/dev/shm not mounted /dev busy

Recently I was trying out a boot disk I had made, and basically, I switched it off several times due to it booting the completely wrong kernel.
Now, I'm getting to the stage "Checking File systems" and then comes up [Failed]. I then get a message saying Reboot required, and that it will reboot in 15 seconds, just a few seconds before it reboots I get "/dev/shm not mounted, /dev busy" or something similar.
I've booted up my sysresccd, ran "fsck.ext4 -fcv /dev/sda2" to force a check and scan for any bad blocks, it came up clean, then I rebooted and got the same error, so I copied the kernel and system.map over to /boot to make sure there's no corruption and reinstalled initscripts and util-linux-ng, rebooted, same error.
Tried different kernels, I've checked fstab and menu.lst, no problems there, so I still don't get why I still get the same problem.
Anybody know of any fix other than reinstalling arch?
EDIT: Editing /etc/rc.sysinit and commenting out the fsck part made it work, finding out why fsck failed now.

On a system without LVM, a filesystem is created inside a partition. fdisk is used to list partitions on disks. Because the filesystems are inside the partitions, you can use the name of parition to mount it.
On a system with LVM, a filesystem is created inside a logical volume, not in a partition. The partitions (fdisk -l) are used as physical volumes (pvdisplay), which are added to a volume group (vgdisplay), in which a logical volume can be created (lvdisplay). In the logical volume a filesystem is created. Because of this, only the logical volumes can be used to mount the filesystem.
LVM adds an abstraction layer between filesystems and partitions. This is extremely handy because it's easy to add a disk (which is made physical volume) to a volume group which makes space available, which can be added to any logical volume in the volume group. When that's done, the filesystem in the logical volume can be enlarged with resize2fs, even online. Without LVM, it's not possible or very hard at best to do that.

  • Auto Partion fails error = /dev/sda is mounted

I booted from the cd,  ran /arch/setup then began going through the setup program
at the point it is going to auto partition my harddrive it fails with /dev/sda is mounted or busy.
I checked /mnt and its not showing anything mounted.
    32M for boot
    512M for swap
    7500 for / and home

Correct me if I'm wrong...I'm stuck at work on a *cough* winbloze machine.
    rw=read/write
    auto=mount when it boots up
    user=users can mount/unmount
sync=write data to the drive immediatly when saved.  async writes the data whenever it gets good and ready.
0 0 means the drive will never be force checked.
Or at least one of the 0's does.  can't remember for the life of me what the other means.

  • Upgrade to Yosemite, iPhoto won't open and NTFS-3G could not mount error with new external HD

    Help!
I just did a software update to get OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 on my MacBook Pro.
Now iPhoto won't open and I get this error:
"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable....Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup."
So I do this and try to repair the database as suggested and I get another error:
"iPhoto will open as soon as the iPhoto library is available. Time Machine might be backing it up."
But it's not - no external hard drive is connected.
I'm terrified I can't get access to my photos (and I admit I haven't backed up with Time Machine for over a year - my mistake that I won't make again).
So I bought a brand new external hard drive (seagate for mac and pc, 2TB) so I could save only my photos to the hard drive (because I googled and read you can manually save your photos to disk by dragging and dropping the photo library onto the external hard drive).
But I can't even get the hard drive to work....I get this error
    "NTFS-3G could not mount /dev/disk2s1
at /Volumes/Seagate Backup Plus Drive because the following problem occurred:
/Library/Filesystems/fusefs.fs/Support/fusefs.kext failed to load - (libkern/kext) link error; check the system/kernel logs for errors or try kextutil(8).
the MacFUSE file system is not available (71)"
I google the issue again and it says to uninstall NTFS-3G but I actually think I just deleted it a long ago without uninstalling it properly??  I don't know....
    (a)  how do i fix iphoto
    (b)  how do i get external hard drives to work with this OS (I've read lots of posts and don't really understand the advice)
    (c)  how do i get all my photos onto the hard drive safely so I can import them onto a PC
Any assistance would be magic for this little lady!

    (c)  how do i get all my photos onto the hard drive safely so I can import them onto a PC
First see if you can reformat the EHD to MS-DOS FAT with Disk Utility.  If you can
open iPhoto and select all of the Events in the Events mode. Use the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option and export to the EHD with these settings:
Select the destination for the export to be the EHD or a folder on the EHD.  This process will create a folder for each Event in your library with the same name as the Event and contain the original image files.  The EHD will be useable by a PC and the photos will be available also.

