can expand that search phrase as far out in either direction that you need to to make it different, if of course that is practical in your situation.
    The only other way I can think of is to somehow create an exception rule, but I'm not sure if that's possible or how to do it.