  • External hard not mounting

Upgraded to Lion last night on a macbook pro. Now my external hard drives will not mount. Get the following error message. Is there a fix. Cant reformat because they are 2tb disks mainly full of data.
    NTFS-3G could not mount /dev/disk2s1
at /Volumes/PenfoldPC because the following problem occurred:
/Library/Filesystems/fusefs.fs/Support/fusefs.kext failed to load - (libkern/kext) link error; check the system/kernel logs for errors or try kextutil(8).
the MacFUSE file system is not available (71)
    They worked perfectly in Leopard

Your external drives must use NTFS, and you were using MacFuse to write to them, which does not support OS 10.7.x yet, i suspect this might be because it's a 32-bit kext and lion defaults to 64-bit kernel mode? don't quote me on that. But if true you might be able to use MacFuse if you force lion to boot into 32-bit kernel mode.
However it might be better to uninstall MacFuse which hasn't had a release in a long time, and use OSX Fuse instead, which is supposed to support Lion:
    https://github.com/downloads/osxfuse/osxfuse/OSXFUSE.pkg
You need to uninstall MacFuse first, If you have the latest version installed then there is an uninstall button in the macfuse pref-pane (look in your system preferences), if not then you run the uninstall script manually by pasting this into your terminal (it will ask for admin password):
    sudo /Library/Filesystems/fusefs.fs/Support/uninstall-macfuse-core.sh

  • [SOLVED] mount: /dev/sda3 is already mounted or /mnt busy

Hello all, I've spent several hours researching this to no avail.  I'm trying to mount my partitions, first with my root partition (/dev/sda3) mounted at /mnt.  It seems no matter what partition I try to mount it gives me the same error: mount: /dev/sda3 is already mounted or /mnt busy.  I've tried the fuser command and killed all process associated with this device but new processes seem to pop up making it busy once more.
Hopefully somebody has some knowledge of what could be causing this one.
Thanks, and I hope to resurrect an Arch workstation once more!

You should not keep those files for long, and probably shouldn't back them up (if you need them at all -- since you do regular backups, I'm doubtful just how worthwhile that feature is).
"Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume".
One of Apple's maddeningly incomplete messages. Most likely, there's a problem with a file (quite possibly the one CCC didn't like).  See #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for details and instructions on finding and fixing it.
If you continue running the Directory Protection app, be sure to exclude your Time Machine drive from it (as it will just take up lots of room, and won't help repair your backups if there's a problem);  and exclude the folders it creates from being backed-up by Time Machine (as they'll create large backups, and you probably can't use the backed-up folders anyway), per #10 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

  • My USB-Stick is marked busy even though not mounted (?)

Also Subject lines are too short.
Hello there, my name is Ayutac, I use Arch for some while now and I probably screwed up.
tl;dr: My USB-Stick is marked busy even though not mounted (?)
Previous History: I was trying to get the newest Arch iso on a stick of my friend, so I got the iso here and moved the stick's content to my extern hard drive. I used the opportunity to experiment how good "mv -t target_dir *" would work and interrupted it because I was stupid. Two folders somehow weren't movable through mv anymore, so I mv'ed everything else – now explicit – and moved the content of the two folders via pcmanfm. After that there were about 16kB on the stick left.
Next I copied the iso using
    dd bs=4M if=/path/to/archlinux.iso of=/dev/sdc && sync
as suggested by the wiki. I looked at the stick; to my surprise the two folders I left there where still there, though filled with gibberish data. I thought I might give it a try, shut down, booted from stick. Black screen with a blinking text cursor for minutes. I concluded it didn't work and tried some other way. Following the wiki I was given the task to format the usb stick anew.
Thinking I knew what I was doing I used fdisk several times (including rebooting), getting myself two partitions with FAT32 (or so I think). But that somehow screwed it up.
The problem: After partioning and rebooting it seems I can't mount the partitions to copy the content of the iso. lsblk says
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
    sda 8:0 0 931.5G 0 disk

(sdc is the stick) but I get
    > sudo mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/usb
mount: /dev/sdc1 is already mounted or /mnt/usb busy
    > sudo umount /mnt/usb
    umount: /mnt/usb: not mounted
Furthermore "lsof | grep sdc" returns nothing, neither does "cat /proc/mounts | grep sdc" or "cat /etc/mtab | grep sdc". The only clue is
    > systemctl -a | grep sdc
    dev-sdc.device loaded active plugged 1000 ARCH_201409

I tried to shut the devices down, but that didn't seem to work.
Furthermore the pcmanfm shows two mount points of the iso/stick but returns error message when clicking on them:
    Error mounting /dev/sdc1 at /run/media/nait/ARCH_201409: Command-line `mount -t "iso9660" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid=100,iocharset=utf8,mode=0400,dmode=0500" "/dev/sdc1" "/run/media/nait/ARCH_201409"' exited with non-zero exit status 32: mount: /dev/sdc1 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: /dev/sdc1 is already mounted or /run/media/nait/ARCH_201409 busy
    Goal:
    1. Make the stick usable again, with 2 partitions.
    2. Copy the iso on the first partition.
    3. Have a functioning Arch booting stick.

    Welcome to Arch Linux.
A few questions and comments.  First, are the files you copied from the disk safe?  Since the plan was to wipe the disk anyway, I would suggest next time copying rather than moving files.  I always get itchy when I move files.  I have made some stupid mistakes where I copied hundreds of files to one output file, each one overwriting the previous.  Of course, as it was a move, the source file was gone as well.  Fortunately, I maintain backups.   I would also suggest you look into the rsync facility when doing bulk copies.
That said, another excellent way to destroy data is the dd command (There are those who claim dd means just that)  Are you certain that the usb disk had been been placed at the /dev/sda node?  In the thread title, you made the assertion that the drive was not mounted.  dd will run just fine even if the disk is mounted (I do not recommend this).  What were you using to look at those folders that had become full of gibberish?  Command line tools?  A graphical file manager? (Nautilus, Thunar, Dolphin, SpaceFM)  It is possible that the tool you were using was unaware that the contents had changed and was using cached information.
As to your goals.  First, copying the iso to /dev/sdc tells the system to use the entire device for the iso, not the first partition.  Our iso is not designed to be placed in a partition, I don't think you will meet with success trying to block copy the iso to a partition.  If you want to try it, the destination would be /dev/sda1 (for partition 1)  Make sure the partition is large enough.  I would suggest that you use the entire disk by dd'ing the iso to the /dev/sdc (assuming it is c) node, but make certain that all of the partitions are dismounted.  I know you think you did that, but I have my doubts.   Please use command line tools.  I don't trust GUIs that try to help too much.
If you want multiple partitions, use fdisk and re-partition the device.  Then create a file system in each of those partitions.
It has been a while since I have tried to master a USB that will boot.   I may have a faulty memory, or I may be using really old, outdated, information, but...  I think that a USB has to boot as if it were a CD drive .  I am not certain that a hard drive type structure with multiple partitions and a MBR will work on a USB drive (edit)and have it be bootable.  In other words, goal 1 and goal 2 might not be achievable if goal 3 means that the disk will boot.   I could  be wrong.

  • After boot can't mount SDS file systems on 3300 mount: cannot mount /dev/md

    Hi
I have a SUNW,Netra-440 with two SE 3300 SCSI each with two controllers. The server was working fine but after a boot, it can not see the metadevices stored in the 3300.
I have tried restarting the SE3300 and a boot -r from ok prompt but I still can see those disks or partitions.

i can see the devices in /dev/md/appvol but i can't mount them.
Any ideas what this could be? using metaset shows nothing, metastat -s dbvol hangs.
Am I missing some patch or am I missing something here? is the SE3300 damaged? or is it a problem with SDS (solstice). I have solaris 9.
The system was working fine until we had to boot and power off to perform power tests in the rack.

    Hi,
    thanks for your answer.
Yes format displays the physical devices, but metadb -i only shows the internal disks of the netra 440, not the ones in the 3320. metadb -s dbvol -i doesnt show anything.
metaset which is supposed to show me the metadevices, says the program is not registered.
cat /etc/lvm/md.tab has the configuration but since the scsi can be seen, the devices aren't mounted.
    Any suggestions?
    Cheers
    Oscar

  • Windows 2008 R2: SLES 11 Sp3 Guest converted from Vmware OVA to VHD, does not boot on Hyper-V: could not find /dev/sda4

    Hi
I have a VMWare OVA file with Guest OS as SLES 11 Sp3. I have converted this file from OVA to VHD using Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter Solution accelerator. On first boot of this VHD on Windows Server 2008 R2 - Microsoft Hyper-V I get an error that
"Waiting for device /dev/sda4 to appear..
    Cannot find /dev/sda4"
I have not even booted this VM once on Hyper-V, and hence not installed any Linux integration Services yet.
What could be the possible reason for this failure? Any suggested solution?
    Thanks

Easiest way (and also applies to Hyper-V 2012 R2):
Ok, following properly (originally missed the step to mount the root directory of the converted VM as "/mnt" )
    http://nwrickert2.wordpress.com/2011/10/24/rescuing-susie/
    Then once chrooted
    mkinitrd -d /dev/sda2
generated initrd from kdump WITH Hyper-V drivers & VM is usable!
    http://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/476780-boot-failure-mkinitrd-does-not-understand-that-dev-sda-has-become-dev-sde
Can't believe that it was so painful to find the right info easily
Just to finish it off, after converted machine boots fine, there is a small
matter of removing tools & fixing networking as per links below:
    https://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-51/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.vsphere.upgrade.doc%2FGUID-6F7BE33A-3B8A-4C57-9C35-656CE05BE22D.html

    All done!!!
Also (unsupported), but works fine is SLES 11 SP1
